Q
I heard that bridal shops only carry one size of each dress. What is the fitting process like, then?
If the bride is smaller than the sample size, we use strong clamps and sometimes pins to tighten the dress on her body. This gives the bride an idea of what the dress looks like in her own size. When the sample dress is too small, we hold it closed in the back, allowing the bride to get an idea of what the dress looks like. An alternative is to have the bride try on a dress that is similarly shaped, in her size, and do a comparison that way. We also look at pictures of real brides to get a

sense of what the dress will look like. We recently had a pregnant bride bring a girlfriend, who is her body double, to try on various dresses for her! Remember, a particular manufacturer's size numbers don't matter— the fit and proportion of the dress are most important!

Do I HAVE to wear white?
NO! I find that girls that think they need to wear white are thinking more traditional. There are many shades of white if you choose to stay in that particular palette, but colour is really in. You are going to be seeing a lot of shades of lavender, peony, and moscato.

I want my bridesmaids to go for the mismatched look, but I still want them to look cohesive. Do you have any tips?
A few suggestions I would have would be to keep some form of unity with the dresses. That means either choose one colour and different styles, the same style and different shades of one colour, the same style and similar tones of colours (ie: cream, dusty rose, champagne, mocha), or even to be very unique and opt for mixing and matching fabrics (ie. antique lace, crepe, tulle, rosettes). If you do all different styles, another nice option would be to have 1 common accessory amongst the bridesmaids. An easy way to achieve this

is to choose the same belt for all your girls—that way, in pictures, they won't be mistaken for a guest.

I don't like the idea of diamonds, both for budgetary and ethical reasons. What's a good alternative that looks similar?
Sapphires for engagement rings are popular with a surprising number of brides to be, both in their blue and white colours. Blue sapphires are usually less expensive than diamonds but can still be pricey for some. White sapphires are much less and have become quite popular with a good number of clients. They are favoured because of the cost factor, as well as the fact that they are a genuine gemstone and next to diamonds, are the hardest gem available, so they are very durable. In addition, a

BUDGET PLANNING: HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON YOUR RING
When it comes to rings, where do you spend? Where do you save? It’s Love has you covered! Text by Maria Kenney
Sticker Shock We asked a local custom jewellery design company about engagement ring prices and were surprised by the answer. “The average engagement ring ranges in price from about $7,000 to $10,000. Granted, there are exceptions to the rule in both directions,” says Mona of Mokada Custom Jewelry Design Studio. A little online detective work amassed some incredibly differing results: $2,000 to $5,000, 3 months salary, $5,200, etc. We say, take into consideration your total financial situation and your future financial situation. If one of you is heavily in debt or worried about being laid off, your circumstances might necessitate scaling back a bit.
Do Your Research Most likely you are a non-diamond expert, and since the rock is the one thing that drives up your ring cost the most, you’ll want to do a bit of research to know what it is that you’re getting. Educating yourself on the four Cs will allow you to inquire about each of them and calculate the true value of the stone. If you’re looking to drive down your costs, straying from the classic round, “brilliant-cut” diamond shape will save you a few bucks (oval, marquis, and pear cut diamonds are significantly less expensive).

Buck Tradition Who says you need diamonds, anyway? Though 90% of engagement rings these days have a diamond as the centrepiece stone, the sale of sapphires has been on the rise ever since Kate Middleton said yes to an enormous sapphire halo engagement ring. Sapphires, like diamonds, rely on the four Cs for quality, but your budget will take you a lot further in terms of size and sparkle than a diamond. If you want a stone that looks like a diamond, you might opt for moissanite, a clear, lab grown stone with no inclusions that boasts 10% more brilliance than a diamond at a third of the price.
Custom Creations If you (or your girlfriend) know exactly what you want but aren’t sure where to buy it, you might be headed down the custom route. Most people insist that custom always means more money, but (like anything) it really depends on what you want. Sutton Smithworks breaks down their pricing: “The design fee starts at $100, but the final cost of a custom ring would depend on what the client wanted for diamonds and whether they wanted gold or platinum. If the design is simple and has minimal stone setting it would be less than an intricate design that had many stones to set.”
Women's Bands Just when you’ve gone and spent your life savings on an engagement ring, you realize this is only the first of two rings. Gulp. Have no fear! As a general rule, a woman’s wedding band should be no more than 40% of the price of the engagement ring, with the majority being significantly less than even that (especially if you spent a lot). Remember too that the wedding band is supposed to be a compliment to the engagement ring, not a competitor, so you’ll want to keep it to scale. If your engagement ring is a simple solitaire, the wedding band should be fairly plain. If your engagement ring looks like a disco ball with a pavé band and a halo, your wedding band might be pavé as well.
Men's Bands The man’s band is typically the least expensive of the three rings, but not always, and it really depends on the materials. Especially when purchasing a man’s ring, you’re likely running into uncharted territory, since most men never wear a ring until they day they’re married, so dealing with an expert is key. That expert will take into consideration the man’s general size and stature, current relationship to jewellery, and profession—a man who works with his hands will need a hardy ring, whereas a man who works in an office with a view will need something that goes with a suit. Epsilon Creations gave us a realistic idea of price: “Men’s bands typically run at $200 for the contemporary metal tungsten, which is the most popular. Catherine noticed Jason long before he noticed her. He was her oldest brother’s best friend, and she always had a big crush on him. In junior high, she even let her friends know that she would marry Jason one day. It wasn’t until Catherine entered university that she caught his eye and the two began dating. When they became friends, Jennifer developed a huge crush on him, and after a night of stargazing in the back of his truck, they began dating (a mere 10 years after they’d first met). The night Mitch proposed was right before Christmas. He left a gift in her room, telling her she wasn’t allowed to open it until after the date. She spent the whole date in suspense, and when Mitch dropped her off she ran back to the room to open the gift. She unwrapped a deck of cards which read “52 Reasons I Want to Marry You!” and knew instantly she was being proposed to. She read through them as fast as possible, tears in her eyes, before getting to the last one: “I’m probably getting really cold waiting for you outside, so come quickly!” She ran outside and found him on one knee.

Reggie is a lot of things, and he is everything to Pam, but there is one thing he is not: romantic. The pair met on the nursing staff at a hospital, and after passing each other patient reports while covering each other’s shifts, they decided to get to know each other better outside of their workplace. When dating turned more serious, Reggie did all the right things: found out what kind of ring Pam liked, hunted down a perfect match, and bought it. He picked her up from a gruelling 12 hour shift and, when she sat down in the passenger’s seat, handed her the box. Pam, not knowing what to expect, opened the box, and asked, “Are you proposing to me?” Reggie replied, “I love you and I’m not a romantic person, so yes, will you be my wife?”
