Student Recreation Center STARTING FRESH FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS…!

The new lodge at Indian Creek

As we begin a new year, Recreational Services will open its new Lodge at the Indian Creek Recreation Area, located 16 miles from campus and easily accessible by MARTA. On-line reservations will begin on January 6, 2014, with meetings and events beginning January 13, 2014. The first LEED-certified building at Georgia State University, the 4,700 sq. ft. lodge will house a large meeting room, two breakout rooms, an open lobby reception area with fireplace, a catering kitchen, and front and rear outside decks with seating. The new lodge will be the place to schedule your next meeting or event. The facility will be wireless and have full audio-visual presentation capabilities.

In addition, check out the new Ropes Course for students, faculty, staff and outside groups for challenging, fun-filled teambuilding activities. The Ropes Course sits among towering trees and consists of (4) two-level towers with heights ranging from 25’ to nearly 40’ high, complete with (3) zip lines topping out at 50’ above the ground. How do I get into the SRC? Students, bring your PantherCard to the Service Counter and sign an online waiver. It’s that easy. Faculty and Staff, bring your Panther card to the Service Counter. Choose a form of membership payment* and sign a waiver.

What are the age requirements for use of the SRC?

Master Card, Visa, Discover, Panthercash, cash and check

All children must be under the direct supervision of their parent/guardian. • Children ages 7 years and younger are only allowed access to the leisure pool. • Children ages 8-15 are allowed access to all areas except the Exercise Room and Free Weight area. • Children ages 16-18 are allowed access to all areas. • Children may only register for programs that are specifically noted as being for children.

How do I get a locker?

Are there clothing restrictions in the SRC?

A limited number of lockers will be available starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014. Go to the Equipment Issue Desk on the lower level.

For the court areas and studios, shoes must be an athletic shoe that does not mark the floors. Shirts are required in the court areas. For the exercise room and free weight area, shoes must be an athletic enclosed shoe that does not slide on the floor and the foot is secure inside the shoe. Shirts must have a sleeve and pants/shorts may not have a zipper. In the pool, spa and sauna only swim attire. Street clothes are not allowed.

What type of payments are accepted?

When can I renew my locker for Summer semester? Renew locker rentals April 14-May 6. If you do not renew your locker, you must clean it out by May 6! All items not retrieved 14 days after May 6 will be donated to charity.

Can I bring a guest to the Student Recreation Center? Yes! You may bring up to three guests per visit. Each guest will be charged $5, required to sign a waiver and must present photo identification. All guests must be accompanied by the member throughout the visit.

About the Program Whether you want to learn how to swim, get some exercise or just have fun, you will find something that meets your needs. All of the swim instructors and lifeguards are certified through the American Red Cross. On the first day of swimming lessons the swim instructor will assess each student to make sure they are in the appropriate class.

How to Register Register for these classes at the Service Counter in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center! Guests and nonmembers are not allowed to register for swimming lessons. Only children of current Georgia State University students and members of the Student Recreation Center are allowed to register for swimming lessons. You must have your PantherCard to register. You may sign up for Session 2 if you don’t sign up for Session 1.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES CHILDREN’S LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMS Only children of current Georgia State University students and members of the Student Recreation Center are allowed to register for swimming lessons. Direct adult supervision is required in the Aquatic Center while children are in the pool or in swimming lessons. Parents or adult supervisor may not leave pool area.You must adhere to pool policies in the Policy and Procedure Guidelines (www.gsu.edu/recreation). Failure to comply with policies may result in loss of privileges and financial reimbursement.

Intermediate Swimming Adults with no fear of water who possess beginner swimming skills must be able kick and breathe using a kickboard for 25 yards without stopping. Students will learn front crawl, back crawl and develop comfort in deep water.

Advanced Swimming Participants must be able to swim front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke for 50 yards without stopping. Adults will learn breaststroke, flip turns, diving, butterfly, and develop endurance and proficiency.

Aquatics CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CHILDREN’S CLASSES Parent & Child For ages 6-36 months; parent must participate in the water with the infant. This class teaches underwater acclimation while parents learn how to give their child a positive experience in the water.

Preschool I 3 to 5 year olds who are new to the water will develop comfort in the water, learn water entry, bubble blowing, floating, kicking, underwater exploration and general water safety skills.

Preschool II Prerequisite: Able to demonstrate completion requirements of Preschool 1. 3 to 5 year olds who are very comfortable in the water will learn new skills such as combined arm and leg action on front, treading with support and general water safety skills.

Learn to Swim Levels 1-3 These classes are for children 5-15 years old and taught in the leisure pool. Children are taught to swim and improve their level of skill.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills Objectives: Unsupported float, gliding, kicking on front and back without support, combined arm action with kick on front and back, treading water without support, personal safety and rescue skills.

Level 3 – Stroke Development Prerequisite: Must be comfortable in lap pool. Objectives: Front crawl with breathing to the side, coordinated back crawl, elementary backstroke, scissor and dolphin kick, treading water skills, diving from the side of the pool, and personal safety and rescue skills.

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills Must be age 5 the first day of the program in order to participate and comfortable away from parent. Objectives: Supported floating on front and back, gliding, kicking, and alternating arm and leg action.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Instructor

Includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid and lifeguard training techniques. No absences allowed. During the first class, you must be able to swim 300 yards continuously in the following manner: 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breast stroke, 100 yards of either front crawl or breast stroke. For breast stroke, you must demonstrate the pull, breathe, kick, and glide sequence. You must also demonstrate: 20 yard front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 pound brick; swim 20 yards with brick returning to starting point in a specified time. Books are included. Bring: swim suit, towel, lock, dinner/lunch, pencil and notebook.

Students will receive certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Instruction. You will become certified to teach Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Shallow Water Attendant, Basic Water Rescue, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and more. No absences allowed. You must be able to demonstrate all skills required for lifeguarding on the first night of class. Books are included. Bring swim suit, towel, lock, dinner/ lunch, pencil and notebook each day.

NAUI SCUBA Diver Prerequisites include a 50 foot underwater swim, a 9 minute nonstop swim of 300 yards, a survival float for 10 minutes and a snorkel 440 yards without stopping (conducted the first night of class). A minimum of 7 of the 8 classes must be attended and the first and last classes are mandatory. Open water training dives on the Marathon Florida Keys trip are required for certification. NO REFERRALS WILL BE ISSUED TO NON MEMBERS. The cost for the Marathon, Florida Keys open water training dives is additional.

About the Program Instructional Clinics are non-credit classes offered each semester. These progressive classes include instruction in dance, martial arts, sport, yoga and mind/body practices. Registration for Instructional Clinics is required, and all participants must be registered in their respective clinic by the first official class.

How to Register Only current members 17 years and older may register and participate in these clinics. Register for these clinics at the Service Counter in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center only during registration period!

About the Program Our outdoor recreation program offers a wide variety of experiences designed for all skill levels lead by a team of experienced volunteer trip leaders. In most cases, we provide equipment, transportation, leadership and handle all logistical planning. Unless stated, absolutely no prior experience is required. These programs are open to Georgia State students, faculty and staff and graduates who are members of the SRC. Students are given first priority on all trips. Guests are welcomed on a space-available basis. Minimum age to participate is 16 unless otherwise specified. A moderate level of fitness will allow for a more enjoyable experience.

Registration Register in the Touch the Earth Outdoor Equipment Rental Center. The entrance is on the Lower Leveloutside entrance behind the SRC.Trips fill early. Register no later than the Tuesday before the trip. Liability waiver will be signed at the time of registration or on the day of the trip.

Kayak Roll Clinics & Refresher Get ready for a great whitewater season! Beginners can come and see what it’s like to paddle a kayak and meet the Whitewater Club. Previous graduates of the WW Kayak School can work with Carson and instructors in preparation for the spring refresher trips (April 19 & 20). Experienced kayakers are allowed to come in and work on their roll and request any instruction. Dress for the pool. Experienced Climbing Clinics Those who are experienced, confident and Belay Certified will enjoy taking a Sport Lead Climbing Certification Clinic with us to be Lead Certified to climb on our wall or go outdoors on your own. Climber must be able to comfortably climb a 5.7-5.8 rated climb. In the Advanced Outdoor Climbing Instruction, our trainer will take the experienced, non-green Lead Certified, indoor climber who is ready to start climbing outdoors without relying on others. Course will consist of a short lecture followed by hands-on instruction on anchor building, how to clean a route and safety concerns. Raven Cliff Falls Tucked in the forest near the Alpine Village of Helen, we’ll hike the rugged Raven Cliff trail in this designated wilderness area. The trip highlight will be the pumping falls and creek from the spring rains. Alabama’s Pinhoti Trail Backpack the scenic Pinhoti Trail in Alabama! The hike starts in Cheaha State Park before going into the Talladega National Forest. The hike will be a seven mile chance to see what the 325 mile Pinhoti trail is like. This trail connects with the Benton McKaye and Appalachian trails. Backpack the popular Coosa Backcountry Trail across Coosa Bald and Slaughter Mountain. This moderate to strenuous journey in Vogel State Park is one of our favorites. It’s a spectacular trail that is usually only frequented by overnight backpackers, and thus, you get more privacy. Between the rewards of the mountain top views you’ll work to climb into Wolfpen Gap and out towards Slaughter Gap. This is not one to miss!

Team up with Touch the Earth and American Rivers on this service project event. The weekend will include clearing rivers of unnatural debris and trash, exploring the local area, and learning about how to keep our environment clean. Cost covers basic expenses and lunch.

Touch the Earth Raft Guide School You can be a river guide! We raft three great rivers that all require varying levels of guiding skill. These exciting rivers are a favorite destination on the Touch the Earth calendar and trained raft guides are always needed through the summer and fall. On this intensive two-day course we will run the rivers, learning guiding skills necessary for the job, reviewing on-river procedures and policies, and practicing rescue/safety skills. Parking for Equipment Loading and Unloading Customers may park temporarily for free behind the Student Recreation Center in the space marked “Touch the Earth.” To gain access from parking gate attendant, introduce yourself to the attendant as a Touch the Earth customer. You will be admitted to park in the provided spaces and given a voucher that must be validated by TTE personnel in order to exit.

Rental Policies 1. Rental equipment is available for checkout to current GSU students, faculty and staff. GSU graduates must be members of the Student Recreation Center to enjoy this service! You must present your Panther ID card. 2. A $20 deposit must be left for any reservation. Full payment for equipment must be made when the equipment is picked up. 3. Deposit will be forfeited if reservation is not cancelled by 5 p.m. on scheduled day of pickup. 4. Advance reservations must be made IN PERSON. 5. A Friday-Monday rental is assessed a two-day charge. 6. A $1 per item per day late fee is charged in addition to the daily rental fee. Exception: Bikes are charged $20 per day. 7. Additional charges will apply for any equipment returned wet and/or dirty (i.e. tents and stoves). 8. What is the Challenge Program?

Certification Challenge Experienced climbers may take the written and practical tests without going through the clinic. Pass all skills to be certified for one year. Challenges are by appointment only. One-time cost: $2/$4/$6

Certification Renewal

Renew your certification by demonstrating practical skills to the on-duty climbing wall supervisor. Sign the Climbing Wall Agreement, then you are set for another year. No cost.

Kids Climb

Children ages 8-18 may use the Climbing Wall when supervised and belayed by a certified parent, guardian or climbing wall staff.

Lead Climbing

Experienced climbers may lead climb routes during normal hours.You must follow the designated lead route. Ask about a Lead Climbing Certification Clinic to certify or challenge out. You must be belay certified for at least six months or prove significant experience. See climbing wall supervisor for details.

Bouldering Cave

The cave has both vertical and horizontal overhanging terrain. Any skill level may use it in a “no ropes” bouldering format. It is located on the adjacent to the Climbing Wall in the racquetball court hallway. Check in with the Climbing Wall attendant.

How do I schedule? ■ Complete online reservations at recreation.gsu.edu/cp ■ Reserve date at least one month in advance ■ Make payment at least one month in advance to avoid cancellation ■ Confirm all details no later than two weeks in advance A minimum of a 10 person charge is required but larger or smaller groups are easily accommodated. Sessions may range from two hours to half day to a full day.

The Program offers people innovative ways to improve their abilities to work with others. Focus is on on creative problem solving and effective communication. The experience will increase trust and enhance group cohesion. Programs are tailored to meet the needs of the group. Our facilitators have experience with clubs, office units, social organizations and corporate groups.

Our new lodge and outdoor ropes course is located at the Indian Creek Recreation Area off South Indian Creek Drive in Stone Mountain. Sessions can also be held on the GSU campus.

INDIAN CREEK LODGE The new 4,700 square foot lodge is the perfect place for off campus events. Individual rooms or the entire lodge may be reserved by chartered student organizations, faculty/staff departments for University approved meetings and for personal/social events by Recreation members. The lodge has a large meeting room, two breakout rooms, an open lobby reception area with fireplace, a catering kitchen, and front and rear decks with seating. If you would like to host your event outside, we will also have available for reservation a three-quarter acre event lawn. Visit our website to review policies and submit a reservation.
