EAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS D

The long wait is at an end at last! We are going to spend the week at the Dreams Onyx Resort Punta Cana, basking in the rays and relaxing on the resort. Having you there on our special day in the Dominican Republic means the world to us, and we count ourselves very lucky. Thank you so much for making such a long trip to be a part of our wedding. We know this has been a sacrifice for many of you, and we are eternally grateful for your commitment to witness the culmination of our love.

In reality, marriage marks the start of a life that will unfold in ways much more beautiful than any of us could have ever dreamed possible. When we look back on our lives and our love many years from now, it won't be the flowers, the music, or the food that we remember most fondly; rather, it will be the time we spent with our friends and family as we began our married lives together. We appreciate you being a part of one of the best days of our lives and hope you have a good time at our wedding.

We anticipate a fantastic weekend and wish the same for you.

With Love and Appreciation,

Tony & Sybil

Sybil and Tony had been friends and partners together for five years, and they had shared many wonderful moments together. But, the best moments in their relationship have always been the surprises. The first big surprise was a car, then a fur coat, then she gave him a Ducati motorcycle! He wrote her a song, put it to music, and had it performed!

But, when Tony proposed to Sybil. It was a magical day. Tony had asked for Sybil’s hand in marriage not only from her father, but he knew her best girlfriends all had to authorize this union as well. He gained permission from them all!

Then Tony invited all of Sybil’s friends to the Capital City Club got down on one knee and asked her to marry him! Sybil was so surprised that she couldn't even speak at first, but when she finally found her voice, she said yes. Once she said yes he showered her with a mountain of additional surprise gifts which included her beloved puppy, Gatsby Monroe!

Sybil surprised Tony when she said they were going to get married in the Dominican Republic. They had always talked about having wedding, but they never thought it would actually happen.

JUMPING THE BROOM

Jumping the broom was first seen by many people in the 21st century through the 1977 miniseries Roots in a wedding scene when the characters Kunta Kinte and Bell jumped over a broomstick in front of their plantation community The tradition of jumping the broom at weddings has a long history that encompasses different cultures and continents

But it has “always been a practice, from its inception, used by people who are ostracized and oppressed by the broader nation, state or kingdom,” said Tyler D. Parry, an assistant professor of African American and African diaspora studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Because enslaved Africans generally had no legal right to marry before the Civil War, they saw jumping the broom as a symbolic way to recognize their unions.

In time, Dr. Parry said, that population “innovated, reinvented and reimagined jumping the broom in a way that was fulfilling to them.” The practice has since come to signify sweeping away the old and welcoming the new, the joining of two families and showing respect to ancestors.

“The legacy of African Americans choosing commitment in a time when they were seen by America as threefifths of a human being is why it was important for us,” said Ms. CudjoeWilkes, a founder and pastor at the Double Love Experience, a Baptist church in Brooklyn.

The premise here is that two is better than one, and a strand of three is not easily broken.”Orsella Hughes, Officiant at Serenity Ceremonies. The tradition most likely traveled to America with slave traders. Some slave owners forced slaves to jump the broom to signify their union. Others coordinated elaborate weddings to prove their benevolence to slaves and abolitionists. Around the middle of the 19th century, African Americans identified with the ritual as their own.

“The broom is a tool of resistance and joy,” she added. “The broom handle represents the strength of the family, the bristles represent family members, and the decorative ribbon is the threestrand cord that God speaks to.

After the Civil War, former slaves could register their marital status with the government. Many slaves who married before 1865 believed that jumping the broom was sufficient. As a result, some of them refused to officialize their marriage with neither clergy nor county members. Consequently, jumping the broom became a symbol of ancestral acknowledgment and honor. Today, the tradition is alive and well in Black weddings.

Dr. Sydel LeGrande, born in Tampa Florida in 1957, grew up there through the tumultuous 1960’s. Becoming a doctor was neither encouraged nor expected for a young Black girl, but her mother reminded her that all things were possible. She supported and encouraged a bold 4 year old who proclaimed she was a doctor. Sixteen years later, that impossible dream became a reality. Building on the belief that education was the key to her success, Dr. LeGrande began taking college courses in the 9th grade. Upon graduation, she was the first student ever to receive both a high school diploma and AA degree at the same time, enrolling at the University of South Florida as a 16 year old premed junior. In 1978, she began her medical education at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, and completed her Family Practice residency in Family practice at the Medical College of Georgia in August GA. In 1985, she worked in an urban community clinic in Liberty City in Miami, FL to fulfill her NHCS obligation. There she learned to treat the whole person ( wholistic medical care) before terms like “Holistic” and “integrative” medicine were coined. For over 35 years, her mantra has been to treat the whole person: spirit, soul and body. In the late 1980’s, she partnered with her husband, a personal trainer and competitive body builder, to open Precision Health Medical and Fitness Center in Miami, FL and Keys to Health in the Florida Keys, FL. In 1993, they opened Your Place Medical and Fitness Center, after recovering from Hurricane Andrew destruction. In 2009, they returned to Tampa and opened Compassion Care for Pain and Injury. Following her husband’s death in 2012, Dr LeGrande started Your Place Health Systems, LLC and today operates Altogether Lovely Mind and Body Restorative Center Lake Nona taking personal care and medically supervised fitness to a new level, with plans to expand.
