Department of Music Performance Class MUS 151, 152, 251, 252, 351, 352, 356, 451, 452, 456 Course Syllabus FALL 2014 Instructor of Record: Dr. Karen Salvador (810) 762-0950 Office Hours: Tuesdays 9:30-10:30 and Fridays 9:45-10:45 or by appointment. Course Purpose and Procedure The purpose of the Performance Class includes the following: To give music students the opportunity to learn about performing for others; To study and to apply the various performance practices both specific to the instrument or voice, and to performing music in general; And, to practice general musicianship through the practical application of performance and listening experiences both in and outside the Performance Class setting. The course consists of master classes and recitals that are meant to go ‘hand-in-hand’ with the student’s applied music class experiences and instruction. The master classes will focus on the student’s work in progress. Students will receive positive feedback, constructive criticism, and recommendations for improvement. The recitals will focus on the practical application of skills and techniques learned in the applied music lessons. The “final exam” will be the student’s end of the semester jury performance, and will be considered the culmination of work accomplished in private lessons, individual practice, and Performance Class. Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes As a result of experiences related to this course, the student will be able to and/or make progress toward the following Learning Outcomes: No. 1 Reflect on one’s own learning processes. No. 4 Demonstrate the ability to think creatively. No. 10 Use multiple perspectives and methodologies to analyze real or hypothetical problems. Common Body of Knowledge and Skills (NASM Recommendations) Experience a broad range of repertory through attendance at events such as recitals, concerts, opera and musical theatre productions, and other types of performances. Synthesis—Be able to work on musical problems by combining, as appropriate to the issue, their capabilities in performance. Demonstrate achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the major area, including significant technical mastery, capability to produce work and solve professional problems independently, and a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals that are evident of their work. Course Requirements 1. Students are expected to attend each performance class (one point is deducted from the final jury score for each absence from Performance Class); 2. Students will give a specific number of performances (or more) that corresponds to the student’s particular applied music level;

3. Students are required to attend at least four concerts outside the regular performance class times during the semester including two professional programs and two student concerts at the university level. One point is deducted from the final jury score for each concert not attended.
For additional information on these requirements, please consult the pages of the Student Handbook related to Performance Class and Applied Music. All music major and music minor students are required to familiarize themselves with the information concerning applied music classes, juries, recitals, performance class, and grading included in the Student Handbook. The Student Handbook is available on the department website (http://www.umflint.edu/music) under ‘Resources for Faculty and Students’. Class Format All applied music students must confer with their respective applied music instructors in choosing a date to perform in performance class and should sign up on the performance class calendar early in the semester to reserve a place on the recital schedule. In order to perform in Performance class (regardless of the format of the class), students must sign up in the Performance Class Notebook located in the Music Office. Additions to the allotted performance slots cannot be made without the instructor of record’s approval. Performance Class Recitals—Students must submit all recital information to the instructor on the Monday prior to the recital date by 5 PM (the Blue program information sheet can be obtained in the Music Office). Late submissions of recital information could result in the student not being permitted to perform at the requested date. Students who have signed up to perform in a performance class recital, but failed to submit their recital information prior to the recital, will not be allowed to perform at that recital. Students are responsible for all information in the printed program! • Students enrolled in 151 and 152 must perform at least once per semester. • Students enrolled in 251 and 252 must perform at least twice per semester. • Students enrolled in 351, 352, 451, and 452 must perform at least thee times per semester. Vocalists at the 400 levels are required to sing at least 2 pieces for each performance. Instrumentalists at the 450 level must perform at least one movement from a sonata/concerto, or a piece of similar difficulty. It is possible, in rare instances, for suitable duets and chamber works to be “counted” as solo performances, if each participant’s preparation is similar to what is required for solo performance (determination will be made by the Performance Class instructor, in consultation with the applied music instructor). Master Class Performances—Students who wish to perform for Master Class will be asked to seek approval from their respective Applied Teacher using the new Maize sheet. The same policies will apply regarding submission, late submission, and program information. Vocalists performing two selections are asked to provide two forms. If a student fails to perform the required number of times for the semester, five (5) points for each performance not given will be deducted from the student’s applied music grade (this is equal to onehalf of the letter grade). Failure to perform in performance class at the 400 level will result in a failing grade for that semester. Students may repeat a selection previously performed on a master class for a recital. Students may not repeat a selection previously performed on a recital for another recital.
Course Syllabus Performance Class
It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for an accompanist for all recitals and juries. A list of accompanists is on file in the Music Office. Financial remuneration for accompanists is the individual responsibility of the performer. The department very much appreciates keyboard majors who serve as accompanists. Students should engage an accompanist well in advance of the performance date so that an appropriate rehearsal schedule may be set with ample time for preparation. Choose your accompanist carefully. Grading The grade for Performance class is incorporated into the student’s Applied Music grade. There is no separate grade for Performance class. It is crucial for students to clearly understand, follow, and fulfill the requirements for Performance Class (class attendance, number of class performances, and concert attendance) as they are important components considered when calculating and determining the student’s applied music grade for the semester. Detailed information about grade computation is found in the Student Handbook. Concert Attendance Music students are connoisseurs of music. Applied music students are required to attend at least four concerts (two professional and two student concerts at the university level) during each semester. Middle school, high school and church choir performances are not acceptable. Students are to sign the programs of the concerts attended and submit them to the Music Secretary. The secretary will stamp the date submitted on each program. Questions regarding the acceptability of a particular concert not on the approved list must be brought to the performance class instructor before attending the concert. One point will be deducted for each concert not attended. It is possible to lose a total of 4 points. This requirement applies to all students who are registered for Applied Music, including Independent Study Applied Music. Programs must be submitted before the last day of classes of each semester. Junior and Senior Recitals Applied music students who are due to perform a recital, must submit three possible dates for the junior and/or senior recitals and finalize the recital date within 10 days of the semester during which the recital is to be given. Students must arrange their recital jury of two fulltime faculty members and the student applied instructor. Applied music students who perform a junior and/or senior recital are required to give a pre-recital performance three weeks prior to the scheduled recital date.
