O
ver the last months, Greek tourism faced the worst crisis in its history. The losses in revenue and jobs are of great importance, considering that tourism accounts for more than 25% of GDP. In 2020, besides the difficulties, we managed to save 20% of the arrivals of 2019, which was a record year for Greek tourism. In 2021, the Greek
government implemented, early on, a very broad and well-designed plan for tourism and, thus, Greece was the first country to announce the opening for tourism. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
was the one who proposed the timely adoption of a Green Certificate that facilitated travel between EU countries. Tourism businesses and employees successfully implemented the health protocols keeping our visitors safe. With everyone’s support, our country achieved the goals set for 2021 and laid a solid foundation for next year. However, there are still important challenges ahead of us. We want the final recovery of Greek tourism to be accompanied by changes to certain structural elements; further emphasis on the sustainability and authenticity of our tourism product, the maintenance of a sense of security and the digitalisation constitute main goals for the day after the pandemic. Greece starred during the two years of the health crisis, enhancing its brand. Hence, we will continue with high levels of energy and efficiency over the next period so that the sector fully recovers, and Greece acquires the position it deserves in the international tourism markets.

Following the impressive performance of the four years 2016 - 2019, where the islands of our Region broke one record after another, maintaining a permanent position at the top of the podium as a national champion in tourism and a pillar of the Greek economy, in 2020 they achieved a real feat: to attract tourism in the midst of a pandemic, in conditions global tourism had never seen before. The experience and reliability in managing this extremely difficult situation, turned into a vote of confidence in our islands from dozens of countries in 2021, which was reflected in the arrivals of over 3 million visitors in more than 20,000 international flights at the five international airports in our Region: Rhodes, Kos, Santorini, Mykonos, and Karpathos. Almost all the smaller islands of the South Aegean managed to even surpass the landmark year 2019, with 2021 now being a reference year! The above- mentioned data, which reflect the strong influence of the South Aegean on the entire tourist product in our country, are the greatest reward of the strategic choice of our Region to work with dedication on tourism, on terms that suit a champion. We are not going to remain passive before the developments. We play a leading role in the development of local tourism strategy, which in fact is a national tourism strategy if one takes into consideration the fact that the South Aegean, with the most important „brand names“ of destinations internationally, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Kos, holds 40% of the share of the Greek tourism market. We only see new challenges in the new conditions, no matter how difficult they may be. We respond to the modern needs of our visitors and the new trends that the pandemic is shaping in global tourism. The tourism feat of 2020 and 2021, proved it. Greece, the South Aegean won the most difficult match they ever gave! We continue trying, we continue planning in „alarm“ conditions and this raises the standards of safety, quality, and organization. ear visitor, The Peloponnese undoubtedly is one of the most beautiful areas in Greece. Its interesting geomorphology, the evergreen nature, the ideal climate and its deeply- rooted historical past make it a real earthly paradise. It is by no accident

It is also worth mentioning that during the first month there were 790.000 views of the video spot on the social media and more than 1 million on YouTube. he pandemic caused the greatest shock ever suffered by international tourism throughout its modern history. All of a sudden, we found ourselves in uncharted waters without a compass. People want to share their lives with other people. They want to travel, create memories, share holiday dreams, seek freedom in nature. So tourism has been promoted to a deep human need and this drew the attention of different countries, their governments and organizations, thus considerably contributing so that we can gradually get over this shock, mitigate fear and panic, and start reclaiming those moments which make our lives worth it.
The Greek summer of 2021 just proved that. Greece, as soon as restart towards tourist normality restarted, became a leader in the international market and managed to have a tourist season which outdid even the most optimistic forecasts.
The British market positively contributed to this performance, confirming even amidst the most adverse conditions, its leading role in Greek tourism. Admittedly, nothing just happens nor does success work on autopilot. There is this tradition of a longstanding relationship of trust.
