MASTER IN URBANISM The MSc in Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft was an eye-opening and enriching experience that allowed me to be part of a multidisciplinary and international academic environment. By developing projects in Europe, Africa and South America I have reached a better level of understanding of the opportunities and challenges that cities worldwide are facing and could face in the near future. Principally, I have understood the transformation potentialities that design-driven solutions could have, revalidating the role that our profession has as an instrument able to drive innovative and sustainable integrated solutions in social, economic and environmental terms.

Memory Wall and Community Incubator Proposals | Bogotá Images from Author

Bogotá | The Movement in Movement is a strategic urban regeneration proposal for Bogotá’s City Center. It intends to become the foundation of a larger plan promoted by the potentialities of a better integration between mobility systems, identity values and urban networks. Contributing, in the short term, with the meaningful and functional strength of the city center as the main structural element and in the long term, with the maturity and consolidation of a more inclusive and competitive emerging metropolitan model. This project will reveal how, starting from the present, the city is going to be able to recover the memories of the past in order to project the visions for the future.

Threefold Strategy and Strategic Project | Bogotá Images from Author

The concept of an intermodal transportation hub as the new heart of the ‘Memory Lane’ permeated by the ‘Livable Public Promenade’ is able to answer hard and soft key features of this problematic area. Working as a joint between the high and dense as well as the low and stunted urban fabric of its surroundings, the pilot project serves as gateway in two directions: it enables the physical access to an integrated transport system including the high line metro, the Transmilenio station and the connection to a trespassing bicycle path system. On the other hand, it incorporates positive economic, cultural and social benefits for its users by offering a diverse urban structure with new and dense functions.

The spatial pronunciation the Village Park one of the three local projects consists of a multilayered concept that includes as main focus high quality spaces for public life. It is framed by a mixed use building park that provokes interaction between the diverse set of actors at different hours. The new metro corridor, as a mobility daily life system but mainly as a mechanism of rehabilitation will be able to intertwine the fragmented and neglected urban fabrics improving the coexistence between the built and natural environment.

In this particular case, the scope of the regeneration of the City Center does not only apply to the people that work, live or use the space but rather extends into the perception and experience of the millions of commuters that go through this place on their daily basis. In some way, what used to represent fear and decay, now has become the statement of a more cohesive and inclusive city able to transform the collective memory of Bogotå’s citizens in order to reinforce the values of identity and sense of belonging.

Flevoland 2057 Vision and Strategy Concept | Flevoland Images from Author

Flevoland is a province of contrasts. Pristine tracts of peat grasslands and farms coexist with compact towns in a distinct but non coherent way. As land entirely reclaimed from the sea to generate more food, Flevoland is at an important standpoint today. The +EP is a kick-start that is proposed to propel growth for the upcoming five decades. An enormous requires the study of the existing qualities of the landscape. The proposal attempts to combine the current economic strong points of the region with the landscape qualities that it offers. This helps chart out an inventory that is able to extract more from existing sectors and explore other sectors that can benefit from the provincial infrastructure.

Regional Strategy and Design Concepts | Flevoland Images from Author

The functions and specifications of the cities of Dronten, Lelystad, Zeewolde and Almere as new development clusters are established with the aim of acting as complementary, subsidiary or supportive elements in order to reinforce the business environment of Metropoolregio Amsterdam. The focus is on core specializations within the Flevoland province along with pilot industries that could consider making the landscape of Flevoland their base for growth. The definition of four opportunity zones responds in the one hand to the existing functions of the different municipalities and on the other introducing new functions that could trigger the business environment for the whole province.

Threefold Strategy and Opportunity Zones | Flevoland Images from Author & Team

The timeline considers three principle steps for implementation; +Generating awareness by integrating these functions into public life. +Adaptive reuse of existing parcel in cooperation with the owner. +Integrating the intersections of the three landscapes. The +EP is a macro strategy with micro implementation paths that follows the ‘THINK BIG, ACT SMALL’ ideology. The idea is to fuse the three core projects into an integral spatial guideline that can help foresee scenarios over a period of the next hundred years for the province. Although ambitious and bold at the fore, the attempt is to give it just a little push that can propel it to the next level.

Groningen City Center | Master Plan In Collaboration with TOPOTEK 1 The focus of this project was to establish a responsive but flexible plan for the regeneration of Groningen’s City Center. During the past decades the fast urban growth has promoted the deterioration of the public spaces quality, mainly in the heart of the historic center. In this context, LOLA in collaboration with TOPOTEK 1 and the Municipality of Groningen, developed together a vision articulated by a set of strategic principles, under the name of: New City Spaces. This guidebook will become an important planning and design instrument in order to strengthen the cultural, economic and ecological values of Groningen.

Strategic Design Proposal, Design Guidetools and City Vision | Groningen’s Master Plan Images from Lola Landscape Architects Data Base

The project aimed to recover the relation between the existing urban systems: ‘Medieval inner city’, ‘Enlightenment city’ and ‘green city belt’ by proposing design principles and 7 specific spatial characterizations that could reinforce their functional and social values. By strengthening the systems individually and ensuring its role in the bigger spectrum, a better balance between the landscapes, places and actors, could be achieved. Our main task was ensuring the livability and quality of the diverse public spaces, mainly of the historical landmarks, whilst ensuring the diversity and flexibility of the dynamic urban environments.

Jonction | Strategic Local Plan Urban Design Competition Under the concept of: ‘public spaces in a sustainable neighborhood’ the proposal established by LOLA and Artgineering for the Jonction Competition Design in Brussels focused on promoting a model transformation through cohabitation. By nurturing the ecological and functional qualities, the intention of this urban park is that from the outside it could work as a publicly open system and from the inside, it could provide more private and intimate experiences. As a result, this combination of places to meet and axes to connect could promote new atmospheres and experiences able to attract a diverse set of actors that would appropriate the space in different ways. As a result, the condition of both the collective housing, surrounding neighborhoods could be certainly improved. 37

Universidad Ciudadana (Citizens University project), is established due to the qualities and opportunities that an urban renovation project could foster in Bogota’s city center. The Fenician Triangle is home to many Universities and is located in a strategical part of the city, where the interaction between multiple actors is crucial in the daily basis of a dynamic and cohesive society. The development of an open public facility, hand by hand with the incorporation of new housing typologies, well being facilities and retail stores, its vital to ensure the type of results that include an enclosed University campus with a public space that goes beyond its own limits. The project in its totality foster the generation of a new place in the city, primarily conditioned to the promotion of interaction between the students, the inhabitants and the city itself. 63
