Growing Career Pathways

There are a broad range of career opportunities in health care, and Icahn Mount Sinai is preparing students for a multitude of roles. The growth in health care is being driven by many factors, including the demographics of an aging population as well as the exponential growth of scientific discoveries and innovations, which are opening up new fields of inquiry, new treatments across all ages and populations, and robust new career opportunities.

Medical scientists are in high demand, including those in biomedical science or clinical research. Health services management is also experiencing an accelerated expansion, with 32 percent growth predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics by 2030. These include positions such as clinical coordinators, directors, and eventually people who attain vice president or senior vice president roles. With the proliferation of data, biostatisticians are being hired as soon as they graduate from our one-year program. Genetic counseling is a fast-growing field with the affordability of DNA testing. And as we confront global issues, there is a great need for epidemiologists to study the root causes of diseases and ameliorate those causes. And driving many of these fields is data science. Data science has applications in medical research, translational research, and clinical care delivery.

Many of you are still making decisions about your career pathway. The good news is there are many different avenues open to you to explore.
