you are going to live to be

W

e tend to get people in our store who are a little bit healthier than average or who are at least trying to be. Being healthier doesn’t mean you are going to live forever. It should mean, that if you take care of your body, you will be around longer than you think and so I suggest that you plan to be on this earth about 100 years. If you start thinking about longevity, that should make you focus on taking care of your body. There is no magic pill and we are all a study in chemistry, so you need to find our what works for you.

when you try on shoes. The best time to buy shoes is later in the day so that your feet are at their largest. The next thing women buy for fitness are sports bras. Sports bras come in two basic types. One is a compression bra which comes in small, medium and large and is designed to fit over your head. These types of bras are made for women with medium to smaller breasts. The next major type of bra is the encapsulated bra which comes in cup sizes and is designed for larger breasted women. As with shoes the number one consideration is fit and comfort. Remember the life of a sports bra is about six months with regular use.

One of the primary things to consider about your health is your footwear. Starting at home, you need a good pair of sandals to wear around your house. Most people have hard surfaces at home so a sandal will protect their feet from the hard surfaces and give a nice cushion feel. Sandals should match your foot type. If you have higher arches, get a more cushioned sandal and if you have a flatter foot get a more supportive sandal.

One of the major considerations about keeping your body healthy is finding the exercise routine you are willing to stay with. Running or walking routines can help you burn calories, help your immune system and help relieve everyday stress. All you need to start these routines are good fitting comfortable shoes and some exercise apparel. These products enable you to go out your front door and start exercising. No gym fees needed!

Performance footwear is the next item to consider if you are an active person. The number one thing to consider when buying performance footwear is the fit. Make sure you are properly fitted by an experienced sales person who understands what type of activity you are planning on doing. You need to make sure the shoes match up with your heel, arch and ball of the foot and that they are comfortable. Most people’s feet get flatter and longer with time, so check the length and width of the shoes to make sure they accommodate your feet properly. Don’t be overly concerned about the size because most running shoes are going to be bigger than your dress shoes. Your feet expand anywhere from one half to one and a half sizes from the morning until the end of the day, so you want to make sure you have enough room in the shoe for that adjustment. If you wear orthotics or inserts, make sure you bring those with you

A major component in staying healthy is your diet. The less processed food, the better you will feel. You need to find what combination of diet and exercise works for you. We all have time constraints so you need to set a diet and exercise plan that you will stay with. You may need a trainer for exercise and a dietician to give you a food plan. It is probable that you will live a longer life than you expected, so try to keep yourself in good physical shape and enjoy your Bill Davison, healthy life!

Find Your Fit! Reclaim Your Fun!

FITniche he Running Stores

July 2017

SMILE AND MEAN IT! Can Smiling Make You Faster? YES! As Well As Happier, Healthier, More Enduring & Quicker to Recover. Smile and Mean it! That's the #1 Rule of Running at all of our FITniche stores, and for good reason. Why, you ask? 1) Most of the best very best physiological benefits of aerobic exercise occur at extremely easy paces—paces that are easy to smile through. How easy is that? World-class runners who click off insane 4:35-4:45 mile splits in marathons routinely train in the 8-9 minute per mile range. That's almost 200% slower than their race pace! 2) We also believe that running should be fun. Our earliest exercise experiences that involved running occurred as kids. Running was pure joy back then. It was called play. Finding ways to reclaim that fun is the key to finding and maintaining lifelong motivation for running. 3) Re-framing your suffering in a race or a difficult workout by putting a smile on your face often produces brilliant results. In my 7 mile swim around Lido Key several months ago, the last 3 miles were really, really tough. I found that getting my smile back on produced almost as much lift and performance improvement as the bites of potato and Gatorade that my kayaker was rationing me.

Champions! “The power of confidence one can take from a simple smile is priceless, something that I hear time and time again from world Ironman triathlon champions Natascha Badmann and Chrissie Wellington," says coach Joanna Lawn. “They continuously say ‘smile and everything will be wonderful’. “I definitely believe there is a power of energy in this, and it is not just coincidence they both have won numerous world titles." “The road to success is simple, and it starts with a smile.”

So smile! Life is short. Enjoy it and make the most of every minute, especially your workout minutes. It's all better when you do. Rich and the Crew at you local FITniche running stores.

Samuele Marcora, a Welsh Exercise Physiologist, believes that exercise

performance is regulated egulated by perception of effort and that it is the sole cause of fatigue. In other words, he believes we bonk because we give up, and we give up because we can’t stand the suffering any longer. Forcing a smile reduces the perceived level of suffering and thus increases your performance potential. Try it! What have you got to lose?

In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred." —Karen Collins, Licensed Massage Therapist

BROOKS CONTINUES TO LEAD OVER 40 YEARS OF RUNNING SHOE INNOVATION IN PERFORMANCE AND INJURY PREVENTION Since the mid-70s, Brooks has been the most prolific innovator of the most functional, adaptable and safe running shoes available – “A Perfect Ride for Every Stride”. Whether you prefer a soft, springy, fast or down-to-earth ride, Brooks makes a shoe for you. Some notable firsts for Brooks, versions of which are still used by most companies today: EVA-based cushioning, stability shoes, removable insoles, reflectivity, two-density outsoles, top-line-control lacing to lock-in the heel, segmented crash pads for smooth heel contact, and many more that competitors have not been able to duplicate. Fully dedicated to protecting the runner and enhancing running performance, Brooks has recently taken such a large step forward in biomechanical research and footwear development that it will take years for other companies to catch up. Following is discussion around some of these innovations created to help keep runners pain and injury-free. Brooks realized early on that one model shoe with the same materials, cushioning and/or stability characteristics cannot optimally work for a 90 pound person as well as a 350 pound person. That is what will be found in a typical running shoe – too firm and/or stable for the 90 pound person and progressively too soft and/or unstable for the 350 pound person. The same consideration has to be made as to whether a runner is light or heavy on his or her feet – a lot to consider. Brooks has taken all the guess-work out of the weight and gait issue by designing midsoles which adapt proportionally to the amount of force applied to them. Appropriately named BioMogoDNA, they respond softer to lighter runners and progressively firmer to heavier and heavier runners. This gives the individual the proper amount of custom cushioning and shock absorption, safely adapting to every step taken. Basically, the same shoe reacts totally differently to every runner running in it. As an added “green” benefit, Brooks’ midsoles are also uniquely biodegradable. When it comes to stability, not every runner needs the same amount, right? Some need a little and some need a lot. And those who need a little when they begin their run may need a lot by the end of a long run as their form deteriorates. Brooks’ Progressive Diagonal Rollbar is designed to offer mild support when the runner doesn’t need much, but more and more as fatigue sets in, continually adapting to the runner’s changing biomechanical needs. When it comes to all important forefoot flexibility, how does a runner know if his or her shoes flex where their feet flex? I say feet because even the same person can have substantially different flex points in each foot. Even the best running stores cannot tell you this. A less than perfectly matched foot/shoe flex-point can account for a wide array of running pain and injury. Brooks knew this back in the ‘70s and has since designed into all of their shoes, fully adaptable flexibility, for any foot shape. And, what about the future? Well, it’s here, and it takes adaptability to the next level. The Brooks Transcend is the first shoe to intrinsically help control a wide variety of injury-causing motion issues without the weight and firmness of higher densities in the midsole. The premise is based on the fact that every individual has his or her own preferred path of motion. Basically, everyone runs differently. By studying this individuality, Brooks’ highly innovative Guide Rail concept not only allows for individual differences in gait pattern, but aids the foot when it begins to veer of course. Talk about a smart shoe, not only does it adapt to your personal biomechanics, cushioning and shock absorption needs, but your stability needs as well – a step closer to a one-shoe-fits-all product. So, whether you are a neutral runner or one who oversupinates or overpronates, try this shoe on. I’m sure soon, all Brooks shoes will have a version of this. Someday all running shoes probably will, too. Brooks didn’t get to be the #1 brand in specialty running by being just another running shoe. If you are looking for enhanced performance, want to continue to be pain-free or are currently having running pain issues, let your local running store help find the proper pair for you. If new to Brooks you may ask yourself: “Why didn’t I find them sooner?” Preview - interested in a cushioned “propulsion” shoe? Check out the Levitate – coming in November! Road Bike or Tri Bike? The question of the decade! As a bike shop owner I get numerous athletes coming in looking for either a first bike or an upgrade to their existing ride. A common question I get is “Should I purchase a road bike or a tri bike?” The answer to this is complex and very individual. The first thing I always ask is “Why are you buying or upgrading the bike?” The key is listening to their answer and helping direct them to the proper bicycle to fit their needs. First, the choices involved. Road bike, time trial bike and triathlon bike. Each have distinctive purposes. The biggest difference is geometry of each bicycle. A road bike will generally have a 73-75-degree seat post geometry. A time trial bike generally has a 75-77-degree geometry and a triathlon bike has a 7881-degree geometry. As the geometry gets steeper, it brings the rider further forward, more towards the middle of the bike and further over the front wheel. A road bike with the more slack geometry and generally lighter overall gives this style of bike the ability to do 4 things well. Accelerate, sprint, climb and handling. Each of these qualities are very important in road racing and group riding. The TT bike is developed for UCI time trials. One of the rules of UCI is the nose of the saddle cannot be more than 5mm forward of the middle of the crank. So, there is no need to have more of an aggressive seat tube angle. The triathlon bike has the 78-81 degree more aggressive seat tube angle. It is proven that the creating more weight toward the middle and front of the bike allows the bike to continue at a faster consistent speed with less effort. So back to the answer. If an athlete is looking to use the bike for many purposes including group rides, and maybe a few triathlons then the general rule of thumb is to lean towards a road bike. Not as fast in triathlons but more versatile uses for the bike. If you are looking to do time trials then the tt or triathlon bike will fit your purposes, just make sure the bicycle is UCI legal. (There are rules on the bike that have to be followed and some triathlon bikes are not UCI legal) If you are purchasing a bike to do triathlons and that is the major reason then there is no question that the triathlon bike is the way to go. Because of the geometry, the tri bike is easier to keep at higher consistent speeds with less effort. Along with the forward positioning is more conducive to the bike to run transition of muscles. Know the reason you are purchasing the bike. Make sure you talk to knowledgeable and experienced associates that can help you in this major investment. The proper bike, size and proper fit will be the keys to your success in your next bike. COMING BICYCLE CHANGES FOR THE ROADS OF ST. PETERSBURG I, along with many of my fellow St. Pete bike club members had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by Mr. Lucas Cruse, with the City’s Transportation and Parking Management Department, who specializes in bicycle and pedestrian routes in St. Petersburg. Lucas is an engaging speaker, who fielded all questions asked, even some not within his area of responsibility, with humor and intelligence. Sharrows, the painted image of a bicycle with double arrows above the bike in the direction of travel, were a hot topic, especially with the coming changes to our east-west main traffic routes: First avenues north and south, and Central avenue. Correctly painted sharrows should be squarely in the middle of the lane of traffice. Check out Central Avenue west of 16th street, and you will notice the location; the intent of which is to confirm bicycles have the right to “take the road” in the middle of the lane, where there’s not enough room to ride to the right side and allow a motor vehicle to pass. The concept of bicycle safety and shared lane markings will require extensive education of everyone using the roads, including the increasing use of informational signs with a bicycle image and the words “may use full lane.” You can see such signs on Central avenue as well. I encourage all area cyclists to make it their mission to be informed about bicycle safety, to meet Lucas Cruse when possible, and to be willing to voice your opinion about changes and suggestions that may allow all of us to be on our roads in a more safe environment. You can find more information on bicycle safety by going to www.stpete.org/transportation. There are periodic postings of cycling info including the progress of local bike trails, changes in traffic patterns, and other useful information for we cyclists. Be safe out there.

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
