Rental Tip: GOT THE ITCH? As we head into Spring in the upper Midwest an annual phenomenon begins to take place with those of us who ride. The need to get on our scoots and catch some wind becomes a drive that falls second only to that one that “keeps people populating the planet” if you know what I mean (wink wink). Unfortunately, the weather does not often cooperate at this time of year. Yeah, there might be a nice day for ridin’ that crops up every now and again but wouldn’t you know it ends up fallin’ on a Wednesday or some other inopportune time. One thing seems to be almost for sure…schedule that all-day ride with you and your bros (and/or sisters) and chances are good to excellent that it will be cold, rainy or both! So…what is Plan B you ask? Here it is…pick a kick-ass ride destination with mind-blowing roads and jaw-dropping scenery within a single days ride. Phoenix and Las Vegas are just 2 spots that come to mind. I am talking’ about places like Death Valley, Zion Natl Park and Bryce Canyon out of Vegas and Sedona, Tucson and the Grand Canyon out of Phoenix… these rides are the real deal boys and girls if they are not on your bucket list now… they sure ought to be! This time I’m going to talk to you about high mileage bikes, many of us ride and there are some of us that ride a lot of miles a year. Now whether you keep the same bike or trade it off every couple years. The thing you have to remember is that if you’re riding a high mileage bike (50,000 miles or more); when you do your regular service, make sure you check things out. Not just wear on brakes bearings and such but check other things out. For example, if your handlebar isolator mounts are worn out that means they have been under a lot of strain, for sure if you have ape hangers, so a lot of people would change the isolators. But they never give any thought to the riser bolts, if the riser isolators are worn out you can bet the bolts are fatigued as well and could possibly break causing a much worse problem then the rubbers. Another example would be tires and bearings, everybody changes their tires and wheel bearings (I hope) but did you ever think of the axle or the axle nuts or washers? Or even more important check the swing arm or fork lowers, when changing your rear tire or checking the bearings. Look at the swingarm, this is especially true on baggers, dyna and fx type swingarms, you want to look at where the axle and the axle nut and washer meet the swingarm this is a weak point on the swingarm. What happens especially on high mileage bikes is that from continuous tire changes and service and possible over tightening the metal begins to wear and give you a place for a possible crack and because the washer or the axle head covers up the area from sight it usually goes unnoticed. If you check this and find a hairline crack, you have two options. First is to find a good used swingarm (good luck), second you can take it to a welding shop or bike shop that does welding and have them reinforce the swingarm in these areas. The reason I bring these last two items up is that they just recently were found on a bike in our shop, not two different bikes but the same bike. 8

When it was brought in for a broken riser bolt he had a list of things he wanted fixed and checked out. After doing the riser isolators and bolts and a few other things we went to check the rear wheel bearings, when taking off the bags to perform the work we discovered that not only was the swingarm cracked but it was completely broken off and the only thing holding it in place was the axle nut and washer. Had the axle come loose the outcome would have been horrific. After seeing this we checked another bagger in the shop and sure enough the swingarm was starting to crack on that one as well. Both bikes having over 50,000 miles, so the point I’m trying to make here is you could be the most service oriented person changing oil fluids bearings etc. like both of these customers were, and still u can find more things if you look. Remember if the part is worn look at what it’s attached to or what its being attached with, and this could also need your attention or replacement. Steel and aluminum are not indestructible; it can wear and fail just as tires bearings and other parts. Just a thought if you’re riding that “one owner original bike” with high miles, it might be time to check some of those not so scheduled maintenance items, see ya next time… Jim Jones

Safety Feature Curve Negotiation
By Woodstock Harley-Davidson Riding School Robert Shelton, Instructor 2011 is here and a new riding season is upon us! One of my absolute riding joys is riding through Sweeping curves. Ahhhhhhhh, there’s nothing like a bit of lean and just cruising through the turns. It is just raw joy going though curves on a motorcycle. However, if a curve is misjudged or not negotiated properly the joy is removed and it can be a down and out raw experience. I would like to provide some thoughts and guidance here to keep the joy in your curves this new season. Curves come in all different shapes and sizes. The same holds true for the roads we ride on. And, if not handled properly trouble can be gotten into. Some of the things that can cause difficulty with curves are critters coming out on you, or coming into a curve too fast and braking improperly, or not using proper head and eye technique, or misjudging a road condition such as debris, sand or gravel on the surface, or any combination of these. Let’s explore these items and minimize their ability to influence our ability to negotiate curves. Typical Curves are sweepers, turns and switchbacks. They can be long and lean. They can be short and stout. The long and lean sweepers are fun because you can glide right through them. The short and stout ones can be dicey because they require you to properly lean, maneuver and throttle through the curve. If there is any doubt regarding speed, debris, sand or critters then slow down. It is always better to slow down before you get to the curve rather than in the curve. Once you are in the curve roll on the throttle and go through the curve. This loads the suspension and allows you to lean the motorcycle into the curve. If you have to brake while in the curve, straighten the motorcycle first and then apply braking. When you apply brakes while in the curve the motorcycle automatically works to straighten upright and you lose your ability to lean and negotiate the turn. When you are moving at speed greater than roughly 15mph you push in the direction you want to go. If you want to go to the left you push on the left handlebar. If you want to go to the right you push on the

right handlebar. When you push to the left or right it automatically causes the motorcycle to lean in that direction and consequently go in that direction. Your motorcycle’s lean limit is pretty low. Most folks are sketchy about scraping the pegs. If your pegs or boards scrape it’s ok, don’t panic, keep pressing on your bar, ease through and continue on. Eye and head position are important. Your motorcycle always goes where you look. Look through the curve and drive through it. I tend to look as far through the curve as I can and keep my eys and head level with the horizon. I don’t fixate on lines and objects. If you fixate on an object or line you’ll drive right to it. Therefore, try not to fixate on cars, lines or road shoulders. I hope this segment will bring a bit more joy in safely navigating all those luscious and gracious curves we see out on our rides. Until next time, only you can determine how good you want to be.... What cha’ digging up? ...everyone’s a Picker
Even before the show became popular pickers were abundant, they just did not have such a glorious title. Whatever the intent, cob web laced cycles are being dragged out of the back shed, dug from under tons of paper in the garage and rescued from the entwining grip of a buckthorn that has engulfed a foot rest and managed to work its way thru the frame, (remember the saw?). After you have managed to get it home, now the sixty four thousand dollar question hits the fan, (after you wife gets done with you for dragging home a “collectable”, if only she shared your vision), what does it need and where do I get it. Before you do anything to your new find, know what your goal is: 10/10 restoration, something to ride for the kid, Rat bike to quench the midlife, or just something to work on to get out of the house. Now set it up for a photo shoot, get it well lit and take pictures of everything, since we are not supporting our local Fotomat anymore there is no reason to be stingy, take pictures of every item on the cycle while it is still on. Now the fun, the dissection, as you take each piece off, take a picture of it on the cycle then take pictures of it after it is off, making sure to capture any unique features. For the parts you plan on replacing print a picture and write any factory part numbers and dimensions. Even if you are making a Rat, it is good to know what you are replacing. With the growth of the web, finding parts has become much easier, but as always buyer beware, if you are buying on an auction site make sure to ask plenty of questions especially if the seller has only a couple of feedbacks, ask for dimensions and additional pictures to verify it is a good part and what you need. If they are not taking care of you up front they are not going to help you once the honeymoon is over and they have your extra beer money. At Milwaukee Cycle the bulk of the business is used metric parts (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha), there are 23,000 sq. ft. of parts from the 60’s to present. All of the parts are labeled and inventoried but there are also a couple hundred standing donor cycles. If someone knows exactly what they want they can bring it to the counter or if they’re trying to stir the creative juices… then pack a lunch and 14
browse. It makes everyone’s life a little easier when the parts that someone is trying to replace are brought in (although leave motors outside). You can lay the parts next to each other to verify the match and with gas prices at close to $4 per gallon no one wants an extra trip. Whatever your goal is for your picked treasure, bring in your worn, tired and decayed, the new owners at Milwaukee Cycle’s goal is to help you meet yours. Attorney Tip: Helmet Laws and Insurance: an insidious relationship by Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo
What do helmet laws and insurance have to do with each other? Interestingly more than one might suspect. There is an annual attempt to repeal mandatory helmet laws from a number of states, notably Michigan. As seen in other states attempting such legislation, a condition was added to the bill language calling for additional medical pay coverage in the amount of $20,000. ABATE of Michigan has been fighting the mandate since its inception and ABATE member Mike Poage points out that bikers should already have the $20,000 medical coverage under the state’s insurance plan. Michigan has no-fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. Motorcyclists are entitled to PIP even though they are not required to carry PIP insurance. One of the biggest problems in securing helmet law repeals is the argument that bikers sustain serious injuries that aren’t covered by minimum limits of insurance, thus the need for add on medical coverage. In Michigan, that might not be the case. The bigger problem is that while helmet law proponents’ call for bikers to carry more medical coverage, these same people do not call for an increase in minimum insurance coverage. Michigan, for instance, has a $20/40/10 plan, which is woefully inadequate. In Wisconsin, an insurance law change in 2009 increased Wisconsin’s minimums to $50/100/100 and the ability to stack multiple policies. That was great, except in the wisdom of a new administration, the law is on a fast track to go back to the inadequate minimums of $25/50/10. Illinois was also considering an increase in minimum coverage of insurance, recognizing that the current limits did not cover any substantial injuries. If bikers were at fault the majority of the time in accidents, it might lend to the argument that they should carry more medical insurance. The opposite is true in that most times in multiple vehicle crashes, it’s the other vehicle that caused the crash. Yet there is a trend to somehow hold the victim accountable by requiring more insurance and sometimes mandatory rider training to ride helmet free. Some states are not buying into this shallow thinking. The State of Washington is considering HB1984, which completely removes all language referring to mandatory use of motorcycle helmets, with no additional provisions. It’s what motorcycle rights activists call a “clean bill.” In this writer’s opinion, mandatory minimum levels of insurance have to increase to at least catch up with the inflation rates. Many of these limits were set back in the 1980’s or earlier. To maintain inadequate limits of insurance while claiming victims of crashes are becoming burdens to society is pure hypocrisy. To insist riders must carry additional personal medical coverage in order to ride without a helmet is despotic. 16

I love food. But better than anything I could ever make in the kitchen, I make better reservations. And there will always be someone who can make a dish better than me. So I will do what I do best, ride... and enjoy what they do best, cook! This column will be an ongoing feature as we explore our riding area looking for and directing you to some of those little known treasures of food bliss to add to your destination rides. The Shanty on Hwy 41 in Wadsworth, IL is a place that once you discover, you will always go back. A comfortable rustic atmosphere, this is a place where quality food meets a fair price. Known for their quality food, including: steaks, chops, burgers, and seafood. Recently, featured on the Food Network show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” which highlighted their Whiskey Shrimp, Tequila & Orange Salmon and the Filet Mignon. All of the dishes are customer inspired, so when you’re planning your trip in Northeast Illinois plan your route to The Shanty at 38995 North US Hwy 41, Wadsworth Il 60083. They are open Monday through Saturday 11am – 10pm and Sunday 7am – 9pm. My personal favourite is the eggs Benedict on Sunday Morning!! Spokes Bar & Deli was built in August 2004 by Naval Veteran, Larry Wojtecki who owned and ran L.W. Meats and Deli in Elm Grove, Wisconsin for 30 years were his “Two Wheel Tuesday” event was started. The environment is like a museum of motorcycles and memorabilia and hand painted murals on the wall offer surprise images to the keen eye while you’re waiting on your freshly made plates. Quarter pound Brats, Hot Dogs, and Hot Polish are a special on Two Wheel Tuesday from 4pm – 10pm and their other daily specials and cold drinks make this a must visit when you are in the area. You will find Spokes Bar & Deli just east of the I-94 / Hwy. 20 (exit 333), at 14001 Washington Ave., Yorkville, WI 53177. Everything on Larry’s menu is my favourite and everyone on your ride will enjoy this stop. The Kelsey Road House South Barrington, IL, Now offering Gino’s East Pizza Menu and a full menu including sandwiches, salads, steaks and daily specials. A great outdoor patio is open during nice weather and there is plenty of parking. This is a great destination with a great atmosphere and great food. The Kelsey Road House is at 352 Kelsey Road (just off Hwy 14), Lake Barrington, IL. Beverly is a welcoming host and I’m just waiting for the weather to break to visit again for the pizza. There is a poster floating around with a big bad biker on it that states “Fears No Man, Soccer Mom’s Scare Him” well, I do not fear soccer moms, I fear apathy. For those that don’t know Apathy is the absence of interest in or enthusiasm for things generally considered moving. For me, I like to call it the “whatevah” syndrome. There is such a lack of interest in fighting for motorcycle rights that it scares me to the core! A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois is tap dancing hard to get bikers out there motivated again to fight for their rights and we are losing that particular fight! Here in Illinois we have won so many battles against government interference in our rights to ride free that most bikers figure “why get involved!” or “hey, we be okay!”. Well guess what sweetpea – we ain’t! NHSTB has now release the Ten Top Most Wanted pamphlet to all the States including our supposedly fail safe state and Motorcycles are in this list! This government sponsored program is insisting that all motorcyclists wear helmets and full safety gear! I am sure you have all heard that Motorcycle Only Mandatory Safety Checks are in full swing and coming to a road near you! You can be stopped, checked, searched and this is all under the cover of “education”! They are also dangling the carrot of cash to itty bitty towns we all love to ride through to conduct these invasive searches – and ya know what? They are biting! Hey I don’t blame them! If I had Uncle Sam giving me well needed cash to my town of 200 just to stop a few bikers? Ya see the picture Spike? Well I want motorcycle education to remain back in the hands of A.B.A.T.E. and not used as a tool from some non-riding bureaucrats dipping their greasy little hands into my rights to ride as I want to! I want to send a message to the NHSTB boys that we are not playing into their poker hand of their own personal agendas! I want to stop these unconstitutional searches! How do we all do that? Dale’s Diatribe: But I digress…
Dale Lumovic President, D.R.ILL. Like many of you, I have an interesting commute to work every morning. I travel from my home in central Lake County in Illinois to my office about 15 miles from my home. The road I travel is one of favorites in the county. Slightly hilly, curvy and with a speed limit that makes the trip enjoyable even when I’m not on my Ducati or any number of other bikes at my disposal. Something I’ve noticed since moving to this area is that other motorists are too busy with other things in their vehicles to enjoy this route or their own commute to where ever it is that their travels are taking them. Often times during what should be the “morning rush”, they’re fussing with electric shavers, applying makeup, checking messages or simply playing with their personal electronic devices to take in the beauty of this road and make the most of this moment in driving pleasure. Have we lost touch with immersing ourselves in what cars and bikes bring out emotionally when we get behind the wheel or throw a leg over a saddle? From my experience I believe we have. It’s become a chore more than a passion. The speed limit in this area is posted as 50 miles per hour, yet many times I’m trapped behind a column where the front car is driving at 10 miles per hour below that limit even when the road is dry and the morning sky is crisp, sunny and beautiful. In this two lane roadway, other motorists can’t even manage to keep their vehicle between the lines although they’re traveling at much less than the limit, because they’re distracted by doing something other than focusing on driving. “Arrgghhh! Com’on now people,” I find myself screaming inside my helmet as I observe bad behavior day after day from a wide range of drivers from many age groups and both genders as I try to enjoy this short jump to my daily druthers at my job. What is the point of this rant? Well on the weekends it’s not a lot different except that I get the joy of seeing many groups of riders out with their buddies and significant others enjoying this stretch of road in the same way I do, and as much as seeing their rush of riding being impeded by the mindless drones. After all the sensation of flying just above the pavement is what makes me love riding and those that chose to limit that joy that comes in riding at the posted speed limit (and perhaps occasionally above it) is what brings many of us to riding in the first place. I’m not suggesting that we do anything illegal, but what the @$%*! …But I digress. 27

How many of you have lost a riding buddy to “love”? I can recall on a quick audit that I have lost too many to be happy about. We’ve all been there, riding on the weekend, was the first thing we thought of as we punched the clock on Friday to once again enjoy our weekly two day holiday. Ringing up all the guys to plan a trip to…anywhere our collective noses were pointing. Sharing this time was the thing that made the prior five days tolerable. Getting out on the road with these guys was like the time we were kids getting everybody from the neighborhood out for a pick-up game of football or baseball except that we’ve exchanged those sporting goods for leathers, helmets, and boots. Then out of the blue, love steps in the way. The kind of love that does not share our passion of riding. The kind of love that convinces us that riding is a dangerous pursuit and it would be wiser not to ride, than to get out and fly by the seat of your pants. The kind of love that takes that buddy away from us and what we thought was his infinite love for being with us and watching the odometer count up higher numbers with every passing minute. The kind of love that shouts, “it would much safer to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond to shop for towels.” Arrgghhh! “ Com’on now people!!! Are you kidding me? I too was one of these folks. Until I saw the errors of my ways and came back to what I knew was my passion. I’ve never looked back. Thanks to riding, I’ve had the pleasure to meet and become friends with folks that I would not have were I not part of this community. Not had adventures, good and bad, that we look back on and laugh about today. Not seen places from the saddle that can’t be mimicked behind a steering wheel or postcard. Why not work to convince the “loves of our lives” to share in this joy and if not in the saddle with us, on their own rides. I’m convinced that once they’ve had a chance to see what we see and feel what we feel, they too will become intoxicated by its ability to make you feel like nothing else does. I’m working on my wife. She’s reluctant, but when I point out how many other ladies ride with great pleasure and little danger, it makes her do a double take and consider perhaps it’s the correct choice if she wants to be with me and our friends on certain weekends. It takes the right kind of bike, but there is something out there for everybody and their individual tastes. Riding is life, and life is not always meant to be taken in, by small sips from it vessel. Sometimes it’s good to take it in with big sloppy gulps. This is what riding means to many of us and I welcome it with a healthy dose. But I digress…
