We are excited about two new partnerships one with Road Hawgs Monthly Newsletters for our Motorcycle R.A.G. members and Mad Maps for our quarterly map feature with great scenic roads and Points of Interest to be discovered. Sign up on the web site for the newsletter and visit Mad Maps for a large selection of their great riding maps available. You’ll see we’ve expanded the issue to share with you runs & events in neighboring states so your adventures will never take you too far from home and our brothers and sisters who ride there will discover more about our area and the best it has to offer. If you haven’t met them yet we would like to introduce you to new members of our team, Ellie and Joe. In addition to launching and managing a great new Midwest Women Riders Group page on Facebook, Ellie has joined us as an Account Manager and has helped a great number of area businesses new to the guide share their information with our readers. She is a good friend and a welcomed addition to our team. Joe is a fun, young and tall photographer and web guy who you will see around at events Snapping Shots for R.A.G. and he’ll be working with us to keep our web-site sharp and timely. We are lucky to have them both. We will always be a FREE resource focused on content that matters most to you, the local rider. Not a coupon book you have to pay for or a book full of ads. So please be comfortable sharing your ideas with us. Road and Food destinations, Runs & Events and communities are all out there to be discovered throughout the year. And every quarter we will continue to be a source to help you find them. Remember our Advertisers and Sponsors who make this FREE guide possible. Stop in and tell them you saw them in the guide and if you know of any business who would like motorcyclists to learn more about what they do. We would love to talk with them. Road and Food: Living to Ride...Riding to Eat

By Joe Stormin’ Norman and Rockin’ Robin www.roadandfood.com

The riding season has been a slow start for me due to a personal injury so my food adventures haven’t taken me too far from home but as they say some of the greatest things to do and see are in your own back yard. So let me tell you about a couple that I have discovered. Attention all BIG BOY EATERS like me!!! Kickstand Bar & Grill in Camp Lake, WI may be off of the beaten path in a little one horse town but the food options on a select menu offer big bite flavor. It has an old school biker bar feel with great food and always ice cold drinks, which are both very affordable. A large appetizer menu to start, I order Cajun chicken tenders which were the perfect combination of blackened seasoning but the homemade chicken tenders were surprisingly juicy. Add a side order of special seasoned waffle fries; I could have eaten a pound of them if my body would have let me… After my appetizers I took a deep breath to prepare myself for the special event. The signature famous Kickstand’s Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich! Now being from the east coast I have had my share of some of the best known Cheese Steaks in the world (Gino’s & Pat’s in PA) and this by comparison I have to say… is better. The portion and quality of the meat, provolone cheese, grilled peppers, onions and mayo (which I wasn’t expecting) tasted so good...I ate it slowly so the flavor would last longer. Now here is a fact. The restaurant down the road, took their cheese steak off the menu because it didn’t compare (and it’s staff and owners order lunch from Kickstands)… I want to thank the father and son owners of Kickstand Bar & Grill, Ken and Steve for making me feel at home and a shout out to Kellie behind the bar! Make Kickstand Bar & Grill a riding destination and come hungry.

Being an Elvis nut, I love Memphis BBQ… Hell I just love BBQ and now there is a great place in Fox Lake, IL. Mogies Bad Boy BBQ in Fox Lake has many unique appetizers and one of my all-time favorites are the Deep Fried Pickles!! Mogies does a great job with two choices of this special treat, BBQ or regular and both are great! And my prediction for a “New American Comfort Food” the Loaded Twisted Pipe. A foot-long deep-fried hotdog wrapped in twisted fries and served with corn bread, BBQ baked beans and cheese. I had a kick-ass slab of ribs and the best BBQ chicken I have ever had. I don’t know how “Bad Boy” Ray does it? I’m just glad he does. Check out his weekly specials on the facing page. There is so much to talk about the best I can do is convince you to stop by and try it yourself and tell Ray that Stormin’ sent you... Every Wednesday evening Ray and his better half Kortnee host a fun bike night with a DJ, games and drink specials from the Dwight house and of course great BBQ.

I want to personally thank Ray for helping me break up with Jenny Craig and enjoying a finger-licking good lifestyle again. A big welcome to Rockin’ Robin, a great addition to our team, local rider and foodie who has some additional food places featured below and will be contributing to our web-site features regularly. Go to the website and submit a review of one of your favorite food destination, for your chance to win Living to Ride… Riding to Eat Gear and lunch on us! See you on the road. As a new contributor to Motorcycle R.A.G. I’m enthusiastic at the opportunity to lead you to exciting spots to fill your bellies and cool your pipes. First stop: Twisted Cuisine, 7546 Sheridan Rd., Kenosha, WI 53143 262-564-0220 www.twistedcuisine.com - You can also find and like them on Facebook. This is a place for the adventurous diner for casual gourmet fare with a “twist”. Owners Heidi Naef and Rhonda Bell along with Chef Erika Buskirk offer a fun atmosphere with great food and service. Our feast began with a lobster spinach dip, served with baguette rounds; rich and creamy, the perfect prelude to our dinner. 2012 Summer Volume II - Issue 17 - Midwest Rider Activity Guide - Motorcycle R.A.G.

I was torn between the Lobster Mac & Cheese (highly recommended by our server) or the Parmesan Encrusted Rib Eye. The Rib Eye won out and was cooked to perfection accompanied by a bake sweet potato served with whipped cinnamon butter, YUM! My dining companion chose the Sour Cream & Onion Potato Chip breaded Perch (offered on Friday’s only – along with other Friday Fish Fry Specials). Also melt in your mouth delicious. Stuffed full from dinner, I chose a liquid dessert; a German Chocolate Cake Martini, The perfect ending to a fantastic meal. Next time I must indulge in the Fruit Loop Cheesecake; individual cheesecakes encrusted in crushed Fruit Loops, deep-fried and served with a Mango Sauce. Other popular dishes are: Fried Cheese Ravioli served in a Sun Dried Tomato and Artichoke Cream Sauce, Alligator Chenier – alligator meat pounded thin, stuffed with a crab stuffing, served with a marinara sauce, Buffalo Ribs and the Throwback Scallops. Seasonal specials may include Snapping Turtle, Yak or Kangaroo and there are always creative weekend specials. Service was informative, friendly and efficient. Parking at Twisted Cuisine is limited, however Advanced Auto across the street graciously allows parking along the north fence line in their lot. Reservations are recommended on the weekends. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted Open Tuesday – Thursday for lunch and dinner. Friday and Saturday for dinner starting at 4 p.m. My second review will lead you to my favorite kick back, close to home spot that is my regular Sunday “on the way home from a great ride” stop. Sand Bar & Island Grill, 3101 E Lakeshore Dr.,Twin Lakes, WI 53181 - 262-877-9500 - www.snadbarandislandgrillTL.com This little island paradise can be found on the shores of the Lake Elizabeth Marina in Twin Lakes, WI. Opened in 2009 by Carlo DiCarlo this open-air establishment gives a Key West feeling and is shared by both bikers and boaters. The food is awesome; service is great and the view even better. A great place to watch the boats come to shore or a beautiful summer sunset. My weeklong anticipated Blackened Grouper Sandwich served with a homemade lemon and aioli sauce on a bakery bun served with crispy Sweet Potato fries had me drooling. Also amazing is the Seafood Slider Combo; one crab lake slider, one blackened grouper slider and one teriyaki tuna slider. Fresh shucked oysters and fresh steamed mussels bathed in a garlic butter and white wine are offered on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Also gaining rave reviews is the Homemade Smoked Fish Spread served with pita chips and the hand breaded Duck Tenders served with raspberry BBQ sauce. And to wet your whistle I highly recommend the Tropical Long Island, or one of the daily drink specials. A Rum Chata Mudslide satisfied my craving for something sweet. The Sand Bar and Island Grill is kid friendly and offers a treasure chest filled with toys and activities to keep the little ones entertained while the big kids kick back and enjoy the surroundings. Reservations can be made on line: or by calling. Cash, Visa, MC and AX are accepted. Open 7 days a week at 11 a.m. Parking across the street in their private parking lot. I hope that you’ll give these establishments a try next time you’re out for a ride in southeastern, WI. Please send me suggestions of your favorite stops and I’ll gladly take a scoot to review. Anyone know of a place with fantastic Fish Tacos? Whatever it is, it’s better in the wind. - rockinrobin@mc-rag.com 2012 Summer Volume II - Issue 17 - Midwest Rider Activity Guide - Motorcycle R.A.G.

Safety Feature

Loose Change By Robert Shelton, Instructor Woodstock Harley-Davidson Riding School Woodstock, IL. How many of us pay attention to pennies, nickels and dimes? That’s what I figured, not many. You get the change back from small purchases and it turns into an annoyance in your pocket and what to you do but toss it onto a counter, table or dresser. After a bit it piles up and is all over the place and it needs to be cleaned up and converted. Gravel is a lot like loose change which should have much more attention paid to it. Gravel is loose change on the roads and intersections. Gravel is one of the most annoying not to mention dangerous conditions when spread on pavement while driving through the many miles of back roads. It can bring a bike down in no time if the rider is not paying attention. I know this from personal experience. This season, I have found quite a large percentage of four wheeled vehicle drivers to be quite less than excellent in their driving abilities. In fact I constantly see drivers cross over the center lines into my lane coming through turns and sweepers. I also see many drivers edge the shoulders where they kick up gravel into the turns. Here are my thoughts on the best way to handle loose change gravel on the road and get it converted into a non-event situation so that you can continue on with your ride and return home to relax and have your favorite beverage. Pay attention and look at the turn or sweeper and see if there is gravel. Slow down a bit before the turn or sweeper. If I have never been through this turn before, then I slow down. I don’t know what to expect. As I have stated before, I err to the side of caution. One slip up can ruin an entire riding season. Most of the time gravel gets swept out of the tire tracks and you wind up with gravel in the center of the road and some on the sides but clean on the tire tracks. Therefore, it is important to maintain and hold your line of tracking. Stay in the outside or inside track and maintain your track all the way through the turn or sweeper. If you try to cut an apex you’ll be going right over the gravel in the middle and you could most certainly have an incident that will make for an unpleasant end to your day. As much as a throttle jockey as I can be, I pay very close attention to turns, intersections, and sweepers for gravel. I am constantly on the lookout for gravel. When the road is clear of debris or gravel then I enjoy my ride to the fullest extent. But, when I find loose change on the pavement, I am prepared to slow down and handle the situation without incident. I write these words to truly make you more aware and be more alert to gravel that can come up on you. This way you are better prepared and ready for when the unexpected comes up on you. Until next time, only you can determine how good a rider you are. 12

Pandemonium: Star Studded Workforce at Hupy and Abraham, S.C. By Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo Founder, ABATE of Wisconsin Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame, 2002 I was going to write about some of the issues facing bikers these days, like noise ordinances, checkpoints, etc., but instead I thought I’d brag a little about the people I work for and with at Hupy and Abraham, S.C.. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of attorney ads, some good, some not and some that just pissed me off. I get a kick out of the guy in a three piece suit standing next to a Harley claiming that he’s a biker attorney. Then there’s the ads that insist that you must hire an attorney that rides because only he knows what motorcycle cases are all about. Right! Don’t get me wrong, an attorney that rides is cool but it doesn’t mean as much to me as an attorney who is a good litigator. I’ve seen riding attorneys that I wouldn’t let handle a parking ticket for me. Once you get past if the attorney is good or not, then you should ask, “What does he give back to the bike community?” Well, after years of fighting for bikers rights and consulting with scores of different attorneys I think I’ve found a good home with the attorneys at Hupy and Abraham, S.C. Do our attorneys ride? Some of them do, including partner Jason Abraham. More importantly, they have winning records in court. Partners Michael Hupy and Jason Abraham are Board Certified Civil Trial Specialists, members of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, and partner Chad Kreblin was twice named Super Lawyer Rising Star, classifying him in the top 2% of all Wisconsin lawyers under the age of 40. All of our attorneys have winning records and we have offices in Milwaukee, Madison, Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin as well as Gurnee, Bloomington and Rockford, Illinois. Our motorcycle division is comprised of bikers who work hand in hand with the attorneys and motorcycle clients. I’ve been honored to work for Hupy and Abraham, S.C. for over 20 years as a motorcycle accident investigator. I am a founder of ABATE of Wisconsin (1974), an EMT and Accident Scene Management instructor, first person to be inducted into the Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame in Sturgis (2002) and a member of the Lawmakers, founded by Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell. 14

- from left Attorney Tim Schelwat, Investigator Rich Kuchenbecker and Investigator Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo arriving at Hupy and Abraham, S.C. Milwaukee office.

2012 Summer Volume II - Issue 17 - Midwest Rider Activity Guide - Motorcycle R.A.G.

Lead investigator and property damage handler, Gary Fordham has been a member of the biker community since the early 1970’s. He has helped settle over $10,000,000 in property damage claims and used to own a biker bar in Waukesha, Wisconsin after retiring as president of a local motorcycle club there. Another motorcycle accident investigator, Gary “Quinn” Schmidt, is a fixture in the motorcycle community in Milwaukee and past president of an old and established club. He’s also trained in several martial arts disciplines and was a personal trainer in the past. Drew Webb is a property damage handler in our Milwaukee office and has performed in a number of classic rock bands in Milwaukee, including his former band Doctor Snake Oil. His current band is Snake Bite and Drew also performed in Sturgis with Martin Jack Rosenblum’s Spirit Farm Band. Rich Kuchenbecker has joined the Milwaukee staff as an investigator and he brings a rich background to the job. He retired as Deputy Chief for the Village of East Troy Police Department, ran security for Alpine Valley Musical Festival and worked in Police Sales for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. New to our Gurnee, Illinois office is Linda “Jo” Giovannoni. Jo is an icon in the motorcycle community, growing up in the Chicago area. Not only was it rare to see a woman on a motorcycle when she started riding, she did her own wrenching and worked at a dealership in the parts department. Her love of motorcycling opened my doors for her and she eventually started the second chapter of Women in the Wind. Soon after, she and Chris Sommer (who later married Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers) started Harley Women, a magazine devoted to the woman rider. Jo has been inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Sturgis, as well as the National Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Iowa and the AMA Hall of Fame in Ohio. She was one of five women featured in the documentary, She Lives to Ride, and she will be featured in a special exhibit, Paving the WayThe Women of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, at the Buffalo Chip Campground, Sturgis, South Dakota, at this year’s Sturgis Rally. Bob Sumption works out of our Bloomington, Illinois office as an investigator and has been riding motorcycles most of his adult life. He is the former president of an A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois chapter in central Illinois and attends many of the bike events in his state. I don’t know of any firm that has a dedicated staff as qualified and experienced as this group of bikers. It’s a real privilege to be associated with this much talent. Not only does Hupy and Abraham, S.C. have these great employees in the motorcycle division, there are dozens of paralegals, legal secretaries, account staff and clerks to assist all of our clients in the professional style we are known for. Besides the exceptional people I get to work with each day, I marvel at the generosity of this firm. The motorcycle faction is only one part of a complex and diverse client base we serve. Speaking for the motorcycle community part, I’ve seen literally millions of dollars donated to motorcycle organizations and causes and public awareness messages like our famous “Watch For Motorcycles” bumper sticker and billboard campaign. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. is an amazing place to work and serves the motorcycle community better than anything else I’ve seen and I’ve been around a long time. Peace, and ride safe.

Shop Talk:

Running Rough?

by Jim Jones Custom Services Motorcycles CREEPERSCUSTOMS.COM

If you haven’t noticed lately the gas you’re putting in your bike may smell and look a little different than it used to. Well if it looks weird and smells weird it probably is. We have been seeing more and more problems with the fuel systems in the bikes coming into the shop. With the way they’re making fuel these days with this “ethanol garbage” E85 and the low octane crap the fuel companies have been passing off on us, it’s amazing our bikes even run anymore. If you don’t believe me take a cup of this so called gas and pour it in a drain pan and give it a few hours in the air. The gas turns into what looks like a karo syrup look alike and if it does that in the air, (it just makes sense) what it’s going to do in a month or two in your gas tank? Lately we’ve been having more and more problems with the carb floats sticking and gas pouring out of the overflow and the jets are getting gummed up and causing performance issues. When we take the carb apart it actually looks like mold growing inside the carb and sometimes we actually have to pull the float needle out at its seat with a small pair of pliers. The other place you have to think of on non-fuel injected bikes is the petcock. Newer models have a vacuum assisted petcock on them (for the lazy riders that find it too hard to shut the gas off) poor quality gas will eat away at the insides of the petcock and cause the flow to be reduced, creating more running and performance issues. The petcock screen inside the tank can also be an issue as well, other than the obvious solution of just riding your bike more and run the gas out of it; we’ve found that a cap of sea foam in every tank of fuel seems to help. But the best way we’ve found to help the issue is to get a couple gallons of racing fuel and keep it around in a can. When you go to fuel up your bike, before you leave just put a half gallon or so in the tank then top it off at the gas station. This will boost your octane and give your engine a little more performance as well as helping with this garbage fuel problems (also it will drive these EPA environmental whack-jobs out of their mind) LOL! Remember if your bike ran good the last time you rode and the next time you take it out it runs bad, it’s most likely not going to be a jetting or tuning issue. Many people come in and ask to have their bike tuned or jetted because of a running issue that has just popped up out of nowhere. Well, it’s probably just a dirty carb or an issue brought on by crappy fuel or another dirty fuel system part. The other day a customer came in and said his bike was running lean and popping thru the carb spitting back. These are all lean condition issues, but that doesn’t mean that you need to rejet or adjust your carb. But something is wrong and causing the problem. Another customer came in and said he thought his problem was an air leak so he bought some intake gaskets and seals and went home to change them. A couple hours later he called back and said that didn’t work and came in and bought new intake flanges 16

thinking they were warped. The next day he called back said that didn’t work either and wanted to have me look at it. I took the carb off and remove the float bowl and as he said he cleaned the carb and jets, I started looking at the intake and he had installed the seals correctly. Looking a little deeper I noticed it had a vacuum petcock so I check the vacuum line from the carb to the petcock for leaks, again no problem. So I popped off the fuel line and checked the gas flow, which was good, but then I noticed that the fuel was running out of the fuel line but I didn’t have the vacuum pump hooked to the petcocks vacuum line. I thought how can that be? The fuel supply shuts off when the vacuum isn’t present. Then I realized the problem. The petcocks vacuum diaphragm had a leak, which was causing his vacuum leak and his lean condition, I replaced his petcock (with a non-vacuum model) and plugged off the vacuum port at the carburetor and the bike ran perfect. Most of the time when the vacuum diaphragm quits working the fuel supply almost every time gets shut off. This just proves my point about fuel issues, you don’t solve performance and running issues on a bike that has always ran good by tuning or rejetting. Remember next time your bike starts running bad look at everything with today’s crappy gas it’s almost always the issue. Other than that, Ride Your Bike, it’s the best way to keep fresh gas in your tank....

Paint Feature: The Evolution of Flames By Steve Wright Custom Painted Vehicles www.cpvehicles.com

One of the coolest things about going to the Harley-Davidson Museum is seeing how the styling evolved every year, and a big part of the styling was the paint job. The changes are so incremental that I think it would be very entertaining to see an animation of the first Harley motorbike morphing into the latest 2012 model. Over the years the stylists at HD have been very conservative for the most part, which leaves the door wide open for the average enthusiast to create his or her own look. In the past, one of the most popular design choices has been the classic flame paint job. No one knows who was the first, but odds are it was just some guy messing around in the back yard on his buddy’s car. One theory has it that they were trying to hide flaws in the paint with out having to paint the entire vehicle. Whatever the story, flames were soon the most popular look on the hot rod scene. It didn’t take long for the motorcycle crowd to follow. Over the years we’ve scene many trends in custom paint from flames to candy apple colors, large metal flakes, pin stripping, scallops, and even fully airbrushed rides with fantastic surrealistic scenes. Recently, we’ve seen a variety of new paint techniques that add cool textures to an expanding palette of choices that a custom painter has to choose from. There are marbleizing techniques, burnished metal or grinds as some people refer to them, splatters, water spotting, and cob webbing just to name a few. One of the most popular new techniques we’ve seen in a long time is the “true fire” look developed by Mike Lavallee. This trend started in the early 2000’s and swept the country. When done correctly, it imitates the look of fire so accurately that it’s hard to take your eyes off of it. So far it shows no sign of slowing down as everyone puts their own twist on it. So what do you think the next trend will be in custom paint? I’ll give you a hint: where there’s fire there’s…that’s right, smoke, and it’s really nothing new. In the 1950’s painters would take an acetylene torch and turn off the oxygen to produce a smoky flame, which, when brushed quickly across a painted surface, left convincing smoke trails. It seems like no matter what comes along in the custom paint world, there is always someone looking at the old ideas and being inspired to recreate them in a new way. As a painter, I like to see paint that utilizes a variety of techniques instead of just one. For example, when marbleizing came along we saw whole vehicles covered in this amazing texture. The problem is, once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. So next time you are looking for inspiration for that new custom paint job, look for examples in the magazines and on the web that take it to the next level. 22 2012 Summer Volume II - Issue 17 - Midwest Rider Activity Guide - Motorcycle R.A.G.

Health Feature:

Preparing yourself for the ride Acupuncture - What for?

By Michelle Tate and Lisa Tomoleoni Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, www.aommchenry.com

Last issue we wrote about what acupuncture is and a little about how it works. This issue we would like to present a variety of specific health concerns we have addressed for biker friends of ours, and how they were able to experience better health, and, of course, enjoy riding more. We’ve asked them to comment on their experience with this healing system. We treated Jimbo for recovery from his knee surgery. He had torn his meniscus quite severely, and had a fair amount of arthritis in the joint. He began treatments with us the day following his surgery, and healed in half the expected time. About his recovery, Jimbo said, “I had knee surgery in February. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to ride my bike in April so I went to A.O.M. and got acupuncture treatments. It relieved the pain and made my knee feel a lot better, and gave me more mobility. So it really, really helped speed up my recovery. It was wonderful. I’m still going for tune-ups. I highly recommend people try it.” Pain is usually what brings most people to us, but we treat other health conditions as well. A man came to us for shoulder pain. We treated him, and soon after, his wife started treatments for her COPD. Both have experienced an improvement in their quality of life and ability to do the things they want to do. She said, “My husband and I ride a bagger. We have been going to Michelle and Lisa at Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine for treatments off and on for a year or more, my husband for his shoulder and me for COPD. We have experienced significant results performed in a very professional yet comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. For any skeptic out there, as they say, you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain”. These folks continue to visit from time to time to maintain the best health possible, which is common. In fact, some people come to our clinic for no specific complaint, but just to enhance well-being. Acupuncture can treat a wide variety of things. We had one biker friend who came to us for migraine headaches. She had suffered from them for many, many years. Going through a day with a migraine had become the norm for her. Within a few treatments she noticed a big change- the migraines were a lot less frequent and a lot less severe. When asked to comment about her situation, Frogonaharley said, “I have been seeing Michelle since November 2011. First...and ongoing impression of Michelle is her caring nature and always willing to explain and help me understand what she is doing and how acupuncture works. The training that she has gone through is more than impressive and it translates wonderfully into our sessions. I can say that I am getting relief from my migraines, and I’m sleeping better, and feel a bit less stressed. On top of this Michelle has been talking to me about some relaxation techniques to help out with my days. I can honestly say that Michelle is someone who listens and truly cares about her patients and their progress”. For people who are interested but don’t quite know what to expect, or have questions, give us a call and talk to us. We want to help as many people as we can to enjoy their lives better- on the road and otherwise. Enjoy the summer and ride safely! - Michelle and Lisa

ABATE of Illinois:

Kneez in the Breeze By Judy “Chooch” Kaenel, President DuKane Chapter A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Inc.

Many bikers take their freedom to ride as they choose for granted. They take for granted that not only can they choose to ride helmet free in the State of Illinois, but they also take for granted that they may ride the roads free from discrimination and/or persecution just because they are bikers. What frustrates me is that a large number of bikers do not know how many times A.B.A.T.E. has gone to bat for them. They shrug their shoulders, brush us off as political fly that annoys them and motor on without a care in the world. Arrrrggghhh!! What would you do if A.B.A.T.E. was not around to pick up the proverbial balls that get dropped? Recently, A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois was involved in a boycott of a motorcycle parts expo that was located in Tinley Park this past February. A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois decided that since these particular promoters of this event refused to allow entry to anyone wearing colors, we as a State Motorcycle Rights organization would not participate and pulled our booth from the show. Outrage ensued..... And oh boy did it! I and another chapter president were harassed by vendors, strangers and even friends who felt that we were hurting the business owner or we were just plain dumb. Yikes! That hurt – Not!

26

To stand by this boycott was not a difficult decision. I visit many clubs, associations, and organizations and speak to them about A.B.A.T.E. and what we stand for. To talk out the side of my mouth will never be acceptable to me. When I tell these bikers that I and other chapters will stand for them in Springfield and DC, that we will support their rights and yes that includes the right to represent their club by wearing colors then we will never turn our backs in a decision no matter how unpopular it may make us.

The plain truth about A.B.A.T.E. is that we stand by ALL bikers! We fight daily for your rights! Do you know that in the 1970s the NHTSB was on a mission to completely eradicate all bikers from the roads? A.B.A.T.E. lobbied and stopped that discrimination. We have kept state roads open to bikers such as Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, we have made it possible that ATV riders, Off-Road Riders, Snowmobiler’s even Skiers can ride where they want to and enjoy their freedoms and recently our state was able to change wording on IL-SB3452 to drop or rectify language regarding hot dogging on your bike i.e. wheelies and did the Sport Bike community a BIG favor by getting penalties reduced. So we as members of A.B.A.T.E. cringe when we see signs “No Colors Allowed”. Discrimination comes in many forms. Too many times you see this blanket statement regarding colors but when you enter a venue, you will see MCs and Organizations wearing their colors. Huh??? Who are these promoters, business owners, even states trying to keep out? Picking and choosing a biker that meets your sensibilities or safety nets is not what we at A.B.A.T.E. stand for. We support and fight for you – the biker, no names, and no distinguishing attributes just the BIKER. Ride Free – Join A.B.A.T.E.!

Always in sight of Highway 13 is the helpless form of a hanging motorcycle twisting in the wind, its only crime having been being born outside our country’s borders. For the members of the Free Spirit Motorcycle Club, it is a crime punishable by public humiliation and slow, agonizing death. Indeed, the strung-up cycle may find its fate preferable to what the host of other Suzukis, Hondas, Yamahas and Kawasakis have endured at the hands of the local gentry: fire, gunshots, draggings, perhaps even disembowelment. In case you haven’t caught the hint, here Harley-Davidson is king. Only domestics are tolerated. Anything else risks the swift trial of an angry jury and an unforgiving noose. photo credit to www.wisconsinosity.com Saturday, July 28th – DeForest, WI – Rita’s Ride.
