Kelvin Jeter
Kelvin Jeter ran 25 times for a careerhigh 240 yards and three touchdowns, and JMU compiled 572 yards of total offense in its first home playoff victory. Jeter had the then-third-best game rushing effort in team history and scored on a six-yard run during the opening quarter for the game’s first points, on a 30-yard run for a 31-13 JMU lead in the third quarter, and on a 43-yard run with 1:50 remaining for the game’s final points. JMU took a 10-0 lead after less than seven minutes, but Troy State pulled into a 10-10 tie midway through the second quarter before Mike Cawley’s 38-yard scoring pass to Macey Brooks put JMU in front to stay with 5:01 left in the half. Cawley hit Ed Perry on a 14-yard touchdown pass, and Jeter had his 30-yard scoring run to raise the Dukes’ edge to 31-13 during the third
quarter. JMU compiled 572 yards of total offense (331 rushing, 241 passing). Cawley hit on 16 of 32 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, and Brooks, Jay Jones and Perry each had four receptions for the Dukes. Troy State 7 3 3 13 – 26 JMU 10 7 14 14 – 45
Marshall 28, JMU 21 (ot)
Damon Scott’s third rushing touchdown, a three-yarder with 8:08 to play, put Appalachian State in front to stay. The Mountaineers drove 67 yards in six plays for the winning score after Mike Cawley’s 82-yard touchdown pass to Jay Jones pulled JMU into a 24-24 tie with 11:09 to play. JMU had three possessions after Scott’s decisive touchdown but got only one first down before completing a 60-yard pass to the Appalachian State 20 as time expired. The Mountaineers rushed for 341 yards and ran 81 plays while holding the ball for 39:02 of the game’s 60 minutes. JMU ran only 47 plays but got a 300-yard passing effort from Cawley, who threw for three scores. Mike Cawley Appalachian State finished with 436 yards and JMU with 384. Cawley hit Ed Perry with a 31-yard scoring pass to give JMU a 7-3 first-quarter lead and Mike Woolever with a 17-yarder to pull the Dukes into a 17-17 tie just before halftime. Dec. 3, 1994 ~ Huntington, W.Va. Chris Parker’s two-yard touchdown run on the fifth play of overtime gave Marshall the win after JMU overcame deficits of 14-0 and 21-7. Parker carried five straight times during the Herd’s overtime series and finished with 153 yards, 110 during the first half. JMU gained seven yards during its overtime possession, and the game ended on a fourth-down incompletion by the Dukes. Marshall gained 291 yards during the first half and led 14-0 at halftime, but JMU had 272 yards during the second half and forced overtime on Mike Cawley’s two-yard touchdown run with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter. Cawley had hit Jay Jones on a 40yard scoring pass to pull the Dukes to within 21-14 with 11:59 left after Marshall’s Melvin Cunningham reEd Perry turned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown early during the final period. JMU ran 50 plays to Marshall’s 14 during the third and fourth quarters and had but one turnover while the Herd lost four fumbles and threw an interception. Troy State scored three touchdowns during a seven-minute period midway through the game in the first-round playoff win. JMU trailed only 3-0 until Troy State got its first touchdown -- immediately following a 49-yard pass completion to the JMU one-yard line -- with 1:43 left in the first half. The Trojans drove 75 yards for a touchdown on the first series of the second half and scored again with 8:57 left in the third quarter after returning an interception to the Dukes’ one. Troy State scored twice on one-yard runs by 290-pound defensive tackle All-America Al Lucas and got another touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone after driving 75 yards. JMU’s points came on Curtis Keaton’s 20th touchdown run of the season, a two-yard carry with 9:22 left in the game. Troy State gained 376 yards to JMU’s 203. The Trojans held Keaton, a 1,719-yard rusher for the year, to 40 yards, and injuries Curtis Keaton forced JMU to use three quarterbacks. Starter Chris Paquette left in the second quarter with a collarbone problem, and Mike Connelly, who missed the previous game with a shoulder problem, played only briefly. Jason Thompson was used at quarterback for the first time as a college player and worked the entire second half. He completed six of 16 passes for 66 yards.
