A LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

We are excited here in JMU Athletics! This past year brought continued improvement in academic achievements by our student-athletes in addition to significant athletic victories when several teams won CAA Championship titles and moved on to post-season play. The opportunities for our coaches and student-athletes to excel are directly attributable to your generous support of JMU Athletics by allowing us to provide the best resources to compete at the highest levels in the classroom and on the field. In collaboration with the University’s planning process, we finalized and released our athletic strategic plan “Engaged in Excellence” earlier this year. This comprehensive document outlines our mission, vision and guiding principles, along with a detailed blueprint to help shape and guide the future success of our program, while defining important aspects of engagement with internal and external constituents of the University. It continues to be our goal to provide each student-athlete with a unique blueprint for success. Many of our student-athletes will graduate and become tomorrow’s leaders outside the venue of professional sports. We strive to provide each student-athlete with an optimal experience to complete their education, develop and contribute to their maximum ability through athletic competition and grow socially through their experiences on campus and civic engagement. I want you to know how much we appreciate your support and passion for the athletics program at JMU and I ask that you will continue that dedication to our student-athletes with your future gifts. If you are not one of the over 4,000 current Duke Club members, hopefully this book will help demonstrate how special our student-athletes are and the support they need. Every donation matters and we deeply appreciate your assistance in making a difference! Go Dukes!

ENGAGED IN EXCELLENCE

JMU Athletics Strategic Plan

A notable piece of the strategic plan is the Sustainable Athletics Generated Revenue section – where the Duke Club is prominently positioned. The section states – “the capacity to grow sustainable athletics generated revenues greatly effects the strength of JMU’s position within a rapidly evolving stratification of Division I members. Concurrently, it is essential to maintain appropriate levels of institutional support for Athletics. JMU’s tradition of excellence includes significant investment in providing athletics’ staff and student-athletes with the resources to be successful in Division I.” The Duke Club’s goal within that section is to “strategically grow resources to offset scholarship costs and essential operating budgets.” The strategies to achieve that goal are as follows:

• Enhance comprehensive strategic fundraising and engagement plan based on goals established

by the JMU Foundation, University and Athletic Department.

• Develop and implement a Leadership Giving Society of five-figure donors.

• Align Athletics Capital Campaign priorities with University/Athletics Facilities Master Plan.

• Develop and implement a plan to raise $12M in private contributions toward JMU Convocation Center.

• Create a planned giving society to enhance the athletic endowment; align with University

planned giving programs and goals.

PG 7

IMPACT OF GIVING Student-Athlete Scholarship Support

Scholarships are the most critical piece of a successful athletics program. Scholarships are not complimentary admissions to the University, but are in fact paid expenditures of the Athletics Department. Last year JMU allocated more than $7.1M in scholarship support.

General Operating Budget This budget is used to fund significant needs such as recruiting, equipment, and travel. Funding these areas is critical to the success of our teams and our ability to attract first class student-athletes and coaches.

University Recognition Athletics truly is the front porch to a university. By competing at the highest levels regionally and nationally, JMU Athletics connects the University with prospective students, potential employers, potential donors and the community.

Personal Benefits Duke Club donors are valued supporters of the University. We reward the generosity of our members by providing them our very best seating, parking and hospitality among other opportunities. You may also receive tax benefits for your gift.

MAJOR GIFTS

Along with your annual Duke Club gift, there are additional ways you can make a significant impact on the present and the future of JMU Athletics. Private support is a difference maker in our quest for comprehensive excellence in the classroom and in competition. Please consider how these vehicles may be beneficial to your financial plan as they will help shape JMU Athletics for years to come.

Capital Gifts: History has proven with new and enhanced facilities like University Park, Veterans Memorial Stadium and Bridgeforth Stadium that private support is critical in providing JMU student-athletes with first class training and competition facilities. Our current need is for the JMU Convocation Center, which will house our men’s and women’s basketball teams and be a central civic asset for the Shenandoah Valley. These facilities are vital to our mission of ensuring an exemplary student-athlete experience. Opportunities exist to recognize donors at these facilities and will outwardly display to others your commitment to and support of the athletic facilities at JMU.

2015 DUKE CLUB BROCHURE // PG 16

Endowment Opportunities: Endowment gifts are an investment in the future of JMU Athletics. Gifts and commitments may be made and satisfied over time and designated to your choice of student-athlete scholarships, a specific team or program or to the General Athletics Endowment. These gifts are uniquely designed to defray our annual budgetary needs and provide financial support to JMU Athletics in perpetuity.

Legacy Gifts: The ultimate gift signifying a deep-rooted passion for JMU Athletics can be made through a legacy gift. These gifts can be made several different ways, including through an estate plan. A Duke Club staff representative will work with your personal advisors on a legacy gift plan that is most advantageous for your personal financial situation while identifying how to leave your personal legacy with JMU Athletics.

Duke Dog Plaza: Your opportunity to show your love for Duke Dog exists by purchasing a brick or paver to be placed around the Duke Dog Statue in front of the Plecker Center. Bricks (4”x8”) or pavers (8”x8”) are available for purchase through the Duke Club. Each engraved piece is a permanent display of your support for JMU Athletics.

FOOTBALL RESEATING

Duke Club priority reseating is a process that allows active Duke Club members to upgrade their season ticket locations through the Duke Club Priority Point & Rank System. Priority points are calculated based on a donor’s support of JMU Athletics and factor in one’s annual and lifetime giving, season ticket purchases and consecutive years as a donor. Priority points are used to determine your overall rank within the Duke Club. A donor’s rank will dictate the reseating assignment time. JMU Athletics reseats Bridgeforth Stadium every four years in order of Duke Club rank. After the May 15 priority deadline, all Duke Club members who have ordered football season tickets will be ranked in order of their Duke Club priority points. Seat selection appointments will be scheduled in rank order. Duke Club members will be notified of their selection time by email after the May 15 deadline and selections will be facilitated using an online interface. The online interface will allow donors to become comfortable with seating options and review available seats before their appointment and once it is their selection time, pick their seat location for the next four years. In the event a donor cannot perform their online seat selection, JMU Athletics will select seats based on seating preferences, previous location, and the best available locations. PG 19

FOOTBALL PARKING

Football season ticket holders receive a parking pass with their ticket package. Parking lot locations are determined by Duke Club giving level and availability. Prior to every football season, parking locations are selected based on donor level and in order of Duke Club priority points. Donors who wish to forego the annual parking selection process can participate in the exemption process. The exemption allows for a donor to maintain their current parking space by giving at a donor level above that required for their lot. The parking exemption only allows a donor to maintain their current spot, and is not applicable to any requests to move. To verify the exemption donor level, please reference the benefit chart on page 14.
