QUICK LOOK/TRADITIONS A Quick Look At JMU Location: Harrisonburg, Va. 22807 Enrollment: 19,800 Founded: 1908 (as State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg; became the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg in 1914, the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg in 1924, Madison College in 1938 and James Madison University in 1977). The university is named for James Madison, the fourth president of the United States and primary author of the U.S. Constitution. Affiliation: State university of the Commonwealth of Virginia Academic Divisions: College of Arts and Letters, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Behavioral Studies, College of Integrated Science and Engineering, College of Science and Mathematics, College of Visual and Performing Arts, The Graduate School, General Education Degree Programs: 109 (69 undergraduate, 31 master’s, 2 educational specialist, 7 doctoral) Full-time Employees: 2,615 (1,377 faculty and administrators; 1,238 staff) Campus: 112 major buildings on 721 acres Athletic Affiliations: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Athletic Programs: 18 varsity sports (6 for men, 12 for women) Nickname: Dukes (in honor of Dr. Samuel P. Nicknames, Traditions JMU’s athletic teams use the nickname “Dukes” in honor of Dr. Samuel P. Duke, university president from 1919-1949. Men’s athletics began at JMU during Duke’s tenure (men first enrolled in the regular season in 1946 as day students.) Women’s teams were known by several names until “Duchesses” became prevalent in the early 1940s. That name was dropped in 1982 when all of JMU’s teams became “Dukes.” The school colors, purple and gold, were selected during JMU’s first session in 1909-10 from the colors used by the institution’s two literary societies, Lanier and Lee. The Lanier Society’s colors were violet and white and the Lee’s gray and gold. Violet soon was replaced by purple, which was easier to obtain for use for pennants and other decorations. The school mascot, a bulldog with a purple and gold cape and a crown, was adopted in 1971. The bulldog is the traditional pet of royalty such as a duke. “Duke Dog” entertains at JMU athletic contests and other university special events and also takes part in a variety of community activities and events. JMU also has used several living bulldogs as university mascots. Duke Dog won the “popular” vote during the 2004 Capital One Mascot of the Year competition, compiling an 11-0 record in head-to-head voting against other college mascots.

RICH LEEPER Senior – 5-8 – 3 Letters Chapel Hill, N.C. – Carrboro Career Highlights • Career lows of 70 (single round), 148 (36 holes) and 220 (54 holes) • Had two career top-10 and four top-20 finishes 2011-12 (junior) • Played 13 rounds and averaged 75.85 strokes per round • Had one top-10 finish, tying ninth at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate with a career-best 4-over 148 while helping Madison win the team title • Shot three rounds of par or better, with the top score a 2-under 70 in the first round of the VCU Shootout 2010-11 (sophomore) • Averaged 75.6 strokes per round in 10 events and 28 rounds played • Garnered his second college letter • Had two rounds of par or better, including a season-low 70 in the last round at Barefoot at the Beach • Had two top-20 finishes on the season, with his top finish a tie for 10th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate • Had his season best tournament score at Barefoot at the Beach, shooting a 4-over 220 2009-10 (freshman) • Competed in four events during his inaugural season • Earned his first collegiate letter • Averaged 76.4 strokes in nine rounds played • Posted two rounds of par or better • Had one top-20 finish • Made JMU debut by competing as an individual at the Frank Landry Invitational, including a 1-under 71 in the second round • Shot a season-low 1-under 70 at the Buck Leslie Challenge • Tied for 19th at the CAA Championships High School • Four-time All-Conference selection and team MVP • Finished sixth in state tournament as a senior • Finished third at regional tournament as a junior and first as a senior • Finished second in Midstate Conference Tournament as a senior • Was also a two-time All-Conference selection in lacrosse • Member of the National Technical Honors Society Personal • Son of Brenda and Mike Leeper • Majoring in kinesiology

• Sixth season as head coach of the men’s golf program. • 2008-09 CAA co-Coach of the Year. • Previously coached the JMU women’s golf team from 1996-99. • During his tenure, the women’s team had three top-five finishes at the ECAC Tournament. • Former four-year golfer at JMU and member of the 1991 NCAA Tournament team. • Two-time winner of the Heath Award. • Played golf at the professional level on five tours. • Won one event, had five top-five finishes and 12 top-10 performances during his professional tenure. • Helped design and develop Packsaddle Ridge Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Va. which was recognized in 2003 by Golf Digest as the fifth-best new golf course in the nation. • Earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from JMU.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Jeff Bourne Athletics Director Jeff Bourne is in his second decade as JMU’s athletics director, having already overseen a period of dramatic enhancements on behalf of all of the university’s student-athletes and coaches. At JMU, Bourne leads a program that is competitive within the Colonial Athletic Association as well as at regional and national levels and that has positioned itself to continue to play a major role in intercollegiate athletics. Bourne has overseen processes to ensure the academic, athletic and social success of all JMU student-athletes. In 2008-09, JMU celebrated an 80 percent graduation rate among its student-athletes, compared with JMU’s general student population rate of 81 percent. When Bourne arrived at JMU, the graduation rate among studentathletes was 71 percent and the overall student rate 79 percent. Annual fundraising has improved dramatically under Bourne’s leadership, with an overall increase of more than 400 percent during the past eight years. Student-athlete support services and facility improvements also have been highlights of the past 10 years. JMU enjoys a tremendous academic reputation nationally as evidenced by its continued placement among national and regional publications. For the 16th consecutive year the university ranked as the top public, master’s-level university in the South in the highly regarded annual poll on academic quality conducted by U.S. News & World Report for its guidebook, 2010 America’s Best Colleges. During Bourne’s tenure more than 1,000 conference academic honors have been given to JMU student-athletes, including CAA scholar-athletes, CAA commissioner’s academic award winners and ECAC scholar-athletes of the year. JMU also has had four student-athletes receive NCAA post-graduate scholarships. Perhaps the best measure of success is the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate. JMU has ranked well above the NCAA minimum standard for each of the program’s rating periods, and no JMU teams have been subject to APR-related penalties. Seven of JMU’s 18 teams had APR scores ranking in at least the 90th percentile of their respective sports in the most-recent APR release, the greatest number reaching that mark among any of the 12 CAA institutions. Providing outstanding athletics facilities is a primary focus, and JMU will continue to make significant progress in this front during the coming year. In 2009-10, the new Veterans Memorial Stadium complex for baseball and softball was completed; work was recently completed in summer of 2011 on the first phase of the new University Park, including practice and competition facilities for soccer, lacrosse, track and field and cross country with field hockey to follow in the near future; and the $62 Million, 20-month process to renovate Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field finished prior to the 2011 season. The football stadium expansion project increased seating at the facility to nearly 25,000 and featured major enhancements, including private suites and club level seating, improved concessions and restroom facilities, improved lighting, and a new media facility. Under Bourne, JMU has developed an enhanced volunteer fundraising network and a point-priority

system to recognize donor participation and has implemented programs to increase game attendance and address the needs of athletics infrastructure. These efforts have resulted in unprecedented levels of success in fundraising while driving football attendance to all-time records. Major program enhancements in student-athlete services and academic advising, sports medicine and strength and conditioning have added to the overall quality of the student-athlete experience as demonstrated in annual senior exit interviews and peer program evaluations. Annual evaluation and information data also is incorporated into a strategic planning and reporting process to enhance the organizational structure of the athletics division with the primary focus on meeting the needs of student-athletes and coaches. “We’re very proud of the accomplishments we’ve had and I am quite fortunate to work with and serve a tremendous group of coaches and a talented support team. We will continue to work together toward the common goals of ensuring the success of our student-athletes in all of their endeavors -academically, athletically and socially,” Bourne said. “Our goals are to win conference championships and to advance our teams to post-season play while adhering to NCAA and conference guidelines and to graduate our student-athletes. “We continue to strengthen the infrastructure and facilities of the athletics program,” he said. “Our support centers and athletics personnel are dedicated to providing student-athletes with the best experience possible at the intercollegiate level. We also are extremely pleased with the construction of the Robert and Frances Plecker Athletic Performance Center, which benefits all of our student-athletes with state-of-the-art academic facilities and serves as an entrance and focal point for our football stadium. Other athletics facilities construction that is being planned and implemented on campus -- immediately new baseball and softball stadiums and enhancement of our football facility and later upgrades for other programs -- will provide JMU with outstanding competition sites.” The Plecker Performance Center, which opened in 2005, is the first significant facility project funded primarily through private resources in JMU athletics’ history. The $10 million facility is adjacent to Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field and features support areas for football and areas for entertaining during home football games and for JMU’s athletic hall of fame. Also included is the Challace McMillin Academic Center that benefits performers in all JMU sports programs. Advising and counseling for all of JMU student-athletes take place at the facility, which also includes an outstanding computer lab and strength training and sports medicine facilities. Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field, the home of JMU’s football program, has a large electronic videoboard with live game action and video replay capabilities, an outstanding FieldTurf playing surface and an enhanced sound system added in recent years. Prior to arriving at JMU in 1999, Bourne served in several athletics roles at Virginia Tech from 1986-97 and was senior associate athletics director at Georgia Tech from 1997-99. At Georgia Tech, he supervised finance, marketing and promotions, ticketing, sports information, and radio and television broadcasts and production. He also was liaison to the Alexander-Tharpe fund, the university’s develop-

ment arm, and administered baseball and golf. At Virginia Tech, he was associate athletics director during his final two years, and he co-chaired a committee that reviewed gender equity at the school. The committee developed and implemented a plan that brought the school into compliance with federal guidelines and ranked it fifth nationally in compliance. A Salem, Va., native, Bourne was Virginia Tech’s athletics business manager and then associate athletics director for administration and finance. Bourne received his Bridgewater College degree in business administration and accounting in 1981 and completed his master’s degree in education and sports management at Virginia Tech in 1994. He worked for four years in public accounting and received his certification in public accountancy before moving to Virginia Tech, where he first was an internal auditor and a consultant to the athletic business office. He is a 1994 graduate of the Sports Management Institute Executive Program from the University of North Carolina and the University of Southern California. The Bourne family bleeds purple and gold. Bourne’s wife, the former Mary Lou Garber, is a Harrisonburg native and Bridgewater graduate. She serves as the Director of Technology Transfer at James Madison. Their two sons are JMU students Jason (23) a senior and Kyle (20) a junior.

1908 – On March 14, Virginia Governor Claude A. Swanson signed the General Assembly bill creating the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. Julian Ashby Burruss was named first president of the new school. 1909 – The school opened with an enrollment of 150 and a faculty of 15 on a campus of about 50 acres. 1910 – The school operated its first summer session -- the first held in Virginia. Male and female students attended. 1911 – The first 20 graduates received diplomas. 1914 – The school’s name was shortened to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg. 1916 – Authorization was received for the school to award bachelor’s degrees. Previously, only diplomas for post-high school work had been awarded. 1919 – Dr. Samuel Page Duke became the institution’s second president. 1924 – The institution was renamed the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg. 1938 – The institution was renamed Madison College in honor of President James Madison. Enrollment passed 1,000. 1946 – Men were first enrolled during the regular session but only as day students. 1949 – Dr. G. Tyler Miller became the institution’s third president. 1954 – The college was authorized to award master’s degrees. 1964 – Enrollment passed 2,000. 1966 – The General Assembly approved full coeducational status for the college, and men were enrolled as resident students for the first time. 1971 – Dr. Ronald E. Carrier became the institution’s fourth president. 1972 – Enrollment passed 5,000.

1977 – The institution was renamed James Madison University. 1983 – JMU celebrated its 75th anniversary. 1987 – Enrollment passed 10,000. 1995 – JMU began its first doctoral program. 1998 – Dr. Linwood H. Her extensive business background includes experience with university technology commercialization and start-up companies. The Algers have a thirteen-year-old daughter named Eleanor (who was born in Virginia, where the Algers lived when they were first married), whose passions include reading, writing, and music theater. Mr. Alger has sung with acclaimed choral groups that have toured internationally, made professional recordings, and performed on national television. His other interests include travel, history, tennis, hiking, and coin collecting. All three family members are avid college sports fans. The family is heavily involved in fundraising for charitable organizations and is also active in the community through school activities, church leadership, and local theater.

Vice Presidents

President Jonathan R. Alger was selected as James Madison University’s sixth president on Nov. 28, 2011. Prior to his arrival at JMU, Mr. Alger served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Mr. Alger was a member of the President’s leadership team, managed all legal affairs, oversaw University-wide compliance efforts, and taught courses for first-year and upperclass students. He provided strategic leadership for a wide range of administrative and academic issues, advised the University’s governing boards and committees, and interacted with government officials at the federal, state, and local levels. Working with colleagues across all areas of the University, he played a critical role on major initiatives involving (among many issues) diversity, governance, biomedical education, administrative restructuring, athletics, compliance, ethics, campus safety, and enrollment management. Mr. Alger has previously served as Assistant General Counsel at the University of Michigan, counsel for the American Association of University Professors, attorney-advisor in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, and as an associate in the Labor and Employment Section of the international law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. At the University of Michigan, Mr. Alger played a key leadership role in the University’s efforts in two landmark Supreme Court cases on diversity and admissions and coordinated the largest amicus brief coalition in Supreme Court history. He has since advised universities nationwide on how to build and sustain diversity initiatives and programs. At the American Association of University Professors, Mr. Alger worked with faculty from around the country in developing and advising institutions nationally on policies, procedures, and cases on issues such as academic freedom, shared governance, tenure, due process, and discrimination. At the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, he was the point person on the development and implementation of national policies involving race-targeted financial aid, racial harassment and free expression. He began his career by representing major Fortune 500 companies at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. Mr. Alger is a nationally recognized scholar and speaker on higher education policy and law and has given hundreds of presentations across the U.S. and abroad on a wide range of topics such as access and opportunity, diversity, student and faculty recruitment and retention, management of financial challenges, student organizations, shared governance, intellectual property, and academic freedom. He has published numerous articles and has done significant editorial work for scholarly journals. At Rutgers and Michigan, he has taught courses, seminars, and independent studies in law and higher education, and served as a mentor and advisor to many students. He currently teaches an honors course on higher education law for liberal arts undergraduates, as well as a seminar on diversity issues for first-year students. He has also taught interdisciplinary courses for graduate students in law, education, public policy, and information. Mr. Alger has been recognized as a leader by his peers nationally in many contexts. He is currently President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He sits on the American Bar Association’s Accreditation
