A Message from the Coach Welcome to JMU softball. As the Dukes first and only softball coach in our ten-year history, I am proud that JMU softball is recognized as one of the top programs in the conference and in our region. The Dukes won the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Championship and we continue to aspire to greater heights. I encourage you to consider JMU as an up-and-coming program on the national level. We look to contend for a conference title and advance to the NCAA Tournament every year. Facilities are a big indication of the university’s overall dedication to a program’s success and we are very fortunate here at JMU. In 2010 we opened Veterans Memorial Park - a $9.5 million state-of-the-art baseball and softball facility. Game day attendance averaged over 500 fans per game! The lighted complex has an extraordinary press box, pro-style dugouts with restrooms, six pitching bullpens, two batting cages, a hitting practice area, ticket office, concessions, JMU merchandise sales and separate bathrooms for baseball and softball fans. A complete indoor facility is adjacent to the stadium inside Memorial Hall. We have new coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a softball team room, strength and conditioning areas, indoor practice cages, athletic training room and a study hall area. All of the support areas for our student athletes are in one building. James Madison University provides the opportunity to get a first-rate education and to play Division I athletics. Our players get to challenge themselves in the classroom and on the ball field against the nation’s best. They have a wonderful experience as students, as athletes and socially as an ‘every day’ college kid. JMU’s Softball game day atmosphere is amazing for fans and for our players. I encourage you to read through our guide and learn more about JMU and the Dukes softball program. People continue to be amazed at the beauty of our campus here in the Shenandoah Valley. Katie Flynn Head Coach
• 11th year at JMU and 18th total year as a head coach • Only softball coach in JMU history • Advanced JMU to two CAA Championship games and five semifinals • Led team to 2009 CAA Championship • Two-time CAA Coach of the Year (2004, 2007) • 10-year JMU record is 283-252 • 16-year career record is 443-426 • Honored in 2010 at the Easton Victory Club Luncheon for reaching the 400-win plateau • Twice coached the CAA Player of the Year (Jenn Chavez 2007, Ashley Burnham 2010) • Coached the 2009 VaSID Virginia Pitcher of the Year (Meredith Felts) • Went 60-87 in four seasons as the head coach of Colgate (1994-97) • Went 100-87 in three seasons as the head coach of UNC Greensboro (1998-2000) • Served as an assistant coach at Ohio State and Stetson before taking the head coaching job at Colgate • Received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate in 1990 and a Master’s degree from Ohio State in 1993 • Four-time letter winner at Colgate as a catcher • Helped lead Colgate to a then team-record 24 victories in 1990 • Served as a member of the NCAA Northeast Regional Softball Advisory Committee • Is a standing member of the JMU Committee on Gender Equity • Was a member of the 10-member NCAA National Softball Committee from 2006-2010.

Kristy Norton Associate Head Coach
• Eighth year at JMU • Promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2007 • Serves as the team’s hitting coach as well as third base coach • Defensively, works with the team’s infielders • Prior to JMU was a two-year assistant coach at UNC Greensboro • In 2007, she helped the Dukes set team records in batting average (.311), slugging percentage (.472), runs scored (278), home runs (42) and RBIs (264) • 2007 team finished 14th nationally in batting average, 24th in slugging percentage and 36th in runs scored • Helped Jenn Chavez (2007) and Ashley Burnham (2010) receive CAA Player of the Year honors • All-Southern Conference and honorable mention All-South Region second baseman while playing for Katie Flynn at UNC-Greensboro • All-time UNC-Greensboro leader in games started (252) and at bats (785) and second in hits (222) and doubles (41) • Received a bachelor’s degree from UNC Greensboro in Sport Science with a minor in coaching • Received her master’s degree from JMU in sports administration

Kristin Erb Assistant Coach
• First year at JMU • Serves as the team’s pitching coach as well as first base coach • Joined the JMU staff on August 15, 2011 • Comes to JMU after one season as an assistant coach at Austin Peay where she served as the team’s pitching coach • While at Austin Peay, she oversaw all aspects of the pitching staff, including developing in season and off season pitching workouts, charting the pitching staff for evaluation, and working with the catchers on game-calling strategies • Prior to Austin Peay, she spent a season as an assistant coach for Lock Haven University where she worked with the team’s pitchers and catchers and also served as the first base coach • Was a four-year letterwinner at Lock Haven • Went 168-18 with a 0.39 ERA while recording 1,388 strikeouts and 100 shutouts for the Eagles • Ranks first in Division II history in victories, single-season wins (50), shutouts, games started (171), innings pitched (1,240), and consecutive scoreless innings pitched (86 1/3) • In addition, she tossed seven career perfect games and 13 no-hitters • Four-time NFCA All-American • Two-time winner of the Honda Award for National Player of the Year and a three-time Daktronics Pitcher of the Year • Pitched for two seasons in the National Pro Fastpitch League, spending one year each with the Philadelphia Force and the Tennessee Diamonds.

Catcher Julia Dominguez hit a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning against Tennessee in the Dukes’ first-ever NCAA regional game.
JMU played in the Knoxville Regional in its first appearance in the NCAA Softball Tournament.

Harrisonburg is convenient to the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., and Richmond while providing JMU students the comforts of the picturesque setting of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The city offers something for everyone. From downtown shopping and restaurants, to nearby national parks and forests, it provides JMU students the opportunity to sample many aspects of life. Harrisonburg offers a learning environment that is very unique in today’s high-tech, educational world.

Veterans memorial park - In the spring 2010, JMU opened Veterans Memorial Park, a $9.5 million baseball and softball complex located next to Memorial Hall. - The project included a $1 million interior renovation to Memorial Hall that covered new offices for coaches, locker rooms, team rooms, areas for strength and conditioning, as well as sports medicine, indoor practice space and batting cages. - The softball stadium includes lights, a press box, sunken dugouts, chair-back seating, and a state-of-the-art sound system. - The new facility was built on the same site as the old Veterans Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1949. The new site retained the name Veterans Memorial in honor of all the veterans of foreign wars from Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. - The entrance includes a monument to war veterans. The monument was dedicated on Veterans Day weekend in the Fall of 2009. - First softball game was played on March 17, 2010. It was a doubleheader that included a come-frombehind win by the Dukes over Longwood.
