EDITOR'S NOTE

Lillie Morales Ever since I was a little girl, I loved dressing up for Halloween. My mom would ask us what we wanted to go as and then she would make the costumes herself. Strangely, the tradition has passed on because now that I think of it, I have made quite a few costumes for my own daughter. I think may favorite part about the creepy holiday is that you get to be something else for a day- it's almost like an escape into some sort of fantasy, I love the crazy make up, fun costumes and the candy is great, too. This is the second year we are putting out a mini magazine to celebrate Halloween and there's some pretty cool stuff in this issue. I worked with a few very creative make up artists and we had a blast shooting monsters and mythical creatures. It's a small issue but if you like Halloween, you'll like this one, I'm sure of it. Until next time, Lillie

Q&A with Effects Make Up Artist : Nelson Vilela JF: Tell us about this look and what inspired it. NV: When I was told that we were going to do a Halloween photo shoot, I wanted to go all out so I had this prosthetic with two faces on it and decided that we were going to go with this. At first, we were supposed to do a different look but due to weather complications, we had to get a quick plan b- so I felt that this would be a good option since it was a Halloween shoot I decided not to go to gory but more creepy and I think we nailed it. JF: How long have you been in the make up effects industry? NV: I've been doing make up for about nine years now it started by doing simple make up one Halloween and going to a contest and winning first place was definitely part of it I always liked drawing and creating things on paper. Once I started creating things on people, it became a whole different story. I started doing make up every Halloween after that and people noticed my work and started hiring me. What started as a hobby became a passion -about two years ago is when I really broke out of my shell and started doing a couple of independent films and getting actual jobs on films and videos it took a while but was well worth the wait.

JF: What's your specialty? NV: I can't really label that I specialize in anything in particular because I'm always learning new things- but I do love to create more towards the horror Side of things like zombies and monsters. JF: Is there a favorite look that you've put together throughout your career? NV: Yes, there is one. I created a head to toe zombie for Monster-Mania. The reason why it's one of my favorites is because of the reaction that I got when I walked through the doors. It was like I was a superstar. The feeling of people's admiration and positive feedback is just the greatest feeling. JF: What advice can you give anyone who wants to get into your industry? NV: My advice to anyone trying to get into the industry of make up or special-effects is never give up- it takes time, it's a very difficult industry to get into. Always network and use social media and get out there to events, conventions- promote yourself the best that you possibly can. Like I said, I've been doing make up for nine years and only two years ago is when I really broke out of my shell by meeting directors producers and other make up artists that liked what I do-and never ever stop learning new ways and techniques to make things work better and faster. There will always be ups and downs and missed opportunities but you have to keep on going always have confidence in what you do that's the most important thing.-

Chic Skulls Materials needed: •2 unfinished clay skulls •Black spray paint •decoupage/mod podge •decorative tissue paper •moss •fake black flowers •hot glue gun

1. Paint mod podge onto the surface of the one skull. While doing this, rip some pieces of the tissue paper and lay them over onto the skull and paint another layer of glue on top. Continue doing this all over and press down firmly between the teeth and the details on the face. Let dry. 2. Take your second skull and spray paint the skull black. I used two coats of matte black finish. After letting it dry, start to hot glue moss onto one side of the skull to give the effect of aging. While doing this you can start hot gluing some of the black flowers and putting more moss on top where you have glued the flowers. Let dry. You can style them in your home now. These will last you throughout the fall season, and add some chic Halloween decor into your home! www.jerseyfashionista.com | 22
