9am-4pm $229

Skill level: All

TH1310 The Power of Negative Painting Instructor: Sterling Edwards Medium: Watercolor Skill level: All

9am-12pm $119

You will explore the four basic elements of line, shape, color and texture, and their use in abstract compositions. He will introduce you to his “process” in developing a well composed abstract painting on canvas. Get into the artist head about how the creative process works for you! This class is jammed packed with the essential technical information you need when working with acrylics. It’s time to let your freedom o f expression soar in this all day paint fest. This workshop is for all emerging artists. “Black Bag” exercise supplies provided. *

Sterling will show you a simple exercise that helps you learn how to visualize and construct negative shapes in your paintings. He has been teaching this for over 20 years and considers it the backbone of his style of painting. Most people see the world as a collage of positive shapes. As artists however, we need to find creative ways to incorporate and enhance the negative shapes which are just as important to create a sense of dimension and dramas in our paintings. It doesn’t matter what medium you use, or your level of experience; you’ll find this to be a valuable addition to your list of special techniques. *

TH1308 Drawing the Portrait from Life 9am-4pm

TH1311 Charcoal Spill

Here is your opportunity to learn the primary foundation for all portrait work. Working from a live model, renowned portrait artist Paul McCormack will demonstrate and lecture on the principles and guidelines needed to achieve a likeness. With the inclusion of techniques in pencil and powdered graphite you will learn how to acquire correct proportions and to render features in a realistic fashion. This is a great precursor to Mr. McCormack’s watercolor portrait workshop.*

A sprinkle of charcoal, a bucket of water. Put that shy artist in his box and let out the wild child. This painting begins with random fun...then we settle down and use beautiful fluid acrylics to tame the beast. Come join in the fun...but bring your apron! Supplies: bring your favorite watermedia brushes. Include an old 1" brush to use in medium.

TH1309 The Power of Color

9am-12pm

Instructor: Andrea Harris $119 Medium: Oil Skill level: All Sponsored by: Gamblin Artists’ Colors and Ampersand

Instructor: Dan Nelson Medium: Oil Skill level: All Sponsored by: Jerry’s Artarama

Understanding Color Space will make each artist’s work of mixing color easier and more predictable; no matter the type of painting the artist is creating. The workshop will include an in-depth demonstration and hands-on workshop in an “open studio” atmosphere. David Dunlop

www.judycrane.com Judy is an avid oil painter, plein air painter, and workshop instructor. She has been a full time professional artist for over 20 years. She has studied with many wonderful painters like Kevin McPherson, Camille Przewodek, and Susan Sarback, and several of the Plein Air Painters of America. All of these artist instructors have influenced her work and helped to shape her into the artist and teacher she is today. In her teaching she tries to impart to her students what she has learned from the many instructors that she has studied with over many years. Judy is generous with her knowledge and strives to help each student individually as much as possible. She teaches a plein air style that is quick and yet deliberate. The focus is on shape, value, color and design. Her workshops “loosen up” the “tight” painter, placing emphasis on what is really important in a painting rather than the details. She has a teaching DVD, “Reflections of Nature,” that is available. She has traveled and painted in “plein air” on location in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and many areas of the US. She paints in a manner that lets the viewer see the subject as the eye sees a scene, not in photographic focus, but with atmosphere and depth of field. She captures the sophisticated; lush colors of nature and of our man made environment, and presents them in a believable and exciting way. For the observer her work conveys a feeling of “being there.” Her works are included in many corporate collections, including SAS Institute, Glaxo Smith Klein, Duke University Medical Center, and Progress Energy. Her paintings are also featured in numerous hospitals, hotels and banks as well as many private collections.

Sterling Edwards www.sterlingedwards.com Sterling Edwards began painting at age twelve and has been actively engaged in art most of his life. Predominantly self taught, he has experimented with most mediums and has found that water based mediums such as watercolor and acrylics offer the greatest opportunity to express himself as an artist and offer the most flexibility. Over the last ten years Sterling has developed an expressive and interpretive style of painting that ranges from stylized and impressionistic to total abstraction. He still enjoys painting traditional landscapes however, and finds it a nice balance for his more creative paintings. In 1993 Sterling began teaching his style of painting at workshops throughout North Carolina where he now resides. As his reputation as an accomplished watermedia artist and teacher rapidly grew, he was requested to conduct workshops in neighboring states. Today, Sterling’s workshops are attended by hundreds of people annually throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He was a featured artist in the fall 2001 issue of Watercolor Magic Magazine in an article titled, “Ones to watch” and has been featured in numerous newspaper articles. In 2007 Sterling designed and introduced a signature set of watercolor brushes and a watercolor palette that are marketed internationally. He is a co-founder of the Rusty Nail Painters, an international invitation group of professional artists that meet every two years for an intense week of painting. In 2010 he was awarded signature membership status in the esteemed Transparent Watercolor Society of America. He is the author of the North Light book, “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process”, published by F+W Publishing Company and is a contributing artist in numerous other magazines and books. Tom Lynch www.tomlynch.com Tom Lynch has been referred to as one of the nation’s premier watercolorists. He has written 8 books and hosted several award winning PBS TV Art Series. He was recently listed as one of the nation’s top 20 teachers by American Artist magazine. He is represented by some of the nation’s leading museums and art galleries. He has been the spokesperson for the National Art Materials Trade Association. Tom is currently featured on the new cable TV channel Visual Arts Network, and on the leading internet art education website … Art Academy Live.com. Tom has received 2 Life Time Achievement Awards. His artwork featured on the cover of Artist Magazine. With his uniquely styled landscape paintings, Tom strives for a level of excitement and drama that seems to push somewhere beyond what the environment naturally provides. When considering subjects he tries to search for something striking; like the color of the sky, the direction of natural light, pattern of shadows, or the glint of sunlight on water. He then embellishes those striking features. Lynch hopes that by accentuating those things that are sometimes easy to miss, he can provoke viewers to … “Have something to think about not just things to see”. Each painting he creates can be seen as something very special. “I feel it’s the job of the artist to bring to the viewer the best of what can be found in the landscape along with a little creativity or exaggeration … normal and ordinary are not for me. I feel that an artist is paid for their vision, not their observation.” Tom is a natural teacher who is especially intuitive in developing the student’s own individual needs. For over 35 years students from all over the world have attended his successful workshops and acclaimed them with high regard. He has mentored many who are now accomplished professionals. When Tom speaks, he talks openly, candidly, and with a smile. His paintings have that same intensity, expression, and direct appeal.

Sharing his knowledge on the fine art of portraiture, he has also been on the faculties of the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Somerset Art Association, and the Newark Museum. Displaying equal skill and depth with his works in both oils and watercolors, he has exhibited widely with various establishments; these include the National Arts Club (NYC), the Salmagundi Club (NYC), the American Watercolor Society, the Montclair Arts Museum (NJ), the Noyes Museum (NJ) and the Butler Institute of American Art (OH). Paul resides in the Hudson Valley with his wife and eternal muse Karen, son Daniel, and daughter Abigail Rose. He also shares his home with one slightly deranged yellow lab, an obese black cat, various fish of questionable species, two praying mantids, a vocal alpha-goose, several subordinate ducks, and an overwhelmingly large PEZ dispenser collection.

Trish McKinney

Ken Muenzenmayer

www.trishmckinney.com

www.muenzenmayer.com

Trish McKinney is a national and international award winning artist who loves to tell a story through her paintings. Most recently, she became a Signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, was published as the featured artist/author of an article in Art Journaling Magazine and won The H.K. Holbein Award in the Pikes Peak International Watermedia XVII Exhibition. Trish gives programs, demonstrations, workshops and retreats for all ages - both locally and abroad. She has taught workshops abroad in Italy, Greece, and France. Artist Statement: I am a Teacher - passionate to inspire and connect everyone to the creator within themselves. I am a Painter - constantly curious and experimental, thinking outside the box, and always asking ”what if”. I am a Dreamer - who steps into my dreams and makes them a reality. I am a Believer living my life expectantly and abundantly - thinking ”as if” it has already happened. I am an Artist.

Ken Muenzenmayer works in acrylics on a textured surface, fracturing the painted stroke into minute pieces that creates a visual blending and depth in his paintings. By downplaying the significance of subject matter and simplifying the composition, he creates “the big vision” by layering drybrush and washes which connect all of the component parts of a painting into a single broad harmony. Ken’s paintings can be found in major corporate and private collections throughout the United States. His strong compositions and unique approach to acrylic painting have earned him numerous national and international awards.

David and Eric have continued to provide workshops, presentations, and seminars to teachers, students, and artists throughout the country, and they have coauthored the bestselling book, The Journal Junkies Workshop: Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict, published in 2010 by North Light Books.

Carol Nelson www.carolnelsonfineart.com Carol Nelson is an award winning mixed media artist from Colorado. Her work is characterized by vibrant color, strong brushwork, and abundant textures from a variety of mediums and collage materials added to her work. Carol loves painting realistically in oils, but her main creative outlet comes from working in acrylics and mixed media. Early in her art development, Carol took numerous workshops with master artists, but it is her willingness to experiment with paints and materials that has led to the development of her mixed media techniques.

Dan Nelson If you combine three parts painter, two and a half parts musician, a pound or two of inventor, and a heaping tablespoon of show-off . . . you just might come up with a Dan Nelson, Art Adventurer Extraordinaire. Dan made his living for decades as a freelance illustrator, winning competitions in everything from street painting to sand sculpture. At the same time he began mesmerizing audiences by producing 8-by-10-foot masterpieces in the streets and parks of Raleigh, North Carolina, his hometown. Besides setting up his plein air easel anywhere from California to France, Dan spends much of his time doing Live Art Performances in cities large and small, painting at festivals, concerts, and fundraisers. He has painted for the NC Symphony, the Carolina Hurricanes, IBM, Glaxo Smith Kline, and many of the major Corporations across the Triangle and beyond.

Mike Rooney www.mikerooneystudios.com Mike Rooney prefers painting outside to a comfortable studio. Bugs, bystanders and bad weather are just a few of the inconveniences he endures to capture the colors and nuances of his coastal subjects. He has painted in one form or another since childhood, and was once a sign painter and airbrush artist. Rooney also teaches painting workshops up and down the east coast and in Italy. Painting in oil, Rooney’s subject matter varies, but he loves to show the effect of light on water, boats, and the beach environment from the salt marshes of Cape Cod and rugged coast of Maine, to the mangroves and turquoise waters of Key West. Mike is also a painting instructor teaching up and down the east coast and abroad. He has also filmed several how-to DVDs on painting with brush and painting knives. The blurs of color Mike Rooney paints on-site are recognizable as boats, beach houses, and seas and they desire the great outdoors as much as the painter himself.

Eric Scott –is an artist/educator born and raised in Washington, Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and currently lives in Purcellville VA. Eric recently earned certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and teaches high school art for Loudoun County Public Schools. In 2005, David and Eric teamed up to officially become the Journal Fodder Junkies (JFJ), and they have been dedicated to spreading the power and the joy of the visual journal to all who seek creative release. David and Eric have continued to provide workshops, presentations, and seminars to teachers, students, and artists throughout the country, and they have coauthored the best selling book, The Journal Junkies Workshop: Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict, published in 2010 by North Light Books.

Carol Ann Sherman www.carolannshermanstudio.com That old saying “Love is lovelier the second time around” proved to hold true with my art. I finally found a way to fill that vacant spot in my life. I have since decided to make my art my partner, my companion and my love for life. I am currently employing watercolors, acrylics, batik and just a pinch of collage in my work. I do find the figure and its situation to be the most intriguing subject matter. I find the speechless animal emotion to talk louder than words at times. I feel it necessary to give voice to what I consider to be underlying emotion in our world. I like my paintings to portray a well written novel composed of strong composition, vivid lively color, lines of personality and an outstanding memorable emotional quality. The best reaction I can get from a viewer is a point and a giggle!

Carol’s Workshops: SA1314, SA1324, SU1302, SU1314

Karen Vernon www.karenvernon.com Karen Vernon has worked in watercolor for over fifty years and has taught watercolor workshops for more than 30 years. Her paintings have developed a worldwide market and hang in museum and corporate collections in Europe, the United States and throughout the world. She is a member of Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in America and holds signature memberships in several notable watercolor societies. She is the founder of ACT, Artist Changing Tomorrow and was a part and invitation group of 50 artists and one of the three watercolorists whose works toured as part of the national museum exhibition, “Sea to Shining Sea.” Ms. Vernon’s paintings are a unique presentation of traditional watercolor on Aquabord. Her paintings reflect an extreme understanding of color luminosity and a technical mastery of the medium. Vernon’s students applaud her for her openness and her skill in communicating the lessons. Students have complimented her ability to move them to new ways of thinking and to a higher level in their art.
