Feature Couple Lauren Bennett & Jeremy Hunsicker When it comes to true love and a Cinderella Story, no couple seems to fit the mold more than our “feature Couple” Jeremy Hunsicker and Lauren Bennett.

These two crazy kids met back in middle school and attended the same church, often with Lauren’s mom actually stopping to pick Jeremy up. After a while, her mom decided that these two were spending way too much time together and that the flirting was over the top but that didn’t stop them! Sadly, Jeremy moved out of the area after he turned 18 and the two fell out of contact. One night, while Lauren was out having a 8 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

few drinks, not knowing that Jeremy was back in town, she ran into her true love once again and they picked up right where they left off! Thousands of texts messages turned into hours of phone calls which led to countless dates and the two were practically inseparable from then on.

JL

Lauren, a makeup artist, is around weddings 24/7, so the two actually had their entire wedding planned out before Jeremy ever proposed! While at a bridal show, which Lauren attends regularly because of her business, Jeremy decided to surprise her in front of the entire crowd (Lauren does not like to be in front of crowds in any way), and proposed to her in front of 200 people!

Make sure you explain the way you imagined this day from the time you were a little girl until the moment you say “I DO.” Don’t settle for anything less than the best! You deserve it!!

Lauren and Jeremy exchanged vows at Riverview Country Club on July 4th, 2014! We asked the couple to each share a bit of advice with future couples and here is what they had to say:

Jeremy’s advice:

Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff.

Lauren’s advice:

The best “bride advice” I can give a bride is to be true to yourself and be honest about what you are looking for. Interview a few more people than just one in each category.

A Milestone in Marriage Same Sex Couples Say “I Do” By Laurin Fegley Many suggested it would never come, yet here we are with a very eager group of people who can finally partake in the sanctity of marriage here in Pennsylvania. After years of battling it out in the courts the ruling was made in favor of inclusion and acceptance. Whatever your beliefs, this is a new group of people who will also be scooping up dates, venues and services almost immediately creating less availability than there has possibly been in the past. Many same sex couples who wanted to get married in the last few years have married in other states, but plenty more have been waiting to share this special moment right here at home in their own state closer to friends and relatives. Pennsylvania has so many unique places and spaces that those looking for a creative venue can easily find it and yet those looking for a traditional ballroom style wedding will have plenty of options as well! Many couples seeking something less traditional will explore outdoor venues, art galleries and mansions. Doesn’t sound so much different than the traditional brides and grooms of 2013 or any other year, does it? 12 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

Nope, it’s not! So what does all this really mean to the traditional bride and groom? Ultimately, nothing. Very little will be any different in the future except that we’ll see two people who could never have dreamed of this just a short time ago walking down the aisle sharing a life together just as traditional couples always have. “Bridal” suites may be replaced with “Couples” suites, contracts will become inclusive to all and few will ever notice the difference… Just a few more fish in the pond!

Love is blind and has no boundaries.

Wedding Day Skin Care By Maureen Sangiorgio Worried about how to get your skin in top-notch shape for your wedding day? Take a deep breath and relax! Follow this step-by-step countdown for glowing wedding skin. Six Months Prior:

Moisturize from the inside out. Whether your skin is oily or dry, skin craves water, so aim for 8 to 10 glasses a day. Keep a water bottle at work, and one in your car for quick and easy access. Also snack on moisture-rich foods such as watermelon, grapefruit, broccoli, and lettuce. Nix the java. It’s not only better for your skin, but the last thing you need now is drinking anything that makes you stressed out! It’s easier to gradually cut out caffeinated foods and drinks rather than going cold turkey right before the wedding.

Three Months Prior:

Schedule your first facial. “Three months prior to the wedding the bride should have a consultation with a licensed, reputable skin care professional,” advises Irene Kouflis of European Body Concepts. “The bride should then get a facial once a month until a week before the wedding. The facials should minimize large pores, even out skin tone, and result in glowing skin for all the wedding photos.” Also discuss make up, eye brow shape, excess facial hair, and Brazilian waxing. 14 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

One Week Prior:

Exfoliate. “I recommend a Vichy full-body exfoliation so the skin glows, and to make it come alive when wearing the bridal gown,” says Kouflis. “Exfoliating the skin will also make it more receptive to an all-over-body moisturizer in tint Veil Shimmer so the skin sparkles!” Apply a self-tanner. Follow these tips from the American Academy of Dermatology: • First, apply an exfoliating product to help remove dead skin cells. Spend a little more time exfoliating where your skin is thickest — elbows, knees and ankles. • Second, dry your skin so the self-tanner goes on evenly. • Third, apply the self-tanner in sections (such as the arms, then legs, followed by the torso). Massage the self-tanner into your skin in a circular motion. • Wash your hands after each section to avoid orange-colored palms. • Give your skin time to dry. Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed. For the next three hours, it is best to wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.

A New Twist on an Old Tradition By Frederick Jerant Last year, Knot Yet: The Benefits and Costs of Delayed Marriage in America made an interesting observation: “Culturally, young adults have increasingly come to see marriage as a ‘capstone’ rather than a ‘cornerstone’—that is, something they do after they have all their other ducks in a row, rather than a foundation for launching into adulthood and parenthood...” And the same report noted that cohabitation is skyrocketing. Translation: when these older couples marry, they probably have all the household gear they need. Heck, they may already own a house! Which can make buying a wedding gift a bit of challenge. Fortunately, Scott Rothenberger, owner of PLACE (a Barto-based firm that designs and creates exciting living spaces) offers a novel alternative to selecting tired old china and silver patterns. PLACE lets soon-to-weds create a landscape/garden registry, where guests can purchase plants, flowers, landscaping and other services. It started with a simple question. “A bride asked if we’d ever used a landscape registry before. I said “No…but we CAN!” and it took off from there,” Rothenberger recalls. I’d never heard of it, either, but Rothenberger walked me through it, step-by-step. 16 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

The plans

Rothenberger meets with his clients and walks the property, reviewing the space and their likes/dislikes in greenery, pavers and other key elements. From those notes, he creates detailed handdrawn outlines of all aspects of the project, and takes his clients to visit actual installations. “It helps them get the essence of the space. And the finished work is more representative of what they’ll end up with. They can also talk to those clients about their experiences,” he says.

The customized website

Rothenberger sets up a customized personal website for the couple. It includes the conceptual drawings and an itemized price list of the many materials involved – hedges, shrubs, pavers, flowers, timbers, sod…you name it.

Register Here (cont’d.) “Guests can visit the site, and pre-purchase as much or as little as they’d like,” he explains, adding that unclaimed items on the list are often paid for by the newlyweds themselves – and not necessarily at the outset. “They might opt to go as far as they can, and then finish the project in steps,” he explains, even years later.

The installation

Landscape work is subject to the vagaries of scheduling, weather and other factors, of course, and this is where PLACE’s flexibility comes into play. “Every situation is unique,” Rothenberger says. “Depending on the contract, PLACE might handle everything from beginning to end. Sometimes clients want to use another contractor, and we’ll manage the project. At other times, we’ll bring in decorative rocks and boulders, and the client will handle the planting. We take whatever approach works best.”

Pricing

Every PLACE project is customized, so it’s impossible to come up with an “average” price. But Rothenberger says the bottom line can range from as little as $3,500 to $25,000 and beyond. And using the registry can help bring even the dreamiest landscape down-to-earth. “Let’s say you have 150 guests, and each one contributes $100 to your project. That’s $15,000 already paid off by your friends and family,” he says. Using the landscape registry is a terrific way to make your special day even more so. “Just imagine using little trees to decorate your reception, and then planting them outside. Your wedding photos will show the saplings -but 10 years later, you might see your first child outside playing on that same tree,” he says. “It’s a wonderful way to connect all aspects of your wedding experience.”

Landscaping design PLUS

Because PLACE also is experienced in event decorating and planning, Rothenberger can skillfully incorporate some of the gifted materials into the reception’s décor. “Decorating with natural materials is a huge trend, and ‘bringing the outdoors inside’ is something I’ve done for years. I see the use of these pre-purchased materials as the next logical step,” he says. For example, he could bring into the hall a few small trees or shrubs, perhaps some hydrangea bushes and ornamental grasses – and transplant them after the festivities have ended. “It’s a simple way to add natural beauty to a space,” he adds. 18 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

The Well-Suited Groom By Frederick Jerant

Perry Ellis “Grey Madison”

Choosing a bridal gown is a major undertaking. So many considerations -- from style through color to price -- come into play, it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. Guys, on the other hand, usually just end up in a tuxedo. But if you want to look your best on your wedding day, there are still some simple guidelines to follow. I spoke recently with the owners of two of the Lehigh Valley’s premier men’s formalwear stores, who filled me in on what the well-suited groom is wearing this year.

Styles

Fabrics/colors

Look for some light texturing, too, or perhaps tone-on-tone stripes, to add a bit of visual depth, unlike a flat business suit.

The favored fabric is still 100% wool, most often in the super 100-120 range. That number simply indicates the fineness of the wool itself, not its quality. “It’s a lighter, softer wool,” says Ron Kahan, owner of Top Hat Formalwear in Whitehall. As far as color goes, it’s hard to go wrong with basic black. “Gray is also popular,” says Marty Semmel, co-owner of C. E. Roth Formal Wear in Allentown. “They’re usually in lighter shades to avoid looking like a regular suit. White and offwhite tuxedos are available, too.” Kahan adds, “I’ve also seen some grooms choose a white shawl-collar jacket with black satin trim on the lapels, and pair it with black trousers.” 20 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

Both men agree that slimmer silhouettes are hot. Semmel says, “More people are biking and running, so they’re in good athletic shape – and they want to show it off.” That’s why you’ll find jackets that fit snugly in the torso; pants feature trimmer legs.

Single-breasted jackets are the norm, and most feature simple closures. “For a while, jackets were longer, and three-, four-, even five-button styles were popular,” Kahan says. “Today, we’re back to ones and twos.” The overall look is rather muted. Satin-covered lapels – a former tuxedo hallmark – have become satin-edged, with a more-matte finish. In many cases, the traditional satin trouser stripe is gone, as well.

The Well-Suited Groom (cont’d.) Popular lapel styles include notched (similar to those on the typical business suit), peaked (with a point extending beyond the rest of the lapel), and the shawl, which drapes in a continuous curve.

Ties

And never pair a tailcoat with a long tie.

Long ties with tuxedoes? Semmel traces it to America’s changing dress code. “It evolved from suits and ties to ‘casual every-day.’ Nightclubbers adopted suits and ties to set themselves apart. So when it comes to tuxedoes, many men are more comfortable with long ties, and think bow ties are a bit over the top.” But traditional bows are reasserting themselves. Semmel says about 50% of his prom patrons chose bow ties this year, and younger guys tend to be trend-setters.

Destination weddings

“Destination weddings are often held on islands or beach resorts,” Kahan says, “and the atmosphere is usually a bit less formal.”

Pictured below: After Six "LaStrada"

In keeping with those sandy tones, tan is the preferred color – but the tux often sports so little trim, it could pass as a regular suit. Semmel agrees with the color, but adds that some resorts also have specific wedding venues and rules – so plan accordingly. “You might get married on the beach, wearing just the shirt and pants,” he says. “But the reception hall could require a jacket and shoes.”

Accessories

Vests, cummerbunds, pocket squares and ties can add welcome splashes of color to your ensemble – especially if you match them with the bride’s colors. For a long tie, stick with a vest and a flatcollared shirt, Kahan says. Bow ties can be worn with either the traditional wing collar or a flat style, adds Semmel, with flat collars in the lead (for now). Plain-fronted shirts still rule, although pleats and ruffles are beginning to creep back. Either will help you tuxedo look less like business wear. Cuff links and shirt studs – usually in black or smoky gray, and always when wearing a bow tie – are de rigueur. Looking your best on your big day doesn’t have to be a chore, especially if you follow our experts’ guidelines. To make it as simple as possible, Ron Kahan suggests visiting a fullservice formalwear store. “It’ll have everything you’ll need on the premises. Outlet stores must order certain items, and that carries the risk of late deliveries.”

22 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

But Marty Semmel sums it up best: “When your bride says ‘I love the look’ – agree with her!”

All That Glitters Jewelry Trends in Women’s Bands By Samantha Parks Photography By Tim Miller

In today’s society, the trends for individual expression are stronger than ever. So it only stands to reason that when making a purchase as important as the ring that you are going to slip on her finger, on what is guaranteed to be one of the biggest days of her life, is as beautiful and unique as she is. Last year the trend seemed to still be buying wedding bands out of the case, the standard either gold band or matching band to the engagement ring purchased. But over the course of the last year the trend has shifted

totally according to Tom Mussleman owner of Mussleman Jewelers in downtown Bethlehem. “Although the standard inventory designs are beautiful and still purchased, more couples are coming in and asking me to design their band or bands because out of the case designs 24 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

just do not state the couples need to express themselves and their love for one another,” says Mussleman. They want something different, something that no one else currently has or will ever have. They want the ring as unique as their love for one another! Now, for the big question: “What is this going to cost?” Since the couple of today seems to be trending more and more towards paying for their own wedding at a time when disposable income is at an all-time low, it is important to remember that custom rings can be only as costly as you make them. With all the different metals and gemstones available the possibilities are endless and will still allow for that unique, one of a kind design that you are looking for. So sit down, have fun and design away and just remember, this ring is the symbol of what the two of you hold dear for something that is meant to last a lifetime.

All That Glitters

Jewelry Trends in Men’s Bands By Maureen Sangiorgio

If you think the only choice the groom has in wedding bands is a plain, gold ring, think again. Today’s groom has many styles to choose from, ranging from simple to diamond-studded ornate. For most men, their wedding band is their first big jewelry investment, so you want to do it right. Follow these tips to choose the band that’s right for you. Personalize it.

Ask yourself the following question – what do I do all day? If you work in construction, for example, choose a wedding band made of durable material, such as platinum instead of gold, which tends to be a softer metal. If you’re very active and work out every day, and your idea of “getting away from it all” is extreme skiing, avoid matte finishes which show scratches and decorative details which will lose their shape after one too many knocks.

Opt for style.

Once rarely seen, diamond wedding rings for men are now very acceptable. The most popular styles are understated, encrusted with just under a full carat of diamonds. The stone is set flush with the ring to create a smooth exterior and to help hold the stone tight. Also popular in men’s wedding bands are the black, brown, champagne, and yellow diamonds.

Make it modern.

The latest trends from Lashbrook (Eight-time winner of the Jewelers’ Circular Keystone Magazine and Jewelers’ Choice awards 2012-14) are the performance metals in contemporary styling. “Cobalt Chrome is our most popular metal,” says Peter Fenstermaker of Roberts Jewelers. “It gives the look of Platinum at a lower price point, has the heft of gold, and is a durable metal. We also sell a lot of titanium bands which are aerospace-grade, and come in over 30,000 styles.”

Think outside the box.

“Black Zirconium is desirable for the guys who want something a little edgy and different,” notes Fenstermaker. “When Zirconium is heated it creates a black, oxidized coating which is scratch resistant, and adds a lot of versatility in the two-tone designs.”

With Lashbrook offering so many different types of metals and designs there is sure to be one for you and if not, rest assured, they are more than happy to customize! 26 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

All That Glitters Jewelry Trends for Attendant’s Gifts By Susan Bella Linski Photography By Tim Miller

Trends come and go for bridal jewelry and attire just like anything... remember those big poofy shoulders on dresses and those choke necklaces that did just that? Well, times are changing! To look at jewelry trends, we must first look at the modern bride. Who is she? The national average says she’s 27 years of age for the first marriage (compared to 23 years of age in 1990)*, and has a higher average annual personal income as compared to the brides of the 90’s. Now that I’ve replaced romanticism with statistics, let me tell you why. One question I often hear, when brides are shopping for their attendants, is ‘what should I spend on my bridesmaids?’ There is not a right or wrong answer for this, just one simple rule. Always choose something they can wear again and again... always. Every time they wear that piece, they will think of you and the special bond you share. Typically, today’s bride is spending more per attendant than they have in the past. Also, the number of attendants is much lower than in years past. It is also common for the maid-ofhonor as well as the best man to receive a little something extra from the couple. Today that ‘little’ something extra is not as little. For her, it may mean a pair of earrings and a bracelet. For him, it may mean a watch and cufflinks 28 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

I also like recommending jewelry from a collection that they can add to in the future, whether it’s a STORY bracelet/necklace or a LORI BONN bracelet (both pictured on this page) that they can add charms to, or a beautiful pair of earrings that they can add coordinating pieces to. You will be giving them the start of a collection they can build on. These guidelines also apply to mothers of the engaged couple... think simple, stylish, sophisticated, sentimental. And honestly, what mom isn’t going to love jewelry that you pick out for them yourself? *http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/ archive/2013/03/getting-married-later-is-greatfor-college-educated-women/274040/

Venue Spotlight: Malibu Dude

Celebrate Country Style Ranch By Samantha Parks

For many, a destination wedding means catching a flight, heading away to some exotic island and walking barefoot on the sand to exchange vows. But nestled right in the heart of the Pocono Mountains in Milford, PA, just a short 2-hour drive from the Lehigh Valley is a different type of destination wedding setting. The Malibu Dude Ranch is something out of a storybook. Set on 800 acres and backed by 14,000 acres of state game lands, this serene and magnificent setting offers the happy couple-to-be, a unique option when choosing where to celebrate with family and friends. A family-owned business purchased by Dr. Detweiler and his wife, Phyllis, back in December of 2010. When ”Doc” heard that the place he grew up horseback riding and fishing was going to be sold and torn down to make homes he just knew that he had to step in and save it. Now, this picturesque place continues to work as a true dude ranch. Everyone at the ranch is like “family” and that is how you are treated from the moment you step foot onto the property. Whether you are looking to have a small intimate affair or you want to have a weekend getaway with the entire wedding guest list, which with 85 guests or more the facility is closed to the public and it is all yours from Friday – Sunday afternoon, the Malibu Dude Ranch is the place to go. There are accommodations for everyone. Guest rooms range from a traditional room in the main house to the private cottages and even a

bridal suite. There is so much to do once you arrive at the ranch. Horseback riding, fishing, swimming, archery, shooting and so much more and it is all included! As for the wedding itself? Picture yourself under the archway in front of the lake with all your guests surrounding you. Just imagine walking in the beautiful field with horses or getting in one of the boats and rowing out onto the lake to have your photos taken? There truly is nothing else like this anywhere in PA or the entire east coast for that matter. When it comes to choosing your food, the options are endless. You can have a traditional western style BBQ with all the fixins’ or customize your own menu to your taste. The bar area boasts a dance floor for your band or DJ and once again done in true western fashion. So when you decide you want to “get away” and have a destination wedding, don’t overlook one of the most unique and one-of-a-kind places that is right here in PA. After all, where else can you take 85 of your friends and family to share in your “big day” but make it an entire weekend experience you will never forget - all for one price?

Olde Homestead The Place is Worth the “Drive” Golf Club

By Samantha Parks | Photography by Tim Miller

Located at the base of the beautiful Appalachian Trail in New Tripoli, PA, sits a family-owned Lehigh Valley Gem. Olde Homestead farm was built 250 years ago by the Snyder family and remains in the family still to this day. The golf course was added in 1995 and touts a 4.5 star 18-Hole Championship course, a 9-Hole Executive par 3 course, a beautiful practice range and the newest addition, a 9-Hole Foot Golf course. But this is just the beginning of what this magnificent setting has to offer. Undergoing a tremendous amount of change over the last year, Olde Homestead is now a serene and picturesque setting to host your wedding and reception. With the installation of a permanent outdoor tent raised off the ground with outdoor carpeting and a cathedral ceiling, a newly remodeled carriage house, the original potato barn and a magnificent setting overlooking the property to say your vows, this facility has it all. The tent which is situated out on the course overlooking the lake, is perfect for the couple who wasn’t sure where to end their guest list. Seating 350 comfortably with room to spare, there is no other venue in the area offering anything like this on a permanent basis. The original potato barn is a step back in time. With its rustic décor it is perfect for smaller, more intimate affairs or the perfect place to host your cocktail reception before entering into the tent for your reception. The Carriage House which sits atop the hill and overlooks the majestic greens boasts added touches such as a full bridal suite, a separate bar area, seating outside and some of the original barn doors. Seating in the carriage house is perfect for up to 120 people leaving 32 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

plenty of room for the after-dinner festivities.

The outdoor ceremony site is an absolute must see!

The beautiful landscaping and the natural mountain background is just the most perfect of settings to share your first kiss as husband and wife. Olde Homestead has a preferred vendor list that they work with. Everything from caterers, to photographers, DJs, rental companies. They even have a partnership with the local hotel which allows your out-of-town guests to park and be transported to and from the facility without having to drive themselves. With many years of experience in the wedding industry, Hope Hilby, the Sales Manager, welcomes you to call her to set up a time to come and tour the facility. She along with the rest of the staff will work closely with you to coordinate all your details to ensure that your day is the one you always dreamed it would be.

The Brookview Classic Elegance with Manor Inn Old World Charm

By Samantha Parks

Looking for timeless elegance and classic beauty for your destination wedding? Then look no further than The Brookview Manor Inn located in Canadensis, PA in the Pocono Mountains.

The Brookview Manor Inn was purchased back in 2001 by Gaile & Marty Horowitz, who decided they needed a change of life when their youngest daughter left for college. The couple from Long Island looked long and hard for their future investment and happened upon the Brookview Manor Inn. They both instantly fell in love and the rest is history. Situated on a little over 5 acres and overlooking the Brodhead Creek, the inn is surrounded by over 200 acres of privately-owned wooded land. The main house is Victorian style and the lawns are nestled under towering hemlocks with a gorgeous view where each season reflects the beauty of nature. The Brookview Manor Inn offers several different options when it comes to how you want to share your big day. The “Just the two of us” elopement package includes your ceremony in the gazebo, gardens or in front of the fireplace and your choice of Jacuzzi room or Elegant suite, along with champagne, breakfast the next morning and goodies for you to take 34 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

along home. The “Intimate Affair” includes everything for the couple that the elopement package offers but adds in the wedding cake, candlelight dinner for the bride and groom (additional guests are $25pp.), and champagne toast for all. The Brookview Manor Inn specializes in small intimate affairs and can handle up to 50 people comfortably. There are 10 guest rooms in the main house and some of the rooms sleep 4. Gaile and Marty will assist the couple with every aspect of their wedding or the bride can bring in their own vendors with the exception of the food and liquor. When it comes to choosing your menu for the reception, you have so many different options. You can pick a small 2-hour luncheon to the traditional 5-hour affair with a cocktail hour, butlered hors d’oeuvres, platters and displays followed by a 5-course dinner. You will have the opportunity to sit down with the chef and customize the menu that is perfect for you and your guests. Gaile welcomes you to call and make an appointment with her to walk around the grounds and talk with her about what you would like for your day. They have something for everyone and can work within any budget.

Finding the Perfect Home Pre-Approved? What Next? By Jennifer Schimmel: Associate Broker/Owner: Keller Williams

You’ve been out searching and now have been approved by a reputable mortgage lender what comes next? You can now begin then search for your new home! There are many ways to search for a home but connecting yourself with a real estate professional is crucial. When you align yourself with an experienced agent you will have someone working for only your best interest to find you exactly what you have been searching for. This gives you access to the most current and up to date real estate information as well as any new listings the second they become available for sale. When working with a real estate agent you may see properties while you are driving around or even while you are searching online. Remember to contact the agent that you have selected for additional information and to schedule a personal showing to avoid any confusion with the seller’s agent. Some agents have personal apps that you can download onto your phone or iPad to help you locate properties and the information instantly. Once you have had an opportunity to schedule a preview with your agent make sure while you are there to ask any questions and express 52 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

any concerns during the showing. You will be given a sellers disclosure if it is available. This disclosure will reveal any issues or non-issues that the seller has had with the property while they have lived there. While walking through the property your agent may point out positives and negatives and give you their opinion on the condition of the major systems in the home. They may also give you information on other comparable sold properties in the area.

Could this be the home you have been searching for?

Great homes do not stay on the market long so if this is the house you want to call home make sure you ask any questions you have right away. Your agent can have an offer prepared within an hour and should be able to get any questions answered within a couple of hours. Your agent will also advise you on what would be a fair and reasonable offer. Typical response time is about 24 hours once the offer is submitted!

Good luck and happy hunting!

Budget 101 Spend it Wisely

By Laurin Fegley, Owner Simply Smooth Catering and Event Planning

Since one’s budget plays such a big role in the things that are possible, it should be just about the first item to be addressed shortly after “I will”! There are many excellent questions that deserve a lot of answers regarding the funding and proper planning of your wedding and your overall wedding day. Ultimately whatever your choices, they need to fit into your wallet, especially if you plan on making it happen so that you are less stressed and more comfortable in the weeks and months before your wedding. The website www.costofwedding.com is a very useful resource to see what the average cost of weddings are nationwide. Put in your zip code and see what things cost in the market you are located in. Selecting quality vendors to provide your services is key to a less stressful planning process. There are books to go with books and guides like the one in the back of this magazine that will all help you in determining what a reasonable budget might be. But before you go to that section here are key things to keep in mind… 54 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

Keep everything together so contracts and details aren’t everywhere…

You probably don’t need a spreadsheet or a degree in mathematics, but just the ability to keep everything together, in one folder, with an accounting of what you’ve spent – and you’ll be golden! The more that can get forgotten or lost, the more costly your wedding will become.

When to book a facility and at what cost…

Before you book a venue get a reasonable estimate on what the “real” costs are of having an event there, not just a rental fee! Does it require tenting, dance floor, ceremony chairs, etc.? That estimate needs to include approved vendors, actual costs or reasonable estimates over the phone and any hidden fees. Don’t hesitate to ask vendors or the venue about these costs!

Budget 101 (cont’d.) What About Bar Packages?

Assume nothing in your budget!

Can I provide my own alcohol? If so, who can serve it? Preferred Vendors or the cost of using a vendor who is not preferred? What is the cost of an extra hour? What time does the party need to end? When does set-up need to occur? These are just a few of the questions that you are going to want to make sure you ask when considering where your reception is going to take place. If a facility is more than 12-16% of your total budget for the day and does not include catering, this will probably not work out well in the future. With catering and or a bar package you’ll be more in the 60-65% of total budget range. Once booked it’s a little late to find out that it’s not within your budget and you often cannot get your money!

Filling in the blanks on a budget page with what you “think” some items should cost may be disastrous! For instance, did you think about the dance floor or lighting to go with the tenting you’ll need for your outdoor event? If you didn’t, that could prove to be a $1,000 mistake. A few phone calls will probably save you much aggravation later! Vendors can help you make wise choices as

“I want to have my wedding in my parents’ yard to save money.” Ah, no. Outdoor weddings add 35-40% or more to the cost of any party. Those costs are related to tenting, tables, chairs, dance floor and other rentals including nice rest facilities for your guests.

to what you will need, how much it costs and remind you of some items like lighting in the tent that you might not have thought about until it’s dark!

What does having an outdoor reception do to my cost?

Most of those additional costs are not necessary in a traditional venue where you also have the luxuries of air conditioning, heat, being dry and restrooms. So with all that being said and you have the budget, nothing can be more beautiful than a welldesigned outdoor affair!

In planning, there is nothing wrong with adding in a “slush” fund for add-ons later or slight miscalculations in the initial planning stage. It’s recommended that you leave about 10% in this area just in case something arises that you weren’t expecting!

How do I budget for Catering?

Most people have no problem with the cost of a catering menu, yet rarely do folks realize that the cost of that $35-$50 menu is just the beginning of catering. There are always

Continued on p56

Budget 101 (cont’d.) linens, china, flatware, stemware and more! Staffing is usually billed on an as-needed basis versus just paying a percentage-based gratuity, there can often be a service charge which covers other related costs, and of course, gratuity. Those things can be nearly twice as costly as the base cost of the food itself. A catering budget may be as high as 60% of your overall budget for your wedding.

Couture at affordable prices.

The average cost of a stretch sedan limousine is about $350 - $475 for a 3-4 hour package, which in most cases is ample. Stretch SUV’s will start around $750 - $1,000 and will be higher in price depending on the seating capacity. Specialty cars can be procured, usually starting somewhere in the area of $1,000 and will usually have mileage limitations as well. Additional hours can be added in advance, but not always the day of as the same car may have a job following yours – confirm this in advance with your coach company.

There are a wide range of photographers with a wide range of price points. Photography, like several other areas of wedding planning, is subjective as an art form. You will find photographers from a few hundred dollars to those that cost thousands of dollars and everything in between. On average good quality photography costs start somewhere around $2,000. Some

Entertainment: Let the Music Play…

This is a make it or break it service! No one forgets a DJ who thinks everyone wants to hear him and not the music. Make sure when you are selecting a personality that you select the actual person you will have at your reception. Good DJ’s start at $1,000, with lighting packages and other options available as well. Some entertainment companies start in price at $2500 and up. Bands usually price from $4000 for some local ones to $8-12000 for a metro band.

Dessert: Sweets, glorious sweets!

A wedding cake is a work of art. Learning the difference between whipped cream, rolled fondant and butter cream is not a bad experience – because you get to eat cake the whole way through! Be wary of

Budget 101 (cont’d.) your friend who knows someone who wants to make your cake. Most people don’t have proper refrigeration in their homes to hold a wedding cake at a low enough temperature and delivery is challenging to say the least. Next to the happy couple, this is the second most photographed item at a wedding – it’s worth paying a professional for that reason alone! A good range for pricing is as follows: Butter cream cakes from $3.50/slice, Whipped cream cakes from $4/slice and Fondant ranges from about $6/slice depending on the difficulty of the pattern, could be more. Fillings can add about another dollar or so to the pricing. Various patterns will add to pricing as well, but there are many beautiful affordable ones that will be options as well! Invitations: Save the Date… Most invitations start at about $2 each on a seal and send to $3-5/set for basic sets. Pockets and other really nice upscale options will range from $7 and up. When does DIY make sense? Most couples will find that doing a lot of DIY projects with details that have to wait until the day or two before their wedding day can prove frustrating as there is so much going on those last few days and friends are flying in from out of town, etc. At the end of the day, if you can do some DIY projects and be done a few weeks before your wedding – go for it. If it requires you baking your own cake or making your own centerpieces or

Honeymoon Do’s & Dont’s What Every Couple Needs to Know By Jennifer Doncsecz, CTIE Owner VIP Vacations, Inc.

First comes the wedding and then it’s time for the honeymoon. Even if you are having a destination wedding, there is still a good probability that you will honeymoon too! Here are my do’s and don’ts for honeymooners: 5 Do’s-

1. Formulate a budget. 2. Plan early. 3. Use a travel agent that can work with your budget and time-line. 4. Create a honeymoon registry for those splurge items you hope for but haven’t budgeted for. 5. Communicate with your fiancé about what you both envision for your honeymoon (it is your first experience as husband/wife where memories can be created that only the two of you will share).

5 Don’ts-

1. Do not wait until the last minute in hope of finding a deal. Normally you will not find one and then you will end up with something that is far less than the dream honeymoon that you had hoped for. 2. Do not just pick a destination because you heard from friends that it was a good spot. 64 Exquisite Bride | www.exquisitebride.net

Every person has a different style and taste so only when you work with a travel professional can you examine what location fits your wants/ needs. 3. Don’t surprise your fiancé. (This should be a joint decision and if there is any surprise, it should based on what the other had always hoped for) 4. Don’t hope for HONEYMOON perks and upgrades. Gone are the days when honeymooners are automatically upgraded to first class or ocean view. It is best to reserve what you would be happy with rather than being disappointed in unfulfilled expectations. 5. Don’t buy insurance to protect you from bad weather. Often times, insurance doesn’t cover “acts of nature” and cancel for any reason insurance relies on you canceling up to 3 days prior —we all know that weather is unpredictable and a 3 day notice for a pricey insurance rarely makes the costs worthwhile.
