Friday Evening Shabbat Services

rabbibloch@cbiboca.org Well I got "the call" this summer. My mother called me and told me that she and my father were selling the house they have lived in for the last sixteen years. I didn’t grow up in that house, but I had stayed there many weekends during grad school, for visits home during Rabbinical school, and even during my time in Florida. For all purposes, it was still a place I called “home.” It was the place I stayed when I would visit Michigan. It was the place Jason and I would bring Maya. It was where my extended family would celebrate anniversaries and birthdays and cry together through our trials and tribulations. It was where we shared so many memories and so much joy!

As I packed up several boxes and took them to be shipped to Florida, I began to ponder “What exactly is home?” I went back to their house one last time and walked around the empty space that no longer had our furniture, our pictures, our chachkies, and cried as I took pictures of each room. I thought about the number of years that have gone by and how my family has changed—all of us older, more settled in our lives and our work, and about how our immediate family has expanded to include my siblings’ spouses and many, many more children.

That day, I could see very clearly the extent to which houses are just a foundation. Those structures can come and go—after all, they are just some wood and dry wall. What really matters is what we put inside the houses—our families. Because the precious memories we create while we are As my parents packed up this summer, I together in those spaces—those memories would often get a phone call about the are what turn houses into homes. things I had left there from my childhood. From The Desk Of...

Robin Siegal President, Board of Trustees

robin.siegal@cbiboca.org I hope you had a wonderful and fulfilling High Holiday experience with us at CBI. It was both an honor and a pleasure to welcome so many members and guests to our services, both in person and online! This season has been a particularly poignant one for our congregation. Our beloved Cantor Stephanie Shore and her wife Sarah have been enduring a great challenge since early this summer, fighting for the health of their beautiful baby daughter, Sawyer. Seeing the support and love that everyone has offered to Cantor and Sarah has been heartwarming—a true blessing. I know you all join me in Mi Shebeirach prayer for Sawyer and for all in our community who are suffering from illness, both physical and mental. CBI has always been a special place, always concerned for those who have had challenges in their lives. Our Ezrat Am caring community group, is one of the many outlets that offers help to our CBI members under stress. Its mission is to serve the needs of individuals and families in emergency situations through referrals or direct assistance. Susan Mayer, the Chair of the committee, is a wonderful, warm, kind, and caring individual! She helps coordinate driving members to appointments, providing meals, as well as helping obtain professional advice for our members in need. Her committee is always looking for more volunteers. Consider contacting her at susanmayerfl@gmail.com. Another incredible hidden gem is our Tzevet T’shuvah, our Recovery Team. Led by Dennis Bliden, it is a safe haven for members and non-members to experience fellowship and healing as they recover from various types of abuse. Please contact Dennis at dennis@artmar.com for more information. We also provide help for the community through our Kantor Family Center for Justice. CBI has partnered with many community outreach programs such as The Soup Kitchen of Boynton Beach, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and The Milagro Center. Get more than you give by volunteering, or bringing your children to volunteer. See the Shelanu for details on the many opportunities. And please remember that our wonderful clergy and senior staff members are here and available to you for confidential discussions. We are your CBI family. We want to share in your simchas and also be here for you in times of need. Let’s start out the (Jewish) New Year by committing ourselves to healing and helping. Support us in any way you can so we can support you! L’Shanah Tovah.

CONGREGATION B'NAI ISRAEL

Rick Schuster Interim Executive Director

rick@cbiboca.org I first met Robin Siegal when she served as chair of a committee I staffed here at CBI. Later on we began attending the Florence Melton School offered here at CBI. We eventually went through five years of study together. I went on to join the Melton study tour to Poland and Israel, an extraordinary look at the rise and destruction of Jewish life in Poland, and how its survivors helped shape the State of Israel. Robin is enrolled in “Beyond Borders: Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict” class starting at CBI as part of CBI Talks: Adult Learning programming. The Melton program is based at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The late Florence Melton, who lived here in Boca Raton, created it for the purpose of bringing quality and accessible education to Jewish adults – to bring them closer to their Judaism and their synagogues. The study is based on texts, which are read together in class (no homework). Generally, those texts begin with Torah and ancient sources and then move forward toward today. They include Orthodox, Conservative and Reform points of view to show how Jewish thinking has evolved and are reflected in today’s world. Political and historical issues work the same way, using excerpts from historical documents to set context and show how issues develop. The teachers leading the discussion are superb, moving the discussion along, adding information, context, and insight. Part of the experience is the people you study with. They are men and women of various ages and backgrounds. Each brings their own perspective and respect for wherever a classmate is coming from. The core courses are best taken as a two year program, where you study three hours once a week in two classes for 25 weeks per year for two years. Sounds like a lot, but time flies. The courses are interesting and insightful no matter your background. All you need to bring is the curiosity — the intellectual or spiritual itch — to understand your Judaism a little more fully. The four topics are Rhythms of Jewish Living, Purposes of Jewish Living, Crossroads of Jewish History, and Ethics of Jewish Living. The great bonus in taking the core courses is that the group generally sticks together, whether you attend the two year program or spread them out. You find new friends to greet and socialize with at services and synagogue events. You share a special bond because of the Melton experience. Robin organizes the semi-annual get together for our Melton group that graduated three years ago. I sit at services with friends I made at Melton. And when I return to retirement, I look forward to resuming my Jewish education at CBI’s Melton School classes and maybe being able to once again study with Robin Siegal seated next to me. This year, we have the honor of hosting Melton classes at CBI. Please visit our website, www.cbiboca.org to learn more, or see page 7 for details.

Pam DiGiacomo Director of Development

pam@cbiboca.org Welcome our new Director of Development, Pam DiGiacomo. Pam has also worked with lay leadership in developing strategic plans and goals. We look forward to her bringing her ideas and goals towards the continued growth of CBI. 5

Sports Director Sandy Grossman Honored

The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County recently announced that Lawrence Feldman, J.D. has been elected as its Vice Chair of Campaign. Feldman was elected at the Federation’s recent 2015 Annual Meeting. In his new position, Feldman will lead a communitywide cadre of volunteers to raise millions of dollars for the local community, Israel, and 70 other countries overseas.

Sandy Grossman, the late husband of our longtime member, Faithe Grossman, and father of member Dean Grossman, was honored in his hometown in Newark, New Jersey in a street naming ceremony. He was an 8-time Emmy Award winning sports director, having directed television broadcasts of 10 Super Bowls, 18 NBA Finals, 5 Stanley Cup finals and Olympic hockey matches. He passed away in 2014.

Miss Susan and Childhood Guitar Reunited Susan Shane-Linder hadn't seen her first guitar since the 1970s. Originally a gift for her fifth birthday, Miss Susan said she lost track of her guitar during high school when she got a new one. Somehow the guitar ended up at an estate sale in Minnesota, where it was purchased about 10 years ago. Recently, the family who purchased it noticed that Susan's name was marked inside of the instrument and decided to track her down. When the family found the musician's website, they thought for sure they had found the right person. Neither Miss Susan nor the family who connected with her knows how it ended up for sale in Minnesota. A grandfather purchased it at the estate sale about a decade ago for his grandchildren to play with, but it largely sat unused until recently. The family told her the children were excited to track her down. When she received the package, it came with a photo of them and several drawings. This Public Space Judaism program, in conjunction with the national outreach organization, Big Tent Judaism, takes place in a high-traffic produce section of Whole Foods before Rosh Hashanah. Staff members Sarah Freudenberger, Minda Shaiman, Pam Digiacamo, and volunteer Gail Sack represented our congregation along with Andrew Winninger, the Whole Foods marketing director. The event offered a gourmet honey tasting along with materials about Rosh Hashanah and about CBI to passersby in an effort to engage them more deeply in the holiday’s spirit and meaning, and to provide a first step to Jewish life at home and at CBI. Cantorial Associate Sarah Freudenberger leads several events at Whole Foods during select Jewish holidays throughout the year, including Chanukah and Passover. OCTOBER 2015

Rachel Greenberg Growing up in a tiny Jewish community, if you weren't involved, you didn’t feel connected. I had a traditional Jewish upbringing—we had a kosher home and both my parents served as president of our synagogue. We were taught that being a part of our synagogue was important. As I grew up, I continued my strong connection to Judaism. I attended Alexander Muss High School in Israel and upon graduating from Indiana University, took a job in DC with the pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC, where I worked for more than 12 years in DC, Baltimore, and South Florida. When my husband David and I moved to South Florida (he is from Hollywood, FL), we got married, and started a family. After a few years, we moved to Boca and decided to look for a pre-school for our almost 2 year old daughter. Little did we know that we would find our new Jewish home. We toured NCECE and fell in love. We were amazed at the academic and Jewish curriculum, the credentials of the teachers, the different playgrounds, the special events the kids partake in, and the school in general just blew us away. We enrolled our daughter immediately and I guess the rest is history. Through the school my children and I have made some of our closest friends. When we had our second child and I stopped working, I decided I wanted to get involved. Who would have guessed I would one day become the President of the Parent Organization! Through my involvement in the school I fell in love with CBI as a whole. Getting to know the synagogue leaders and professionals was amazing. But for David and me, it is the clergy that make us feel right at home. We love that our children know and love Rabbi Silvers, Rabbi Bloch, and Cantor Shore. I always thought it would be difficult for my husband and me to agree on a synagogue to join, get involved in, and grow with, but choosing CBI was easy. Through the amazing preschool, I got involved and we found our place. CBI means so much to us. It is a loving, caring, and amazing environment for our family.

Additional Ways to Support CBI

There are many ways to support CBI and at the same time remember the special events and people in your lives. CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY There are many opportunities to name programs by creating a perpetual endowment through the CBI Legacy Campaign. NAMED DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES There are a limited number of opportunities to name portions of our facilities and receive recognition on the dedication board outside the Cohen-Friedkin Sanctuary or the Hollander Family Chapel. MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN THE COHEN-FRIEDKIN SANCTUARY Remember a loved one with a bronze plaque on the Memorial Wall in the Cohen/Friedkin Sanctuary. A corresponding Lucite plaque is placed in the lighted Remembrance Stand on the anniversary of the yahrtzeit. Memorial Plaques are $650. LEAF ON THE TREE OF LIFE An inscribed “leaf” on the Tree of Life is a wonderful way to share a “living dedication” for a family simcha, especially for a birthday, anniversary, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, etc. Leaves on the Tree of Life are $750. GIFT-A-BRICK Engrave a brick on either the South Entrance walkway that leads past our schools and into the main sanctuary hallway or the South Pre-School Entrance walkway. Create a lasting memory, and write a message to honor a special person or moment. Each single brick is 4” x 8”, 12 characters per line, three lines per brick. Each double brick is 8” x 8”, 12 characters per line, six lines per brick. Bricks are $180 for single; $360 for double. CBI CELEBRATION TILES You and your family can create your own ceramic tile to uniquely remember your special CBI moments and events. Tiles are mounted on a wall along the South Entrance walkway, leading from the parking lot past our schools and into the main sanctuary corridor. Tiles are $40 for one tile, and $35 for each additional tile within the same family. Pick up forms and instructions from either the synagogue administrative office or school office.
