FALL 2016

From The Desk Of...

Rabbi Robert A. Silvers rabbisilvers@cbiboca.org

The Midrash (on Shir HaShirim – The Song of Songs), a 2,000-year-old compilation of Jewish ethics, spirituality and biblical commentary, relates the following episode: During the days of the Roman Empire, in the city of Tziporin, a Jewish village located at the west of Tiberius in the upper Galilee, lived an ordinary tailor by the name of Yusta. He served as the local tailor of the city’s residents and had his spot along the main street, where he would sit all day and tailor cloth. During a visit to mighty Rome, this simple man somehow managed to encounter the emperor and find favor in his eyes. As a gesture, the emperor offered to grant Yusta any wish he had. This tailor requested to be appointed as governor over his native city, Tziporin. When the newly appointed governor returned from Rome to his town, the Midrash says an argument ensued. “Some people who recognized him said that the governor is indeed none other than Yusta the tailor, while others argued that this was not the tailor.” One wise man suggested an idea to determine the truth: “As the new governor is about to parade through the market place of the city, we ought to look out for the moment when the governor will pass by the location where for many years he sat and tailored cloth. If upon passing this location, the governor will turn his head in that direction and gaze at that spot where he sat and tailored, we will know that he indeed is Yusta; but if he passes by and does not turn his eyes toward that location, we will know that he is not Yusta.” When the governor finally arrived and paraded down the main street, passing by his former place of work, the governor indeed turned his head to gaze at his former location of work, and everyone realized that he was none other than Yusta the former tailor. Two questions come to mind: 1) Living together with Yusta for many years, how did the townspeople not recognize the face and countenance of their landsman? And if for whatever reason they could not determine his identity, why did they not ask him, or one of the members of his entourage, who he was? Did they really have no choice but to debate the identity of their governor? And 2) The Midrash, being a part of Torah, is not merely a book of tales and episodes; rather, it is meant, as every single other word in Torah, to serve as

a blueprint for life, a document to guide, inspire and instruct the human being and the human race in their journey toward fixing the world. Yet this begs the question: Why does Torah choose to share with us this tale of a tailor convincing his former neighbors that he became a governor? What message of inspiration lies in this cute episode? One possible interpretation may be that the debate of the townspeople concerning the true identity of their governor was not whether the newly appointed governor was their very own Yusta the tailor. That was most likely obvious for all who looked at the face of the governor. The argument involved a far deeper question of whether the new governor still professed those refined and pietistic qualities that he had when he was a simple tailor. Had Yusta, the kind, genuine and humble spirit, retained his human and moral authenticity upon rising to power; or had the old Yusta “died,” only to be replaced by a new pompous, egotistical, self-centered and manipulative politician? Did Yusta sell his soul for the sake of political correctness and might? Did he lose that spark of moral dignity that makes us human, or did the old tailor still possess the ability to view himself as a simple man who was created to serve God? This, perhaps, was the significance behind the test orchestrated by the wise man. We must determine, said the wise man, if while parading through the city as its new boss, Yusta still possessed the subtle skill of looking back at where he came from, of remembering his former life as a tailor. For this is the true test of us all: Can one earnestly look back and recall that which was sacred and precious to them before one was promoted to a high position of honor? Can one still see themself as a simple, authentic, and vulnerable human being? Yusta passed the test. Even as governor, he forgot not the place he came from. He looked back and recalled the “spot” where he sat and sewed for many years. He remembered that he did not own his power, but that it was a gift to be used as a means to serve God and His children. This, essentially, is the primary theme of this time of the Jewish calendar, when we are about to bid farewell to a year gone by, and prepare to embrace a new one in its stead. The last month of the Hebrew calendar, known as the month of Elul, is the time designated from above to focus on whether our careers, successes and pressures of life have robbed us of our pristine humanness and authenticity. Have we become self-made individuals who worship their creator, or can we still look out to the real Creator of man?

CONGREGATION B'NAI ISRAEL

This question is asked of us as individuals and as a people, spanning 3000+ years. Many of us, thank God, have risen to positions our grandparents and great grandparents could have barely dreamed of. Like Yusta of the Galilee, we have substituted our grandparents’ and great grandparents’ tailor shops on the Lower East Side with lucrative careers and professions in commerce, politics, law, science, academia, and the arts. Yet the question is, do we still have the inner power to turn around to see the spot where our ancestors—new arrivals at Ellis Island— labored, and recall the moral and spiritual power that made the Jewish people tick for thousands of years? Or, perhaps, in our forceful drive to succeed and integrate, we forgot what it really means to be a Jew, to be obsessed with good and horrified by evil? During this time of year, we are granted the power to trace our lives back to our roots — to peek into our innermost heart and discover the presence of God waiting to be embraced, and see still the authentic self of who we are as Jews. From my family to yours… Shanah Tovah U’metuka – a good and sweet New Year.

FALL 2016

From The Desk Of...

Robin Siegal President, Board of Trustees president@cbiboca.org

The High Holy Days are a time for both celebration and introspection, a combination I find especially significant this year as I reflect on my first year as your President. We have spent a lot of time and energy this past year getting our synagogue through some trying circumstances. We prayed for some miracles and, humbly, I think received them; the good health of Sawyer, Cantor Shore’s now two-yearold daughter who is cancer free, the birth of her second baby girl, Saylor, and the birth of a healthy baby girl, Yael to Rabbi Bloch. We hired a wonderful new Executive Director, Steve Allen, and have done some re-organizing and re-training of staff. We installed a new Executive Board, all of whom assumed new positions in 2015, as well as many new Trustees. We created some new programs, including the Monthly Mitzvah Project. We hosted great speakers, Rabbi Daniel Freelander and Alan Dershowitz, and Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach serenaded us with their spiritually inspiring music. We watched films sponsored by the Nagle Family Film Festival and we celebrated Shabbats in our sanctuary, in our courtyard, and on the beach! We celebrated many b’nai mitzvahs, weddings and graduations. And we mourned as a community together some painful losses of congregants, family members, and friends. Our faith has been tested, our relationships have been challenged. Through it all, we remain the CBI family, inspiring each other to remain strong and true to the principles of Reform Judaism and the mission and vision of Congregation B’nai Israel. So, at this time of the Jewish year, what will you celebrate? What will you reflect upon? I would ask that within this framework, you consider your relationship with CBI and how it can be strengthened. What is your passion, what are your talents that can be shared with our community? Is there an activity or committee that sparks your interest? Consider trying something new - attend a service or a class that can broaden your horizons, volunteer for a social action project, join WRJ/Sisterhood or Brotherhood, any of which will result in new friendships and a deeper connection to our synagogue family. I hope there will be many opportunities in the coming year for you to participate and that you will COME BE INSPIRED AT CBI!

CONGREGATION B'NAI ISRAEL

Steve Allen Executive Director

steve.allen@cbiboca.org As the summer has zoomed by and unbelievably by the time High Holy Days have been completed I will have been your Executive Director for a year! I feel it’s been a good year, a learning year, a year of growth in membership, community, programming and an even stronger feeling of warmth and welcoming. A year of continued social action strength exhibited by CBI in the community, a year of partnership with many of the other important Jewish organizations in South Florida, a year where we were able to hear exceptional speakers and music, and a year of a successful integration of staff, lay leadership, led by our incredible President, Robin Siegal, and our temple community. I have had the opportunity to meet one on one with many congregants, getting to know them better as they get to know me and where I came from! There is no better way to build a community then through live interaction. We were able to discuss CBI in depth— problems, issues, compliments, suggestions, and things they would like to see in the future. We have an abundance of events planned for our Speaker Series. A detailed booklet will be available shortly. We have a combined menu of top world renowned speakers and top Jewish musical artists including the world famous, Matisyahu, on October 27th. Tickets are going fast already-order on line now! We have also tailored activities and events for all our many “groups” of members from young 20s to our Seniors, trips, lectures, entertainers, and fun events. We have listened to what you want and expect out of your Congregation. Our High Holy Days will be special again as our Clergy has been working hard preparing for the countless hours spent on the Bimah. This will be my 19th High Holy Day services experience in my career albeit my first at CBI. I can also say without hesitation that my staff is focused and prepared to make your experience at these services seamless and smooth. It is a great team! There have been numerous meetings over the summer paying attention to every detail, seeing what didn’t go perfectly in the past and addressing how we will handle any issues that might arise. During this time of reflection, forgiveness, and hope for the future in a world that has given us an incredible series of challenging events this past year, I urge all of you to spend time with your families, attend our Friday night inspiring services in addition to our High Holy Day services, and get to know your CBI community. As I wish all of you a L’shana Tovah, a sweet and peaceful new year from Debbie, Rachel and me, remember I am always available to meet with you and I encourage you to come in and let’s chat!

Israel OUR STRUGGLE FOR RELIGIOUS PLURALISM

A few months ago, we celebrated as the Israeli Government voted in favor of a historic compromise to create an egalitarian plaza at the Western Wall where all forms of Jewish observance would be recognized. Leaders in the ultra-Orthodox community have increased their opposition, blocking any further steps to create the new plaza, warning to “fight for the holiness of the Western Wall”. The Government of Israel has already voted to approve this plan, with support from the Reform Movement in Israel and in North America. Rabbi Gilad Kariv, President of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism - IMPJ, has threatened to take this issue to Israel’s Supreme Court if the plan is amended. It is vital that we, as American Progressive/Reform Jews, express our love for Israel in a way that cherishes our commitment to pluralism and a Western Wall that honors all forms of Jewish practice. We can help. Send Prime Minister Netanyahu an email and share with him our convictions and our deep disappointment and concerns. Keep in mind that the voice of Diaspora Jewry matters. Next month, when you receive your statement for CBI membership, please be sure to check the box for ARZA membership, as we continue to demonstrate our support for Reform Jewry in North America. Zoë Goldberg, Youth Engagement Professional Zoë was born in Memphis, TN and grew up in Orlando, FL. She went to Florida Atlantic University for her undergraduate degree, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Sociology, and became very active at Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach. Her involvement in Hillel encouraged her to pursue a career in the Jewish community. After graduation, she moved to Houston, Texas, where she began working as the Director of Undergraduate Engagement at Houston Hillel. In Houston, Zoë worked with college students from the University of Houston and Rice University, as well as the Jewish community as a whole. After two years in Houston, she decided that her next career path would be back in South Florida. She is very excited to take on this new role as the Youth Engagement Professional and looks forward to meeting all of our SLJ students and families. Zoë has been busy planning with BISY board. FALL 2016

Jayne Alexander Accounting Assistant Jayne Alexander is our new Billing Coordinator at CBI. She is a Boston native who has lived in South Florida for 20 years. A fun fact: she can recite just about every episode from her favorite TV show FRIENDS. Erin Rosado Graphic Designer Erin is CBI's lead Graphic Designer. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, where she met her husband, Jesus Rosado. She is the mother of Jacob, age 7 and Eva, age 5. EXCEPTIONAL CULTURE

by Design

Culture is a rich word, with many meanings. It can be a way of thinking and behaving that exists in a given place. It can be the act of developing the intellect through education. It can also be a refined taste in the arts and humanities. At Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, our culture is all of those things. From the social, recreational, and educational programs we offer, to our celebration of family through our affiliation with the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, everything we do is designed to create an exceptional culture that enriches all our lives.

Call (561) 922-7156 to learn more about the exceptional culture of Sinai Residences.
