Q: How long did it take Martin Freeman to shoot the three Hobbit movies? —Enrique G., Jersey City
A: Freeman, 42, filmed the Hobbit trilogy (the second installment, The Desolation of Smaug, is in theaters now) over the course of about two and a half years in New Zealand. “You do miss the comforts of home,” says the Englishman. But he can’t complain, given director Peter Jackson’s example: “His work ethic is second to none. He doesn’t appear [to think], ‘Enough already with Middle-Earth.’ ”

Everybody says, “You’re just like my mother.” Which is sort of frightening. I think there are a lot of controlling mothers. Are you like Carol? My mother was so uncritical that I guess I decided to be the opposite. How so? Oh, I could just shoot myself sometimes, thinking of the things I’ve said to my daughter. “Are you going to wear that?” “Does that match?” Silly, stupid stuff. What was it like working with Meryl Streep in August: Osage County? I’d love to take half the credit for our coming off as sisters [onscreen]. But that was all Meryl. She found ways to copy me.
