Icy Fire Fist Lab Background Information: In many types of athletic activities, athletes have to consider how they dress based on the activity they are put in. If the sport they are playing is hockey, they have to dress in warmer get up than that of basketball because the game is played in a colder environment. In games like basketball, they have to wear shorts and a jersey because it keeps them from getting too warm. Joggers have to be able to know what to dress in depending on the weather outside. Purpose: The purpose of the experiment is to show how temperature affects muscle performance. Hypothesis: Temperature will have an effect on muscle performance. Materials: ● Ice ● 1 Container large enough to hold the ice and a hand ● 1 Glove ● 1 Stopwatch Procedure: 1. Have the subject start with an open palm the contract the hand into a fist. Repeat the process as much as possible in 30 seconds. 2. Record data. 3. Place the subject’s hand in the container filled with ice for 2 minutes. 4. Have the subject repeat the test in step 1 and then record the new data 5. Have the subject place their hand inside a glove for 3 minutes. 6. Repeat the test in step 1, and record the new data. 7. Repeat steps 1-7 for two other people. Data Analysis: 1. What happened when the contractions were performed after the hand was placed in the ice? Why do you think this happened?

2. What happened to the subject’s muscle performance after their hand was placed in the glove? What does this show about muscle performance?

3. Do you think that this information from this experiment might help a jogger in his daily exercise? How might this help them in their daily exercise?
