What is Peer Pressure? Peer Pressure is a social pressure by members of one's peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted. BACKGROUND:

The purpose of this experiment is to explain and demonstrate the importance of refusal skills, and why influences of negative peer pressure and media should be avoided. OBJECTIVE:

Create an IF Then Statement explaining what will happen if your predictions are correct. HYPOTHESIS:

4 magnetic plates: 2 negative and 2 positive, 4 labels with scenarios on them for small magnets , 8 labels with good/bad refusal skills on them for small magnets, 12 small magnets: 6 positive and 6 negative, 4 labels for the plates MATERIALS:

PROCEDURE:

Part one:

1. Read through the qualities of good and bad skills first. 2. Write down predictions of whether you think each quality is good or bad in the table. 3. Then test your predictions by trying to attach each magnet to the plate you choose. 4. The plate that the magnet is attracted to is the correct answer 5. Record your results in the table 6. Then compare your results to your predictions, write down why you were right or wrong. Part two: 1. Read through the four scenarios of good and bad situations,

2. Predict whether you think the scenario will be true or false 3. Record your predictions in the table 4. Then test your predictions by placing each scenario on the board you predicted and see if it is attracted or repelled 5.The pad the magnet is attracted to is correct answer. 6. Record the correct answer in the table. 7. After you record the right answer, write why you think that is correct. Table: What do you think Which plate did it Why were you will happen? attach to? (True or right or wrong? What do you Which plate did it attach Why were you False?) think will happen? to? (Good or Bad Refusal right or wrong? Scenario Skills?) 1 Refusal Scenario Skill 1 2 Refusal Scenario Skill 2 3 Refusal Scenario Skill 3 4 Refusal Skill 4 Refusal Skill 5 Refusal Skill 6 Refusal Skill 7 Refusal Skill 8

Data Analysis-

1. After completing this lab why do you think is it important to know how to say no to bad influence? 2. How does the Media Portray negative peer pressure? 3. How can you avoid negative peer pressure in your everyday life? 4. What are some limits you can set to make sure that you are able to say no to bad peer pressure? CONCLUSIONS:

Write a conclusion about what you learned and how you can apply it in real life. Include the limits you set for yourself, and explain them. Also, pick which refusal skill you would most likely use and why.

Teachers Notes: HypothesisThe student’s hypothesis should be state that if they predict the correct result true or false, and good or bad refusal skills then the magnet will attach to the correct plate.

Procedure1. There are two parts of the experiment, for the first part take the good refusal skills label and attach it to the Positive Charged Plate (PCP) and take the bad refusal skills label and attach it to the Negative Charged Plate (NCP) 2. Take three of the qualities labels the ones for number 1, 3, 4 and put those labels on three positive magnets 3. Then take other five qualities label for number 2, 5,6,7,8 and put those labels on five negative magnets 4. Redo this procedure for each lab station 5. For part two of the experiment, you will need 1 PCP and 1 NCP 6. Label the PCP with “TRUE”. Label the NCP with “FALSE.” 7. Then take three of the scenarios numbers 1, 3, 4 and attach those scenarios all to positive magnets. 9. Then take the last scenario 2 number and attach that scenario to a negative magnet. ConclusionThe conclusion should state that every child will need to use refusal skills at some point, and the advantage to knowing good ways to say no. They should also state ways that they learned ways to say no, by using a

creative solution. Also stating the limits thy used to answer question 4 in the data analysis, and explain how they help. Example-After learning about refusal skills, I know how to say no and do the right thing. I learned that even know it might be cool to not do the right thing, being a good person is more important. If I were stuck in a bad situation, saying no and leaving is the best approach. In today’s experiment, I learned specifically how to say no. The refusal skill I would most likely use would be blank because blank.
