2 JCI Cambridge Newsletter President’s note

welcome

I’ve been extremely busy this month undertaking JCI duties both in Cambridge and for the UK committee! JCI Cambridge took seven members to Monte Carlo this month for the JCI European Conference. We had a great time at this amazing event – keep an eye out for the pictures on our Facebook page. I was also involved in securing £500 European funding for a training course we have in Sheffield in August called LEAP. Make sure you speak to us about this opportunity, it’s not to be missed! You have also been busy over the past few weeks volunteering! Your efforts helped raise thousands of pounds for Camtrust at the Cambridge Beer Festival and Mind in Cambridgeshire were delighted when you helped fix a vandalised polytunnel. Thank you to all the members who helped with these projects! I mentioned our mentoring programme earlier in the year - we are now ready to launch this in July and August over four sessions. This training is free to members keen to understand more about mentoring. I would encourage you all to get involved because it’s going to be a really beneficial initiative for all. What’s in a face?

Aaron Garner lets us in on some secrets! With 10 years’ experience in learning and development, Aaron Garner knows a thing or two about the human face. He couples his professional speaking experience with a passion for assisting others in developing their communication skills and emotional intelligence.

“Aaron identifies facial movements to assist in the evaluation of truth and lies” Aaron, director at Semita Veritas, works closely with Paul Ekman International, delivering its core trainings, “Evaluating Truthfulness and Credibility” and “Emotional Skills and Competencies”, in the UK and Internationally. Dr Paul Ekman was the scientific advisor on the FOX

TV drama “Lie To Me” and has studied emotions and deception for over 40 years.
In 2010, to reinforce his passion for observation of human behaviour, Aaron became a Certified FACS (Facial Action Coding System) Coder. FACS is a research tool that objectively measures facial muscle movement. Aaron utilises FACS for research purposes and the identification of facial movements to assist in the evaluation of truth or lies Join Aaron on 18 June from 18.30 at Eversheds, Kett House, 1 Station Road, Cambridge CB1 2JY. Aaron Garner puts JCI members in touch with their emotional intelligence

We score a birdy! John Bird, founder of the Big Issue magazine, gave a passionate talk about the importance of social maintenance for the most vulnerable in society at our May business seminar. (L-R) Jonathan Aspinall, Frank Whiffen, Ben Williams, Garin Rouch, Laura Wing & Naily Mak led the JCI Cambridge team to a fourth place position

Fourth place victory! Six JCI Cambridge members took to the water at Milton Country Park on Saturday 1 June to battle it out with nine other Cambridge businesses in the second Wacky Races competition in aid of the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. The JCI team navigated its way through the relay race collecting rubber ducks and inflatable animals on the lake in a closely fought contest.

Naily Mak, JCI team participant, said: “It was a great team building event and allowed me to test out my canoeing skills - we’re aiming to bring the cup home next year!”

John used his charisma and animated personality to give a gripping account of his own experiences living on the street and how he managed to progress from a inconsolable and desperate situation, giving a more credible narrative of the

strifes, stresses and difficulties faced by the most vulnerable. The main cause of concern for John was the opportunities that such people miss due to inappropriate funding mechanisms to give them a fresh start and hope of a sustainable future. Although there was a serious undertone to his seminar, he elevated his speech with vigorous expression, wit and humour to give the audience an enjoyable and inspiring evening.

We pledged to raise £500 for the hospice and we’re nearly half way there. If you’d like to help us reach our goal, please head to justgiving.com/jcicambridge. We’d really appreciate anything you can give! President James Mitchell with Big Issue founder John Bird

One small idea… one massive difference! JCI Cambridge is excited to welcome James Boon, founder of Elephant Branded, to speak to our members on July 16 from 18.30. It all started from a tiny seed of an idea. While studying architecture at the University of Bath, 23-year-old James Boon worked on a project to design and build a nursery in South Africa. “While studying, I got to design many things and make prototypes, but never got to actually build something, so I jumped at the chance to do this in South Africa,” says James. During his trip, he was exposed to the shocking levels of poverty and the lack of access to basic school equipment. “We had built an impressive building, but it was just a shell. There was nothing inside it that made it a school”.

The experience continued to plague James when he returned to the UK. Upon graduating, he jumped on a plane to China with no idea of what to expect. He spent the next year working in architecture in the Guangdong Province in Southern China.

He travelled extensively though Asia and visited Japan just a week after a horrific tsunami ripped many of the islands to shreds. Again James was dismayed by the lack of educational resources available for children.

Inspired to take action, James set about making lack of resources a thing of the past. His idea was simple. By purchasing an Elephant Branded bag, purse, wallet or satchel, the consumer will have inadvertently donated a school bag or piece of

MAKING WAVES WITH RETAILERS... Since its conception, Elephant Branded has been going down a storm with retailers in the UK and around the world. John Lewis was quick to snap up the sustainable products while German retailer FAB offered an incredible opportunity to break into Europe.

FAB is an international retailer that sells a huge range of different, fashionable and on-trend products. Its offering is enormous and continually evolves to feature some of the most innovative brands on the market.

Mental Health First Aid Course Are you interested in being trained to spot mental illness in others? JCI Cambridge aims to raise enough money in 2013 to send ten of our members on Mind in Cambridgeshire’s Mental Health First Aid course.

As part of our work with Mind in Cambridgeshire, we pledged to raise money in 2013 to fund a group of people from JCI to take the MiC Mental Health First Aid Course. Member of the month The first thing I do when I arrive at the office is check my emails to make sure there aren’t any big catastrophes that need to be mended. Then I usually continue work from the day before, start proofreading or translating.

Anna Soderbom Anna is a translator at Alpha CRC and recently attended the 2013 JCI European Conference in Monaco

Each language team has a coordinator and my coordinator sometimes lets me take over her responsibilities when she has time off or is too busy. When I am the language coordinator, it is my job to assess how much work we can do and if we can meet the deadlines suggested. The localisation industry is very big. There are international organisations such as the UN and the EU as well as

private companies that need translations for all sorts of things. Many people think of books and films when they think of translations but there

“What better way to join JCI than via a gala dinner?!” is an enormous amount of text that needs translating. For example, I might have translated something for the software in your smartphone (if you set it to Swedish, that is). I started my own company a couple of years ago. I translated, proofread and wrote articles for various clients. Even though it was scary not

having a solid income every month, it was rewarding to live on the work I did in my own company. I then got a job as a project manager at a Swedish translation agency. It was my turn to give assignments to other freelance translators and it was interesting to see how it worked on ‘the other side’. I joined JCI Cambridge in January this year, just in time for January’s gala dinner. I decided to join in style, and what better way to do it than a gala dinner? Most of all I value meeting new people. JCI members are very friendly and open to getting to know others, which I truly appreciate.

What is your role in the Charity?

I’m the marketing and events officer and have worked for the charity for four years. My role is diverse with every day bringing new opportunities and challenges. The charity holds five large events per year for

which I am responsible. You can find me devising a new route for an event or completing a risk assessment one day and busy setting up a venue, or arranging PR the next. I am continuously developing our new website and reviewing the marketing strategy for a variety of campaigns. I am also required to compile and write articles for our very popular newsletter, which forms a fantastic information tool and keeps our supporters up to date with the Hospice.

Greatest achievement in your career to date:

I would consider my greatest achievement not to be a single experience but a collection of activities in which I have engaged with groups and individuals to annually raise over £100,000 for

the charity. Our flagship events are always rewarding to organise and the people you meet along the way are very inspirational. I have also been heavily involved with the development of ARHC’s brand refresh. The charity is highly respected and it is imperative our image reflects the good work that is carried out by the hospice.

Biggest influence on you professionally

Numerous people have inspired me, many of whom I work with daily. From supporters with heart breaking stories that encourage me to work even harder, to seeing the aspirations of those I work with being realised.

Why have you joined JCI?

I am passionate about my role and I want to share

Tasha Auburn this with others. I am really looking forward to sharing my experiences and meeting new business associates and friends. In our sector it is very much about forming relationships and sharing knowledge, so I see JCI as being a fantastic tool to achieve this.

One of the main ways I have developed has been confidence-related. Through JCI, I have been given the tools to speak with conviction at networking events. Most recently I attended a very affordable presenter’s workshop, which was great for learning practical presentation techniques that I could put into practice in a non-judgemental environment.

I really value my JCI membership and I plan to continue making the most of it by attending more of the varied and interesting sessions, including the Leadership Excellence in Action Programme weekend later on in the year.
