2 JCI Cambridge Newsletter President’s note

welcome

What a busy month we’ve had here at JCI Cambridge! I met with next month’s speaker Peter Dawe, and within just 30 minutes he had equipped me with some very effective ideas for my business - which makes me very excited to welcome him to our April business seminar so he can share his wisdom with you too. JCI Cambridge exhibited at the Two Counties Exhibition in March, which was a great success. We met many proactive young people ready to make change in society and initiated a new relationship between JCI Cambridge and the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce as a result! I was part of the team that met with our charity of the year, Mind in Cambridgeshire, to fully understand the amazing work they do and what we can do to make a difference. Read more about our visit on pages four and five. I’ve also been busy recruiting new directors for our council team. Doug Stanton will join Kelly Tennick as cocommunity director working with Harriet Bastiani. We also welcome Howard Felstead as social director and Ben Williams as business director. We are on the look out for a training director to reinforce the team, so please do get in touch to find out more!

JCI news

Good to meet you! Picking up Engage for the first time

and wondering what this ‘JCI’ business is all about? Let us fill you in on what you’ve been missing … As we approach Spring, the team at JCI Cambridge thought April would be the perfect opportunity to remind you what JCI is all about - and why exactly you should get involved with some of the great opportunities we have on offer during 2013. Junior Chamber International (as it’s more formally known) is one of the biggest worldwide non-political organisations and has a global presence in more than 500 countries. JCI’s main aim is to provide development opportunities that empower people between the ages of 18 and 40 to create positive change. So what are we doing to champion this in Cambridge? Since the Cambridge arm

of JCI reignited in 2009, we have been providing development opportunities in the following areas: social, international, community, business and training. From our more relaxed socials where you can join us to catch the latest comedy shows or cookery classes to our business seminars where you can learn from some of the most respected industry leaders, JCI Cambridge offers opportunities for all. We also have huge plans for our community offering this year. Mind in Cambridgeshire is our chosen charity partner for the coming year and we have loads of opportunities for our members to get involved.

Interested in finding out more? We are holding a free ‘Passport to JCI’ event to help members and non-members find out how JCI Cambridge can help their development on 30 April from 18.30 at Eversheds, 1 Station Road, Cambridge CB1 2JY. Head to jcicambridge.org.uk/ events to book your place.

Difficult feedback made easier

Serial entrepreneur Peter Dawe will be joining JCI Cambridge on Tuesday 9 April from 18.30 to talk about his successes, failures and discoveries as a businessman.

Colin Chrebelski from Development Group International joined JCI Cambridge in March to advise on how to approach giving difficult feedback.

Being a serial entrepreneur is about taking calculated risks. Entrepreneurs, like gamblers, are very happy to talk about when they win.

Peter has founded more than 80 organisations over 30 years, pretty much covering the whole gamut of business sectors, from telecommunications, consumer electronics, media software and construction, to public policy, farming, manufacturing and consulting. He’s had his share of successes and failures and has valuable lessons and insights to share with JCI Cambridge. Peter joins us to talk about some of his more spectacular failures and the lessons he has learnt.

A captivated audience learnt about the pitfalls to avoid and useful phrases to use when giving any kind of feedback. Using the ‘SAID’ model for general feedback, Colin

coached the group through the best ways to give feedback to different sets of people depending on their personality type. Colin said that a lot of the time, people don’t know how to start having a difficult conversation with someone about something they’ve done. He gave us some important opening phrases to get started: • “I have some feedback which might be useful” • “I need to have a difficult conversation with you” • “I’m confused, can you help/explain...” • “I’d like to share something/a concern/a observation” We’d like to thank Colin for coming to speak to us, we look forward to welcoming him again soon.

JCI Cambridge pledges its support to Mind in Cambridgeshire in 2013! Co-community director Kelly Tennick and JCI Cambridge council members attended their first meeting with the chamber’s nominated charity of the year, Mind in Cambridgeshire (MiC), to discuss how they can help in 2013. Aly Anderson, business development manager at MiC, Sharon Cox, MiC chair and Garin Rouch, MiC vice chair and JCI Cambridge member, put on a fantastic evening to introduce the team to the charity. They took the time to give us an in-depth introduction to their role and their background - it was great to feel that we were really being ‘let in’ on the story of the charity and its people. Aly talked us through how JCI Cambridge could get involved and help promote better mental health throughout Cambridgeshire in 2013. We were surprised to learn that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in

any one year. That’s 150,000 people across Cambridgeshire each year! Not to mention that every week 104 people in the UK will take their own life staggering statistics for us to hear. It was very clear that the people behind MiC are truly passionate about the work they do, and they really do make a difference. The charity offers a whole range of services from counselling, support groups and wellbeing activities to one-to-one support and training on mental health for the workplace. MiC has every angle covered to make its services as accessible as possible - its

Mental Health First Aid course has even been commissioned to train NHS staff. It was great to hear that MiC currently helps over 600 local people through their recovery journey each year, and reaches over 1000 people with its wellbeing campaigns.

But with statistics so high, it’s clear that there is room for MiC to help even more people through promotion and awareness. This is why JCI Cambridge is so excited to be involved. We know that by helping to promote the charity and making more people aware of the issues around

Quick facts 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any one year – at least 150,000 people across Cambridgeshire Right now, 1 in 6 workers are experiencing depression, anxiety or stress

mental health and the services available to them, we can help MiC improve the lives of many more people. To achieve this, JCI Cambridge has planned several events for our members to get involved in throughout the year. Members will also have the chance to get directly involved with activities planned by the charity itself. We have also pledged to raise funds to pay for 30 participants onto the Mental Health First Aid course

to help spread awareness and information on mental health as widely as possible. An ‘Apprentice’ style challenge, a massage-athon and car washes to help fund members onto the Mental Health First Aid course have also been discussed, so stay tuned to see these ideas evolve! JCI Cambridge cannot achieve any of this without the support and engagement of our members, so if you are interested in being involved in

Mentoring scheme update

JCI Cambridge president James Mitchell and community director Harriet Bastiani met with the careers department at Anglia Ruskin University in March to moot ideas for JCI Cambridge’s very own mentoring project. Last year, a number of our members mentored students from the university and our chamber was awarded a certificate of merit for its work at JCI UK’s National Convention. Spurred on by this success, JCI Cambridge is currently working hard to create something bigger and better for 2013. Harriet Bastiani said: “We are busy preparing a mentoring training programme for our members to ensure they are

equipped with the mentoring skills needed to maximise the benefit of their experience to students. We want to create a legacy for the future and are actively encouraging our members to get involved.” The 2012 scheme saw mentors matched to students according to their career aspirations and their mentor’s skills. The members acted as business soundboards on a one-to-one basis providing

a voice of experience for students, imparting their business skills knowledge to help students make the transition to employment and the business environment. Most of the students mentored gained employment or work experience as a direct result of JCI participation. JCI Cambridge will be working closely with the university to develop a mentoring programme. We aim to

build on the enthusiasm shown by members when Jamie Dunn shared his successes with mentoring. Interested? Email president@ jcicambridge.org.uk

Member of the month

Garin Rouch Garin is director of Outstand, a leadership and organisation development consultancy. He has been a member of JCI Cambridge for nearly 4 years.

My day starts at 6.45am. After saying goodbye to my very understanding partner Karima, my first stop is my local coffee shop to check my emails and plan my meetings for the day. Everyone needs a place to think and mine is the coffee shop! There is something about a venti latte that triggers my brain’s ability to think clearly and come up with solutions to complex problems. I spend most of my time at my client’s sites. During the week, especially Monday to Thursday, I tend to be out of the office. Then on Friday, I’m busy planning for the following week. Being a consultant can be a nomadic

existence living life as the outsider in someone else’s office, with clients instead of colleagues and a laptop instead of a desk. However, I love the variety. For example, last week I was working with the managing director for an advertising firm in New York, as well as the chief executive of a charity in Cambridge. It can be very demanding when you challenge the status quo within an organisation; but it’s enormously rewarding when you create positive change. I’ve worked for lots of big companies in places such as Shanghai and Sydney but I’m really enjoying being back in the UK nearer my family and friends.

In the evenings I’m either at Mind in Cambridgeshire (MiC), or training for the London Marathon - I’m raising money for Mind in Cambridgeshire. I’m outside in all weathers! I really enjoy being involved with MiC. We are responsible for the strategic direction of the organisation. You get involved in lots of interesting projects and learn new skills. The positive impact that MiC has on people with mental health challenges means it’s incredibly powerful. I’ve been involved with JCI for almost four years now. I’ve really enjoyed watching it grow from just a few enthusiastic volunteers to a thriving group.

Role in business

I am a user experience specialist. I use a combination of research and design methodology to help design and build software products. Red Gate makes some really technical products. It’s my job to work with a whole bunch of very intelligent people to

make these otherwise complex products seem easy to use.

Greatest career achievement to date

My greatest achievement in my career was strangely when I decided to leave a pretty good job, move to a new country and take a year off to study. It’s been quite an experience to become a student again after five years of working but I absolutely loved it. I learnt so many new things, met some wonderful people. I didn’t mind doing all over again!

Biggest influence on you professionally It has to be my family. Both my parents and brother had

the opportunity to pursue the things they loved doing. It was wonderful to grow up with people who had a passion and weren’t scared to go after it.

Why have you joined JCI?

I found out about JCI through fellow member Jenny Willatt and came along to the Inspiration and Business skills weekend event thinking that I may learn something new. After two days of meeting a lot of new people and listening to some pretty useful and inspirational talks, I’m now drinking the JCI Kool-Aid. I am hoping to learn some new skills, meet some interesting people and have a blast while doing these things. It been going pretty well so far and I’m looking forward to a lot more.

In the short time I have been a member of JCI Cambridge, I have already noticed a change in me for the better. Too often are we afforded the option of coasting along our professional lives in relative comfort without remembering we need to be challenged. JCI Cambridge has reignited this in me through their vitality, determination, gregariousness, ambition and any other complementary noun you can think of! Progression both in terms of your business and personal development stagnates when

you only interact with the same circle. Meeting people from a range of industries and roles at JCI events not only means that I get to share great ideas, but they are often from a completely different perspective to that which I would usually encounter.
