Welcome to the 16th annual Tuned In: The Larry Dobkin Event!
This evening, we are honored to recognize Jill Bernstein and Shari Zenner for their steadfast dedication to supporting Response for Teens and guiding the next generation in making healthy life choices. Jill and Shari worked to launch Tuned In almost 20 years ago and have each served as past chairs of the Response Advisory Council (RAC).
For 50 years, Response for Teens, a part of JCFS Chicago's family of services, has pursued its mission to support our young people, ages 12 to 24, and their families in the Chicago Jewish and general communities by giving them the tools they need to make healthy decisions in all aspects of their lives.
Utilizing a holistic approach to healthy youth development, Response provides counseling services that support social-emotional well-being; outreach and prevention education programming which promotes wellness and healthy decision-making; and youth leadership development opportunities. Through its array of services and initiatives, Response serves thousands of adolescents, families, and professionals each year.
This work would not be possible without the Jewish United Fund/ Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s ongoing support. Also, a sincere thank you to JCFS Chicago staff for helping to ensure a flawless and successful Tuned In event year after year. Finally, thank you to the members of the RAC for their leadership and commitment to Response for Teens’ work with youth and families. Their efforts to serve as community ambassadors and assist with fundraising are exceptional! Thank you again for joining us tonight and for generously supporting Response for Teens.
Eve Samson Chair, Response Advisory Council
On behalf of the Response Advisory Council (RAC), we want to welcome all of you to our 16th annual Tuned In: The Larry Dobkin Event. We are so appreciative of you celebrating with us this evening!
We wouldn’t be here today without so many of you paving the way. Your leadership, support and advocacy has helped JCFS Chicago’s Response for Teens grow from a small office in West Rogers Park in 1972, to a beautiful new building on the Seigle Campus, in Skokie today. The work of Response for Teens is more important now than ever and your support has helped Response provide compassionate, adolescent-centered programs and services for thousands of young people in and around the Chicagoland area.
Tonight, we are thrilled to honor Jill Bernstein and Shari Zenner for their leadership and commitment to supporting young people in our community. Jill’s involvement with Jewish organizations that support children led her to join the Response Advisory Council 20 years ago, serving as chair of the RAC and the first chair of Tuned In. Shari’s commitment to the Jewish community led her to Response. Shari served as RAC chair, Snowball Mom and was queen of the ad book for Tuned In. We would like to congratulate Jill and Shari on this well-deserved honor. Mazel Tov!
Tuned In is the direct result of a hard-working committee. Thank you to the RAC members and JCFS staff who worked for months to make sure that every detail of our annual fundraiser is just right.
Mazel tov one and all as we come together for this special celebration.
Lauren Kugelman & Lori Shapiro 2023 Event Co-Chairs

David Lipschutz is trained and certified in child and adolescent psychotherapy from the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. David also completed his addiction certification at Gateway Youthcare Foundation with specialization in adolescent and emerging adult substance abuse. He has worked in various clinical settings throughout his career, ranging from in-patient adolescent treatment to community mental health clinics. His specialties include program development, clinical supervision, and integrative treatment programing for the youth and young adult population.
“Coming to Response has been one of the highlights of my career as a clinical social worker. Response’s reputation for high quality, comprehensive therapeutic service to youth and emerging adults has always been something I have admired from afar.
Now, I am gratefully part of this wonderful program!”

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR:
Tonight is a special occasion for Highland Park as the Jewish Child & Family Services (JCFS) Chicago honors two of our beloved residents, Shari Zenner and Jill Bernstein. Highland Park residents “live with heart and lead with passion.” Both Shari and Jill embody that spirit for their outstanding commitment and support of the work of JCFS Chicago’s Response for Teens and for so many years of service to our community.
In brief, Shari Zenner is a past Chair of the Response Advisory Council, Snowball Mom and was queen of the ad book for Tuned In Jill Bernstein joined the Response Advisory Council twenty years ago. She has served as RAC chair and was the first chair of Tuned In.
Because of Shari and Jill’s compassion and leadership, JCFS has been able to provide critical services and resources, helping teens to feel empowered and make healthy choices.

Dear Lauren and Lori:
Let me start by saying thank you to the entire Response for Teens team.
Thank you for helping teens to build resilience. Thank you for helping to empower them with the tools to make healthy, life-affirming choices. And thank you for helping to ensure that they get support from their greater Jewish family when they need it most.
Young adults have always faced tremendous pressures during the crucible of their teen years, but the pandemic intensified those challenges—making Response’s work to help young people build self-esteem, coping skills and resilience more important than ever. Our community is fortunate to have Response in our corner at this crucial moment in time. As we strive to meet the spiraling mental health needs among young adults, we are grateful to have such a dedicated, skilled group of professionals and lay leaders come together to serve them with so much energy and empathy.
Special thanks and mazel tov to honorees Shari Zenner and Jill Bernstein. Shari, your remarkable, longstanding commitment to the next generation has done your friend and mentor Larry Dobkin proud. Jill, your lifelong passion for protecting children is an inspiration. It is wonderful to see you both recognized tonight after all you have given to our community.
Thank you all so much for coming together for good.
Sincerely,
Lonnie Nasatir
We are thrilled to honor Shari Zenner for her longstanding commitment to Response for Teens. Shari’s dedication to the Jewish community led her to the JUF Young Women’s Board which introduced her to Response. After falling in love with the teens at Response, Shari served as Response Advisory Council chair, Snowball Mom and was queen of the ad book for Tuned In. Larry Dobkin was a treasured friend and mentor to Shari and his passion for teens continues to inspire her. Shari and her husband, Brad, live in Highland Park and own the contracting company Z Construction. Jason and Lauren, Morgan and Jake, Joey, and their grandson Zev, bring constant love and laughter into their lives.
We are pleased to honor Jill Bernstein for her ongoing involvement with Response for Teens. After getting her degree in social work, Jill worked as a probation officer in Juvenile Court. Her involvement with Jewish organizations that support children led her to join the Response Advisory Council (RAC) 20 years ago, serving as chair of the RAC and the first chair of Tuned In.
Today, Jill is an art consultant with Joy Horwich Gallery+2 and a volunteer in the Waukegan schools teaching art. She lives in Highland Park with her husband, Irwin. They share pride in their children, Scott and Carly, Dana and Joe, Mark, Michael and Adam and their four grandchildren.
This year, we are recognizing Shari Zenner and Jill Bernstein for their years of support for Response for Teens and their deep commitment to helping our next generation make healthy life choices.
