COMMUNITY

2023 Annual Report
Being part of a community gives us a sense of belonging, rooted in the obligation to care for others, as well as share the joy of success.
3

FROM OUR CEO AND CHAIRPERSON

Building community is a central driver to the work of JCFS Chicago and has been at the forefront of our growth. Last year, JCFS impacted 21,688 individuals across the Chicago area. JCFS brought critical support to 2,822 at-risk children and families. Partnerships with 116 organizations broadened our collective reach in the community.

Community starts with our own staff. We are committed to building a better workplace for our team. Together with our partners at Jewish United Fund, JCC Chicago and CJE SeniorLife and Service Employees International Union Local 73 (SEIU), we reached a collective bargaining agreement that includes better structures for collaboration as well as improved benefits for our staff.

Without a strong community JCFS could not foster inclusion and belonging for people with disabilities or provide multiple pathways for people to improve their mental health. We are proud that 95% of our clients with mental health challenges reported increased connections to others, strengthening their contribution to our community. Our clinical team focused on solutions-based tools and improving our processes, which resulted in no wait time for most people needing counseling, including those who rely on Medicaid. Community engagement allowed us to help over 200 refugees from more than 10 countries start a new life here in Chicago. Creating programs, building relationships, and offering support groups has helped to create a stronger, more resilient social fabric.

This year we also launched the Kaufman Wolf Center for Trauma and Resilience. In addition to providing direct care for those impacted by trauma, the new center is focused on strengthening our community before crisis strikes. We extended our expertise to the wider community, presenting at national conferences on topics from engagement of the Orthodox community, marketing strategy, inclusion of children with special needs, and more. In Washington DC, we showcased a model for expanding access to mental health services through faith communities.

People coming together to help each other is the best way to strengthen a community. Thanks to our board of directors, partners at the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, donors, volunteers, and staff we raised needed funds, grew strategically, and met the needs of our clients. The more strongly we are woven together, the better we are able to address the growing needs of our neighbors.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS

JCFS Chicago provides comprehensive mental health and support services to strengthen its impact on the community. With counseling available in communitybased locations, schools, synagogues, and by telehealth, resources and mental health services are accessible to many.

“Strong community is the essence of our work and is rooted in the experience of collaboration between professionals, families, and individuals. All three branches of this interdependent community thrive together in health and growth,” says Response for Teens Director, David Lipschutz.

The Response for Teens outreach team works with both public and private schools, collaborating with counseling departments to develop creative programming focused on the well-being of the students. In addition, several local schools have a JCFS clinician available on a regular basis so students can drop in if they need to talk with someone. The same goes for our Virginia Frank Child Development Center experts who work with synagogues and early childhood programs to bring mental health professionals directly into the community.

With deep connections in the community, our professional staff of licensed clinical social workers, counselors, and

psychologists specialize in therapeutic services that enhance the emotional well-being of children, adults, and families. Drawing on their own values, they bring a personal perspective to their work.

Dr. Alysa Slay, Senior Director, Outpatient Behavioral Health/ Director, Psychological Services, explains, “Community is the way that I express my Jewish identity and values. From Jewish summer camp to Jewish youth group, and now as an adult professional working for an agency that serves the Jewish community, the importance of teamwork, creativity, and leadership have been constants that influence my work.”

For David Lipschutz, “Community is the bedrock of our programming. Without the support of colleagues, supervisors, and our funders, we could not provide the high-quality treatment to people who need our help."

6

The recent launch of the Kaufman Wolf Center for Trauma and Resilience acknowledges the importance of addressing trauma and resilience in the community by offering services focused on preventing those who have been exposed to trauma from developing more significant mental health issues and providing care to treat those who are facing the residual effects.

JCFS is committed to supporting communities by providing multiple pathways for people to improve their mental health and take care of their whole selves. Our reputable services and long-term relationships in community settings make us a trusted partner to lift every neighbor.

STRENGTHENING OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY

“Our community is diverse and has many different types of needs,” said Ann Luban, Senior Director of Jewish Community Services at JCFS Chicago. From children to older adults and everyone in between; from child abuse prevention and mental health, to addiction, parenting, adoption, and grief and loss, across the denominational spectrum. While the primary focus is to serve the Jewish community in the greater Chicago area, the work of JCFS’s community services touches people far and wide.

“It’s about anticipating needs, listening and hearing about what’s going on in the community every day, and sometimes it is reading between the lines,” said Elizabeth Ury, Director of Jewish Community Engagement. “We connect people to whatever help they need—whether it be through another JCFS program or one of our community partners.” For

example, with the rise in opioid overdoses due to fentanyl poisoning, the community services staff recognized the urgent need for education and prevention training. JCFS partners with Live4Lali, a local non-profit, to provide lifesaving overdose reversal (Narcan) training for professionals and community members, with impactful results. Someone who attended a recent training used what they learned to save a friend from an overdose.

“One of our goals is to build the capacity of professionals so they can support individuals and families in the broader community,” Ann explains.

Community services staff work closely with synagogues, day schools, camps, and other Jewish organizations to serve as a social services resource and provide educational programs, mental health and grief support, professional training, and consultations, all through a Jewish lens. In addition, JCFS’s chaplains provide spiritual support to community members living at home and in residential facilities.

8

“All that we do in community services—creating and presenting programs, building relationships, offering support groups—is about working towards keeping the Jewish community healthy and safe,” adds Elizabeth. “We educate people, so they feel comfortable learning together and having the same language about important topics.”

Regular communication and being consistent, authentic and responsive is essential to building trust. “A strong community benefits everyone,” states Elizabeth, “and it is our role to strengthen our community.”

9

CREATING COMMUNITY

Each month JCFS Chicago’s disability services staff meets to discuss a topic as it relates to “creating community.” Marlies Gramann, Vice President of Disability Services and Chief Program Officer says, “It’s our favorite day of the month.” Tammy Besser, LCSW Clinical Supervisor, determines the direction and sequence of topics that build on one another, presenting ways to strengthen the community through organic conversations and interactions. This lends itself to a natural modeling of inclusion and the concepts of belonging.

The work of JCFS helps expand communities to include more diverse people—children and adults with intellectual/ developmental disabilities and their parents, siblings, disability advocates, professionals, and religious clergy.

The JCFS services that benefit communities include education for professionals, individuals with disabilities and people with a family member who has a disability; faithbased inclusion, and parent ‘lunch and learns’ in partnership

with JCC Chicago. Marlies also participates in the JUF/ Encompass peer conversations and training about disability inclusion and ways to help people make new friends outside their social circle.

“However, the real work is within the rhythms and rituals of everyday life,” said Marlies. For example, you might be at a coffee shop with your friend who has a disability, and by talking with that person, having natural interactions, builds trust in the community.

“Relationships need to be positive, trusting, and longterm, but they also need to be reciprocal. The community needs to want contributions from their members. Otherwise, we are only helping people to be tolerant and not truly respectful. You really belong somewhere when you contribute,” adds Marlies. “Our job is to help people understand the value individuals with disabilities bring to the community.”

The residents JCFS supports who live in community integrated living homes have found their place in the community. Bradley plays the piano at an assisted living

10

home. Jonathan works at Chicago Jewish Funerals supporting staff during services. Rebecca has a job stocking shelves at HomeGoods. Christopher and Danny are janitors.

Often, the community influences program development. This summer JCFS Integrated Pediatric Therapies offered intensive skill building sessions using a camp model. This provided an opportunity for children with and without

disabilities to interact together in a learning environment. Soon, JCFS will be offering new dating and social skills groups for adults with disabilities. These are just a few examples of how JCFS builds on the needs of the community to help children and adults make meaningful contributions where they live, work, play, and worship.

TYING PHILANTHROPY AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Depending on who you ask, community can be defined in many ways—people within a geographic area, a group with something in common, or the circumstances within which people live. For JCFS Chicago, community has many meanings.

For those that engage with our donors, volunteers, and lay leaders, they do far more than raise funds to support our mission. “We bring people together to help create a stronger, more resilient social fabric,” says Judd Holzman, JCFS Chief Development Officer. “We serve as JCFS ambassadors in the community, making connections to services, other organizations and each other.”

12

It’s easy to think of fundraising only in terms of seeking financial resources. But a sense of responsibility for others, that bond in providing what we collectively need to live a good life, is an aspect that ties philanthropy and community together. This unity not only supports those in immediate need but also fosters a sense of belonging and security for everyone in the community.

Sharing a commitment to a common cause inspires donors and volunteers to give their time, resources, and expertise for the good of everyone. From the holiday gift drive and project winter warmth to mentors for refugees and mock interviews for JVS clients, volunteers help ensure the community is strong. Holzman goes on to say, “Nurturing the relationship between volunteers and the people we help deepens their engagement with JCFS.”

Many of our Board members and other lay leaders who share a passion for the agency have personal experiences with JCFS, giving them a unique perspective to provide insight into the organization's direction. To accomplish our mission, this group of insightful community leaders’ vision, passion and tenacity help guide our organization, ensuring it aligns with the evolving needs of the community.

Building community is a big part of the Jewish United Fund/ Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago (JUF) mission and as a beneficiary of their campaign, JCFS serves as their hub for providing social services in the community. We work with their program experts to determine need, to connect with partner organizations, and provide critical funding, making JUF a strategic partner in providing much-needed mental health, disability, and emotional support services.

The support from our Board members, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations fosters a sense of unity and belonging, helping JCFS thrive and ensuring the community's well-being for years to come.

13

ENDOWMENTS

The JCFS Chicago Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Agency Endowment Program, which was established to ensure that JCFS and our sister agencies have the necessary resources to meet the community needs. All commitments to Agency Endowment Foundations are recognized as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign. We are grateful for all donations. Endowment gifts received this year and legacy gifts of $10,000 or more are listed.
