As I thought about Dr. Rabi’s story, I wondered what it would be like to be introspective by focusing on questions, not answers. This should come naturally since we often joke how Jewish people always answer a question with a question. But so often in my position, staff and members come to me for answers. My default becomes listen and answer, listen and answer. As I was thinking about what kind of questions to ask myself, I ran into a friend while exercising in the fitness center on the Sunday morning between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. His tee shirt called to me. On the front it said, “Ask Big Questions” and on the back it said, “Understand Others. Understand Yourself.” (Ask Big Questions is a Hillel International initiative to bring college students together in conversation.) What are big questions and how do they differ from little questions? I created my own construct by defining my “big” questions as “why” and “what” questions, and “little” questions as “how” and “when” questions. All are important but very different and I want to share the questions I’ve been thinking about concerning the Center.
There are many important “little” questions as well. Many of these come directly from members and participants when they submit “Dear Michael” cards. Not only are there questions, but many cards provide helpful ideas and answers. Two questions that I’ve been thinking about are: “How do we best get the word out about our programs?” And, “How can we exceed the expectations of our participants?” Later this month, we will ask you many important big and little questions when we conduct our benchmarking participant survey. For our board, our staff and me, benchmarking is the basis of organizational self-reflection and contemplation. We last surveyed all of our participants two years ago. This is an opportunity for the Center to learn whether we’ve made progress in how you view the quality of our programs. I implore you to participate by completing the survey when you receive it. We take the results very seriously and view them as our report card. We make key decisions on priorities and resource allocation based on your feedback. Your answers are the input that will lead to new questions. And the cycle will start again.

But the joy of the Jewish holidays always provides some grounding family time amidst the craziness. I get to appreciate the holidays from a slightly different vantage point each year, depending on when they fall. Regardless of the timing, these days give us the ability to stop, reflect and be grateful. This year, I am particularly grateful for our entire community.

jewish family living & learning Connecting to Israel By Danielle Flicker, JCCGW Shlicha Israel-centric education and activities. Please feel comfortable in reaching out to me so that together, we can make my time here as beneficial and worthwhile for you and your families as I know it can be. In addition to the activities with the JCCGW, every Sunday I will also serve as the troop leader of the Israeli Scouts Troop, Gilad. Amit Levinson (left), who served as the JCCGW emissary from Israel for the past two years, recently passed the torch to Danielle Flicker (right).
I am honored to join the community as the new JCCGW shlicha (emissary) from Israel. What a wonderful opportunity for us to share ideas, stories and simchas (joyous times) while strengthening the bond between our countries and communities! My role as shlicha is to help create interesting and interactive programming and expand
I am 22 years old and originally from Kfar Yona, a small town next to Netanya, Israel. In my formative years, I was involved with the Israeli Scouts and took part in delegations to several states across the United States. Three years ago, I represented my country as a young emissary in Cincinnati, Ohio where I lived for a year, developed programs and met thousands of people of all ages in an effort to help make Israel less of a distant country or ideal and more realistic and accessible.
Mindfulness
During my subsequent IDF service, I was given a commission in the Education Force and spent two years in the most beautiful place in Israel ─ Jerusalem. My responsibilities were to educate the IDF soldiers, lead weekly tours of various important sites and to expand their knowledge of our country and the world by educating the soldiers through Jerusalem’s rich history and social diversity. Our tours often lead to thought-provoking and deep discussions of their role as soldiers and their important missions. I very much look forward to meeting you all, sharing our passion for our respective home countries, and sharing the special stories of people we have met along the way.
