The Institute & Awards Is your JCC striving to achieve excellence? Are you working to create a truly effective board? Are your future leaders ready to step into key leadership roles? The JCC Association Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leadership Institute & Awards is designed to help your future leaders understand what exceptional leadership really means, and to appreciate that leadership is intentional and learned. Emerging JCC Leaders have the responsibility to bring their JCCs into the future. JCC Association is dedicated to assuring that JCCs have the best, most committed, and well-trained leaders—in other words, exceptional! Now is your chance to help prepare them and simultaneously, to honor them. Nominate your future leader(s) to this dynamic leadership institute and reinforce how important it is to your JCC to develop well-trained leaders. This JCC Association premier leadership training program is named in honor of JCC Association Honorary Chair Esther Leah Ritz, who passed away in 2003. As an active leader in Milwaukee and in continental and international arenas, Esther Leah was a visionary who led with great distinction. In addition to holding the presidency of the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC of Milwaukee, she served as president of JWB, the forerunner of JCC Association, took on the presidency of the JCC Association-Florence G. Heller Research Center, and chaired the World Confederation of JCCs. She was the recipient of one of JCC Association’s highest honors, the Community Builders Award. The prestigious Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leadership Institute & Awards is the ideal commemoration of a woman who exemplified the noblest tradition of communal leadership.

The Program Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leadership Institute & Awards will be held at the JCCs of North America Biennial in San Diego, March 28-April 1, 2014. This institute is designed to assist your emerging leaders in enhancing the skills needed to assume top leadership in your JCC. Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leaders are crucial to the JCC Movement, and the Biennial is considered a starting point in a long-term relationship among the future leaders of the movement. The dedicated program for the Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leaders begins on Friday afternoon, March 28, and continues through Monday afternoon, March 31, with ample time to attend the overall Biennial sessions. Awardees should plan to arrive in San Diego in time for the Friday afternoon program. All programs take place at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2014 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Welcome Program and Introduction 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. Interactive Introduction to Shabbat, JCC Style 6:45 – 9:30 p.m. Candle lighting, Kabbalat Shabbat & Shabbat Dinner with Biennial delegates SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2014 Morning: Opportunities for a variety of Shabbat experiences with Biennial 11:00 a.m – 4:00 p.m. Lunch and Seminars: JCCs Build Excellent Leaders, Leaders Build Strong Communities What does it mean to be a Jewish leader? How is leadership in a JCC different than leadership elsewhere? Today’s sessions will include interactive opportunities to learn with the Biennial’s scholar-inresidence, several top leaders in the JCC Movement and creatively build your own model of leadership in your JCC.


SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2014 12:45 – 3:45 p.m. Lunch and Seminar: Building and Enhancing your Leadership Skills What are the top 10 competencies needed to be a JCC leader? How do we balance competing demands as leaders of our JCCs? This session focuses on leadership skills and will help us cultivate those that will help our JCCs thrive. MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2014 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Biennial plenary We encourage all members of your delegation to attend this plenary where the Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leaders will be honored. 12:45 – 2:30 p.m. Lunch Seminar with JCC Executive Directors: Where Do We Go From Here? Taking it back to your JCC—how can you now make an impact? What is your defined responsibility upon returning home? TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2014 Spend the day—and other non-designated times— attending Biennial seminars and events. This series of events offers a great opportunity for award winners to develop relationships with other Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leaders, and participate in the full Biennial Convention.

Nomination Criteria Please review the criteria and related information below before nominating leaders from your JCC. 1.

4. Candidate should recognize and support the JCC’s responsibility to provide meaningful, well-targeted Jewish education for its lay leadership, staff, and constituents. 5. Candidate and executive director agree to work together for the awardee to take on a new defined responsibility upon returning to the JCC from the Biennial. This leadership responsibility can be whatever makes sense for each individual JCC and leader. 6. Award is limited to two recipients per JCC or central board, and one per branch board. JCC Association must approve additional awards. 7. The awardees must attend the Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leadership Institute at the Biennial to receive the award. 8. Only Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHAs affiliated, and in good standing, with JCC Association are eligible to enter.

Funding We strongly recommend that the local award include the payment of the recipient’s expenses to the Biennial Convention in San Diego. Here are a variety of suggestions as to how the Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leaders Award might be financed in your community: 1.

The development of a special donors’ fund

2. A group of past presidents developing a President’s Fund for this purpose 3. Endowment of the project by an individual family and/ or foundation 4. A special fund named for an outstanding community leader to commemorate or pay tribute to the person’s community contributions

Candidate should have at least three years of effective service on a Jewish Community Center board or committee. The candidate may not be a current president or become president of a JCC through May 2015.

Candidate’s bio: Please include a 50-word bio that includes previous positions at the JCC, involvement with federation, synagogue/temple or other Jewish organizations, general community involvement, occupation, business/professional activities, special interests and hobbies. To be eligible for the award, the recipient must attend the Esther Leah Ritz Emerging JCC Leadership Institute at the JCCs of North America Biennial in San Diego, March 28- April 1, 2014 and meet all of the nomination criteria.

Applications and Biennial registration must be submitted electronically or postmarked by December 1, 2013. Once we receive registration and payment, we will send the awardee acknowledgement from JCC Association and information about participation. AWARDEES WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL BIENNIAL REGISTRATION IS RECEIVED.
