Organization Information Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya

(1) History Multimedia University (Cyberjaya) Wushu Club was formed by the EXCO committee lead by Mr. Yap Mun Yow in May 2000. In the early stages, MMU (Cyberjaya) Wushu Club invited the Malaysia Wushu Organization to send an instructor to conduct the club’s Wushu trainings. When the new committees took over the club the following year, they approached the Chinwoo Athletic Association (Selangor and Kuala Lumpur) and invited their Assistant Martial Art Instructor Mr. Yong Kiat Bin to take over the club’s Wushu class. Leading the training sessions for two years, the members mastered many Wushu basics, including patterns such as Tan Tui, and weapon training. Apart from that, members of the club also participated in a number of performances. In 2001, Mr. Woo Chee Heong from the Chinwoo Athletic Association took over as the club’s instructor and the club experienced a different style of training from the previous years. From this point forth, the club advanced into another level where non-Chinese students joined the club. The club also catered Yang-style Tai Chi classes for those who are interested. Since then, MMU (Cyberjaya) Wushu Club had matured even more not only in training and performing, but also as a club itself.

Organization Information (3) About Wushu

Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya

Wushu is considered a difficult sport it is a type of martial arts with a lot of categories, such as routines and weapons. Its style is also more performance arts, and requires the athlete to perform actions like leaps, jumps and high kicks. To learn Wushu, the person has to be physically and mentally strong and have an interest in learning the art. That person should also have a background in sports, as he/she needs to be very flexible and agile when performing the actions. There is no age limit to learning Wushu. Anyone of any age can learn Wushu, if it is for leisure or interest purposes. But if a person were to practice Wushu competitively, he/she should start lessons at the age of 6. A typical Wushu student is disciplined, has a good behavior and has a healthy body so as to be able to accept any challenges (physically). In addition, he/she should be mentally fit, to be able to differentiate between good and bad, and be morally upright.

Shaolin:

Tai-Chi:

Long Fist includes both Shaolin fist and weapons (Bingqi) such as sword, spear, staff, and saber. Other weapons, often known as "soft weapons" include the sectional whip chain (7 or 9 sections) and the rope dart. Long Fist is the foundation for all of the traditional styles of external Wushu. These styles include monkey, tiger, snake, mantis, and eagle claw styles and so forth. Traditional fist, on the other hand, emphasizes the fighting techniques of one style.

Tai-Chi, unlike external kungfu, is based upon unifying the chi or energy of the body. While the internal power generated can be used as a primary tool for self defense, most Tai Chi practitioners focus on the health benefits the art provides. Another internal Wushu style is Baguaquan.

Testimonials Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya

Club plays a very important role for the students in university. As in many martial art club, wushu club gives student the opportunity to exercise and stay healthy besides teaching them the art of self defence. Not only that it also has an element of culture in it which gives it an extra edge over other martial art clubs.

Ng Lynn-Sze Advisor of Wushu Club Around the year 2000 or 2001,i took over MMU wushu club from Mr Yong (my ex-colleague of chinwoo KL). At the beginning, the students could not adept to the teaching style of mine. But as time goes by, they start to get a hold of my teaching and club management style. I remember, during that time, the chinwoo president once told me that university student can not have any result neither can they be train for competition. In order to prove him wrong, i trained all the seniors that can represent chinwoo for competition and brought MMU wushu club student to help chinwoo build up the chinwoo website as a contribution to the wushu community. But time passed and the passion of the students and teenages towards wushu is dying. Most of the young peoples nowadays do not possess the passion to train wushu and they can't endure tough training. Many of them also prefer to join clubs full with girl members or attend activities that are less stressfull.

Master Woo/Ken Woo (Main) Instructor of Shaolin Class

Not only that, they also lack of self motivation and did not try hard enough to obtain and appreciate the chances that is available to them as they did not know how hard it is to come across these chances.

Testimonials Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya

Wushu club members hv the passion and spirit on wushu training, and they are really committed to the club!

Lee Chui Ai President of Wushu Club 2007/08

well honestly... it has missed the true essence. This is the same reason why many people have left year after year its in the nature of Wushu.ppl get bored of performance its like this month after month, year after year... Master Woo said we must promote wushu... and the only way to promote, is by doing performance in the end, we spend the whole year for one thing only – performances. Despite all this, the one thing that i feel as my greatest challenge is to bring everyone together cause when we all gather and talk or chit-chat some people are left out mainly due to the difference in language. So when i took over,we changed the teaching style to English but of cause it is still not easy. During that time, our first president - Gan Chun yee came and told us that it is a good thing to have different races and internationals in our club as it reflects that we are united, and we are not just a chinese club. But wushu is for all no matter who you are, what is your race or where u are from. But the main thing for now i feel, nowadays people want to look for something 'cool' and most of them didn't find it in wushu, so they left. Modern days youngsters want to learn how to fight unlike the old batches where people are more patient. Nowadays, most people wanted something 'instant',something that is fast, easy, and 'Cool'.So they join other martial art classes. Always remember, peopl will join if they can get something from it,something that they want, who cares about Wushu culture, They join because they want to learn. Learn what ? - how to fight, and defend themself.

Testimonials Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya Since childhood, I’m keeping on seeking for he opportunity to learn Wushu. I found the golden chance at Wushu Club Malacca Campus after I entered MMU Malacca campus for my foundation/alpha of study. One year, I stayed at Wushu Club Malacca Campus, and I learned a lots, from traditional routines to management of the organization. I’m really appreciated everything seniors share with me. Without their kindness, I wouldn’t bring myself to another level after I shifted to MMU Cyberjaya for degree level of study. I stay at Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya for 2 years, from Vice President, to the President currently. Here, the culture is different compare to Malacca campus; I need to be more independence and more self-motivation to push up myself. By the way, with the spirit and passion from all members, even instructor themselves and advisor, we managed to turn the critical level to better environment, which makes the organization more organized and great team-work shown.

Jay Chong Yen Jye President of Wushu Club MMU Cyberjaya 2008/09 @Editor of Annual Report 2008/09

I spent one whole year to reinforce the committee board and the organization structure. Although it is not a obvious changed this year, but I believe the committees next year can follow up the track that I’m building without any big barrier and everyone can see the result. Last but not least, I must especially thanks to Lee Chui Ai for guide me and trust me to elect me as President after her. Besides that, I would like to thanks to whole committee board, without them, I’m nothing. I would like to apologized if I done any mistakes during this 2 years. Cheers, Jay Chong
