NWU Vaal takes robotics beyond science class VANDERBIJLPARK. - If the excitement of the South African rendition of Robofest 2017 was anything to go by, the stage is set for a stellar international championship in June. On Saturday, March 4, the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal) hosted the South African National Robofest 2017 Championship in collaboration with Trophy Robotics. This year’s rendition of the championship served as a qualifier for the international competition to take place in June in Florida, USA. More than 50 learners from schools across central South Africa took part in Robofest SA and according to Ms Malie Zeeman, a lecturer in the School of Information Technology and a member of the organising committee, it is encouraging to see youngsters busying themselves with robotics. “The main aim of an initiative such as Robofest is to encourage learners to embrace science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM as it is more commonly referred to,” explains Zeeman and adds that Robofest SA provides an ideal platform from where the principles of physical science, computer programming skills, technology, applied mathematics and communication technologies can be taught. During the course of the event learners design, construct and program their own robots – be it as individual participants or as a team. The championship catered for three age groups, namely: Grade 4 – 8, Grade 9 – 12 and, the advanced VCC division (Vision Centric Challenge) for high school learners and university students. Robofest 2017 saw individuals, schools and teams taking part in the following categories: Gameplay, Exhibitions and Vision Centric Challenge. event that the winners of the different categories will see themselves representing their country in June when the international championships take place in the United States. In another exciting development, the international organising body also extended two invitations to South Africa to take part in the so-called World Championship for BottleSumo. This invitation is extended to middle and high school
learners. This will be the first time that a South African team will take part in this robotic category. In preparation for this, Pretorius will host two workshops – on March 18 and 25, during which he will not only teach learners the necessary skills for this category, but also ultimately select the two teams that will represent South Africa. The Robofest concept has taken the
world by storm since its inception in 2000 and over 16 000 learners have competed in Robofest over the past 15 years – including teams from 13 US States, England, Canada, China, France India, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Singapore, and South Africa. * This year marks the third time that the North-West University hosted this prestigious event.

VEREENIGING. - The Vaal Highland Festival and Gathering has become one of the largest annual events of its kind in the Vaal area and is held at Dick Fourie Stadium in Vereeniging on March 31 and April 1 this year. The events highlighted for this year are: Friday March 31: 14:00 – 22:00 Special stage event of South African singers such as Jason, Bruno, Stephen Marx, Rene Reichert, Kwaggabees and Juan Boucher. Saturday April 1; 09:00 to 16:30 Scottish Pipe Bands, Scottish Dancing, Medieval Sword Fighting. 17:00 to 22:00 South African singers including Mona-Lee, Vernon Muso, Sean Miles, Faz & the Firecrackers, Janet and The Helicopters. The pipe bands that played last year were a great success and the organisers are expecting a much larger contingent of pipe bands and Scottish dancers this year. There will be 12 pipe bands in this regional competition with over 100 pipers and drummers for the mass bands. Apart from the bag pipe bands, Highland dancing and
Medieval sword fighting, there will be numerous types of food and refreshment stalls from a taste of Scotland - black pudding, haggis and Scotch eggs, to bacon, boerewors rolls, jaffels and prego rolls, numerous arts and craft stalls, a beer garden, live music bands, whisky and wine tasting. For the children there will be a large display from rainbow inflatables and a large fairground on both days. Tydens die onlangse Sedibeng Karate-kampioenskappe het nie minder nie as 10 van Vaal Karateklub se studente die Sedibeng-karatespan gehaal. Armand Viljoen, een van die klub se studente, het ook deurgedring na die Gautengkaratespan, waar hy die klub op 3 en 4 Maart by die nasionale Karate-kampioenskappe in Durban verteenwoordig het. Dit is voorwaar ‘n uitsonderlike prestasie vir Armand sowel as vir die klub as in ag geneem word dat die klub slegs een jaar oud is. Volgens die nuutste syfers is Vaal Karateklub ook die plaaslike klub met die meeste geaffilieerde studente by Sedibeng-karate, en is ook geaffilieer by Karate Suid-

The Emfuleni MMC for Health and Social Development Coun cillor Sengoatsi hands a full school uniform to Refiloe Khan ye (11) Grade 6. The MMC was working together with the provincial social development to distribute school uniforms to the Radipeu Primary School, near Westside Park, in Ward 25. The distribution was conducted on March 8. The reason they donated 250 uniforms to this school is because there are not that many children and they were able to provide uniforms for all of them. The war is on to neuter cats VEREENIGING. - A Three Rivers Vet in Vereeniging has declared war on all un-neutered cats in the community. From April 1 to June 30 they will be running a special on neutering cats. Neutering: Male/Tom cats will be castrated only. The price for these castrations will be R395 for this period of time. Any male cat from 6 months will be eligible for this discount. Those interested can phone (016) 4231104/5 to make an appointment. The practice is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00. Why is it necessary to neuter your cat? It has been proven that cats that have been neutered live longer and have a better quality of life. There is no more roaming around, cat fights or spraying on your furniture. Cats that roam and fight are also prone to diseases like feline Aids and leukaemia. Once your cat has contracted these diseases he will spread it around and it is an assured prolonged death wish. In the past few years the cat population has exploded with many feral cats roaming the streets. This is a sad existence as they breed indiscriminately, die from starvation and are subjected to torture and cruelty. Your unneutered house cat is probably the father of approximately 57 602 felines born in 10 years. These figures have been proven and they are
so immense it actually boggles the mind. Feral cats live in the cold with no permanent source of food or water. They have their babies in unsafe places and these kittens start roaming as soon as they are six weeks old due to the fact that mom is always out sourcing food somewhere. If the mom gets hit by a car, the kittens die of starvation, a slow and cruel death. If they get sick or hurt there is no assistance, they either cope or die. As

Die Gauteng Laerskole Atletiekkampioenskappe is onlangs in die Pitditch-stadion gehou en die plaaslike atlete het hul teenwoordigheid laat geld. Vaaldriehoek is deur twee streke verteenwoordig (Sedibeng-Oos en Sedibeng-Wes). Sedibeng-Oos bestaan uit Heidelberg, Meyerton, Vereeniging en omliggende skole. Sedibeng-Wes bestaan uit Vanderbijlpark en omliggende skole. Sedibeng-Oos het in totaal 14 medaljes (4 goud, 4 silwer en 6 brons) verower en Sedibeng-Wes ses (1 goud, 2 silwer
