7 Welkom in mijn stad!

Welcome to my city!

In Den Haag voel ik een sterke geborgenheid, want ik ben in de stad geboren, ken de stad goed en voel mij dus een echte Hagenees. Den Haag is een hele relaxte stad waar je alles met de fiets kan doen. Je hebt hier echt alles: het strand, de duinen en natuurlijk de gezellige binnenstad. Ik vind het heerlijk dat Den Haag zo'n groene stad is, met veel parken en bossen. Als kind was ik altijd in park Clingendael te vinden om te spelen, paaseieren te zoeken en te schaatsen. Ik ben opgegroeid in het Benoordenhout, dus vlak bij de duinen. Inmiddels woon ik niet meer in Den Haag, maar de stad zit nog diep in mijn hart. Stiekem zou ik ooit nog wel terug willen verhuizen. Want Amsterdam is leuk, maar Den Haag blijft toch mijn stad.

When I am in The Hague I have a strong sense of warmth and security. This is the city in which I was born, I know the city well and I feel like a proper 'Hagenees' (inhabitant of The Hague). The Hague is a relaxed city in which you can reach everything by bicycle. Everything you need is here: the beach, the dunes and of course the lively city center. I love that The Hague is such a green city, with many parks and forests. As a kid I always went to park Clingendael to play, look for Easter eggs in Spring or ice skate in Winter. I grew up in the Benoordenhout neighborhood, close to the dunes. Today, I no longer live in The Hague, but I still have a strong love for the city. If I am honest, I dream about moving back to The Hague one day. Because Amsterdam is quite nice, but The Hague is and will remain my city.

Niet te missen Dat de stad aan het strand ligt is uniek, daar moet je zeker heen. Niet in het drukke middenstuk, maar verder naar rechts op het Zwarte Pad of verder naar links op het Zuiderstrand.

Not to be missed It is unique that The Hague has such a beautiful beach, that is something you should see and experience. Don't go to the busy central part, but walk further out to the right or further left to the other side of the harbor where the beach is more quiet.

Het lekkerste eten Bij Kiraku kan je fantastisch Japans eten. En als ik in Den Haag ben, ga ik altijd even voor een grote puntzak friet met mayo naar 't Kleinste Winkeltje. Met lekker weer zit je op de terrasje van het Anna Pauwlonaplein super, lekker rustig. Geheime tip Ga dwalen door de kleine straatjes van het Hofkwartier. Neem daar een lekker Maison Kelder-taartje bij 't Ogenblik aan de Molenstraat en ga al die unieke gezellige winkeltjes ontdekken rondom de Oude Molstraat. Sportieve tip In Den Haag zijn mooie sportevenementen, zoals dit jaar de Invictus Games en Special Olympics. Het is echt een sportstad en dat soort evenementen zijn een mooie manier om de stad te ervaren.

The best food The Japanese food at Kiraku is fantastic. And when I am in The Hague I always stop by 't Kleinste Winkeltje in the Papestraat for a large portion of fries with mayonnaise. When the weather is good, the outdoor terrace on the Anna Pauwlonaplein is such a nice place to be, nice and quiet. Insider tip Wander through the little streets of the Hofkwartier neighbourbood. Stop at lunchroom 't Ogenblik in the Molenstraat for a piece of hazzlenut-foam pie of bakery Maison Kelder. Explore the unique and beautiful shops around the Oude Molstraat. Sporty tip There are many great sports events in The Hague, such as the Invictus Games and Special Olympics this year. The Hague is really a sports city and going to a sports event is really part of the experience.

75 years of freedom, peace and justice in The Hague

Het is dit jaar 75 jaar geleden dat Nederland werd bevrijd. Den Haag heeft net als veel andere plekken in Nederland zwaar geleden onder de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Daarom wordt dit jaar in de stad uitgebreid stilgestaan bij de slachtoffers die zijn gevallen en vieren we de vrijheden die we verworven hebben.

This year it is 75 years ago that The Netherlands was liberated. Like the rest of the country, The Hague suffered heavily during the Second World War. Therefore, the victims of the war will be commemorated and acquired freedoms will be celebrated this year in The Hague.

De Duitse bezetter bestuurde Nederland in de oorlog vanuit Den Haag. Om het bezette gebied te beschermen tegen een mogelijke geallieerde invasie, werd vanaf 1943 langs de hele kuststrook van Den Haag begonnen met de aanleg van de Atlantikwall, een enorm complex aan bunkers, tunnels en andere verdedigingswerken. Enkele overgebleven bunkers in Scheveningen en Kijkduin zijn tegenwoordig regelmatig te bezoeken. Vlak voor het einde van de oorlog krijgt Den Haag het nog zwaar te verduren. Op 3 maart 1945 bombardeert een vloot Britse bommenwerpen door een coรถrdinatiefout de Haagse wijk Bezuidenhout in plaats van raketinstallaties van de Duitsers in het Haagse Bos. Het is een fout die 550 mensen het leven kost, 250 mensen raken gewond en tienduizenden mensen zijn ineens dakloos. Op 8 mei 1945, dit jaar 75 jaar geleden, wordt Den Haag bevrijd. Na de oorlog worden de Verenigde Naties (VN) opgericht. In het Vredespaleis in Den Haag wordt het hoogste gerechtshof ter wereld gevestigd, dat oorlogen moet voorkomen door rechtspraak. Daarmee werd Den Haag de wereldwijde stad van vrede en recht. Vele organisaties die zich met vrede en recht bezig houden vestigden zich daardoor in Den Haag; inmiddels zijn het er meer dan 200. Daardoor wordt in Den Haag elke dag gewerkt aan een meer vredige en rechtvaardige wereld. In 2020 zijn het hele jaar activiteiten die de oorlog herdenken, de vrijheid vieren en vrede en recht onder de aandacht brengen. Zo vinden in april en mei de Haagse Vrijheidsweken plaats, wordt in september de Internationale Dag van de Vrede gevierd en bestaat de VN op 24 oktober 75 jaar. The German forces used The Hague as their centre of power in The Netherlands. To defend the occupied territory against a possible allied invasion, the construction of an immense complex of bunkers, walls and tunnels called the Atlantikwall started along the coast of The Hague in 1943. Some bunkers that were part of the Atlantikwall in Kijkduin and Scheveningen can regularly be visited nowadays. Just before the war ended, The Hague suffered an enormous trauma. On 3 March 1945, a fleet of British bombers accidently bombed the neighbourhood Bezuidenhout instead of German rocket launching installations, therewith killing 550 people, injuring another 250 and making tenthousands of people homeless. On 8 May 1945, this year 75 years ago, The Hague was liberated. After the war, the United Nations (UN) was established. Its International Court of Justice, the highest court in the world, was established in the Peace Palace in The Hague. It has the goal of preventing war by solving conflicts between states in court. Therewith, The Hague became the international city of peace and justice. 75 years later, more than 200 international organisations and NGOs located in The Hague. Every day, thousands of people in The Hague are working towards a more peaceful and just world. In 2020, The Hague commemorates the war and celebrates freedom, peace and justice. The Hague celebrates the Freedom Weeks in April and May. 21 September is the International Day of Peace and on 24 October, the 75 years existence of the United Nations is celebrated. The Hague is the royal city of the Netherlands. The King and his family live here, making the city the official royal residence. The House of Orange already calls The Hague its home for four centuries. Noordeinde Palace in the city centre is where the King has his office, just two streets away from the parliament buildings. When the flag on top of the palace is raised, the King is in the country. The neighbourhood around the palace is full of elegant boutique shops in which the Royals can regularly be seen shopping.

59 Mauritshuis The Mauritshuis is home to the finest Dutch paintings from the Golden Age. Masterpieces such as Vermeer's 'Girl with the Pearl Earring', the 'Self-Portrait' by Rembrandt, 'The Goldfinch' by Fabritius and 'The Bull' by Potter are permanently on display in the intimate museum rooms of this seventeenthcentury monumental building. Panorama Mesdag is an absolutely unique experience. Look 360 degrees around you and experience the magical optical illusion created by this panorama painting of Scheveningen as it was in the year 1881. From an artificial dune in the middle of the room, visitors feel as if they are standing on top of the Seinpost dune in 188, looking out across the sea and beach. The canvas has an impressive surface area of 1,680 m2 and was painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag.

Mauritshuis Het Mauritshuis huisvest het beste van de Nederlandse schilderkunst uit de Gouden Eeuw. Panorama Mesdag Panorama Mesdag is een absoluut unieke ervaring. Kijk 360 graden in het rond en onderga de magische illusie van dit panoramaschilderij dat Scheveningen in 1881 laat zien. Vanaf een kunstmatig opgeworpen duin in het midden van het museum heeft de bezoeker een uitzicht alsof hij op het Seinpostduin in Scheveningen in 1881 staat en over de zee en het strand uitkijkt. Het doek heeft een oppervlakte van maar liefst 1.680 m2 en is geschilderd door Hendrik Willem Mesdag.

Peace Palace

Het prachtige Vredespaleis staat aan de oorsprong van Den Haag als internationale stad van vrede en recht. Het opende de deuren in 1913 en huisvest twee internationale hoven, waaronder het Internationaal Gerechtshof van de Verenigde Naties. In het bezoekerscentrum bij de poort is gratis een zeer interessante audiotour te volgen om meer te weten te komen over het gebouw en de geschiedenis van vrede en recht.

The beautiful Peace Palace has laid the foundation of The Hague as international city of peace and justice. The building opened its doors in 1913 and houses two international courts, including the International Court of Justice of the United Nations. The Visitors Centre at the gate offers a very interesting free audio tour that explains the history of the building and peace and justice.

Enkele weekenden per jaar opent het Vredespaleis de poorten voor rondleidingen. Een gids toont dan niet alleen de belangrijkste ruimtes en de mooiste kunstwerken in het gebouw, maar vertelt ook alles over dit wereldwijde symbool van vrede en recht.

61 Museum Escher in Het Paleis Optische illusies en wiskunde precisie staan centraal in de werken van graficus M.C. Escher. Zijn 'onmogelijke' voorstellingen weten jong en oud te boeien, zoals 'Dag en Nacht', waarin vogels uit Hollandse weiden groeien en 'Klimmen en dalen', waarin rijen mensen in een oneindige lus trappen open aflopen. Zijn fantasierijke constructies, die in werkelijkheid onmogelijk gebouwd kunnen worden, zijn een spel van gezichtsbedrog en perspectief. Het museum is gevestigd in een voormalig stadspaleis van Koningin Emma aan het statige Lange Voorhout. Museum Escher in The Palace Optical illusions and mathematical precision are central to the works of graphic artist M.C. Escher. His 'impossible' displays facinate young and old, such as 'Day and Night', in which birds seem to grow from Dutch meadows, and 'Ascending and descending' in which rows of people walk up and down stairs in an infinite loop. His imaginative constructions, which is reality are impossible to build, are a play of optical illusion and perspective. The museum is housed in a former city palace of Queen Emma. The second floor is made in to an interactive world in which walls seem to move and children and bigger than their parents.

The Prison Gate Museum The Prison Gate Museum is an icon of The Hague, attractively located beside the Hofvijver. De geschiedenis van Den Haag gaat terug tot de 13e eeuw toen graaf Floris IV van Holland een jachthuis liet bouwen op een vrijwel leeg stuk land. Het jachthuis stond op de grens van het ontgonnen veenlandschap en het nog woeste bos- en duingebied langs de kust, naast de huidige Hofvijver. Dit gebied stond bekend als 'Die Haghe'. Willems zoon Floris V bouwde het huis uit tot een kasteel met een hof, nu bekend als het Binnenhof. Inmiddels is het al eeuwen in gebruik als het centrum van de macht in Nederland. Het is het oudste parlementsgebouw ter wereld dat nog in gebruik is. Het Binnenhof, de Ridderzaal, het Torentje van de minister-president en de Hofvijver behoren tot de meest herkenbare plaatsen van Nederland. The history of The Hague goes back to the 13th century when Count Floris IV of Holland had a hunting lodge built on uninhabited land on the border of the peat grounds and the wild forests and dune area along the coast. The area was known as 'Die Haghe', which later became Den Haag. William's son Floris V expanded the house into a castle with a court, now known as the Inner Court.

Wegwijs | Getting around 70 Bereikbaarheid Den Haag ligt aan twee snelwegen: de A4 (uit Rotterdam en Amsterdam) en de A12 (uit Utrecht). Vanaf de snelweg sta je met de auto al na twee verkeerslichten in het centrum. Volg hiervoor de borden met Centrumring. Deze route voert om het autoluwe centrum en leidt naar de dichtstbijzijnde parkeergarages waar nog plaatsen vrij zijn. Kijk op denhaag.com/nl/bereikbaarheidden-haag voor het actuele overzicht. Parkeren in de binnenstad Het winkelgebied in de binnenstad is autoluw. Voor parkeren op straat moet je betalen. Dit geldt dagelijks vanaf de ochtend tot middernacht en in het weekend tot 2 uur. Voor de meeste parkeerplaatsen in de binnenstad geldt een maximum parkeerduur van 2 uur. Dit geldt niet voor de parkeergarages. Voor parkeren op straat kan je bij alle parkeerautomaten betalen met pinpas of creditcard. Den Haag kent betaald parkeren op kenteken met een maximale parkeerduur en een hoog tarief (€ 4 per uur). De parkeergarages hebben lagere tarieven en geen maximale parkeerduur. Beter kun je dus van een parkeergarage gebruikmaken. De tarieven variëren hier van € 2 tot € 4 per uur (€ 20 tot € 30 per dag). De meeste garages zijn 24 uur per dag geopend. Scheveningen Wil je naar Scheveningen, kom dan bij voorkeur met het OV. Of parkeer op een P&R en reid door met het OV, een OV-fiets of deelscooter. Wil je toch met de auto naar het strand, volg dan de borden Scheveningen Bad of Scheveningen Haven. Als het rustig is, ben je er in 10 minuten, maar als het druk is kan de reistijd oplopen tot meer dan een uur. Kijk voor de drukte richting

Scheveningen op denhaag.com/nl/ scheveningen. In een groot deel van Scheveningen geldt dagelijks betaald parkeren met een maximum parkeerduur van 60 of 120 minuten. Betaald parkeren geldt in delen van ma t/m zo tussen 10-24 uur, plus op za en zo van 0-2 uur; in andere delen op ma t/m zo tussen 13-24 uur. Wil je op Scheveningen langer dan 1 uur parkeren, doe dit dan in de een van de parkeergarages waar je onbeperkt kunt parkeren. De garage Parking Scheveningen Bad (Zwolsestraat) heeft vrijwel altijd plek. Je loopt vanaf hier binnen enkele minuten naar het strand. Een andere mogelijkheid is de Strandweg. Hier geldt ook een onbeperkte parkeerduur. Houd op zomerse dagen rekening met filevorming! Kijkduin Vanaf de snelweg ben je via afrit Den Haag Zuid-West zo in Kijkduin. Hier kun je gratis parkeren. P+R = Park & Ride Bespaar tijd en geld en parkeer de auto bij een P+R. Je vermijdt daarmee files naar de binnenstad en het kost minder parkeergeld. P+R Station Ypenburg Vanuit de richting Gouda/Utrecht over de A12 is de P+R naast Station Ypenburg een goede optie. Hier kun je parkeren en vervolgens reis je met de trein in acht minuten naar Den Haag Centraal Station. Handig: het terrein heeft enkele oplaadpunten voor elektrische auto's en naast het terrein ligt een snellaadstation. Vanaf circa februari 2020 kun je alleen op dit terrein parkeren met een OV-kaart wanneer je kunt aantonen dat je doorreist met het OV. Je parkeert dan tegen een zeer laag tarief van € 2. P+R De Uithof Voor wie uit de richting van Westland komt, kan gratis parkeren op het parkeerterrein van sportcen-

trum De Uithof (Jaap Edenweg 10). Met tram 4 ben je in circa 20 minuten in het centrum van Den Haag. P+R Laan van NOI Parkeren op het P+R-terrein van NS-station Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indië (Van Alphenstraat 102, Voorburg) kost € 2,19 per uur. Vanaf het treinstation reis je in 5 minuten naar de Haagse binnenstad. Bus 23 rijdt vanaf hier in ongeveer 20 minuten naar Scheveningen. Park & Bike Duindigt Parkeer uw auto op een gereserveerde parkeerplek en fiets in 14 minuten naar de boulevard van Scheveningen.Zo werkt het: - Op parkenbikedenhaag.nl reserveer je eenvoudig een datum; - Kies je fiets. Een fiets met terugtraprem kost € 8,- per dag, een fiets met versnelling kost € 10,- per dag; - Parkeer je auto op de gereserveerde dag en haal de Haagsche stadfiets op bij Park & Bike. Invalidenparkeerplaatsen Mensen met een Europese gehandicaptenparkeerkaart kunnen gratis gebruikmaken van speciale algemene invalidenparkeerplaatsen. Wegwijs | Getting around 74 Accessibility The Hague is connected by two motorways: the A4 (from Rotterdam and Amsterdam) and the A12 (from Utrecht). When you leave the motorway, you only need to go through two traffic lights to reach the city centre. Follow the signs marked 'Centrumring'. This route bypasses the city centre, which is car-free, and takes you to the nearest car parks that have parking spaces available. See denhaag.com/en/accessibility-thehague for up-to-date information. Parking in the city centre The shopping area in the city centre is car-free. There is paid parking on the street. This is daily from the morning until midnight and at weekends until 2 am. Most parking spaces in the city centre have a maximum parking time of 2 hours. This does not apply to car parks. When you park on the street, you can use a debit or credit card at all pay and display machines. The Hague has paid parking spaces that use number plate recognition with a maximum parking time and a high rate (€ 4 per hour). The car parks have lower rates and no maximum parking time.
