Welcome to my city

Als geboren en getogen Hagenaar ben ik trots op Den Haag. Het is een stad die alles heeft, voor de mensen die er wonen én voor bezoekers van buiten. Waar anders vind je zoveel klassieke grandeur en doe-maar-gewoon bij elkaar? Waar is zoveel geschiedenis omringd door de modernste architectuur? Den Haag is chique met een ruw randje, verleden en heden bij elkaar - een geweldige mix.

As a native son - a ‘Hagenaar’ born and raised - I am extremely proud of The Hague. It is a city that has it all, both for those who live here and for visitors. Where else can you find so much classic grandeur and down-to-earth character in one place? Where else is so much history enveloped by the most modern architecture? The Hague is elegant with a rough edge; where the past and present meet - a charming mix.

De beste manier om de stad te leren kennen is te voet of op de fiets. Ik kan u uit ervaring zeggen: dat gaat nooit vervelen. Ik nodig u graag uit de stad te ontdekken en persoonlijk te ervaren wat Den Haag allemaal heeft te bieden. En wie weet komen we elkaar onderweg tegen. Ik wens u heel veel plezier in mijn stad!

The best way to get to know the city is on foot or by bike. And I can tell you from personal experience: it is never boring. I would like to invite you to discover the city and experience for yourself all that The Hague has to offer. And who knows, maybe we will run into each other along the way. • Het mooiste gebouw ter wereld Het Kunstmuseum Den Haag, voorheen Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, van de beroemde architect Berlage. Een prachtig voorbeeld van Nederlandse bouwkunst en een geweldige kunstcollectie.

• The world’s most beautiful building The Kunstmuseum Den Haag, formerly Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, designed by the renowned architect H.P. Berlage. This example of Dutch architecture houses a fantastic art collection.

• Zeker doen Wandelen in de duinen ‘op’ Scheveningen of bij Kijkduin. Of nog beter: een rondje hardlopen.

• A must-do Take a stroll through the dunes at Scheveningen or Kijkduin. Or even better: go for a run.

• Niet te missen Je kunt er niet omheen: het Binnenhof en omgeving. Maak een foto van de mooiste skyline van Den Haag vanaf de Lange Vijverberg, met de Hofvijver op de voorgrond.

• Not to be missed There is no avoiding it: the Binnenhof and surrounding area. Take a picture from the Lange Vijverberg to capture the most picturesque skyline in all of The Hague with the Hofvijver in the foreground.

• Het lekkerste eten De Denneweg is als 'eetstraat' wereldberoemd in Den Haag. Van harte aanbevolen. Maar zelf ben ik gek op Indisch eten, met restaurant Soeboer op de Brouwersgracht als favoriet.

• The best food The Denneweg is a world-famous ‘food street’ in The Hague. Personally I love Indonesian cuisine. Soeboer on the Brouwersgracht is my favourite.

• Geheime tip Het Papaverhof van Stijl-architect Jan Wils uit de jaren ’20 in de Bloemenbuurt. Nog steeds mooi en modern, maar ook intiem en verstild.

• Insider tip The Papaverhof housing complex in the Bloemenbuurt, designed by De Stijl architect Jan Wils in the 1920s. It remains beautiful and modern, yet intimate and peaceful.

Rembrandt & De Gouden Eeuw In 2019 staat Nederland in het teken van Rembrandt en de Gouden Eeuw. Aanleiding is de 350ste sterfdag van de beroemdste Hollandse Meester op 4 oktober 2019. Den Haag als middelpunt van de bestuurlijke macht speelde een belangrijke rol in die periode getuige de vele meesterwerken in de musea, de invloedrijke inwoners en bekende locaties. Rembrandt’s leerling Nicolaes Maes Mauritshuis • 17 oktober - 19 januari 2020 Naast de vaste collectie met vele Rembrandts, organiseert het Mauritshuis in de herfst een ten toonstelling met werk van een van de meest talentvolle leerlingen van Rembrandt: Nicolaes Maes. Hij begon zijn carrière met het schilderen van Bijbelse verhalen, waarin de invloed van zijn leermeester duidelijk terugkomt. In de daaropvolgende jaren schilderde hij intieme huiselijke taferelen en vanaf 1660 ontwikkelde Maes een elegante stijl van portretten. Glans, glorie en misère. De Gouden Eeuw in Den Haag Haags Historisch Museum • t/m 27 oktober De leerzame tentoonstelling 'Glans, glorie en misère. De Gouden Eeuw in Den Haag.' in het Haags Historisch Museum toont niet alleen de schittering, maar ook de dagelijkse realiteit van de 17e eeuw. Den Haag was in de Gouden Eeuw hét centrum van de macht en het politieke middelpunt van ons land. Hier woonden de Oranjes, die als stadhouders een machtspositie genoten. Rond het Binnenhof, het oudste regeringscentrum ter wereld, verrezen indrukwekkende stadspaleizen voor diplomaten en rijke burgers. Rembrandt & The Dutch Golden Age In 2019, the Netherlands celebrates the legacy of Rembrandt and the Golden Age. It is 350 years since the death of one of Holland’s most beloved Dutch Masters, Rembrandt van Rijn, on October 4 1669. As the hub of administrative authority, The Hague played a vital role in the 17th century Rembrandt's student Nicolaes Maes Mauritshuis • 17 October - 19 January 2020 In addition to the permanent collection with many Rembrandts, an exhibition will be held in the Mauritshuis in the fall with work by one of Rembrandt's most talented students: Nicolaes Maes. He started his career painting biblical stories, in which the influence of his teacher can be clearly seen. In the years that followed, he painted intimate domestic scenes and from 1660 Maes developed an elegant portrait style. Gloss, glory and misery. The Golden Age in The Hague Historical Museum of The Hague • until 27 October The exhibition shows not only the brilliance, but also the daily reality of the 17th century. During the Golden Age, The Hague was the centre of power and the political heart of our country. The Oranges, who enjoyed a position of power as stadtholders, lived here. Around the Binnenhof, the oldest government centre in the world, impressive city palaces were built for diplomats and wealthy citizens. The city has been the living and working residence of the House of Orange for four centuries. You might encounter them on the street or shopping in one of 'their' stores. Noordeinde Palace is situated on one of The Hague's most elegant shopping streets. If King Willem-Alexander is present, the flag is raised at the palace. During the summer months, part of the palace is open to the public for a brief period.

Panorama Mesdag is an absolutely unique experience. Look 360o around you and experience the magical optical illusion created by this panorama of Scheveningen from 1881. From an artificial dune in the middle of the room, visitors feel as if they are standing on top of the Seinpost dune (dating from 1881) looking out across the sea and the beach. The canvas has an impressive surface area of 1,680 m2 and was painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag.

Panorama Mesdag Panorama Mesdag is een absoluut unieke ervaring. Kijk 360o in het rond en onderga de magische illusie van het zins begoochelende panorama van Scheveningen uit 1881. 57 Museum Escher in Het Paleis Op de kop van het Lange Voorhout staat het kleine 18de-eeuws paleisje van koningin Emma dat tegenwoordig is gewijd aan het werk van M.C. Escher. Deze graficus weet jong en oud te boeien met zijn 'onmogelijke' voorstellingen zoals 'Dag en Nacht', waarin vogels uit Hollandse weiden groeien en 'Klimmen en dalen', waarin rijen mensen in een oneindige lus trappen open aflopen. Zijn fantasierijke constructies, die in werkelijkheid onmogelijk gebouwd kunnen worden, zijn een spel van gezichtsbedrog en perspectief. De tweede etage is veranderd in een interactieve wereld. Hier lijken muren te bewegen en lijken kinderen groter dan hun ouders!

Kunstmuseum Den Haag Met de grootste collectie ter wereld is het Kunstmuseum Den Haag, voorheen Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, de internationale thuishaven van Piet Mondriaan. In de Mondriaan & De Stijl-vleugel is te zien hoe Piet Mondriaan zich ontwikkelt van getalenteerd landschapsschilder tot pionier van de moderne kunst waarbij zijn 'Boogie Woogie' natuurlijk het hoogtepunt vormt. Museum Escher in The Palace At the end of Lange Voorhout you will find the small 18th-century palace of Queen Emma that is now dedicated to the work of M.C. Escher. This graphic artist wows young and old with his 'impossible' creations, such as 'Day and Night' in which birds seem to grow from Dutch meadows, and 'Ascending and descending' in which rows of people walk up and down stairs in an infinite loop. His imaginative constructions, which in reality are impossible to build, are a play of optical illusion and perspective. The second floor has been transformed into an interactive world. Walls seem to move here and children appear bigger than their parents!

Kunstmuseum Den Haag With the biggest collection in the world, Kunstmuseum Den Haag is the international home of Piet Mondrian. In the Mondrian & De Stijl wing, visitors can see how Mondrian evolved from a talented landscape artists to become a pioneer of modern art, with the highlight of the show formed by his 'Boogie Woogie'. The Prison Gate Museum The Prison Gate Museum is an icon of The Hague, attractively located beside the Hofvijver. During the 13th century, this building formed the imposing gateway to the Binnenhof. Several centuries later, it became a prison and court building for the mighty Court of Holland. Suspected criminals awaited their trial and defaulters were incarcerated here. De geschiedenis van Den Haag gaat terug tot de 13e eeuw toen graaf Floris IV van Holland een jachthuis bouwde op een vrijwel leeg land op de grens van het ontgonnen veenlandschap en het nog woeste bos- en duingebied langs de kust naast de huidige Hofvijver; een gebied dat bekend stond als 'Die Haghe'. Willems zoon Floris V bouwt het hof uit tot een kasteel, nu bekend als het Binnenhof, langzaam het centrum van de huidige Nederlandse politiek.

The history of The Hague goes back to the 13th century when Count Floris IV of Holland built a hunting lodge on virtually uninhabited land on the border of the peat grounds and the wild forest and dune area along the coast beside the current Hofvijver; an area that was known as 'Die Haghe'. William's son Floris V expanded the court into a castle, now known as the Binnenhof, which slowly became the current centre of Dutch politics.

Parking in The Hague Parkeren in Den Haag

In The Hague and Scheveningen paid parking applies from 09 AM to 12 PM on weekdays and on Fridays and Saturdays from 09 AM to 02 AM the next morning. For tourists it is much easier and cheaper to park in one of the car parks. The Hague and Scheveningen also have an extensive network of trams and buses. They will often get you to your destination quicker than if you go by car. In Den Haag en Scheveningen geldt betaald parkeren van 9 uur ’s ochtends tot middernacht en op vrijdag en zaterdag van 9 uur ’s ochtends tot 2 uur de volgende morgen. 71 Bereikbaarheid Den Haag ligt aan twee snelwegen: de A4 (uit Rotterdam en Amsterdam) en de A12 (uit Utrecht). Vanaf de snelweg sta je met de auto al na twee verkeerslichten in het centrum. Volg hiervoor de borden met Centrumring. Deze route voert om het autoluwe centrum en leidt naar de dichtstbijzijnde parkeergarages waar nog plaatsen vrij zijn. Kijk op denhaag.com/nl/centrum-bereikbaarheid voor het actuele overzicht. Parkeren in de binnenstad Het winkelgebied in de binnenstad is autoluw. Voor parkeren op straat moet je betalen. Dit geldt dagelijks vanaf de ochtend tot middernacht en in het weekend tot 2 uur. Voor de meeste parkeerplaatsen in de binnenstad geldt een maximum parkeerduur van 2 uur. Dit geldt niet voor de parkeergarages. Voor parkeren op straat kan je bij alle parkeerautomaten betalen met pinpas of credit-card. Den Haag kent betaald parkeren op kenteken met een maximale parkeerduur en een hoog tarief (€ 4 per uur). De parkeergarages hebben lagere tarieven en geen maximale parkeerduur. Beter kun je dus van een parkeergarage gebruikmaken. De tarieven variëren hier van € 2 tot € 4 per uur (€ 20 tot € 30 per dag). De meeste garages zijn 24 uur per dag geopend. Scheveningen Wil je naar Scheveningen, kom dan bij voorkeur met het OV. Of parkeer op een P&R en reid door met het OV, een OV-fiets of deelscooter. Wil je toch met de auto naar het strand, volg dan de borden Scheveningen Bad of Scheveningen Haven. Als het rustig is, ben je er in 10 minuten, maar als het druk is kan de reistijd oplopen tot meer dan een uur. Kijk voor de drukte richting

Scheveningen op denhaag.com/nl/ scheveningen. In een groot deel van Scheveningen geldt dagelijks betaald parkeren met een maximum parkeerduur van 60 of 120 minuten. Betaald parkeren geldt in delen van ma t/m zo tussen 10-24 uur, plus op za en zo van 0-2 uur; in andere delen op ma t/m zo tussen 13-24 uur. Wil je op Scheveningen langer dan 1 uur parkeren, doe dit dan in de een van de parkeergarages waar je onbeperkt kunt parkeren. De garage Parking Scheveningen Bad (Zwolsestraat) heeft vrijwel altijd plek. U loopt vanaf hier binnen enkele minuten naar het strand. Een andere mogelijkheid is de Strandweg. Hier geldt ook een onbeperkte parkeerduur. Houd op zomerse dagen rekening met filevorming! Kijkduin Vanaf de snelweg ben je via afrit Den Haag Zuid-West zo in Kijkduin. Hier kun je gratis parkeren. P+R = Park & Ride Bespaar tijd en geld en parkeer de auto bij een P+R. Je vermijdt daarmee files naar de binnenstad en het kost minder parkeergeld. P+R Station Ypenburg Vanuit de richting Gouda/Utrecht over de A12 is de P+R naast Station Ypenburg een goede optie. Hier kun je parkeren en vervolgens reis je met de trein in acht minuten naar Den Haag Centraal Station. Handig: het terrein heeft enkele oplaadpunten voor elektrische auto's en naast het terrein ligt een snellaadstation. Vanaf circa februari 2020 kun je alleen op dit terrein parkeren met een OV-kaart wanneer je kunt aantonen dat je doorreist met het OV. Je parkeert dan tegen een zeer laag tarief van € 2. P+R De Uithof Voor wie uit de richting van Westland komt, kan gratis parkeren op het parkeerterrein van sportcen-

trum De Uithof (Jaap Edenweg 10). Met tram 4 ben je in circa 20 minuten in het centrum van Den Haag. P+R Laan van NOI Parkeren op het P+R-terrein van NS-station Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indië (Van Alphenstraat 102, Voorburg) kost € 2,19 per uur. Vanaf het treinstation reis je in 5 minuten naar de Haagse binnenstad. Bus 23 rijdt vanaf hier in ongeveer 20 minuten naar Scheveningen. Park & Bike Duindigt Parkeer uw auto op een gereserveerde parkeerplek en fiets in 14 minuten naar de boulevard van Scheveningen.Zo werkt het: - Op parkenbikedenhaag.nl reserveert u eenvoudig een datum; - Kies uw fiets. Een fiets met terugtraprem kost € 8,- per dag, een fiets met versnelling kost € 10,- per dag; - Parkeer uw auto op de gereserveerde dag en haal de Haagsche stadfiets op bij Park & Bike. Invalidenparkeerplaatsen Mensen met een Europese gehandicaptenparkeerkaart kunnen gratis gebruikmaken van speciale algemene invalidenparkeerplaatsen. Deze plaatsen zijn te herkennen aan het blauwe E6-parkeerbord met een rolstoel. Om te zien waar je een gehandicaptenparkeerplaats in Den Haag vindt, kun je kijken op ongehinderd.nl. De Europese gehandicaptenkaart is niet geldig op de openbare parkeerplaatsen waar betaald parkeren geldt. Wegwijs | Getting around 74 Accessibility The Hague is connected by two motorways: the A4 (from Rotterdam and Amsterdam) and the A12 (from Utrecht). When you leave the motorway, you only need to go through two traffic lights to reach the city centre. Follow the signs marked ‘Centrumring’. This route bypasses the city centre, which is car-free, and takes you to the nearest car parks that have parking spaces available. See denhaag.com/en/centre-accessibility for up-to-date information. Parking in the city centre The shopping area in the city centre is car-free. There is paid parking on the street. This is daily from the morning until midnight and at weekends until 2 am. Most parking spaces in the city centre have a maximum parking time of 2 hours. This does not apply to car parks. When you park on the street, you can use a debit or credit card at all pay and display machines. The Hague has paid parking spaces that use number plate recognition with a maximum parking time and a high rate (€ 4 per hour). The car parks have lower rates and no maximum parking time. It is more advantageous to use a car park. Car park rates vary from € 2 to € 4 per hour (€ 20 to € 30 per day). Most car parks are open 24 hours a day. Scheveningen If you want to visit Scheveningen, it is best to use OV (public transport). Or park at a P+R then continue with OV, an OV bicycle or scooter sharing. In some areas of Scheveningen, you need to pay for parking from Monday to Sunday between 10 am and midnight and on Saturdays and Sundays between midnight and 2 am. Park & Bike Duindigt Park your car in a reserved parking space and cycle to the boulevard in Scheveningen in 14 minutes. A bike with a back-pedal brake costs €8 per day; a bike with gears costs €10 per day; - Park your car on the reserved day and pick up your bicycle at Park & Bike.
