Brad Erickson Head Coach

South Dakota State University head coach Brad Erickson is entering his 34th season as the head coach of the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s swimming teams. Since being named head swimming coach in 1976, Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in 1979 and the SDSU women to an NCC title in 1981. In the 2000-01 season he was named the North Central Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year after leading SDSU to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. In the fall of 2002, Erickson was honored with SDSU's Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDSU alumnus in the field of education and coaching. A 1974 graduate of South Dakota State, Erickson became the first SDSU swimmer to compete in the NCAA Division II Championships, as a junior. The Arlington, S.D., native won three North Central Conference titles, winning the 200-yard breaststroke twice and the 100yard breaststroke once. Erickson has continued to represent SDSU at NCAA swimming championships during his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I women’s and men’s championships since 1982. He also has served as the NCAA Division II Championships coordinator since 1996 and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee. Aside from his duties as swimming coach, Erickson also teaches aquatic courses, recreational sports programming and administration, organization and administration of HPER and various other activity courses. He and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of two sons: Benji and Blake.

Phil Hurley Assistant Coach Coach Phil Hurley enters his fifth season as Assistant Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving coach at South Dakota State this fall. Hurley is the recruiting coordinator for SDSU, specializes in the distance events and assists Coach Erickson with team practices and events. Hurley says, “I have swam and worked with a lot of great coaches and by being an athlete myself I try to pass along my experiences to the athletes so they can learn from my mistakes and my successes.” Hurley competed collegiately at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as team captain for three seasons before graduating in 1998. After completing a military commitment in the U.S. Army, Hurley enrolled in graduate school at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., serving as a graduate assistant swimming coach for two seasons while completing a master's degree in exercise, fitness and health promotion. While at George Mason, Hurley also coached several club and youth teams in Northern Virginia. Coach Hurley is the Chair of S.D. Masters Swimming branch and is a member of the U.S. Masters Swimming organization.

2 Swimming & Diving

Amie Buoy Diving Coach Amie Buoy is in her first season with the Jackrabbit swimming and diving teams as diving coach. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Buoy graduated from the University of Nebraska in May 2007, with a degree in international studies. She competed on the Huskers' swimming and diving team from 2002 through 2006, earning a trip to the 2005 NCAA Championships, where she earned 18th place in the 3-meter diving competition. She also earned second place on both the 1- and 3-meter boards at the Big 12 Championships in 2005. Prior to competing at Nebraska, she trained with the Edmonton Kinsmen Diving Club and was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team in 1999 and 2002. In 2002, she received 12th place in the 3-meter competition at the Junior World Championships in Aachen, Germany. Buoy is working toward her master’s degree in sports pedagogy at South Dakota State.

• SDSU Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Preview • 2009-10 Preview

Youth will be served in a big way for the 2009-10 South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team. The Jackrabbits welcome 13 freshmen to a team that has improved its finish each of the last two seasons in The Summit League. One of the strengths of the team, according to head coach Brad Erickson, should be the distance freestyle events. “We have a couple of freshmen in Tyler Smoragiewicz and Kyle Ochsner who are going to challenge some school records,” said Erickson, who is entering his 34th season as head coach and is the longest tenured head coach at SDSU. Senior James Motley, who is ineligble to compete the first semester, also is expected to contribute in the distance events, after setting the school records last season in the 1,650 freestyle, as well as the 200 butterfly during the last day of the Summit League Championships.

The season wraps up in Indianapolis on Feb.18-20 for the Summit League Championships. Erickson sees no reason why the Jacks should be able to improve on their fifth-place finish of last season. “We feel that we have the talent on the men’s side that we can improve a spot or two from last year’s finish.” 2009-10 Men’s Summit League Swimming & Diving Preseason Poll Team Points (1st) 1. Oakland 36 (6) 2. Centenary 28 (1) 3. Eastern Illinois 26 4. South Dakota 19 5. South Dakota State 16 6. Western Illinois 15 7. IUPUI 7

“I think that our butterfly events are also going to be good with the same three guys, plus junior Jason Garder” Erickson said. Garder was part of the school record 200 freestyle relay team last season at the conference championships. The Jacks have potential to be good in the sprints according to Erickson. Returners include junior John Bisson and sophomore Jeremy Yacevich “Sprints are always kind of a tossup, because one- or two-tenths of a second could get you from first to fifth place,” Erickson said. “ We have some potential there.” One area that the Jacks have not had much contribution in the past few years is diving, with some of the men’s diving records dating back nearly 35 years. SDSU went without a diver last season, but that will change with two freshmen: Brad Schoreit and redshirt Caleb Crevier. Schoreit, who has been diving since he was five years old, is a two-time Nebraska state champion and is expected to do very well for SDSU right away. Crevier joined the team last fall and “has really developed” according to Erickson. “We are looking forward to having our divers contribute to the overall picture.” The swimmers and divers will be very familiar with the University of South Dakota by the time the season ends as the Coyotes are an associate member of the Summit League before becoming a fullfledged member in a couple of years. The Jacks will travel to Vermillion on Dec. 10, host a triangular against USD and Saint Louis (Mo.) on Jan. 17 and go to Grand Forks, N.D., to take on North Dakota and USD on Jan. 30. SDSU will host a second dual against Saint Louis on Jan. 17. Other duals on the road will include Wisconsin-Green Bay on Nov. 7 and the annual winter training trip to Florida from Jan 2-9. SDSU will also take part in the Hawkeye Invitational on Nov. 2022 and the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 5-6.

• SDSU Swimming & Diving Preview • 2009-10 Preview

Unlike the men, the South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team has a plethora of experience at its disposal. Nine seniors, along with two juniors, make up a solid foundation that helped the Jacks take home third at the Summit League Championships for the second year in a row and finish with a 5-3 dual record. One key member of that third place finish was Katie Budahl. The University of Minnesota transfer broke the school record in the 100 and 200 breaststroke three separate times during the season. She also won nine individual races, including setting a SDSU and Summit League record in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.55) during the final day of the conference championships, and was a part of four winning medley relay teams. She became the first Jackrabbit woman to win an individual conference title since Diane Kelsey won her third consecutive North Central Conference 1,650 freestyle title in 1985. Senior Emily Tschetter, a Brookings native, will also be a threat in the breaststroke. One swimmer that should contribute right away is Alexandra Hoffman. Hoffman, a junior from Eureka, S.D., sat out last season due to obligations as Miss South Dakota. As a sophomore, Hoffman set five individual school records and finished as runner-up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events at The Summit League Championships. She also swam on four school-record relays during the 2007-08 season. “I think she enjoyed her time away, but really missed the swimming part of it and is really excited about getting back into it,” said head coach Brad Erickson. “Looking at her so far this fall, she trains so hard and she sets really lofty goals for herself. It won’t take long for her to get back in the swing of things.” Joining Hoffman in the backstroke will be Ellen Sinclair and freshman Lisa Newberger. “The success that those three have had and the work ethic that they bring, I think that the freshmen look up to those three as leaders,” Erickson said. “Plus all of the seniors, because they all have good qualities that make them good leaders as well.” Seniors Christina Gerometta and Kayleigh Boucher will lead the way in the distance free events. Gerometta broke four freestyle records at the Summit League Championships last season and has 12 career wins. Boucher set a career best in the 200 and 1650 freestyle at the same event. With a year more experience, Erickson expects those two to continue to improve. “They have both set high goals for themselves that will be at the top of the conference. We should have good quality as well as depth in those three events (Breast, Back, Distance). Not all contributors will be upperclassmen as the Jacks have a few incoming freshman that have the chance to make an impact right away. One such freshman is a Milbank native. “We have what we feel is an unknown in Kylie Poel,” said Erickson. Poel only swam on summer swim teams, so Erickson is excited to see what she can do in a year-around program.

“In practice, she is amazing us almost everyday.” Anna Howard placed very high in the state meet in Nebraska in freestyle events, but had a set back. Erickson said that the freshman is coming along after being in a car accident that injured her back. “She is still not where she would like to be obviously, but she has the potential to be a very good sprinter for us.” Freshman Alyson Twenge will add depth at the diving position as Erickson is expecting her to step up and do some good things. Sasha Porter, a senior diver from Alaska, got off to a quick start last season as she broke her own school record in 3-meter diving tallying 226.6 points at the season opening triangular against Western Illinois and Iowa State. As a sophomore, Porter broke the school record in the same event that stood for 25 years. Every single Jackrabbit swimming and diving record on the women’s side had fallen in the last two year, but Erickson says that they are not done yet. “It’s amazing that every year the past three or four years we have had between 16 and 20 school records be broken between the men and woman. You just wonder how long that can continue. I think that as we recruit better and better athletes as we get a better reputation, I don’t see why those records can’t continue to fall.” The season begins Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the HPER Center Pool with the first of five home duals against North Dakota. The Jacks host Iowa State on Oct. 31st, followed by a triangular against Northern Iowa and Northern Colorado on Nov. 14th. They close out their home schedule by hosting South Dakota and St. Louis on Jan. 16th along with a dual against St. Louis on the 17th. SDSU hits the road beginning on Nov. 7th with back-to-back duals against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Jacks then travel to Vermillion to take on USD on Dec. 10th followed by a dual vs. Nebraska on Dec. 12th. Other duals on the road will include the annual winter training trip from Jan 2-9 and a triangular in Grand Forks against North Dakota and South Dakota on Jan. 30. SDSU will also take part in the Husker Invitational on Nov. 19-22 and the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 5-6. 2009-10 Women’s Summit League Swimming & Diving Preseason Poll Team Points (1st) 1. • About SDSU •

With a record enrollment of 12,376 students in the fall of 2009, South Dakota State University is the state’s largest institution of higher education. EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorized in 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assembly and serves as the state’s land-grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the federal Hatch Act and linked to the University to conduct research that concerned agriculture and the home. The Cooperative Extension Service was added in 1914 through the Smith-Lever Act. During the first year of operation, only preparatory classes were held. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth was slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century there were 242 students. By 1990, enrollment topped more than 9,000 students. Today, students from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU. More than 67,000 degrees have been granted since the college was chartered in 1881.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY features an 18-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Over the past five years, the average placement rate at SDSU has been 95 percent, with placement in selected majors like pharmacy and engineering approaching 100 percent.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHED The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics, Eng-

lish, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic economy, and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. In 1964, when “State College” was renamed South Dakota State University, there were six colleges; today degrees are offered through these eight colleges: • Agricultural and Biological Sciences • Arts and Science • Education and Counseling • Engineering • Family and Consumer Sciences • General Registration • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach. (continued on next page)

SDSU BY THE NUMBERS In its 129-year history, South Dakota State has grown from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities worth more than $380 million. The University owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. South Dakota State University is experiencing unprecedented growth, both in enrollment and building projects. Projects recently completed or currently under way include: • The $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center; • Harding Hall South, a 30,000-square-foot building that will house an expansion within the College of Engineering; • The $6 million Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center; • Caldwell Hall, with work beginning on additional suite-style residence halls; • A University Student Union expansion and renovation project was completed in the summer of 2005, with another expansion in progress. • Crothers Engineering Hall — $7 million expansion; • A $3.6 million equestrian center; • Solberg Hall — multi-million dollar renovation, and • A $7.8 million campus wellness center. Additional facility projects and enhancements to academic programs are being identified through the SDSU Foundation’s “It Starts With State” campaign, a comprehensive fundraising inititative designed to raise $190 million over the next several years. Other recent building projects have included:

In addition, the Enterprise Institute building, which also houses the SDSU Foundation, was completed in the fall of 2004. The Enterprise Institute is designed to facilitate SDSU and industry resources to encourage and assist the establishment of entrepreneurial growth enterprises in the region. More than 200 majors, minors and options are available at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees are offered in more than 30 areas and doctorates are available in eight fields. SDSU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and numerous departments on campus have earned accreditation from various agencies. More than 2,000 people are employees of SDSU, and the University’s total operating budget was more than $195 million in Fiscal Year 2007. Supplementing classroom instruction are the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments. Students also have the opportunity to choose from more than 200 clubs and organizations active on campus. RESEARCH SDSU has the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in research of any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competitive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student-faculty learning opportunities. In 2006, SDSU was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as the state’s only RU/H (research uni-

concept to solve America’s energy needs and revitalize rural communities with Land-Grant university research, education and Extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based non-food industries. The Sun Grant Initiative will involve several SDSU departments, including mechanical engineering, biology and microbiology, the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence, nutrition and food sciences, chemistry and plant science. • The Economics Department is studying the economic impact of ethanol development on the state’s economy and the logistics of using biomass for producing renewable fuels. • Over the next five years, $69 million in federal funds is to be awarded to SDSU and six other universities to serve as Vanguard centers for the National Children’s Study. The NCS will study more than 100,000 children across the country from conception to age 21. As part of the Governor’s 2010 Initiative, a goal is for South Dakota to become a recognized leader in research and technology development. To realize this goal, SDSU faculty are involved in five research centers: • Center for Infectious Disease Research and Vaccinology • Center for Bioprocessing Research and Development • Center for Drought Tolerance Biotechnology • Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale • Center for the Research and Development of Light-Activated Materials An agreement between SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory will develop opportunities for SDSU faculty and students working in partnership to pursue fields of science that advance science and technology-driven economic development in South Dakota. MUSEUMS AND ATTRACTIONS The educational opportunities don’t end in the classroom or laboratory as South Dakota State University is home to several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South

Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. In 1982, the area north of the formal garden was dedicated to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. The statuesque structure on the west end of campus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes have called students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre has provided a restful, green haven for

students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Over the years the outdoor amphiteater has been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple roof lines. The house also has served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary. STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, was opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988. Through the library, users have access to holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY Today, Brookings is a growing community of about 18,700 people. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
