MEDIA INFORMATION Credentials All media credential requests for South Dakota State soccer home matches should be directed to Assistant Sports Information Director Andrew Sogn at least 24 hours before the event. The Sports Information Office may choose to mail credentials if they receive the request a week or more in advance. If not mailed, credentials may be picked up at the Jackrabbit Sports Information Office inside the Stanley J. Marshall Center on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or at Fishback Soccer Park 60 minutes prior to the start of the event. Due to limited seating at the facility, only working media may sit in the press area on a first-come, first-serve basis. Internet access is not available at Fishback Soccer park. SDSU permits live blogging with descriptions of the event, but does not permit live video streaming of either game action or postgame press conferences. Video may be archived and posted to web sites following the conclusion of the event.

Statistics The South Dakota State Sports Information Office keeps official statistics and distributes the final statistics to teams and members of the media at the conclusion of the game.

–all credentials are non-transferable–

The final decision for credentials remains at the sole discretion of SDSU Sports Information personnel. Failure to abide by the guidelines outlined on this page may result in revocation of media credentials.

Photographers The South Dakota State Athletic Department asks that photographers (live and still) do not interfere with the sight lines of spectators, and stay in the designated photography areas located along the baselines.

The following guidelines apply specifically to Internet sites: • No more than two people working for the official web site of the opponent and/or its official conference site will be issued credentials. • Web sites whose content centers around message boards and chat rooms where users can post anonymous information and/or rumors are ineligible for any consideration for credentials or access. • Credentials will not be granted to any agency operating sites that are in any way affiliated with gambling, or to freelance or fan-based sites not affiliated with a legitimate news-gathering organization.

SDSU Interview Policy The South Dakota State Sports Information Office strives to comply with all legitimate interview requests for Jackrabbit coaches, student-athletes and administrators in a timely fashion. Interview times can be arranged through the Sports Information Office or through the coach of the sport involved, preferably arranged 2448 hours in advance Monday through Thursday. Media members may not contact student-athletes directly without approval. The SDSU Sports Information Office does not release the phone numbers of student-atletes to the media, and return calls must be made collect, or via a toll free number, unless the student-athlete does the interview from the Sports Information or Coaches Office. The media may not interview student-athletes prior to a contest on the day of the game, but may do so 10 minutes after the conclusion of contests by contacting a member of the Sports Information staff or coaching staff.

Through 37 years of Division I athletics, The Summit League offers 19 championship sports and has a combined enrollment of around 100,000 at nine institutions, including three located in top 60 U.S. metro populations and two land-grant universities. Member institutions include: the University of Denver, University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, University of Nebraska Omaha, Oral Roberts University, Purdue Fort Wayne University, University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Western Illinois University. The Summit League was previously known as the Mid-Continent Conference before undergoing a rebrand in 2007. The Summit League has produced 12 NCAA National Champions with over 125 All-Americans and 100 Academic All-Americans including numerous student-athletes competing at the highest professional level. Each year, approximately 3,000 student-athletes continue to raise the bar and help The Summit League reach exceptional success and development. Within the past seven years alone, The Summit League has produced a national postseason team tournament championship, an NCAA semifinal appearance, and eight NCAA Champions. That level of success also carries into the classroom. The Summit League ranked first for NCAA Graduation Success Rate in women’s basketball from 2014-16. A total of 22 Summit League teams achieved perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores in the most recently released figures. The Summit League also produces the highest quality in competition. In 2018-19, former Summit League student-athletes competed in the NBA, MLB, the PGA, the LPGA and Major League Soccer (MLS).

COACHING HISTORY The Jackrabbit soccer program has had just two head coaches over its 17-year history, with Lang Wedemeyer taking the reigns February 15, 2000 to build a program from the ground up. The Roanoke, Virgina native walked the sidelines for 17 years before stepping down in January 2017, making way for longtime assistant Brock Thompson to step into the driver’s seat for the 2017-18 school year. Thompson brought the program to new heights in his first season at the helm, leading the Jackrabbits to their first undefeated league season (7-0-0) while claiming the 2017 regular season Summit League crown and Summit League Coach of the Year honors. He served as the assistant from 2008-16 and was promoted to the head job January 31, 2017. He was on board for all NCAA appearances and Summit League titles. Wedemeyer won over 160 games in his time as a Jackrabbit, posting a 161-123-39 record with four NCAA Tournaments, four Summit League Tournament championships, three Summit League regular season championships and a United Soccer Conference tournament title.

uary 2017 after building the program from scratch, winning 161 games in his time as a Jackrabbit.

Coaching History

Brock Thompson took over the program January 31, 2017 after nine years as its top assistant. He was named the 2017 Summit League Coach of the Year and holds an 89-59-15 career record over seven years.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

38 | 2019 JACKRABBIT SOCCER HISTORY AND RECORD BOOK

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. As South Dakota’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant university, SDSU had a fall 2018 enrollment of 12,107 students from 49 states and 85 countries. Approximately 55 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 37 percent are from other states and 8 percent from other countries. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. SDSU grants degrees from the colleges of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering and the Graduate School. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1 or doctoral-level institution. The university has been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and its Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity is a major resource for the economic development needs of the state. The Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, which assists the university’s researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated nearly $16 million in royalties and license fees since being formed. In the 2017 fiscal year alone, there were 45 invention disclosures, seven patent applications, five patents issued and six licenses. Overall, the office has overseen 432 invention disclosures, 141 patent applications, 31 patents issued and 73 licenses. SDSU Extension, with eight Regional Extension Centers across the state, is South Dakota’s source for objective, vetted and relevant new knowledge generated through research. Extension’s online learning portal, iGrow.org, served more than 750,000 users with nearly 1.1 million page views last year.

STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

PRESIDENT / DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Barry H. Dunn President South Dakota State University, ‘75 Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He took office in May 2016. Dunn received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU in 1975 and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 2000—at the Brookings campus. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. Justin Sell Athletic Director

40 | 2019 JACKRABBIT SOCCER HISTORY AND RECORD BOOK

Bowling Green University, ‘91 Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University on May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 19-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit Athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. He recently was rewarded with a fiveyear contract extension that runs through the end of the 2023-24 academic year. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 43 regular and postseason league championships in eight different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy five times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 201415 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons, and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award — an award voted upon by its peers — in 2010-11. In the classroom, SDSU student-athletes have regularly posted a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in nine consecutive years (2008-16). Numerous other teams and student-athletes have received academic honors. In January of 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights. Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at SDSU.

regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of some 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group in 2014. He served as an ex officio member of the ag advisory board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the board of directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2016. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. He lives with his wife, Jane Dunn, on her family’s original homestead north of Brookings, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during both the 2009 and 2016 seasons, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club.Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 season, and has steadily grown to more than $4 million. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $1.1 million in April 2019. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of Jackrabbit baseball. More recently, construction of the $65 million Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which serves as the home of Jackrabbit football, was completed in the fall of 2016. In addition, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was finished in the fall of 2014.The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. In the fall of 2014, Sell was appointed by the NCAA Board of Directors to represent The Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference on the newly formed Division I Council. He currently chairs the Student-Athlete Experience Committee and previously chaired the Division I Transfer Working Group. Born in Salem, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the Brookings community, Sell has served as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce and Brookings Friends of Baseball, and is a member of the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992. He and his wife, Jennie, are the parents of four children.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE JACKRABBITS: Please call us South Dakota State or SDSU. Please do not call us San Diego State, SDST or SDS, and please, never call us South Dakota. What’s the difference? Great Question. Calling us “South Dakota” is like calling Illinois State, “Illinois,” or Ohio State, “Ohio.” Again, calling South Dakota State “San Diego State” is just not cool, so please don’t do it.

Also, Jackrabbits is one word, not Jack Rabbits or JackRabbits. Our jackrabbit mascot is modeled after a real species of rabbit, not a rabbit named Jack.Technically speaking, a jackrabbit is a hare, but let’s not get technical. Calling us the Jacks is an acceptable second reference.

THE JACKRABBIT SPORTS NETWORK: Originated from the AM 570 WNAX studios in Yankton, S.D., every SDSU football, men’s and women’s basketball games along with the weekly coaches show can be heard live on a total of eight stations on the Jackrabbit Sports Network with Pierre, S.D., native, and 2012 South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year, Tyler Merriam on the call. Also the voice of Jackrabbits football and baseball, Merriam returns for an eighth year. The WNAX signal reaches into parts of seven states, with extensive coverage in South and North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa.
