Jackdaws News

James Macmillan is New Jackdaws President the news of our patron, Dame Joan sutherland’s, passing in the same year that we lost two of our vice patrons, sir Charles Mackerras and the Lord of oxford and Asquith, not to mention the terrible loss of our founder Maureen Lehane Wishart in the December, made 2011 a difficult year for Jackdaws. However it is sign of the immense regard in which Maureen and Jackdaws are held and the loyal support it receives that we have been able to recruit some amazing people to step into the breach. We are delighted to announce that the remarkable composer, James MacMillan, has agreed to become our new President and that sarah Walker and Roger Vignoles will be joining James Bowman as Vice Presidents. sarah was a massive hit at Jackdaws this summer in her inaugural course so book early if you want to be in with a chance to get onto to her next course “fiends faeries and fantasy” 18-20 May. We are very lucky to have professionals of such standing giving us their support.

James MacMillan CBE James MacMillan is internationally active as a conductor and composer. He was awarded a CBE in January 2004. Recent MacMillan works include Piano Concerto no.2 first performed with choreography by Christopher Wheeldon at New York City Ballet, a Scotch Bestiary with soloist Wayne Marshall and the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Esa-pekka Salonen, and The Sacrifice premiered and toured by Welsh National Opera in 2007. His St John Passion, co-commissioned by the LSO, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Berlin Radio Choir, was premiered under the baton of Sir Colin Davis in 2008. 2010 featured the premieres of two new concertos; a violin concerto for Vadim Repin and an oboe concerto toured by Nicholas Daniel and the Britten Sinfonia. 2011 highlights include premieres of MacMillan’s Piano Concerto no.3 for Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the Minnesota Orchestra and a new oneact opera, Clemency, commissioned by the ROH2, Scottish Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and Britten Sinfonia. James MacMillan is published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes.

The Future at Jackdaws The next two years should be very exciting here at Jackdaws. With the sale of Maureen’s house we will inherit some capital and will be using it to develop the Jackdaws site to include; a new main teaching studio, extra practice rooms, an improved dining area and some more loos! We will be working very hard to maintain Jackdaws intimate attributes and at the same time enhance them to become a world class facility! Watch this space. Jackdaws Gala Concert in London Jackdaws Music Education Trust is proud to present a Gala concert on October the 21st in St Georges Church, Hanover Square, London. Concert starts at 7pm. Join us for a fabulous gala evening as part of our memorial appeal campaign. We will be celebrating the life of our founder, Maureen Lehane Wishart, her greatest achievement, Jackdaws Music Education Trust and her greatest passion, the music that we are all care so much about. There will be performances by many wonderful artists who support Jackdaws and our mission to “bring music to life by enabling creative expression”. Come and show your support for Jackdaws unique position in the world of music which enables, inspires and promotes music making by the keenest amateur through to the greatest concert performer.

Songbirds If you are within easy reach of Frome and would like to sing every week why not join Jackbirds Songbirds - a friendly, informal singing group? There are two sessions each week both for adults. The first meets on Tuesday afternoons and you are most welcome to bring babies and preschoolers to the session. We meet weekly during term time to sing together in a relaxed environment. There are no auditions, and no previous singing or music experience is required! Songs are taught by ear. Music notation is available to those who read, but reading isn’t necessary. Our aim is to enjoy singing together in harmony and to explore different types of music: traditional, modern and world. We sing for an hour, and provide

toys for the children to play with. We don’t expect the children to be quiet, and we don’t expect full attention from parents! At the end of the session toys are cleared away and we sing a few songs with the children. There is also an evening group on Wednesdays. This is very similar to the afternoon group, minus the babies and toddlers. For both groups, there is a suggested donation of £4 for each session you attend. so why not come along and have a go? For more information, please call 01373 474200, email to radhouseis@aol.com, or just drop in and see what you think. Caroline Radcliffe, songbird leader, Jackdaws Music education trust,

What to expect at Jackdaws 6

What’s It Like At Jackdaws? Lots of people new to Jackdaws ask what to expect from a course here. We can tell you about the fantastic tutors, the beautiful and delightful setting, the friendly atmosphere and the wonderful home - cooked food but to get a better feel for what actually happens at a course here are some comments from tutors and participants. Philip Fowke (piano tutor) One of the features of Jackdaws, and one which has a special appeal to me, is the emphasis put by Jackdaws on the importance of amateur musicians. We live in a time which tends to focus on musical provision for young, talented and aspiring professional musicians. Maureen's vision for Jackdaws was unusual in that, conversely, she placed great importance on the encouragement of adult amateur musicians whatever their age or ability. From the start I shared Maureen’s belief that this section of the musical fraternity was seriously undervalued and inadequate facilities for coaching and tutoring generally available. The very word amateur is often associated in a negative light, but at Jackdaws, Maureen has created an environment which fosters and promotes all those who, for many reasons, have either come to their instrument, or returned to it, later in life in an atmosphere that is both relaxed and

unchallenging. It has been for me, a source of great pleasure to see, with very few exceptions, even the most nervous and initially reluctant, perform at the end of course concert with joy and a sense of achievement. It is rare that such participants don't sign up for the next course to develop their emerging confidence. Jackdaws has a special charm, sense of intimacy and homeliness. In a little valley of great peacefulness and beauty, many come time and time again to enjoy music making in ways they might never have imagined. New friends are made, and the word spreads. May it long continue.

Peter Fowke - piano tutor

Michael Welbourne (participant) By the age of 18 I was playing the piano at quite an advanced level, but none of the teachers I had (excellent pianists themselves) were good at teaching technique; consequently I was at best a rather coarse pianist and felt that I had some how failed to realise my full potential. When I retired, I resolved to take lessons again and see whether I could

get further. I was very fortunate in the teacher I chose who did (and does) a lot for my technique; and he, in turn, suggested that I might profit from going to courses at Jackdaws. Jackdaws courses have become a very important element in my life. I have, I suppose, been attending three or more a year for several years. I went to my first course with some trepidation, expecting to find myself a geriatric surrounded by gifted young people. I found, and regularly find, a congenial and mutually supportive group of people of varying ages, united by a love of music, all keen to improve their understanding and their performance of the works they bring, and all keen to help one another. What Jackdaws provides, over and above what you can get from a private teacher, however good, is, first and foremost, exposure to a range of teachers of the highest quality each with their own distinctive style and insights. So at Jackdaws I have learnt a variety of ways in which one might address different technical and musical problems; and a variety of different ways of working at the piano. Secondly, I have overcome my nervousness about playing in front of people. But for experience at Jackdaws, I don’t think I would ever have performed at the Bristol Music Club. For me it has been a huge privilege working with the various Jackdaws teachers whose courses I have attended

and I am continually amazed at their patience and generosity. I have learnt an enormous amount. I am no longer afflicted with the thought that I have failed to realise my potential, though of course I am always aware that there is long way to go. Actually, nowadays I am more inclined to think that there is very little I couldn’t have a crack at, if only there were time enough. William Carslake (Jackdaws Chamber Choir conductor) ‘Jackdaws is the most replenishing place. Not only do I learn concretely when I’m there (and that’s as a teacher!) but I’m also inspired by the community spirit and the reminder that music is simply that written down. Also Jackdaws lets everyone aspire to great repertoire and great technique and that’s an atmosphere I like to work in. And all of this happens in a beautiful but unfussy place where you can take a break with a jog, a swim or a bit of crayfish-catching! Mary Dodd (participant) I had the BEST time at this workshop! Neil and Penny (Jenkins) and Anna (and Alex) made me feel like an expert! They are sooo very good at making you feel clever and confident. I have enough material to work on for the next 6 months. The highlight was singing a duet with Neil! Best time ever!

Their roles in the life of mankind are various; they appear as guardians, counsellors, guides, judges, and interpreters and cross barriers of culture, language, religion and geography. Many are a force for good but there are also fallen angels, angels of death and others who are spirits of wrath, destruction, confusion and vengeance. In this Christmas programme we explore music associated with angels, the maverick and fallen as well as the divine and perfect. Playing some of the instruments that appear in descriptions and depictions of angels through the ages, as well as other strange and ethereal sounding instruments, we present traditional tunes, dances, songs and carols in a celebration of these heavenly creatures. The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments are leaders in the fields of traditional and early music and share a delight and fascination with the possibilities presented by their unusual instruments. Their repertoire includes medieval, renaissance, baroque and traditional music. from left to right: Eden Stell Guitar Duo Clare Salaman, Joy Smith & Clara Sanabras from Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments The Ministry of Angels

Early Music & Baroque 10

Sing, sing, sing refine your performance skills, build confidence, express your ‘authentic self’ and improve communication.

Friday 21 october - sunday 23 october Al Manere Minstrelsy The music of the medieval minstrel Dufay Collective Course No. 2961 Level: Proficient. Fee £170 The Dufay Collective is an early-music ensemble specialising in Medieval and Renaissance music, and has been performing its unique brand of music since 1987 in a wide ranging repertoire from the middle ages and renaissance. Come and work with the leader of the Dufay, William Lyons and one of their other players on a weekend of medieval instrumental music with tuition on harp, gittern, recorders, flutes, shawms, bagpipes and percussion. Participants can bring their own music, or repertoire can be suggested. Existing ensembles would be welcome. The course will focus on secular medieval repertoire, in particular dance music. The emphasis of the course is not on individual tuition but on ensemble classes: improvisation, arrangement, and the use of traditional playing styles that are all factors in realising very early music.

Friday 27 January - sunday 29 January Sing, sing, sing Evelyn Tubb - vocal tutor with Clive Pollard - piano Course No. 2969 Level: Grade 5 and above. Fee £180 A workshop for singers (and accompanists) who want to refine their performance skills, build confidence, express their ‘authentic self’ and improve communication. Issues of vocal technique, characterisation and interpretation will also be addressed. Students may bring their own choice of repertoire. Accompanists on lute or guitar are also welcome, but they should liaise with a singer first to plan a repertoire. Michael Fields will not be present this year as part of the tutorial team. An informal performance will be given by the students at the end of the weekend, to which guests are welcome.

The Dufy Collective

Friday 14 september sunday 16 september Stylish Baroque Theresa Caudle & Alastair Ross Course No. 2997 Level: Grade 8 and above. Fee £180 Baroque chamber music for pre-formed groups or individuals, preferably on instruments at A415, although it may be possible to accommodate a group playing at A440. Two experts in the field of early music, Theresa Caudle [violin and cornett] and Alastair Ross [harpsichord and organ] will help, encourage and cajole you to greater stylishness in your performance of 17th and 18th century music. The weekend will principally be spent working in small groups, either pre-formed or put together from suitable applicants by the tutors, but one session will be spent with all participants playing together.

Friday 28 october - sunday 30 october The Art of Piano Technique Margaret Fingerhut Course No. 2962 Level: Grade 8 and above. Fee £170 With the Olympics approaching and everyone (or nearly everyone) becoming sports obsessed, the goals of speed and athleticism seem increasingly to be the dominant ethos in piano playing. However, true technical ability is about many things, not just speed, loudness and accuracy. It is about bringing out all the character, emotion and subtlety of the music. This weekend will focus on helping you to obtain a beautiful sound. It will encourage you to explore significant aspects of technique such as voicing, colour, touch and articulation, in order to realise your interpretative vision. We will look at the importance of the right choice of fingering and the many varied ways of pedalling. Of course, help will also be given with the more mechanical aspects involved in improving velocity, finger independence, evenness and strength. We will also discuss performance psychology and how you can make the best use of your practice time to keep your inspiration going! Please bring two pieces of any length. Friday 10 February - sunday 12 February Piano Workshop Philip Fowke Course No. 2971 Level: Grade 5 and above. If you enjoy playing the piano, suffer from nerves, yet long to perform with greater security and confidence, then this is the course

for you. Bring along your favourite pieces for discussion and exploration in a relaxed, informal environment. There is no obligation to perform any piece in full; it may be that you only wish to tackle a few bars at a time. The general standard is from about Grade 5 upwards, though this does not preclude those of a humbler ability. The emphasis is on learning with enjoyment, sharing difficulties with others, and discovering comfortable, practical ways to overcome musical and technical problems. There is no age limit. Participants are encouraged to bring along any duets they may have. These have proved to be very popular and can greatly contribute to the musical and performing experience of the weekend.

Piano

Friday 14 october - sunday 16 october Fantasias Ruth Harte Course No. 2960 Level: Grade 5 and above. Fee £170 Described as a composition for which no other name happens to occur to the composer, from the sixteenth century to the present day, whether miniature or large-scale canvases, the musical ingredients of the fantasy provoke infinite possibilities of interpretation. Considering its essential improvisatory element, can, or should, “fancy” take precedence over form? In his “Dictionary of Music”, Rousseau defines the Fantasie as “a piece of instrumental music that one performs as one composes it”. But should this implied freedom have constraints in order to achieve an organic, authoritative performance? We will explore the balancing of flexibility with precision, relating rhythmic unity to changes in tempi, technical choices for clarity, dexterity, tonequality, colour, texture and the scaling of harmonic growth. In particular, we will work on the need to listen constantly and to trust one's musical instinct, which can actually lead to enjoying one's own playing! The German “phantasien” means to indulge one’s imagination, particularly exemplified by Schumann. In Opus 12 and 17. Beethoven uses “Sonata Quasi una Fantasia” in both his op.27 works. Let alone other classical composers. You have a wide choice up to contemporary repertoire; bring a minimum of two examples.
