Celebrating

25 Years of Jackdaws Jackdaws Bringing Music to Life

Dame Joan Sutherland - June 12th 1993

Introduction www.Facebook.com/JackdawsMusic

2

Another year has zipped past and we really have been as busy as ever.

2018 has been a milestone year for Jackdaws with the 25th anniversary of the grand opening by Dame Joan Sutherland on June 12th 1993.

We hope to start building the new purpose built studio later this summer. We are so grateful for the support we have received for this through our 20Jackdaws fund and in many other ways, and we are greatly looking forward to the grand opening and dedicating of the studio in 2019. It is a source of some sadness to us that one of the great champions of the new studio, Andrew Wall, who was Chair of Trustees at Jackdaws for some 10 years, sadly passed away in September 2017, but we know he would be delighted that after a long journey we are now on our way. I would like to take the opportunity to introduce our recently appointed Chair of Trustees, Mark Hunter. Mark has a long association with Jackdaws going back many years and we were delighted that he was able to join our team of hard working trustees.

Dame Joan Sutherland and Maureen Lehane - June 12th 1993

There will be some disruption during the building work but we hope to keep this to minimum during the weekend courses. Our aspect may not be quite its pleasant self, but we have made some alterations and preparations to try and make everything run smoothly, and I would like to thank you all for your support during this time. We would not be sustainable if we didn’t run the weekend courses so please do support the courses, Jackdaws and tutors during this period.

Often overlooked as either a native tongue, or the very able second language of many others, singing in English presents its own technical challenges. It is sometimes not considered in the same depth dramatically, as it is believed that knowing what the words mean will sufficiently address the context of the piece. This course seeks to address this imbalance!

The Singer as Artist Alison Wells Accompanist: Richard Shaw Fri 1 - Sun 3 March 2019 Course No. 3321 Fee: £220 | Level: All Solo Study Course

There is a wealth of song to explore and discover in the English language; from Purcell to Britten by way of Barber, Copland and Sondheim.

A singer needs a colour palette as varied as a painter; find your vocal colour palette through text and technique. This course will help you to connect your imagination and understanding of text to underpin and enhance your vocal technique – and vice versa. It’s easy to think of communication and technique as being separate strands of our learning, but getting them to work together is most satisfying and liberating. By doing so, the singer can improve their connection with the audience and better express the intentions of the composer and librettist. This course is suitable for anyone who has experience of solo singing in front of an audience. Repertoire is free choice of song, opera or oratorio, and the

Alison Wells only stipulation is that you must understand, in word for word detail, the text you are singing, especially if it is not in your native language. Bring several pieces to explore, and enjoy finding different ways of making them come alive. You may also wish to attend with a fellow singer to work on duets. The classes will be informal, with constructive participant feedback encouraged. We may use movement, so wear comfortable clothing. Most importantly – bring an open mind!

This lively course will concentrate on repertoire, style, technique and practice methods. Additionally, the issues concerning the choice of music for diploma, grade exams and skeleton score study,

improvisation, duets and more will all be discussed. Participants from Part One and Part Two are welcome to book for the other course as observers.

Philip Fowke Piano Workshop A New Departure Philip Fowke Fri 13 - Sun 15 September 2019 Course No. 3348 | Fee: £210 Level: All Solo Study Course An innovative approach where repertoire is not required in advance. A New Departure is designed for those who feel that they have never really discovered how to learn a piece with confidence and security; addressing fundamental issues

which are so often overlooked in the earlier stages of learning. This course offers an opportunity for everyone to contribute on an equal basis, without nerves, and above all, with pleasure in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Participants are not required to prepare or bring any music; a selection of very short pieces, or even just a few bars of an elementary piece, will be provided by Philip in the first session. These pieces will be studied and fingered in such a way as to make them ready for performance; there will be an informal concert on the Sun afternoon for those who wish to play, but there is no obligation to take part.

“Beautiful location and Jackdaws has everything it needs for such courses.” - Participant on Philip Fowke’s New Departure

Explore the rich and varied repertoire of musicians from court and city in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The course is for players of wind and brass instruments: cornett, sackbut, shawm, dulcian, recorder and crumhorn. Music will come from the part books associated with major European courts including that from the English court of James I and Charles I, the Regensburg part books and those from the royal court in Copenhagen, as well as dance and masque music by Praetorius, Holborne, Adson, the Hessen brothers, Susato and others. Players should have their own instruments and be of a sufficient technical ability to enjoy this music at its best.

or call 01373 812383

Please bring your instrument (or voice, if you’re a singer) to help you make the most of the opportunity to move from ‘panic’ to ‘poise’, so that you can enjoy performing and sharing your music.

Performing music can be enriching, yet many musicians experience anxiety about performing in public, and either struggle through it or avoid performing altogether.

“Wendy created a warm, interested atmosphere… I believe that the things she taught us will be a great help to me.”

We may describe how we feel when we’re anxious about performing as a fear of failure, dread, nervousness, self-doubt, tension, stress and panic. We may aspire to feel alert yet calm, confident, energised yet relaxed, in a state of flow, in ‘the zone’ and poised.

Chamber Music Weekend Sarah Francis, Robert Codd, Ian Mitchell and Stephen Gutman Fri 19 - Sun 21 July 2019 Course No. 3340 | Fee: £230 Level: Advanced Ensemble Course

This weekend workshop will explore practical strategies – drawn from Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) in particular – that can help in managing performance anxiety. Participants will have time to explore performing short excerpts in a safe, supportive environment and experiment with the strategies learnt, to discover which ones may be the most effective for them.

Always a hugely popular course, which offers the opportunity for wind players to study and perform ensemble music from the 18th-21st centuries, with professional coaching by leading tutors.

Can I do that?

Our courses are labelled according to ability, this is just a guide and relies on self-evaluation; you may find yourself with participants of greater or lesser ability than yourself on a course of any level. You can always call us for help deciding if a course is suitable for you. Course Levels: All - Open to anyone who wants to work with the tutor or within the theme of that particular course.

www.Facebook.com/JackdawsMusic

Course content will reflect a variety of repertoire; you should feel confident to tackle some of the repertoire suggested at whatever level you are currently working. Tutors will adapt their teaching on an individual basis.

18

Beginner - For people who have a little limited experience of the voice or relevant instrument, perhaps they have sung/do sing in a choir or played an instrument at school. You may not be able to read music and do not need to have had any formal training at all, or may have forgotten any formal training you have had and want to get started again.

Intermediate - You may have had some individual tuition at some point in your life and want to refresh this. You may be moving on to the next stage, e.g. thinking about having regular lessons or playing/ singing in a more formal ensemble on a more regular basis; perhaps you are working towards a grade exam or performance in some capacity. You can probably read some music.

Our values are

access and inclusion

Advanced - You have had some individual tuition with a teacher and play or sing regularly and probably solo. You may be working towards an advanced grade exam or diploma or be a current or recently graduated music student. You may be a more seasoned performer who wants to work on a specific area or work in ensembles.

Our football-focused 2018 OperaPLUS was a production of Donizetti’s La fille du régiment as “The Team Mascot”. Workshops and performances took place with schools spanning Somerset and Wiltshire. A music lead teacher of one of the participating schools reported “I can honestly say, that in all the years I have been working in schools, The Team Mascot was one of the best arts projects I have had the privilege of being involved with.” That’s sounds like a golden goal to us!

Jack’s takes place 4:30-6pm Friday evenings during term time. In March, the Year of Brass was a loud, shining example of how much kids love making music. For a 25th anniversary double bill, we teamed up with Onyx Brass, who celebrate their own 25th birthday in 2018, for another instalment of our Award-winning “Year of…” project. Some children participating had been learning an instrument for less than two months when they took part in the Grand Finale concert playing music by Rossini, Duke Ellington and Timothy Jackson! To make the event extra special, Onyx judged the Final of our Birthday Fanfare competition declaring Cheddar First School worthy winners.

Once again, the Summer Production sold out, with hardly any promotion from us, proving you need to book early if you want to get involved!

Help Jackdaws Inspire the next Generation!

Led once again by Saffron, Will and Sarah, the amazing productionof Hamlet, accompanied by the music of Mahler and design inspired by David Carson, means we never know what to expect! “I am grateful to have made new friends and spent a week making art and music” 29 July – 2 August 2019 After telling the tragic life of Mozart in 2017, Song Story took to the skies to explore The Planets as depicted by Gustav Holst. The music in his famous suite was written just over 100 years ago, so the Song Story team reassembled to work with pupils from 5 SEND schools across Somerset to create a unique theatrical performance celebrating not just the music, but to tell the story of a lost Alien who was trying to find his way home.

Jackdaws’ expanding and award winning programme of events and projects in Somerset Schools (and now in Wiltshire and Devon too) provides a vital opportunity for young people to take part in inspirational music activities and to learn the joy and satisfaction that comes from making music. You can help us offer these opportunities to even more young people by adding a £10 donation when you book your course. If you can also Gift Aid it then that will add another £2.50. We would be extremely grateful.

Jackdaws education programme offers quality activities at all levels – for young people who have never picked up an instrument, all the way through to the Mauren Lehane Vocal Awards for aspiring young professional singers – and your support will help many more young people experience the same joy you find in making music. To add you donation simply tick the box on the booking form.
