LEARNING TODAY LEADING TOMORROW

Elementary Level Angels Write Letters to El Paso Children Literacy consultant RoseAnn Smith led a writing activity in Mrs. Rangel’s MEJ1 class on August 14th. Students wrote letters to children in El Paso, offering them blessings and kind thoughts following the tragic events of August 3rd. The IWA community is proud of our Angels for helping bring a sense of peace to others during a difficult time.

Art Club and Art Class Elementary Level Angels are getting creative during art class and Art Club! Art Club students worked with clay during their first meeting and MEJ2 students made angel hand-prints to remember Venerable Jeanne de Matel and September 11th. From art to chess, Elementary Level students are able to explore their interests and develop their talents by joining a variety of clubs and organizations. See Angels in action

Fall Fun Night

The Elementary Level hosted its annual Fall Fun Night on Friday, October 4th. The theme was Dia de los Muertos and Angels of all ages enjoyed moon jumps, a rock wall, face painting, pony rides, a haunted “jail,” food trucks, music, a cake walk, and so much more! Thank you to our Elementary Level PTO for making this year’s Fall Fun Night such a success.

House Sorting Ceremony During the Middle Level’s House Sorting Ceremony on August 16th, new students spun the House wheel to find out which house they would join this school year: Altruismo, Isibindi, Rêveur, or Amistad. Angels cheered on their new members and welcomed them to their new Houses! In 2017, the Middle Level implemented the house system to engage students in leadership, team-building, and rapport across grade levels. Using friendly competition, the students are encouraged to thrive in academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities, school spirit, and community service.

Enrichment Workshops The Middle Level hosted its First Friday Enrichment Workshops on September 6th. Students signed up for workshops of their choice, ranging in activities from Line Dancing to Self-Defense. While the Enrichment workshops give our students an opportunity to learn more about a topic that interests them, it also gives teachers an opportunity to lead a workshop based on their skills, talents, and interests.

Land Commissioner George P. Bush Teaches Texas Map Lesson

Middle Level students were visited by former U.S. Navy Reserve officer and current Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush on August 23rd. During his visit, Commissioner Bush took a tour of the Middle Level classrooms before teaching a map lesson for Middle Level Texas History students in the Library Media Resource Center. Students gathered in small groups and wore gloves while they studied maps used during Bush’s lesson, similar to the way archivists interact with primary source maps.

High School Getting Hyped During the First Pep Rally of the Year The High School Level celebrated the first pep rally of the year on September 20th. High School Level students were accompanied by Middle and Elementary Level students for the Luau-themed pep rally. Middle Level students were sorted by their Houses: Amistad, Isibindi, Reveur, and Altruismo, and mixed in with the High School Level students in the crowd. Our Angels played Guide-the-Guy and an intense game of Tug-of-War. The battle-cries at this pep rally were some of the loudest we’ve ever heard. Keep up the energy, Angels!

Alumni Visit Angels at LA Tech Presentation Alumni Madeline Thompson and Nick Lee visited our Angels on August 20th to speak about Louisiana Tech University and life after high school. When asked how they felt Incarnate Word Academy prepared them for college, Nick said, “the Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses set us ahead of our curriculum. I finished a lot of my general studies classes here at IWA.” Madeline also said that Incarnate Word Academy counselors “stress the SAT and ACT, and that helped a lot with our scholarships.” At Incarnate Word Academy, we strive to prepare our Angels for the bright futures that await them.

Physics Students Test the Limits of a Watermelon Mrs. Earley’s AP Physics 2 class ended the first week of school on an exciting note when they tested the elastic limit of a watermelon - getting more than 700 rubber bands around it before the watermelon finally burst!
