ROTARY SLEIGH ROUTES Rotarians in Ivybridge are set to embark on their biggest-ever tour of the town with their Santa sleigh this Christmas. This year’s route includes over 150 new homes in Harford Mews and Lucerne Fields and will take 11 nights to complete. Members of the Rotary Club will be joined by Ivybridge Young Farmers as they visit all the streets in the town. The tour starts on Monday, 3rd December, with each night’s visits starting at 6pm.

SANTAS ON A BIKE Around about 150 Santas will ride down Fore Street in Ivybridge On Saturday, 1st December, at 12.30pm on their way to the Little Harbour Children’s Hospice in St Austell. The ride is to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West, which provides care for families who have children with life-shortening illnesses. This will be the third year that the ride has passed through Ivybridge, with last year’s street collection in Ivybridge raising £588.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL Christmas trees decorated by local groups, clubs, schools and businesses will be on show between 10.30am-4pm at St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival on 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th of December. Entry is free and there will also be chlidren’s activities, stalls, a raffle and refreshments. See the advert on page 16 for more details.

CAROL CONCERT Erme WI Ivybridge is holding a carol service at St Austin’s Priory on Tuesday, 11th December, 7pm. The collection will be for Devon Air Ambulance. Everyone welcome.

CHRISTMAS STALL The Brent Island Trust will have a Christmas stall outside South Brent village shop on Saturday, 1st December, from 10am until 12 noon. There will be a tombola, gifts and a cake/produce stall as well as carol singing.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE Christmas comes to Ashburton on Thursday, 6th December, with the town celebrating with stalls, lights, food and music. Ashburton Christmas Fayre gets underway at 4pm and everyone is welcome to come and start the season of goodwill with a good time.

Brent Singers present ‘A Quintessential English Christmas’, a selection of festive pieces, on Saturday, 8th December, at 7.30pm in St Petroc’s Parish Church, South Brent. The evening will include festive English favourites from Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’ and local composer Ben Haigh-Marshall, plus music by Holst, Warlock and John Rutter. Directed by Matthew Searles and featuring Freddie Crowley (baritone) and Ben Horden (organ) and the choir of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Buckfast. Entry is free, retiring collection.

This is an easy arrangement to make which all the family can help with. This example uses a catering-size tin can, but any size will work. You’ll need: • Tin can • Felt • Ribbon • Floral foam, • Double-sided tape • Candle • Garden foliage • Bunch of roses • Fir cones Instructions Cut your felt to fit tightly around the tin. Stick the double-sided tape all around the top and bottom edges, then stick the felt in position and add the ribbon.

SANTA’S GROTTO Santas will be in his Grotto at the Old School Community Centre in South Brent on Saturday, 15th December, in aid of South Brent & District Caring.

Soak the floral foam and cut to size, place in tin. Place the candle in the centre of the oasis and add the foliage. Cut the roses to different heights and use the fir cones to fill in any gaps. If placing the arrangement on a polished wood surface make sure you put it on a mat. If you prefer a rustic look use hessian, string and seed heads such as teasels. Or if you like glitz add Xmas baubles. A number of these arrangements along the centre of a table or in a window look highly effective. Instead of using floral foam you could use a container filled with water but don’t include a candle. We hope you enjoy making this arrangement. PLAY PARK PROJECT WANTS TOKEN SUPPORT A group of mums and volunteers in Modbury is urging people to check out the Champernowne play park project at their local Tesco. Champernowne Play Park Group is asking for support for its campaign to fund replacement play equipment at the once muchused Champernowne play park. Once a proper play park with an appealing range of play equipment, over time most of the play equipment fell into disrepair and has had to be removed, leaving just two rather sad-looking swings. The campaign has been selected

by Tesco for its Bags of Help Scheme, and shoppers are being asked to donate their tokens to support the campaign. Monica Yunnie, from the steering group, said: “We are looking for the community to think of us when they shop in their local Tesco store by placing their shopping tokens in our box. The new play area will mean families and children will once again have a safe space to play.” People can support the project at Tesco Express in Ivybridge and Tesco Extra at Lee Mill.

THEATRE TRIP

Children at The Erme Primary School will enjoy a visit to the theatre thanks to the generousity of a local legal services company. Richardsons Legal Services stepped in to enable the children to see Dick Whittington at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. David Richardson said: “We were looking for a way to give children an experience of the arts and, we were able to work with the Friends to offer a fun and enjoyable theatre experience.”

A young Ivybridge girl with dyspraxia overcame her condition to do a sponsored cycle ride to support a foundation which has helped her and her family. Erin McPartlin, 8, was diagnosed with dyspraxia in January this year following 18 months of assessments. Dyspraxia or DCD (developmental coordinatiown disorder) is a life-long condition which affects the planning and processing of gross and fine motor skills. The Dyspraxia Foundation, a charity which supports families, funds new research and raises awareness of the condition, has helped Erin, mum Clare and the whole family since the diagnosis, so when Erin heard that it was starting a campaign to raise £30,000 to mark its 30th anniversary, she wanted to help. “Erin eventually decided on a sponsored cycle – 30km in 30 days,” said mum Clare. “Learning to ride a bike can be incredibly challenging for someone with dyspraxia, but after physiotherapy and

The winners of this year’s Ivybridge Community Awards have been announced. Christine Wroe has been chosen by Ivybridge Town Council to receive The David Britton Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of the amazing voluntary work she does. From volunteering at the library, arranging activities and events, delivering books to housebound residents and taking the time to chat to them, helping with the Credit Union and Chewsday Lunches and also raising funds for charity, her efforts benefit so many people in Ivybridge. She always has time for people and that is a greatly valued attribute. The Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Award goes to The Lions Club of Ivybridge in recognition of the vast amount of charity work undertaken by their volunteers, from arranging the fun day at the rugby club and helping with the Christmas Lights switch on to fundraising to support many local charities. The town mayor will formally present the awards at the full town council meeting on Monday, 3rd December.

A special event in South Brent this month will mark the end of WWI Commemorations. Homecoming, on Saturday, 15th December, in South Brent Village Hall, will comprise music, entertainment and dancing to celebrate the conclusion of the ‘war to end all wars’. A limited number of 100 tickets, priced £10 to include supper, are available from artworks. A licensed bar will be open during the event and Totnes-based ‘Band Friday’ will provide a selection of music, including tunes from the period. The organisers would be delighted if patrons choose to come in appropriate costume, but this is entirely voluntary. One of Creative Arts Department two Remembrance Day installations

STUDENTS REMEMBER A series of assemblies were held at Ivybridge Community College during the week of 5th-9th November to commemorate the end of the First World War and to remember all who sacrificed their lives to ensure that we have a safer and democratic society today. On Remembrance Day, students and staff attended Ivybridge’s Remembrance Parade and Service, not only representing the college, but also as representatives of a range of youth groups. On Monday, 12th November, the college held its own Remembrance service, with the entire school community observing a two minute silence. Chris Martin, the college’s safeguarding officer

and a former serviceman, read the poem ‘For the Fallen’ and Year 11 student Harry Davies played the Last Post and the Reveille. Also on the Monday, students in both military and college uniform visited the Ivybridge War Memorial to show their respects and to personally lay the wreath on behalf of students, staff and governors of ICC. In addition, the Creative Arts Department produced two Remembrance Day installations, one of which is on display in the college showing a display of poppies, and the other at the entrance of the college comprising 100 ceramic poppies and a silhouette of a soldier.

LIGHT-HEARTED TALK TO FINISH YEAR GIVE PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH THE BIG PUSH People are being encourgaed to help give perinatal mental health difficulties the ‘Big Push’ by joining a family-friendly 5km buggy push in Christmas fancy dress. The NCT Plymouth Big Push event is taking place Central Park, Plymouth, on Sunday, 2nd December, at 10am. It will raise vital funds to support the many new parents who experience mental health issues around pregnancy. NCT Plymouth’s Big Push fundraising efforts will go directly to contributing to the promotion of positive mental health, breaking

An illustrated talk, ‘P is for Projects all over the moor, Q is for Questions – what’s it all for?’ is the final talk of the year at the Devon Rural Archive. Parishscapes, part of the Moor Than Meets the Eye landscape partnership scheme, is a community heritage project that has been telling the story of Dartmoor from a parish perspective since January 2015. Fourteen parishes have, over the last few years, collectively developed and delivered a staggering variety of volunteer-led initiatives that explore natural, cultural and built heritage in a range of creative and innovative ways. Project ideas come from the communities themselves and all are a celebration of sense of people, place and the qualities that make

POND DIPPING Children in years 5 and 6 at Manor School have been pond dipping in the school pond with the new large pond nets recently provided by the FRIENDS. The children are working on a science topic on lifecycles and have been studying the life stages of amphibians. They found many pond creatures, including whirligig beetles, ramshorn snails and leeches.

CHOOSE RESPECT Stowford School said ‘Choose Respect’ during anti-bullying week All children enjoyed lots of different activities during the week, including art, stories and songs as well as dedicated assemblies and whole class discussion times. The week began with ‘Odd Sock Day’ which really helped to get the children involved in a fun way and introduce this important week. Special assemblies also took place for each Key Stage with a focus upon making positive choices in different situations. Children in Key Stage 2 also took part in an assembly focusing on ‘cyber bullying’ to help raise awareness and action against this kind of bullying. Using the theme of ‘Choose Respect’ during the week, children shared their own interpretations of what this means to them through making individual posters. The posters included pictures of people respected by the children and why, as well as their own thoughts on what respect means. Chloe and George of Eagles class in Year 6 shared their thoughts whilst making their

posters. Chloe said: “It’s important to think about bullying because you will know what to do if someone is being bullied.” George described what his poster portrayed: “I wanted to make a poster showing that all people are different but they all should be treated with the same respect.” All classes had the opportunity to walk around the school and view the posters made by different year groups that were displayed in a ‘corridor of respect’. Everyone has had a very valuable

and insightful week thinking about bullying and headteacher Mrs Williams has been working with the School Council to find out more about the children’s’ perceptions. On a positive note, two children from Year 5 spontaneously shared with Mrs Williams and a visiting parent that they think bullying is not a problem for Stowford school. Fletcher of Year 5 said “there isn’t bullying at our school, sometimes people just fall out but there is no actual bullying and Eva of Year 5 said “I agree!”.

REMEMBRANCE On Friday, 9th November, Cornwood Primary came together to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. After a collective worship, where photos, forget-me-not cards, medals and a notification from the War Office from members of staff were shared, children were split into groups to make poppies and their own forget-me-not cards. Another group of children made 27 very special hand print poppies, named with all the soldiers from the village who lost their

EDEN VISIT Children from years three and four at Manor School became forest rangers for the day when they visited the Eden Project. As part of their work on forest biomes they looked closely

at the rainforest that provided them with water, food and shelter. Exploring both the rainforest and Mediterranean biomes gave the children first-hand experience of the varied environments that offer differing eco-systems to a variety of plants.

Duck was being very rude to his friend Dot but with the help of the children, Duck learned how to use his manners. Children were able to take part in the retelling of the story using a puppet and afterwards they had the chance to draw Duck’s eyes in the style of the illustrator Oliver Tallec.

Ivybridge Post Office at 49-50 Fore Street

POST OFFICE SERVICES IN IVYBRIDGE With the rising population and improved adult literacy, the 19th century witnessed a rapid increase in letter writing and the sending of greetings cards. Mail distribution was greatly improved through the development of the railway network and Sir Rowland Hill introduced reforms to the postal system with a uniform rate of postage regardless of distance, the Penny Post. Civil servant Sir Henry Cole is credited with devising the concept of sending greetings cards at Christmas time, introducing the very first one in 1843. Early cards rarely depicted winter or religious themes, instead favouring flowers and other highly-ornamental designs that reminded the recipient of the approach of spring. Images of the nativity and snow scenes came later, as did that of the robin. Pillar boxes were introduced in 1853 and were painted dark green. It wasn’t until 1874 that the colour changed to bright red to increase their visibility. The Post Office was now expanding into new areas. In 1861 the Post Office Savings Bank opened, offering an alternative to traditional banks and nine years later a telegraph service was launched. A directory describing the postal arrangements for Ivybridge in 1878 stated that ‘The Post, Money Order, Telegraph, Government Insurance and Annuity Office and Savings Bank’ were located at Mr William H. Mackay, the Post Master in Fore Street. A few years later, in 1883, the Post Office started a parcel delivery

service despite stern opposition from the major railway companies who previously managed the transportation of parcels. As Post Offices provided a focal point for the community they needed to be in a prominent position. A document dated July 1898, submitted by W. Vincent, Carpenter, Builder, Cabinet Maker and Undertaker of Western Road, Ivybridge, records a sum of £733 10s to construct a three-storey building at 49-50 Fore Street. Once completed, the new Ivybridge Post Office certainly made a statement in contrast to the adjoining buildings. The expansion of services at Post Offices continued and from 1909 it became the principal payment agency for social security benefits, which began with old-age pensions. Interestingly, Stowford Paper Mill was to become the supplier of pension payment slip paper from 1926, business which was to remain in Ivybridge until paper-based pension books were phased out in 2003. By 1912 the General Post Office had branched out into telephone services when it bought the system from the National Telephone Company. The Ivybridge telephone exchange was located above the Post Office until the early 1960s. CHANGES IN LEGAL SERVICES Recent changes in the legal services market mean that companies of non-solicitors are now able to offer legal services. It is important that people recognise the difference between these companies and that of solicitors. Companies that are not solicitors don’t have professional obligations to their clients, eg solicitors must act in their clients’ best interests and therefore cannot sell clients something that they do not need, they must warn them fully of the risk of the transaction and they cannot cold-call the public. Also, all solicitors firms are protected by professional indemnity insurance. It is, therefore, vital that you ensure that the people advising you are qualified to do so. Generally, solicitors will complete six years of training

before qualifying, whereas some companies refer to their staff as ‘lawyers’ after completing a short training course. It is also a common misconception that ‘legal service’ companies will be cheaper than solicitors. Not necessarily... They often advertise ‘offers’, but fees can run into thousands of pounds. On top of this, they may try and push services that you do not require or incorrectly advise you to enter into something. To check that a person providing a legal service is a solicitor, look for them on the Law Society’s website. He also covered the importance of the application of ethics to the pure science. Because of the Christmas Lady’s Lunch on 11th December there will be no ordinary club meeting in December. In January, as the first Tuesday is New Year’s Day, the club’s January meeting will be on Tuesday, 8th, at Wrangaton Golf Club. BUSY TIME Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers have competed in numerous recent races and have enjoyed considerable success. Cleo Perry representing Devon continued her fine form at the Great West Run in Exeter, finishing 1st fv45, 2nd Devon Lady and 6th female overall in an excellent time of 1.25.19. Rose Bralsford also had a good run and achieved a PB of 1.53.13. Richard Lander Stow completed the tough marathon course at the Eden Project in a time of 3.52.52, whilst in the half marathon Sarah Hirons was 44th in 1.41.13 and Dan Marks 217th in 1.53.37. In the Plym Trail Marathons, held over a weekend, Mike Hoskin was 2nd on the Saturday in a time of 3.18.18 and on Sunday ran a time of 3.34.48. Sarah Salt also ran on both days and recorded times of 4.35.05 (Saturday) and 4.55.52 (Sunday). Dan Salt, running on the Sunday, had a time of 4.16.33. Seventeen Harriers lined up for the Tavy 7. Simon Fitze was 1st mv40, Nick Bristow 2nd mv45, Dave Engledew 2nd mv55, Jaine Swift 2nd fv60, Steve Watson 1st mv65 and Alison Engledew 1st fv60. At the Dartmoor Vale 10K, Simon Swift was 14th in 42.07, whilst Rose Bralsford ran 1.55.48 in the half marathon. Dave Church (4.18.07), Allister Bristow (4.28.07) and Liz Bowden (4.42.04) ran well at the very tough Snowdonia Marathon. Cleo Perry represented Devon again at the Gloucester 10K, achieving a PB and breaking her own club fv45 category record with a time of 38.03. Andy Trigg and son Ben tackled the very tough two-day Original Mountain Marathon in the Black Mountains in Wales and both successfully completed the course.
