CHILDREN VISIT FIRE STATION Sixteen children and their childminders visited Plympton Fire Station at the end of February for a talk about staying safe out and about, the role of the fire fighters and fire safety in the home. They had the chance to look around a fire engine and a water bowser. The children also saw the fire fighters uniform and got to try on some child-sized hats and jackets.

NEW PLAN FOR SUPERMARKET PROPOSAL A scheme to reinvigorate the “whole town centre experience in Ivybridge” could be at the heart of a bid for up to £25 million of central government funding. The government’s Future High Street Fund is inviting bids for a share of £675m worth of funding, with each successful project awarded up to £25 million to support regeneration, innovation, transport, housing and public services in town centres. South Hams District Council believes Ivybridge could benefit from this fund and has agreed to submit a bid. In a feasibility study produced for the council, proposals include a 18,000sqft supermarket on Leonards Road car park, additional parking provision for between 6381 vehicles, a hospitality unit and possibly a drive-thru facility. There would be improved river public realm as well as better access to the leisure centre. The plan would see the police station, skate park and play area and scout hut near the leisure centre relocated, while the public

toilets, hairdressers and nursery building would remain. Following consultations after an initial plan last December to build a supermarket on Leonards Road car park was paused when concerns over the potential loss of car parking were raised, SHDC is proposing that the supermarket plan becomes part of a bigger scheme looking at the whole area around the car park. Cllr John Tucker, leader of SHDC, said: “After we paused these proposals, we spent a day in the town talking to many different people. “Overall the findings were fascinating, there was not one single viewpoint and mixed feelings about the proposals. “Many people said that they would welcome a discount supermarket and said that the town desperately needed it. “There was a strong feeling from many that something needed to be done, they just weren’t sure how or what.” i Go to @theimag on Facebook to see

SUPPORT GROUP A local breastfeeding mum is aiming to launch a breastfeeding support group to fill the gap left by reduced services due to funding cuts. Lisa Lines has created Ivybridge Latch On, a community interest company, and is currently raising money for the first year’s insurance cost so that qualified peer supporters can offer faceto-face advice to breastfeeding mums, and mums-to-be hoping

to breastfeed, in Ivybridge. Once the first group is up and running, Lisa plans to offer additional services such as breast pump hire and ante natal seminars. Lisa is also keen to ensure that mums who are unable to fulfil their breastfeeding goals have access to information and advice. Lukesland Gardens’ well-loved tearoom opens for the spring season with an exciting addition – a new kitchen extension to the existing Victorian billiard room. The new facility is far removed from the trestle tables used to serve tea and home-made cake when the gardens first started opening through the National Garden Scheme in the late 1980s. The simple soup and bread and cheese lunches now served have proved so popular that the over-stretched service provided a strong case for an alteration to the historic building. The Howells therefore decided to apply for planning permission to add a proper kitchen to the tea room by restoring a building in the courtyard at the back of the house that

was demolished in the 1930s As well as the kitchen, there is a cosy fireside seating area and a sheltered veranda facing into the re-landscaped courtyard. The new building is being called the Max Pugh Room, in recognition of the architect who has helped with many projects at Lukesland over the years. The kitchen facility makes Lukesland an ideal place for meetings, workshops, family parties and small weddings. Lukesland held a very successful Hound of the Baskervilles film night at the beginning of March. There was a screening of the 1960s Peter Cushing version of the story which was partly shot at Lukesland. People dressed in Victorian costume and enjoyed a traditional meal of cottage pie and English desserts. The evening raised £410 for St Petroc’s Church.

Ivybridge Short Mat Bowls Club held its annual charity tournament at the beginning of March at Ivybridge CC, with this year’s event supporting Ivybridge Ring and Ride.

Twenty-eight teams from west Devon and east Cornwall attended and raised £800 for the charity. The tournament was won by a South Brent team, with Crownhill Methodist in second place.

The old Post Office in Fore Street was built at the turn of the 20th century. This had followed a period of rapid expansion by the General Post Office (GPO) with diversification into banking, parcel delivery and telephone services. In the early years of telephones, exchanges often had a single operator, generally responsible for other post office work. Few households in Britain would have had telephones, they were more the domain of business with calls relatively expensive. Lee & Son, the millers located almost opposite the Post Office, had the telephone number 4, the single digit giving an indication of just how few telephone numbers existed. Those lucky enough to have a telephone (referred to as subscribers) rented it from the GPO along with the house wiring and the connection to the local network, known as a distribution point. The first telephone exchanges were of course entirely manual systems requiring human operators to connect a call from one subscriber to another. As demand for telephone services increased, particularly after WWII, larger exchanges emerged. These consisted of plug boards – large vertical panels containing banks of jacks, each of which represented a subscriber’s telephone line. The switchboard operators would then make the necessary connections with the relevant cords. Switchboard operators, or telephonists as they were referred to, needed to have a clear speaking voice and were regarded as having good jobs. One telephonist in Ivybridge warrants special mention. Miss Phoebe Phillips, together with the services of her father Mr William Phillips, were responsible for the continuity of telephone services every night from 8pm to 8am and every weekend for 28 years up to the introduction of an automated system. Phoebe knew most people’s telephone numbers in Ivybridge from memory. Having a familiar voice at the end of the telephone asking the customary question “number please?” was always reassuring and her calmness in the face of many distressing situations brought her much praise from the local community. Manually-operated switchboards were of course both labour and cost-intensive, inhibiting growth

and often creating bottlenecks in the network. To alleviate the situation, the Post Office began to introduce automatic switching, rolling out a programme to replace all old exchanges. With Ivybridge growing during the 1960s, local MPs were lobbying in Parliament for new

telephone capacity. In response, a new telephone exchange was introduced using the latest technology and housed in a purpose-built building beside the Congregational Church. The normal progression from manual to automatic was through the introduction of a UAX, (Unit Automatic Exchange). In the case of Ivybridge, it was a UAX13 which could be expanded by adding units (racks of equipment) as demand grew. With so many people in Ivybridge requesting telephones, an unprecedented three UAXs were interconnected and by the end of 1962 all the equipment had been installed and was operational. SGT PEPPER’S TRIBUTE The Beatles’ ground-breaking 1967 Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album is the inspiration behind Mark Morris Dance Group’s Pepperland, which comes to Theatre Royal Plymouth on Tuesday, 16th, and Wednesday 17th April. Pepperland is legendary choreographer Mark Morris’ unique tribute to the 50th anniversary of the release of the iconic album, hailed as the firstever ‘art rock’ album and widely regarded as the best rock and roll album of all time.

LOCAL HISTORY EXHIBITION A week-long local history exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lee Moor public hall is being held this month. The exhibition, open daily between the 6th and 13th April, 2-5pm and 7-9pm, looks at the links between Lee Moor Village and the china clay industry and the lives of its people, both at work and at play. Admission is free.

EASTER CRAFT FAIR An Easter craft fair is being held on Saturday, 6th April, 10am12.30pm, in the Old School Community Centre in South Brent. As well as crafts there will be tea, coffee, cakes, tombola, a raffle and lots more. All proceeds to the Old School Community Centre’s ‘Raise the Roof’ fund.

WILD & WONDROUS How Dartmoor was portrayed in art, 1750-1920, is the subject of an illustrated talk by Peter F Mason at the Devon Rural Archive on Thursday, 4th April, at 7pm. Once described as a ‘dreary mountainous tract’, Dartmoor soon became the epitome of the picturesque. The transformation in the popular view of the moor was largely brought about through the imagination of visiting and local artists; JMW Turner was a tourist and his work inspired others to follow in his footsteps. The local moorland has inspired generations of artists, and this illustrated talk will trace how the region has been portrayed in art since the mid-18th century. The popular open gardens scheme each spring and summer is one of the most enjoyable and inspiring ways people raise funds for St Luke’s Hospice. GUESTS This term, Sparkwell School has welcomed several guests including Sir Gary Streeter, MP, who came to answer some of the older children’s questions about the government’s environmental policy. Year 5 and 6 enjoyed completing their Bikeability course, including a cycle ride through the lanes. The older children also had a great session at the Apple Store in Plymouth to increase their understanding of coding and the

school took part in a scooter event at Prime. The new EYFS classroom extension is finally complete and we are now settled in and delighted with the extra space this has given us. In the middle of all this, we had an Ofsted inspection and are pleased to say we are still a good school, receiving praise for our ‘innovative curriculum’ and ‘inclusive ethos’; the full report is on the school’s website.

SWIMMING SUCCESS A squad of 12 swimmers helped Woodlands Park swim their way to the top at the Devonport Royal Primary Team Challenge Gala at the beginning of March. After the heats, in which three teams

were entered, one of the girls team and a boys team made it to the finals. The girls pushed hard to clinch second place. Next it was the boys’ turn, who stormed ahead to claim the trophy. Both teams have secured places in the next round.

v Yealmpton STAND UP TO BULLYING Behaviour lead Mr Pepper and school behaviour governor Ms Street led a ‘stand up to bullying’ assembly at Yealmpton School on Wednesday, 27th February. They shared information on what bullying is, why it happens and what can be done to keep Yealmpton Primary School a ‘bully free school’. To engage the children in the process and give them the chance to lead this Mr Pepper and Ms Street have put an advert out for ‘anti-bullying ambassadors’. Each child will have the chance

in school to design a poster explaining why they would make a great ‘anti-bullying ambassador’. Mr Pepper and Ms Street will then choose one child from each class to be an ‘anti-bullying ambassador.’ The team will meet each half-term to think of, set up and lead ways to keep Yealmpton a ‘bully free school’. PANCAKE DAY Key stage one children at Manor Primary School spent the day playing with and exploring the ingredients involved in making pancakes. In the role play area, they dressed up as chefs and used scales, sieves and mixing bowls to create imaginary batter with pretend ingredients. Throughout the rest of the day the learning was linked to making pancakes. During PE they practised their balancing by having pancake races with obstacles and the children also had a go at flipping some pretend pancakes.

PERFORMING ARTS During February, Year 3 at Stowford School had the opportunity to experience a performing arts workshop led by industry professionals. Amy Clarke and Christopher Hamilton from Plymouth Performing Arts Academy worked with the classes as they learnt a song and dance routine to ‘Revolting Children’ from the musical Matilda. The school is also fortunate to have an experienced teacher of performing arts, Miss Atterbury, who is running a weekly after-school club. Each week, a lucky group of Year 1 and 2 children are having a wonderful time finding their own voice and expression in this new club. CREATIVE COSTUMES World Book Day was again an overwhelming success at The Erme Primary School. The children looked fantastic and loved revealing which characters they were. In the afternoon, the school split into house groups where older children supported younger children with their reading. The house captains then hosted a book quiz about many classic

CORNISH DELIGHT Not only was her title ‘Cornish delight’ but young florist Elaine Reynolds from Delabole was herself a delight. She had always wanted to be “a flower lady” and she brings that passion and enthusiasm to her flower arranging. Her use of natural foliage and a wide variety of flowers with different colours, shapes, sizes and textures gave us five wonderful displays with a Cornish theme. IT’S NEVER ‘JUST A SIMPLE WILL’ By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services We have been inundated by appointments for our special offer for wills, which confirms that far too many people haven’t got a will yet. However, it’s also been very interesting that many clients haven’t left with ‘just a simple will’. Those who did were advised that what they were doing was ‘dangerous’. There is only one situation I can think of when ‘just a simple will’ might be right – the testator doesn’t own a property and the estate is a very simple one. In all other cases, ‘just a simple will’ does not do the job. Some of the most common situations when ‘just a simple will’ is not sufficient include: n A will does not take your assets out of probate. A recent client

was surprised when I told her this. She thought that, by having a will, probate would be sorted. Unfortunately, if it’s probate you want to save your children from, a Home Protection Trust is the only way to go. n ‘I have been divorced for 30 years, my ex-spouse hasn’t remarried – surely an exclusion in my will is enough?’ Not at all. Under the Inheritance Act 1975 the ex-spouse would have a claim on the estate. An exclusion in the will with a letter of explanation can help, but will not do the job. A Home Protection Trust cannot be challenged under the Inheritance Act 1975. n ‘We have fallen out with one of our children and we do not want them to inherit a single penny’.

In this case, too, most people are convinced that their estranged child will not get anything by simply excluding them from their will(s) and explaining the reason why. A disgruntled child is likely to contest your will and no exclusion and explanation letter can potentially stop a judge from awarding that child a share of your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975. The answer is again a Home Protection Trust, which cannot be challenged under the Inheritance Act 1975. n ’I have a disabled child, receiving benefits, and I want to ensure they keep their benefits and are taken care of financially when I go’. Inheriting in these circumstances under ‘just a simple will’ will result in the child losing their benefits and run the risk that, should the child not be able to administer the inherited money, they could end up in a bad place financially. There are

two solutions: 1) Put your house in Trust and perhaps create a monthly income for them. Your assets will not fall in the disabled child’s estate and he/she will not be knocked out of benefits. 2) Create a disabled trust in your will to make sure that all the assets that are not distributed by your Home Protection Trust will be administered by the will’s trustees for the well-being of your disabled child and not cause a loss of the benefits entitlement. n ‘My ex-spouse, and/or disgruntled child(ren) will never contest my will’ Are you sure? n ‘I am too young/too old to set up a home protection trust’. You’re never too young – no-one knows what is around the corner. And you are never too old to ensure your children inherit from you. The answer is rarely, if ever, ‘just a simple will’.

This latest innovation from Westcountry Savings and Loans comes after the recent launch of online banking, enabling members to arrange payments 24/7. The new online services are in addition to telephone and drop-in face-to-face access. As a credit union, WS&L aims to eliminate high-cost credit from “payday” and “door-step” lenders by providing affordable loans, using funds deposited by other members who are saving. WS&L is part of a campaign by the England Illegal Money Lending Team to drive out loan sharks still operating and are also working on providing a budget account facility to help those moving onto Universal Credit. It is also the preferred financial partner of nine local housing associations, working to help improve the financial wellbeing of tenants in the associations’ 80,000 properties throughout the region. JOINT OWNERSHIP OF PROPERTY There are two ways that a property may be jointly owned. The terms used are ‘joint tenants’ and ‘tenants in common’ and they apply even if the property is freehold; they are not tenants in the normal sense. Property owned by joint tenants passes to the survivor(s) automatically if one of them dies, regardless who would otherwise be entitled according to a will or by virtue of the law of succession. Where there is a tenancy in common the shares of the owners are defined; they may be equal or in some other proportion. On the death of a tenant in common, their share passes according to the terms of their will or, if there is no will, according to the law of succession (intestacy). Note that spouses, former spouses, children and other

dependants may have a claim to reasonable provision out of an estate regardless of what a will or law of intestacy provide. Many married couples buy as joint tenants. The same applies to same sex partnerships which have been registered under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004. However, due to tax planning (if the value of the property is higher than the IHT threshold), the need to provide for children of a previous marriage, or some other reason (eg unequal contributions to the purchase price of the property and the wish to own the property in the proportions of your contributions) you might prefer to be tenants in common. By Jackie Thomas I’m sure you’ve heard horror stories of people with diabetes having their toes or feet amputated. It can and does happen all too frequently, but if you take your health seriously you can avoid the worst complications. If your feet tingle or feel numb, then this is a sign of nerve damage to your feet. It affects the small peripheral nerves first and works its way up your feet and legs. Keeping your blood sugars under control can prevent this type of damage. If you get cramp in your legs when you walk, especially uphill,

this is your body telling you that it’s not getting enough oxygen to the muscles because the arteries are narrowing and stiffening. This is another symptom of diabetes. I can assess the health of your foot circulation and sensation in my clinic. It should be done at least once a year so that any changes are spotted early. Eat healthily and avoid too many sugary foods, because it’s when blood sugar gets too high that it damages the nerves and arteries. Simple things like a small cut, graze or blister should be taken seriously, because you are more vulnerable to getting an ulcer or an infection. That is why it is advisable to get your nails cut and your feet checked regularly by a podiatrist. FUTURE BURNING BRIGHT FOR WOOD BURNING STOVES Many of you will already enjoy cosying up in front of a wood burning stove in the colder months, but recent negative press may be making some hesitate about buying a stove themselves. The imag has been talking to West Country Stoves in Aveton Gifford to find out what the case really is. “It’s true that wood burning stoves have been getting quite a lot of media attention and it can be confusing for consumers to know what lies ahead,’’ says Andrew Wotton, director of WCS. ‘’But in fact the changes within the industry are actually really positive and there will not be a ban on wood burning stoves.’’ Andrew goes on to explain that emissions from open fires burning wood and coal, wood burning stoves and bonfires have all contributed to poor air quality in urban areas, concedes Andrew. That is why the Stove Industry Alliance has been working to create a new set of standards (Eco Design Ready) which all manufacturers must conform to by 2022. The standards focus on efficiencies, lowering emissions and improving air quality from wood burning stoves. “Although the standards don’t come into force

until 2022, a high proportion of the manufacturers that we sell are already producing Eco Design Ready stoves, which means customers can choose a new appliance today that either meets or exceeds the SIA standards.’’ At this stage the new regulations only apply to new installations as of 2022, meaning there is no requirement for older stoves to be changed. As for open fires, there is less information about what the government will decide to do. While many love the crackle of an open fire it is well known that they can lose up to 80% of the heat up the chimney and emit a lot more pollutants. Therefore, for ‘open fire’ lovers this might be a good reason to consider changing to a wood burning stove. They are a safer, burn less wood, give a much greater heat output and smoke emissions from the chimney are greatly reduced. They also offer a sustainable form of heating that can reduce reliance on the use of fossil fuels as the primary heating source. A wood burning stove is better for your health, it’s better for the planet and a stove will be at the heart of your home in the chilly

sport SUCCESSFUL END TO CROSS COUNTRY SEASON n running Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers concluded the cross country season at a very windy Redruth. It was a great day for the club with several awards. Cleo Perry was third lady overall in the series and second female vet 45. Alison Engledew was first female vet 60, Ken Summers was first male vet 65 and Dave Engledew was third male vet 55. Linda McFadzen was second female vet 50. The club also took third Lady Veterans team and won the award of the Team of the Year for performances and assistance provided to all the events. On the ‘off-road’ scene, the Harriers turned out in force at the very tough ‘Grizzly’ which takes place in the Seaton, Beer and Branscombe area of east Devon and covers some 20 miles of hills, pebbled beaches and plenty of mud! This year, on a windy day, the Harriers had 18 athletes in the main race and three athletes in the shorter ‘cub run’. Ben Trigg was the first Harrier home in 15th place overall in a time of 2.36.17. Chris Prall (2.59.18) also managed to get

under three hours, while Emma Lake (3.03.13) and Russ Mogridge (3.08.59) also had great runs. All the Harriers managed to complete the course. Also ‘off-road’ at the Hameldown Hammer at Widecombe was Sarah Hirons, who was the first Harrier home in the half marathon, while in the seven miler Kate Medlicott was 27th and Pam Duncan 54th. On the road scene, Joe Battershill and Emily Oakshott ran in the Barcelona half marathon. Battershill had a tremendous debut at the distance, recording a time of 1.12.49. Oakshott had a very respectable time of 1.37.00. Nearer home, Emma Lake ran 1.32.53 at the Exeter half marathon and new member Steve Burrows ran a time of 1.22.56. Liz Cane recorded a time of 1.57.58. At the Bodmin half marathon, Dave Engledew was 34th in 1.42.35 and second male vet 55, while wife Alison was 93rd in 1.56.37 and second female vet 60. In the ‘Race the Train’ six miler near Totnes Hannah Walters was 41st in 1.00.59. At the very hilly Looe 10, Russ Mogridge was first male vet 55 in 1.14.23 and 30th overall. Wife

Katy was 206th in 1.35.13 Rose Bralsford 271st in 1.41.34. There were 517 finishers in this popular race. Nick Bristow had a good run in the Exeter 10K in Riverside Valley Park. He was ninth in 38.24. Entries for the Harriers’ popular Ivybridge 10K on Saturday 11th May, are accumulating quickly. Another 200 were received in the last month and over 600 entries have been received in total. The race limit of 825 is bound to be reached and anyone wishing to run is encouraged to enter as soon as possible. The evening race starts at 6.30pm at the station car park and finishes at the Rugby Club. Plymouth Argyle midfielder Jamie Ness (pictured) came into Yealmpton Primary School to talk to the children about what it takes to be a professional footballer. The ex-Rangers and Stoke City player, who has a child at the school, shared some of the memorable experiences he has had during his career and afterwards took questions from the children. The school looks forward to welcoming him back during the summer term during its Healthy Schools week.
