airways MEET THE STAFF

BY DANNY RICHMOND (GB-ADIR, GB-MAC) Hello All, my name is Danny Richmond and I’am the Assistant Director and Membership Assistant Coordinator within the GB & IE division here at the IVAO. A little bit about myself, I’m from Suffolk and live on Wattisham Airfield due to my job, I orignally come from Dumfries in Scotland but moved down to England. I work in the Army on the communications side of life within the Army Air Corps, working with the Apache Attack Helicopter. In my spare time I play the bagpipes (not really, still learning) and I fly gliders on the weekends, along with that I also fly paragliders when I can. At the time of writing this I was in the south of Germany paragliding (boring life :P). I currently have 2 jobs here at IVAO, firstly I’m the Membership Assistant Coordinator. Within this job I work with all new members that join the GB & IE Division, issue out awards to members that have gained them through tours and finally write and edit this magazine. Secondly, I’m the Assistant Director. I have just took on this role and I allready enjoy it, my role is directly under the director and helping with the daily work load that is required as a director. We work with all departments within the division making sure they are working efficeintly and giving the best expeiance to you the members. That is all from me, if you have any questions then send me an email: gb-adir@ivao.aero / gbmac@ivao.aero

airways DESTINATION GUIDE

BY DANNY RICHMOND (GB-ADIR/ GB-MAC) Leeds Bradford International Airport (EGNM) Leeds Airport is located in the west of Yorkshire and was opened in 1931 as Yeadon Aerodrome. It is both a passenger airport and a flight training airport. In 2012 it was listed the 16th busiest airport in the United Kingdom and bases numerous airlines such as: Jet2, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair. Thompson Airways is seasonally based at the airport. Leeds Bradford International Airport is the highest airport in the England with an elevation at 681ft (208m). The busiest destinations are mostly Spanish, these include: Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante being the top 3 destinations to and from Leeds. Leeds requires not practical examinations to control on IVAO. To control you require an “ATC Applicant” Rating” for Delivery, “ATC Trainee” for Tower, and “Advanced ATC Trainee” for Approach, but it is vital that you know the airport you are controlling at along with the procedures. Leeds features in one of the GB and IE Divisions events coming up this month where you can fly to numerous northern airports including Leeds (read more on page 6).

airways EVENTS UPDATE

BY ALEXANDER CLOVER (GB-EC) Dear members, Fifteen years ago, the IVAO United Kingdom division was created. Fifteen years later IVAO UK & Ireland are pleased to announce that we will be celebrating our 15th Birthday with a Gatwick Real Flight Event. Gatwick is the UK’s second largest international airport and second busiest by total passenger traffic in the United Kingdom, Gatwick also has the world's busiest single-use runway averaging 52 aircraft movements per hour. Gatwick will be fully staffed on the 1st November 2014, with some of the best controllers in the community. From 1200z-1800z, you as a pilot will be able to fly any of the hundreds of real flights available to book – flights which will be flown during those same 6 hours in real life! Whether you like long hauls or short domestic hops, there will be a flight for you. Over 10 active positions will be opened for the event, with many of them being controlled live from our Virtual Area Control Centre in Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom. Forum link: (To be posted this weekend to be available for 4th Oct)

Coming back to October, IVAO UK and Ireland are pleased to announce an event which involves the whole Northern part of England. On Tuesday 14th October from 18z until 20z, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Liverpool will be fully staffed for your delight. The aim of this event is to show how a number of different area sectors can coordinate and work together when they are being controlled simultaneously. At the moment, this doesn't occur in our skies on a day to day basis so it is set to be an interesting and possibly confusing time for pilots and controllers. To ensure everyone enjoys the event as much as possible, we have reduced the event time significantly to a 2 hour time frame. A number of Scottish area positions will be online along with major Northern airports, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle. Forum Link: (To be posted like RFE) Hope to see you there, Regards, IVAO UK Events Team
