airways MESSAGE FROM DIVISIONAL HEADQUARTERS BY DANNY RICHMOND (GB-ADIR)

Evening all, welcome to the December edition of Airways magazine. Last month we saw a number of successful events ran by the GB & IE division which shows how active we are. Firstly, we had the Gatwick RFE in Milton Keynes. This was a very successful event with a high attendance from both the controllers and pilots. Secondly, we have the Eindhoven Stansted airbridge. This was a very popular airbridge event which I toughly enjoyed. This month is the holiday month; we forecast that air traffic will start to increase as people begin the holiday period. As for training, I would suggest booking your practical training sessions quickly as trainers will become less likely to have a session during the season celebration period. Finally, events are looking to be big this month with the Crowded Skies and Operation Crowded Skies which will be explained more in the events section of the magazine.

airways GATWICK RFE – THE AFTERMARTH On a shockingly warm Halloween, members and staff started to descend to a city made of mainly straight roads and roundabouts. Milton Keynes was about to play host to our 15th birthday RFE based at London Gatwick airport (EGKK). After a night of intellectual discussion we got some sleep in preparation for the next day. By 1000, breakfast had been consumed and the venue was being set up ready to go live at 1200. We had 2 rooms, 1 room lived the aerodrome controllers which housed Gatwick director, ground, and tower. The next room was the area control room which had all the area controllers controlling the whole of the United Kingdom. The team of crack controllers then spent the next 6 hours guiding pilots in and out of the busiest single runway airport in the world. At 1800 the controllers were able to catch their breath, pack up and start to make arrangements the evening’s fun. Overall it was another successful event, it was great to meet some new faces and we look forward to doing it all again soon. We would like to thank all those who attended and all those whole flew in and out of Gatwick, making this an enjoyable and successful event.

“Over the 6 hours, Gatwick saw around 200 - 300 movements which contributed towards a very successful event. I personally would like to thank everyone attended, flew or helped prepare the event” ^GB-TC // GB-EC

airways DESTINATION GUIDE BY BEN LEONARD (GB-MC) Dublin (EIDW) Dublin is the main airport in Ireland; its 2 runways handled 20 million passengers in 2013. Dublin has 2 runways; however they can’t be used at the same time as they start at the same point. The shorter 16/34 is only used when the winds give a significant crosswind component on runway 10/28. Dublin has 2 terminals, the 2nd one being controversial as Ryanair wanted to see it become a low cost terminal. It is now home to Aer Lingus and most US and Middle Eastern carriers which serve the city. Dublin is also the only airport in the division which uses the point merge system for one of its runways. Instead of aircraft flying traditional holds, aircraft fly in arches before they can be routed to the initial approach fix. This is in operation for runway 28. On IVAO you must be an Advanced ATC Trainee to control on any position at Dublin apart from Approach which you must hold an Aerodrome Controller rating.

airways EVENTS UPDATE

BY ALEXANDER CLOVER (GB-EC) Last month saw the Eindhoven and Stansted airbridge which was proven to be very popular. With air traffic building up from the start the controllers found it very challenging but great fun. We would like to thank everyone who attended the event and we hope you had as much fun as we did. During December, IVAO will be again hosting the Crowded Skies event. Throughout this event we are looking to fill the skies with as many aircraft as possible, and control as much airports as we can. The event is on the 13th December 2014, and during this time we are looking to break our current standing record of 2,303 simultaneous connections. We are expecting to peak at around 1900z. Along with that, flight simulation company Aerosoft is donating €1 towards IVAO for each concurrent connection to the network during the times 1900z – 2000z. Finally, you will gain an award for joining us during this event. To qualify you must follow these simple rules:   

Be online at least 20 minutes before and after the event on IvAc or IvAp (peak hour is at 19:00 UTC) which means you have to be connected between 18:40 and 19:20 UTC For pilots two hours minimum of flying and for ATC one hour minimum of ATC Staff members online as staff cannot get the award

We hope to see you in the skies or controlling during the event of the 13th December.
