Riviera Nayarit

1. Islas Marietas is a National Park made up of two small islands – Isla Larga and Isla Redonda, where you’ll find the beautiful and remote Playa Escondida – plus two islets of volcanic origin. Its ecosystem is home to giant manta rays, sharks and whales. 2. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, the Agave landscape of Jalisco is the cradle of one of Mexico’s most traditional drinks: tequila. 3. The best way to immerse yourself in the local culture and art is to visit the markets in the area. Yelapa, Mascota, Compostela and San Francisco are completely unmissable. 4. Cooked in exclusive kitchens and palapas on the beach, pescado zarandeado, or grilled fish, is a popular pre-Hispanic recipe that still delights locals and visitors alike on the Riviera Nayarit. 5. The Pueblos Mágicos, or Magical Towns, are places that show off Mexican national identity in every corner. There are more than 130 throughout the country, and many are in Nayarit.

See & Do

BUCERÍAS Enjoy the full Mexican experience in this popular town on the coast of the Riviera Nayarit. The cobblestone streets, the brightly painted façades, and the tranquillity of its surroundings create a unique warmth. Bucerías, which means “place of divers”, is a cheerful village with friendly people and picturesque alleys. The distinguishing features are its main square and church, where local people welcome tourists with food stalls and a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Among the great gastronomic options, the fresh fish and seafood stand out – this is the ideal place to try a delicious ceviche toast or a tasty shrimp cocktail. Both in the main square and the surrounding streets, countless craft shops sell exclusive souvenirs such as striking Huichol artworks. The beaches here are the longest in Banderas Bay and certified as the cleanest and safest on the Mexican coast, with fine sand and calm waters. Here you can enjoy a beautiful sunset resting under the palapas like never before. As well as an ideal place to relax, the beaches are also perfect for practicing all

6

types of water activity, from sailing, to kayaking and jet-skiing. With so many attractions, it’s no surprise many visitors decide to establish second homes in this charming village. SAYULITA Just 25 minutes from the hotel, this Magical Town is one of the trendiest destinations in the entire Riviera Nayarit and a sensory explosion in every way, from the contrast between the colorful Mexican street decorations and the imposing green of the surrounding jungle, to the fusion of the authentic flavors of Mexican cuisine and avant-garde gastronomy, to the constant mix of street music and the powerful sound of sea hitting land. It’s precisely the waves crashing against the coast that makes Sayulita the perfect break for surf lovers. The boho-chic destination is a mecca for surfers

and adventurers, full of domestic and international tourists looking for waves by day and fun by night. Amble round the cobblestone streets of Sayulita and you’ll find shops, art galleries, and exhibitions featuring traditional crafts (Huichol art, jewelry, wool and silk garments, wicker objects), paintings, sculptures, photography, and endless peculiar objects. Next to the galleries, you’ll also find places to eat (or a combination of the two, with art displays on the walls of cafés and restaurants), offering everything from a good pot of coffee to artisan ice cream, traditional local seafood aguachile, and tasty pasta cooked by an Italian who one day visited Sayulita and decided to stay and set up a restaurant. If, as they say, the way to the heart is through the stomach, you’re sure to leave this Magical Town in love. Do not hesitate to visit this unique, bohemian, and special place.

SAN FRANCISCO (SAN PANCHO) If Sayulita is an international mecca for surfers and bohemian life, San Francisco is a cultural and natural jewel for locals and those who live and move in the world of surfing. Located about 40 minutes from the hotel, north of Sayulita, San Francisco – or San Pancho as regulars call it – marks the point where the Sierra Madre Occidental meets the Pacific Ocean. Here you find a picturesque mix of jungle, hills, and wide beaches with different types of swell, from calm seas to big waves. The town is also one of the most important cultural centers in Nayarit state, with a strong Huichol community presence, acrylic murals on the walls, and even a contemporary art gallery. With local and fusion cuisine, art, indigenous culture, sport, and adventures in nature, not to mention one of the best sunsets in the entire Riviera Nayarit, San Francisco doesn’t disappoint anyone. P

escado zarandeado is fish cooked on a mangrove-wood grill, known as a zaranda, from which the dish takes its name. It is a pre-Hispanic recipe originating from the north of Riviera Nayarit, and has become the most popular way of preparing fish in the area. From there, it has spread to neighboring states such as Sonora, Sinaloa, and Jalisco. In general, the fish is snapper, although red snapper and sea bass are also often used. The fish is served whole, cut in half, and seasoned with lemon juice, salt, pepper, and soy sauce, and accompanied by hot sauce and corn tortillas, cucumber, tomato slices, red onions, and beans. As with any traditional dish, every family claims to have the original recipe. These days, the technique is not only used to cook fish but other produce as well, such as shellfish.

WHALE WATCHING One of the most memorable experiences you can have in Vallarta is whale watching. The activity is one of the wide range of experiences that this destination offers, allowing you to merge with nature and discover a whole new undersea world and the variety of species that inhabit it. Humpback whales are one of the largest underwater creatures, reaching up to 16 meters (52 feet) long and 40 tonnes in weight, and you have the opportunity to observe them along the coast of Vallarta and in Banderas Bay. The cetaceans come to these shores to give birth to their young, since the waters are ideal for that purpose, giving you the chance to witness this exciting phenomenon of nature. The whales are known for the imposing jumps they make out of the water and for the magical chants the males sing underwater, which are thought to play a part in attracting females. The whale-watching season extends from December to March, but with a bit of luck you can see the first ones from November and the stragglers until May if the temperature of the sea over the season is suitable.

MONKEY MOUNTAIN HIKE The Riviera Nayarit not only has splendid beaches, but also interesting options for mountain lovers. The area around Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay is a mountainous region dominated by lush palms and other trees through which torrents and streams feeding rivers often flow, creating amazing natural landscapes. If one hill stands above the rest, it is without a doubt the Cerro del Mono. This peak 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level is one of the most attractive points in the area, located next to Higuera Blanca, a town situated just 20 minutes from Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa. The route to the summit has acquired great popularity as a hiking trail among both locals and visitors as it gives you the chance to appreciate the beauty of the Pacific in all its splendor. While climbing up can be a bit demanding, the reward is totally worth it. From the top, you can enjoy a unique 360º view over the entire bay that will leave you in love with this beautiful place. The tour starts from Higuera Blanca next to a stream that runs through the ranches in the area. You gradually enter a lush jungle featuring fig trees and coconut palms, among other species – the perfect lair for the many birds that will accompany you on your journey. Just before you reach the long-awaited summit, you will have to climb over a few rocks but don’t worry – they don’t pose any kind of

challenge and you’ll easily be able to get up on the hill and enjoy the show. There are several legends explaining the origin of the hill’s name. According to the locals, it comes from totems representing primates found in the area that are thought to have belonged to the people who lived here many years ago. Another version states that monkeys previously inhabited the area. However, none of these stories has been documented nor made official.

GRAND PALLADIUM VALLARTA RESORT & SPA This five-star hotel is located in the picturesque Banderas Bay and has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, in addition to being close to internationally renowned golf courses and being just a short walk from the beach. The hotel also has top-class facilities and services for adults and children, which are included in the Family Selection service. Shop

The shopping options in Puerto Vallarta are as varied as the gastronomy and beaches, with stores for all tastes. The city is full of shopping plazas, markets, tianguis, boutiques, jewelry stores and art galleries. The latter set Puerto Vallarta apart from other similar beach destinations: only here can you go out to buy a souvenir and come back home the proud owner of a work of art by a recognized artist. You can shop at virtually all hours, every day of the week, although some businesses close at noon. The shopping spaces and most of the stores in the centre are open from 11am to 9pm. DOWNTOWN Puerto Vallarta’s importance as a tourism destination means it brings together handicrafts from all states of the republic. In the Río Cuale Municipal Market you will find two floors full of pottery, blown glass, woodworking, onyx and obsidian pieces, varied textiles, spirits, t-shirts and other souvenirs. It’s the ideal place to pick up vacation memories. Huichol (or Wixárika) art, the most representative Vallartense tradition,

14

deserves a separate mention. Visiting stores and viewing the painstakingly created, splendid, and symbolismladen multicolored figures and masks made with tiny beads of glass or plastic (chaquira) or with yarn and wool is a gift for the senses and an experience in itself that doesn’t cost a penny. The center of Puerto Vallarta has many shops specializing in Huichol art, which as well as offering unique works, help the development of this indigenous community. ROMANTIC ZONE Formerly known as Viejo Vallarta, this area hosts the Old Town Market, a cultural tianguis of totally local and handmade products – fruits, vegetables, bread, chocolates, cheeses, soaps… – held on Saturdays (November to May, 9.30am–2pm). You’ll find many stores selling a selection of handicrafts from all over the country. The area’s narrow streets full of cafés, bars and restaurants are also home to stores specializing in decorative items. If you want a piece of furniture or work of art, stop by and visit its shops and galleries. A walk along the boardwalk is like visiting an exhibition, with everything from paintings and cartoons to ornaments, jewelry and wallets made from recycled material. Stroll down to the seashore and sharpen your eyes, and you can find a really special gift. HOTEL ZONE This area is where you’ll find all of the shopping malls except Plaza Marina (see below). The extensive Galerías mall is home to branches of many

international store and restaurant chains, alongside other shops and boutiques, a movie theater, a fastfood zone and a children’s area. From the second floor, you can enjoy a view of the port and cruise ships. Nearby Península Plaza has restaurants, decoration and furniture stores and some offices. And if you can’t find what you are looking for in either of those, you can also try Plaza Caracol, Las Islas, Plaza Genovesa and Macroplaza (which also has a movie theater), all in the same area. MARINA VALLARTA Marina Vallarta is a modern area with elegant hotels and resorts and sandy beaches. It has a public golf course and a large marina where luxury yachts dock. Here you can find boutiques and stores selling cotton, linen, and chiffon clothing, and others selling varied handicrafts, as well as excellent restaurants. And although prices here are a little higher here than in other areas, the quality of the objects justifies it. The area also hosts the Plaza Marina shopping mall, which features a supermarket, commercial premises, offices, cafés and restaurants. Palladium guides

his fantastic volcanic archipelago in front of Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, on the Nayarit coast, comprises two main islands: Isla Larga and Isla Redonda. One of its biggest attractions, unique in the world, is Playa del Amor, also known as Playa Escondida, due to its peculiar shape, which resembles a volcano crater. It’s a mandatory stop for any beach lover who wants an unforgettable experience and a beautiful memory of a place you will find nowhere else. The Islas Marietas have amazing paradisiacal beaches – including incredible La Nopalera – where you can relax and enjoy your time on sandy shores and in crystal-clear turquoise waters that have

a glow reminiscent of the Caribbean. The islands also feature natural caves and caverns where you can delight in the sight of the waves impacting their majestic walls. To complete your encounter with nature, take a dive under the sea to observe the islands’ immense variety of marine fauna, from small multicolored fish swimming coral reefs to the huge humpback whales that make the Islas Marietas their home between December and March. And that’s not to forget the cheerful dolphins that often accompany you on your way to the islands or the huge turtles swimming peacefully in the sea. Then there’s the huge variety of native birds that inhabit this beautiful place and escort you on your island adventure.

See & Do

YELAPA Surrounded by unspoilt jungle and divided by a river, Yelapa is a place totally isolated from civilization where you can relax like nowhere else. This hidden beach was a favorite of American hippies who after escaping the police took refuge in places where they could sharpen their senses and commune with nature. Celebrities who visited here included Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Today, a few families live in the area, who live mostly from fishing and tourism. Hundreds of people visit this bohemian beach every day, attracted by its tranquillity and wonderful landscape. On its shore is a row of restaurants that, along with seafood and beer, also sell raicilla, a local tequila-like liquor fermented from the roots of the maguey plant whose hallucinogenic effects have given Yelapa fame. The quiet beach, with golden sand and turquoise water, is ideal for snorkeling or lying on a sunbed and enjoying the unique views of the sea and the tranquillity without a worry in the world. To escape the beach for a while, tour Yelapa town,

18

which is full of art walls painted in vivid colors. Follow the steep and narrow stone alleyways, guided by the signs, and you reach the waterfall of Yelapa. The imposing drop is 45 meters (148 feet) high, surrounded by tropical vegetation, and you can bathe in the pool at the bottom. You can tour the town on foot, horseback or quad bike, but whichever way you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the magical atmosphere of Yelapa. The best way to get to Yelapa beach is by sea. Boats leave every day from the boardwalk in Playa de los Muertos, La Marina or Boca de Tomatlán. The journey takes about an hour and gives you the chance to marvel at the glorious landscape, divided between the sea and the tight vegetation of the hills. You can also reach the beach by mountain bike or by climbing from El Tuito, but that is only recommended for experienced athletes. BOCA DE TOMATLÁN This picturesque traditional fishing village is a must-see for all visitors to Puerto Vallarta. The small town straddles the Horcones river, which flows from the Sierra Madre mountains through the lush semitropical jungles of Jalisco. Here the people are friendly and polite, and the children play on the street and on the beach alongside abundant nature. Birds such as parrots, herons, hummingbirds and seabirds fill the air accompanied by the sounds of donkeys, roosters, dogs, cats and traditional rancheras. You’ll find humble but excellent traditional restaurants by the beach and in the

surrounding area. While the area has several quiet beaches suitable for bathing, the widespread increase of panga boats means visitors prefer to head to the beaches further south, such as Playa Las Ánimas, Playa Colomitos, Playa Quimixto, Playa Majahuitas, Yelapa, and others further away. There is also a hiking trail running from Boca to Quimixto along a path through the jungle that mostly borders the sea, though this is only recommended for real adventurers who don’t mind sweating to get to the beach. COLOMITOS Get to know the smallest and most charming beach in Mexico. Though only 30 meters (100 feet) long, its beauty, tranquillity and landscape make it worthy of inclusion in this list of destinations. Colomitos is an intimate beach surrounded by rocks and vegetation where you can relax and spend a great morning or afternoon away from the bustle of the city. The water is bright and crystal clear, which makes it an idyllic destination for snorkelers, who can observe the likes of royal angelfish, damselfish, and puffer fish. If you visit, also look for the secret waterfall. Few people know about it, which makes Colomitos one of Puerto Vallarta’s best beaches for explorers and photographers. It’s easy to detect the small current flowing from the mountains through the beach and into the sea, and then follow the stream a few minutes inland to the falls. The fresh, peaceful water, surrounded by thick jungle

vegetation makes you feel like you’re a million light-years from the rest of the world. To reach Colomitos, take a panga boat from the port in Boca de Tomatlán (the fastest option), or follow the path that goes up the gorge and among the trees. Along the route you can see animals such as foxes, raccoons and iguanas and birds such as the Mexican cacique. LO DE MARCOS For those who know the Riviera Nayarit, Lo de Marcos is the number-one choice for peace and relaxation. Here the beaches share the same landscapes and nature as those of Sayulita or San Pancho, but with far fewer people, making them ideal for disconnecting and recharging your batteries. On their long and wide shores, palm trees, golden sands and calm waves combine, creating the perfect paradisiacal image. With quiet streets full of bright colors and small restaurants, Lo de Marcos is the perfect place to relax and reconnect with yourself. Palladium guides

S

everal of the most beautiful Magical Towns in Mexico are located in inland Jalisco. The list, according to the Mexican Tourism Ministry, includes areas that “have symbolic attributes, legends, history, major events, daily life… in short, magic that emanates from every one of its social-cultural manifestations.” Above all – and this is us talking now – they have an incomparable beauty and authentic flavor.

See & Do

TEQUILA No matter where in the world you live, if you think of one thing when you think of Mexico, it’s tequila. A few hours from Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, you reach an agave landscape that extends for kilometers, and serves as the introduction to one of the most important production areas for this liquor. The peace and quiet in the Magical Town of Tequila invites you to walk around and get lost among its cobblestone streets that lead everywhere and nowhere. Here you will discover the history of magic and mysticism that lies behind this national drink. The huge haciendas that house several of the most important distilleries, the agave fields, the picturesque buildings, and a cuisine like no other are just some of the attractions. Needless to say, a tour of a distillery is a must for any visitor to this amazing place, with some sheltering more than 200 years of history. SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE One of the most recommended excursions for our guests, San Sebastián del Oeste is another Magical Town less than two hours from the resort, in the Sierra Madre

24

Occidental. It’s a place where time has stopped in another era: accessing it via a cobblestone road, you encounter horses, asphalt-free streets and a church and kiosk that seem unalterable. All of which makes you doubt you are still in the 21st century – and makes you fall in love with the place. San Sebastián del Oeste is in complete contrast to Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit, with a mountain climate that invites you to dress in long sleeves in the morning and mountain architecture where, rather than being of every shape and color, buildings are all white with terracotta roofs. At the kiosk in front of the church, the heart of San Sebastián, you can choose where to try the traditional gastronomy (including the local raicilla and sweets), discover unique works made by goldsmiths and jewelers and, for the more adventurous, look up to La Bufa mountain and decide if to climb it on foot or on quad bike. TALPA DE ALLENDE AND MASCOTA A pilgrimage destination for those moved by faith. A place of culture for those who enjoy its narrow,

cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses with shingle roofs. A haven of peace for seekers of mountain adventures, trails, forest, nature and a refreshing climate (the average temperature is 21ºC). A place to satisfy lovers of traditional local food with birria, tamales and desserts based on guava, capulín and nance. No matter what takes you to Talpa de Allende, the important thing is the experience you will have there. About three hours from Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, Talpa makes a great day trip. A Magical Town dating from pre-Hispanic times, it boasts one of the region’s best-preserved historic quarters, not to mention the imposing basilica of the Virgin of Talpa, an architectural gem. The town welcomes a significant number of travelers from all over the country, especially during festivities such as Easter (the pilgrimage route from Ameca to Talpa is followed by more than three million people every year) and the Guava Fair. But that’s not the only reason to visit. The road from the hotel to Talpa affords spectacular views of the mountains, while halfway along lies another Magical Town of

important renown, Mascota. Here you’ll find the Mascota Archeological Museum, which contains pieces dating back more than 3,000 years, a picturesque kiosk in front of the church in the heart of the city, and the spectacular, but unfinished, Temple of the Precious Blood. SANTA MARÍA DEL ORO Just two hours from Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa, in the crater of a volcano in the Sierra Madre Occidental, lies the beautiful lagoon of the municipality of Santa María del Oro (also known as Samao by the locals). The lagoon’s waters captivate visitors with their colors that change with the seasons. The spot recently became the first freshwater lagoon in Mexico to receive a Blue Flag, an international certification that recognizes beaches, marinas and lagoons that have achieved excellence in water quality, environmental management, and education, as well as safety and services. Stop to appreciate the lagoon in all its splendor from the overlooking viewpoint. A few miles on, you’ll be able to explore the shores and restaurants

of this beautiful natural paradise. Don’t forget to try the traditional pescado zarandeado of Nayarit state and enjoy water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding or a boat ride. COMPOSTELA In January 1532 Compostela was declared the capital of the new Spanish kingdom of Nueva Galicia, and remained so until 1560. Named after the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela by order of Queen Joanna of Castile, this Magical Town has endless attractive places to visit, but don’t miss the parish of Santo Santiago Apóstol, the Compostela Museum, the former hacienda of the Countess of Miravalles, the El Molino and Santana pools, and the railway station. The museum houses a large collection of archeological and historical artefacts relating to the city, including ceramic, lithic, shell and metallurgic remains that tell the story of pre-Hispanic Nayarit, as well as graphs, maps, photographs, weapons and paper currency that help explain the importance of the region for the kingdom of Nueva Galicia. L

os Guachimontones is the jewel in the archeological crown of western Mexico. The site is known for its curious conical-stepped pyramids, built by the Teuchitlán culture. These include the largest round pyramid in the world – more than 16 meters (60 feet) high with 52 steps. The site also contains two ball courts that were used to play Mesoamerican ball games. Competitors had to move their hips to control the ball and hit it from one end of the court to the other. You definitely shouldn’t miss this pre-Hispanic gem.

hideaway Playa Nahui Riviera Nayarit

The

Located in the heart of the Riviera de Nayarit, about seven kilometers (four miles) southwest of the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, and some 29 kilometers (18 miles) northwest of the airport, this beach is hidden from view and only locals know its location. It is next to the federal highway that crosses the Riviera Nayarit, but the best plan is to ask a local to point you in the right direction. Away from the hustle and bustle, it is an ideal spot to enjoy a picnic by the sea of local products purchased from the Cruz de Guanacaxtle market, which opens on Sundays. But be careful, because you need to take everything you need: this really is a virgin beach without any nearby services. An insider tip? Playa Nahui seems small, but if you find the small cliff that protects it and enter there, you will find another kilometer of sand that is even calmer and cleaner, if that’s possible.
