EDITOR'S NOTE

What Will They Think of Next? Over the years, the countertop industry has witnessed significant challenges and advancements driven by evolving consumer demand, technological innovations and environmental concerns. As we navigate past certain hurdles and face a fresh array of obstacles in the industry, we cannot rest on our laurels. In fact, this constant change in the market fuels our drive. Adversity propels us to innovate, encouraging us to break free from the constraints of our current circumstances and envision the next remarkable breakthrough. 2023 is no exception. We pore over hundreds of submissions on tools, materials and other innovative solutions for the decorative surfacing industry throughout the year. We are continually impressed by the developments in products and processes that support fabricators and their teams, and it’s incredible to watch new trends and opportunities unfold before us. In every corner of the industry, manufacturers and suppliers aim to improve how we do business, and that’s inspiring. One of the most pressing challenges in the countertop industry is silica safety. There’s pressure on material manufacturers to find sustainable alternatives to traditional materials like quartz. Claiming a significant win is Lapitec, which is helping fabricators breathe a little easier by developing slabs that contain zero crystalline silica. Along the same lines, Caesarstone just launched the Time Collection, part of what they’re calling Caesarstone Mineral. The unique blend of natural minerals and recycled materials offers the same superior durability, performance and aesthetic as quartz, while reducing crystalline silica content from 90% to less than 40% and, in some cases, even less than 10%. As silica continues to challenge the health and safety of our fabricators, it’s clear that the manufacturers are paying attention and finding solutions that mitigate risk. In 2023, we continued to see a wave of porcelain hit the market. Another Mineral Surface material, porcelain continues to climb in popularity; it’s a high-demand surface that leaves a lasting impression on fabricators and consumers alike. Almost every major manufacturer has developed a line of porcelain to chase this trend. From LX Hausys’ TERACANTO Porcelain to Cosentino to Daltile and Corian Endura, porcelain is shaping up to be a high-performance material well-suited for indoor and outdoor spaces. Manufacturers are developing and promoting sustainable materials as sustainability continues to ring throughout mission statements and company values across the whole industry. Recycled glass, bamboo and recycled wood are just a few examples of eco-friendly options that have gained popularity in recent years. But beyond that, there are all kinds of companies trying to make a difference however they can. Whether it’s low VOC adhesives, closed-loop water recycling operations from Beckart Environmental and Water Treatment Solutions, or digital templating software from Laser Products Industries, a solution that cuts down on template material usage and even carbon emissions by minimizing the need for heavy transport of physical templates — all of these are steps toward a cleaner environment. Consumers continue to focus on creating healthy environments in homes and public spaces. Solid surface continues to answer the call; this material is stain-resistant and easy to maintain with nonporous properties that won’t support bacterial growth. Aristech, Hanex, HIMACS, LivingStone, Staron and Wilsonart are just some examples of brands that continue to champion this material. It’s a no-brainer for certain applications, and it cross-references sustainability as a material that is easy to repair and reuse. Our annual Buyers’ Guide is meant to help fabricators find manufacturers and suppliers of the latest and greatest products to help them better serve their customers. ISFA and Countertops & Architectural Surfaces magazine are committed to keeping industry professionals up to speed on cutting-edge advancements, design trends and business strategies to help our members and readers make educated decisions and — above all — continue to succeed. Staying ahead of the game is paramount, so it’s best to keep asking yourself, “What will they think of next?” Sarah Peiper, Editor Sarah@ISFAnow.org 6 Buyers’ Guide 2023-24 • International Surface Fabricators Association

MINERAL SURFACES

PRODUCT SHOWCASE

Mineral Surfaces are clay-based and contain various minerals such as kaolin. The manufacturing processes for Mineral Surfaces can vary, but all typically involve compaction and formation of a solid mass of material by applying heat and pressure, which results in durable material. You might know them better as porcelain, sintered stone or ultra-compact surfaces. This rising category is in high demand!

Caesarstone’s Porcelain Collection

Caesarstone’s Porcelain products mark a leap in technology, functionality and design by introducing three innovative properties that deliver a high degree of durability, strength, and style. Caesarstone’s Porcelain unleashes the full potential of porcelain, making it a high-performance material particularly suited for present-day lifestyle — indoors and outdoors: • Fortified Frame — incredibly hard material. • High Heat — extremely resistant to high temperatures. • Forward Design — striking color schemes, bolder veins, textures, and patterns. For over 35 years, Caesarstone has been turning design dreams into a reality. Now, with the addition of porcelain and natural stone in their portfolio, consumers can find their dream surface no matter the material. Crossville’s Sahara Noir Porcelain Panels Crossville Inc.’s newest introduction is the Sahara Noir porcelain tile panel. Inspired by Tunisian Black Marble, found on the cusp of the Sahara itself, these unique panels are crafted to replicate the characteristic rich black of the base and the distinctively striking bright orange and white veining of the appearance. The line is made in Italy by Laminam and stocked in the United States. The Sahara Noir porcelain tile panels are an impressive 1200 mm by 3000 mm (47 ¼ inches by 118 7/64 inches) size format that’s wider than traditional porcelain panels and available in the 5.6 mm thickness suitable for interior and exterior walls, counters, furniture and flooring in dry interior spaces. Caesarstone’s Time Collection

Caesarstone introduced its new Time Collection, a new generation of surfaces created with advanced sustainable manufacturing and materials. The unique blend of natural minerals and recycled materials offers the same superior durability, performance and aesthetic as quartz while also reducing crystalline silica content from 90% to less than 40% and in some cases, even less than 10%. This reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and partnership with consumers and business partners. The Time Collection offers contemporary designs that represent the ancient beauty of how time imprints on stone: • Solenna: A rich milky complexion evokes warmth, interlaced with prominent veining that crisscrosses the design; a mix of light soil and putty gray lines, with occasional amber veins bringing additional authentic depth. • Dreamy Carrara: A silky white base is given texture by the subtlest whispers of off-white and light gray. This is scattered with fine sedimentary veins in earthy grays with bluish undertones, some dissolving into the cloudy depths of the material. • Brillianza (pictured): A dynamic sequence of frosty white veins overlay the intriguing surface, dissolving into a cool gray base. Its lustrous appearance is highlighted by glamorous encounters of light and shadows between its semitransparent layers, occasionally infused with powder-peach mineral accents to warm up this transcendent design. Sink Shaping Bits from RouterBitsNow

RouterBitsNow.com’s mission statement is simple: to make the fabricator’s job easier. They offer three different bit drafts for sink finish shaping. For best results, select the correct bit angle, or draft, for whichever sink you are choosing to finish route. Most sinks can be finish routed with the 10-degree or 15-degree bits. There are a few sinks where the 20-degree bit will work best. Determine this by taking the draft of the sink and adding 5 degrees. For example, if a sink is 5 degrees, then the 10-degree bit will work best. If a sink is 13 degrees, then the next best bit would be a 20-degree bit. If you had only a 15-degree bit, then the reduced bearing (.975 inch) would be a trick in a pinch. All bits come standard with a Delrin soft angle matched .995-inch bearing and will save time and money! Visit www.routerbitsnow.com for a full list of products and additional information.

V-Grooving Router from Betterley Industries

The Betterley V-Grooving Router is the only hand-held router designed to miter fold half-inch-thick solid surface material. Miter folding solid surface material saves time by creating built-up edges, dropped aprons, backsplashes and more, in a single pass operation. The tool cuts a precise “V” groove (or miter) in the material, adhesive is applied in the groove, and the material is then folded. The resulting joint is virtually invisible with no adhesive squeeze-out on the exposed surface, providing a finished square edge as is, or ready for profiling without the additional edge routing and sanding normally required for built-up edges. With the ability to quickly adjust the fence from 1 to 6 inches from the edge of the sheet, the tool easily accommodates most any application for drop edges, aprons and backsplashes. Capturing CNC Efficiency in a Data-Driven World By Klint Olsen, GranQuartz

The consistent question that fabricators seek to answer is, “How do we improve efficiency?” More efficiency leads to more time, more capacity and reduced costs – all levers that impact the bottom line and the ability to reinvest in other solutions to start the pursuit of efficiency yet again. The GranQuartz CNC program’s foundation is built on growing knowledge, optimizing tool and machine performance, and — of course — maximizing efficiency. Our CNC technicians have seen shops of all shapes and sizes, with their own unique physical and operational circumstances. One truth remains the same for all 36 Buyers’ Guide 2023-24 • International Surface Fabricators Association

fabricators: The more high-quality production data that they have access to, the higher production rates and efficiency gains these shops realize. In an age of access to almost immeasurable amounts of data, many businesses still struggle with finding solutions that not only capture data but make it straightforward and actionable. The ZOLLER Tool Management System (TMS) technology manages to do just that. The TMS interfaces directly with the ZOLLER >>smile<< Pre-Setting Machine to catalog tooling, monitor usage and optimize tool service intervals — all powered by your production data.

About the ZOLLER Presetting Machine

The ZOLLER >>smile<< 420 Presetting Machine measures and sets CNC profile tools with the precision and speed that is signature to the ZOLLER brand. Correctly measured tooling saves shops time, reduces tooling costs, and increases process reliability.

About TMS TMS is a tool management system solutions software that harnesses the power of the ZOLLER machine to provide users with rich production data to track tool consumption and location. The system can also use this intelligence to notify users when it is time for tool maintenance. The insights from TMS help fabricators improve forecasting, estimate new tooling needs and much more.

Why TMS & ZOLLER? This two-part solution was designed with efficiency in mind, and two of the biggest threats to shop efficiency are downtime and rework. Manually measuring and hand-setting CNC tools accurately requires precision, time and training. Unfortunately, most operators typically lack the tools and training to do so efficiently. This leads to periods of inactivity, premature tool wear, and job adjustments or rework. The ZOLLER machine removes the need for complicated hand-setting and skilled labor while delivering the accuracy required to reduce post-production labor costs. The TMS solution creates even more efficiency gains by providing the visibility that fabrication shops need to plan and optimize their tooling — further decreasing instances of downtime when tools must be located or ordered. Combined, these two technologies equip you with the information you need to plan and profit.

An additional benefit of integrating this system into your shop is the unmatched service and support that you’ll receive from the GranQuartz CNC Technical Team. A member of the team will come to your facility to train and assist with the setup process to ensure you can quickly begin extracting the most value from your investment. Our consultative CNC technicians have real-world experience and situational knowledge to help problem solve and guide the development of best practices for your shop’s unique operations.

The TMS + ZOLLER Misconception A common misconception is that only automated shops of a certain size or equipment mix can benefit from a ZOLLER machine or the TMS solution. We’ve heard feedback that a presetter or tool management system makes sense only for shops with multiple routers, but the truth is that operational efficiency is necessary for all levels of automated fabricators — especially if inefficiencies are halting production for the only machine in the shop. Machine running hours equal revenue, so the goal for any automated shop should be to equip itself with solutions that will improve operational efficiency and keep production moving.

Mineral Surfaces Fabrication Training from the International Surface Fabricators Association (ISFA)

Mineral Surfaces are clay-based and contain various minerals such as kaolin. The manufacturing processes for Mineral Surfaces can vary, but all typically involve compaction and formation of a solid mass of material by applying heat and pressure, which results in durable manufactured surface material. You might know them better as porcelain, sintered stone or ultra-compact surfaces. ISFA’s Mineral Surfaces Training course is designed to arm fabricators with the knowledge and skills they need to embrace these materials to meet growing customer demand. According to the Freedonia Group, porcelain is rapidly rising in status as consumers seek alternatives to quartz and granite. It is expected to be the fastest-growing countertop material in the United States through 2026. Learn about material specifics, handling, shop layout, tooling, fabrication, installation, repair and more. If you’re interested in Mineral Surfaces Training, contact ISFA at Trainer@ISFAnow.org.

ISFA holds regular training sessions throughout the year, and there is an on-demand option — ISFA trainers come to your shop to help fine-tune your processes and get your staff up to speed.
