How many bulbs does it take to change your mind?

Until Christie’s Entero™ LED powered displays, every video wall used lamps. And we do mean used. For over its life a wall could consume hundreds – an expense that could outstrip the initial cost. And then of course there was the downtime, the consumables, the maintenance charges. But where conventional lamps might last 10,000 hours, our LED light source lasts 60,000. That’s almost seven years running twenty-four hours a day. It could outlive the wall itself. So, with Christie Entero™ LED powered rear screen displays, when you buy a video wall, you buy a video wall. Not a lifetime’s commitment to never-ending expense. Isn’t it time you changed technology – not lamps?

It’s time to RISE… Welcome to the first edition of RISE, the official preview magazine of Integrated Systems Europe 2010. From 2-4 February 2010, the Amsterdam RAI will once again host a record-breaking tradeshow for Europe’s professional AV and electronic systems integration industry. We expect more exhibiting companies, more attendees, more education sessions and more net-working opportunities than ever before, and with so much activity now taking place to vie for visitors’ attention, we felt the need to broaden the scope of our traditional Visitor Brochure into the magazine you hold in your hands now.

EDITORIAL

Why an official magazine…? As the pace of innovation in the AV business continues to hot up, the number of companies making major product announcements at ISE just grows and grows. Publishing RISE enables us to throw the spotlight on some of these new products, all of which are new to Europe, some previously unseen anywhere in the world. Of course, in a magazine such as this, we can never hope to cover every new product launch that will be on offer in Amsterdam. For one thing, space is limited. And for another, some exhibitors prefer to keep their latest developments under wraps until the show itself. But we hope we have been able to assemble a package of product news that whets your appetite, and gives you a flavour of the event to come.

Why RISE…? Since its launch in 2004, Integrated Systems Europe has soared in importance, in parallel with our continent’s AV industry. Our event has helped to drive growth by providing a platform for the forging of new business partnerships, as well as giving our exhibitors an unrivalled market to which they can promote their solutions. ISE 2009 broke all records just as the economic storm clouds were gathering, and I believe that ISE 2010 will have a similarly positive effect on the AV business climate in Europe. Our industry is creative, hard-working and, through the ingenuity of its engineers and designers, able to embrace new opportunities presented by technology and market trends alike. As the economic climate warms up again, we are poised to ‘RISE’ to the occasion.

Why ISE 2010…? There has always been far more to Integrated Systems Europe than a tradeshow, and this year is no exception. On the following pages you’ll find full programme details of our second DOOH Business Conference – which, as last year, begins on the day before ISE itself. There’s also a day-by-day guide to education sessions, an outline of some of the show floor’s special features, and a few points worth noting about Amsterdam, a city that has proved itself to be such an agreeable host for our industry. I hope you enjoy flicking through this inaugural issue of RISE, and look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam in February.

Digital signage at ISE 2010 With more than half of ISE’s 500-plus exhibitors showing products with digital signage applications, the event will again be comfortably Europe’s largest DS tradeshow. In 2010, there will be even more ways for attendees to experience the latest signage solutions…

Launched in 2009 to huge industry and media acclaim, ISE’s Digital Signage Hall returns to Hall 12 for 2010 with another breathtaking line-up of new signage solutions. Located within the Amsterdam RAI’s striking new Elicium building, this Hall acts as a showcase for innovations in display, signal management, content distribution and control, in a relaxed and well-lit environment perfectly suited to the application. In an exciting new development, delegates to the second DOOH Business Conference (see below) will be invited to a ‘sneak peek’ preview of this Hall on the evening of Monday, 1 February. This preview will be part of a VIP Reception available exclusively to Conference delegates, and will offer them the chance not just to view some of the latest signage technology, but to network with vendors and their distributors. In response to popular demand, for 2010 a second Digital Signage Area has been created in Hall 10 of the RAI. Among the special features here are the ISE Digital Signage Showcase, where attendees can see a range of content distribution and display products working together; a demonstration of the ‘RAI Live!’ digital signage network being worked on in real time as content for the screens on the show floor is amended and scheduled; and the ISE Blogger Lounge, sponsored by the DailyDOOH.

For more information go to page 29.

Learn more about the digital advertising revolution at the 2010 DOOH Business Conference, 1–2 February After its successful debut in 2009, the DOOH Business Conference returns to ISE this year with a must-see programme of briefings from industry experts in the fields of creative content, network management, technology deployment and aggregation, among others. The first DOOH event to truly consider the past, present, and future of digital advertising, this year’s Conference is being presented by ISE in association with Invidis Consulting and OVAB Europe. Residential solutions at ISE 2010 With more companies showing products with residential applications than ever before, ISE is now firmly established as the European tradeshow for custom installation, home AV and building automation… From the latest in HD and 3D projection systems to multi-room audio, from lighting control and security to screens, furniture and mounts, ISE’s Residential Solutions Area has it all. Conveniently located at the junction of Halls 1, 4 and 5 of the Amsterdam RAI, this part of ISE has as its centrepiece the headquarters booth of CEDIA, the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association – one of ISE’s two supporting not-for-profit bodies and the location for a wide range of education sessions, many of them FREE to attend. As in 2009, this Area will also feature the Home Cinema Europe booth – a unique showcase in which products from a range of different companies can be seen, heard, and even felt, all working together in a compelling and ultra-realistic home-theatre environment. In total, more than 50 of the world’s top custom installation and home AV brands will be represented in the Residential Solutions Area in 2010. But, for those in the business of systems integration in the home, there will be far more to ISE 2010 – with over 100 additional exhibitors elsewhere on the show floor showing products relevant to home system control, distribution, automation and display.

Education highlight: CEDIA’s TCP/IP for integrators, 09:45–12:45, Thursday 4 February More and more systems, equipment and media are converging to work over a simple, reliable and elegant IP network. Taught in English and not ‘geek speak’, this session is suitable for anyone who wants to embrace the inevitable and start leveraging all these new IPenabled products in ways that are logical, deliver high performance to the end user, and increase profit margins for the installer. Staging technology and the ISE Theatre As the convergence between video and lighting gathers pace and network distribution becomes the norm, staging technology is gaining a higher profile at ISE – with a custom-built Theatre on the show floor as a focal point…

Large-screen projection, high-power audio, LEDbased video solutions and network technology lie at the heart of a revolution in AV for rental and staging applications. ISE has acted as a showcase for many of these technologies and 2010 will be no exception, with many new exhibitors from the fields of professional audio, automated lighting, and multi-image processing, to name just three. Acting as the focal point for some of these developments, the ISE Theatre returns to Hall 10, providing a unique event space within the show floor where attendees can learn about the latest trends in AV system design for rental and staging, along with sessions on collaborative conferencing, the design of future-ready homes, and much more. All sessions are free to attend, but remember – arrive early to be guaranteed a seat at the event of your choice, as demand for places often exceeds supply.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

Peerless is launching a new range of articulating and tilting Slimline wall-mounts at ISE, adding to the awardwinning, world’s slimmest, flat-to-wall products that were introduced earlier in the year. These products are the perfect complement to the latest generation of super-thin panels, ensuring the lowest profile mounting and thereby saving the maximum space in any installation.

commercial-grade 46” LCD panels with breakthrough narrow-bezel characteristics resulting in just a 7.3mm pixel-to-pixel gap between screens. Architected by Planar’s video wall industry experts, Clarity Matrix makes the most of LCD technology’s slim profile and vibrant visual performance while easing the difficulties in achieving perfect alignment, optimal cooling and simplified service and extended operation.

There are two fully articulating Slimline mounts suitable for 32-46in and 37-56in screens respectively, which both retract to position the screen less than 30mm from the wall. Full extension of over 600mm provides the ability to pivot the screen through a full 180 degrees. Peerless also has two new ultra-slim tilting flat panel mounts that offer the versatility of up to +17.5° forward and -5° backward tilt to ensure the ideal viewing angle even when the screen is positioned above or below eye level. These models incorporate an innovative extension feature enabling sufficient space for hands-free installation and easy access to the rear of the screen. “The flat-to-wall products in the Slimline range set a new standard in discrete wall-mounting,” says Gordon Dutch, Managing Director of Peerless-AV Europe. “However, the addition of tilt and fully articulating models provide added flexibility for installers and presents an ultra low-profile solution for any situation.”

Measuring only 130 x 215 x 41 mm, the DS-001 power size and power weight ratios are unequalled and effectively bullet-proof construction ensures superb reliability with audio performance belying both its size and weight. The ultra compact dimensions enable the unit to be used in free standing, rack mounted, wall mounted, or speaker mounted configurations, enabling the highly effective ‘powerpacking’ of any number of compact monitor designs, especially useful for free standing surround sound, or console mounted monitor positioning. Accessories include a rack mount kit that creates up to eight individual channels.

We focus on innovative tab tensioned projection screen for the following reasons: – Always a guaranteed flat projection surface. – A tensioned projection surface can withstand changes in temperature and humidity better than a non-tensioned surface. – The resilience of the tensioned material will result in an even longer life cycle of the product. – When detail in projection is important a per- fectly flat tensioned surface is necessary.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

What is special about the Projecta tab tensioned projection materials? We use special non-supported materials that are specifically designed for this application. Every size has its own parabolic shape to achieve the best result. This calculation also holds future tensioning into account when defining the curvature, so the screen material stays flat over years to come.

PMC is also introducing bespoke printed speaker grilles to compliment the wafer series of on-wall loudspeakers.  The acoustically transparent, printed speaker grilles offer style and individuality to any home and its entertainment system.  All grilles are fully interchangeable with a range of image styles. A varied selection allows the user to adopt a new room theme to suit the mood and enhance any interior.   Also showcasing – the new fact® series, i-series, wafer™ in/on walls, the new activated TB2S-AII, and a pre-release model from the PMC Active range on stand 11i31. www.pmc-speakers.com

The DOOH Business Conference 2010: Learn from the past, prepare for the future The DOOH Business Conference 2010 has been conceived with a clear set of goals and objectives in mind. Comprising three distinct ‘blocks’, the Conference will be the first of its kind to consider first-generation digital advertising rollouts and what can be learned from them. Now in its second year, the DOOH Business Conference has already established itself as a premier networking and discussion summit for Europe’s out-of-home advertising industry. Co-located with ISE, the Conference begins on Monday, 1 February (the day before the show opens) and continues into the morning of the following day. This year, for the first time, the Conference includes a VIP Preview of Hall 12 of ISE (the Digital Signage Hall) on the Monday evening, together with a guided tour of the acclaimed ‘RAI Live!’ digital signage system at the Amsterdam venue after the Conference sessions have concluded on Tuesday, 2 February. Here are five great reasons to register NOW for the DOOH Business Conference 2010:

CITY

Amsterdam – the host city that never fails to deliver A central location, countless tourist sights, wonderful nightlife and above all an outwardlooking attitude make Amsterdam the perfect place to do business

For all but two years, ISE has been based at the Amsterdam RAI – a venue that seems ideally suited to our industry with its wide range of halls, its friendly and experienced staff, its superb digital signage and many other benefits. But there is more to Amsterdam than just the RAI, and visitors tell us time and again that the city itself is one of their key reasons for coming to ISE. As well as being a great place to do business, Amsterdam has an almost unlimited range of relaxation options, both cultural and hedonistic.

Getting there… Schiphol Airport is one of Europe’s largest international hubs and is served by daily flights from literally hundreds of cities throughout the world. Once you arrive, both the RAI and the city centre are no more than a 15-minute train ride away. In association with our official partner, RAI Hotel & Travel Service, we are able to offer discounted air fares not only from European cities but from locations across the world. For more details go to: www.rai.nl/hotelservice If you prefer to travel by train, we have again partnered with Deutsche Bahn to offer discounted fares to and from any station in Germany. A second-class return is just 119 2 while the first-class alternative is 179 2. On a second-class ticket, this would mean a saving of over 100 2 if travelling to and from Frankfurt, for example. To take advantage of this offer, simply call: +49 (0) 1805 311 153, quoting Integrated Systems Europe as a reference.

In the city… Amsterdam’s attractions do not begin and end with the famed affability of its people. If art is your think, then the city’s many galleries – most notably the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, which are conveniently located almost next-door to each other – are the envy of the world, and rightly so. For music and theatre, traditional venues such as the Concertgebouw, Stadsschouwburg

and Carré have been joined by more avant-garde locations such as the Bimhuis. Amsterdam’s many bars, cafés and restaurants will provide you with almost any kind of cuisine you can think of, and while standards are high, the intense competition keeps prices reasonable. You don’t need to break the bank to dine well in this city. Perhaps best of all – particularly for those with weary feet after a day at Europe’s largest AV tradeshow – Amsterdam’s excellent tram and metro system will whisk you between all these attractions for no more than a few euros. For more information please visit: www.iamsterdam. com

Stay in the right place, at the right price… ISE’s official accommodation partner, Amsterdam RAI Hotel & Travel Service (RHTS), arranges hotel accommodation in and around Amsterdam. They do this for dozens of large and small events every year, arranging thousands of hotel reservations for conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs and other events. As a result they have excellent knowledge and booking experience of the hotels in and around the Dutch capital. This includes hotels in the vicinity of Amsterdam RAI, the centre of Amsterdam, close to Schiphol Airport and in cities in the west of Holland. Just let the team know what you are looking for and they will quickly compile a list of great hotels. They’ll organize every detail of the reservation, leaving you free to concentrate on other things. To take advantage of special discounts exclusively available to ISE attendees, please visit: www.rai.nl/hotelservice or call: +31 (0) 20 549 1927
