WHAT’S NEW

WHAT’S NEW AT ISE 2015? Alongside an increase in new and returning exhibitors showcasing over 1000 new product innovations, ISE is introducing new features to its show floor to make your time there extra special

A new show-floor theatre Following the success of ISE 2014, the ISE Theatres will return to the show floor and include the addition of the ISE Unified Communications Theatre. Located in Hall 9 this Theatre will stage case-study presentations by manufacturers, product distributors, systems integrators and end customers. They will focus on the practical aspects of implementing collaboration and communication systems within businesses. Meanwhile, the Residential Solutions Theatre (sponsored by Vutec) and the Commercial Solutions (sponsored by Microsoft) will return to Hall 7 and Hall 8, respectively. Extra areas to help you unwind This year ISE is providing extra areas on the show floor that will really help visitors take a break and unwind during the event. Extra catering areas in the Park Foyer and Ruby Lounge will be available, as well as the return of the Business Lounge 6 | RISE 2015

located on the fly-over between Halls 7 and 8. This will offer free WiFi access, work and meeting stations as well as mobile device charging points. With modern seating the lounge will be an informal and professional environment in which you can take time to work, relax or network. The Business Lounge, provided with furniture from the company Bene, will be open from 9am – 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9am – 5pm on Thursday. Discover something new Owing to its popularity at ISE 2014, an extra Discovery Zone has been added to Hall 6. The Discovery Zone offers new ISE Exhibitors the chance to participate in the show within a dedicated showcase area. In the same hall, a new US Pavilion will host stands from US exhibitors looking to integrate into the European market. The Pavilion is organised in cooperation with the US Commercial Service, which is offering its support to the participating exhibitors and networking events.

All InfoComm ISE sessions are FREE to members

CEDIA returns to ISE 2015 with extensive education programme

The IMCCA to present an information rich programme at ISE 2015

ISE co-owner InfoComm International is making ALL its regular InfoComm University education classes free to members at ISE 2015. Members will save the normal €40 registration fee on all classes hosted in the Professional Development Zone, as well as benefitting from member pricing for InfoComm’s MasterClass with Bob Simpson and the CTS Study Session. Not an InfoComm member? New for ISE 2015, the association is offering a Guest Membership package that will grant attendees all of the above, plus a further three months of member benefits, completely free of charge. See page 73 for more details!

Building on a successful show in 2014, CEDIA will be delivering an extensive training programme incorporating 24 new and existing courses at the show. With training remaining a key attraction at ISE, CEDIA has expanded its education programme to focus on technical training, business development and industry developments. Of the 24 expert workshops, CEDIA will be offering four one-day training courses and twenty 90 minute sessions. A number of new courses have been introduced this year, including an introduction to KNX and BMS, “Atmos, Auro 3D and more”, “Ecological Automation – the Basics of Energy”, “Fifty First Dates – Online Marketing” and “Working Profitably with Architects”. Delegates can take advantage of an early bird discount rate of 10% on courses booked before the 16th January 2015.

In the Unified Communications Theater (Hall 9) end-users working with the newest collaborative tools and technologies will present details of their experiences and the challenges they faced as they shopped for, designed and deployed solutions. They will highlight which products met their needs and which ones did not perform as required. Attendees will learn about the potential pitfalls so they can benefit from the prior experience of others. In the Commercial Solutions Theatre (Hall 8), IMCCA will be leading panel discussions about the latest technology trends in collaboration. Learn about UCaaS and Cloud, and find out about the differences between the numerous Virtual Meeting Room solutions on the market. Some of the areas covered will be: will software replace hardware systems for collaboration, or are the new hardware options so compelling that they will gain market share?

SBC AMSTERDAM

SMART BUILDING CONFERENCE BUILDS INDUSTRY FUTURE Being held in the RAI on 9th February, this could be the most important conference for the future of your business…

Y

ou can’t talk about automobiles without talking about highways; and you can’t easily talk about airplanes without bringing up airports and air control.

by Bob Snyder Editor of Channel Media Europe Ltd. and Content Chairman and Moderator of the Smart Building Conference series.

In a world where everything runs over IP, it becomes harder and harder to talk about transporting audio and video without discussing the rooms and the buildings that give our industry real-world context. We’ve always respected rooms: we’ve talked about room acoustics, room lighting, distance from screen, in-wall versus on-wall kit… In audio/video installation, we’ve talked a lot about rooms. And room automation came long before building automation. Digital disruption. It’s the rock-androll in an industry as it moves from the old world of analogue and mechanical controls to running over Internet Protocol. The Smart Building Conference taking place on 9th February, organized by ISE, is unique. It introduces our industry to the other players; and it introduces their industries to us. The Conference features two tracks (smart buildings and smart homes) but comes together for a number of keynotes relevant to all where some of the best minds share their thoughts. What you learn, who you meet, and the ideas you’ll get for your business to grow… we’re analyzing the knock-on change in our own business as the building industry transforms. “Software is eating the world.” Marc Andreessen once said. As coauthor of the first widely-used Web browser, he was trying to capture the flavor of the digital disruption. As most core systems and processes already run on software, almost all business will face digitalization and run on

software over IP. And buildings are a business. Even the home (or rather, the home-building) is a business. And their business of building rooms, homes, and offices surrounds and encompasses our own AV business. We live in their world and their world is changing Buildings face major challenges (new ones as well as older ones that have dogged humans since we took it into our heads that we could build our own places instead of holding up in caves) including heating/cooling, lighting, fire and safety, parking, security and access, lifts and stairs, water and power. As well as challenges, disruption creates opportunity; it’s the silver-lining in the cloud (literally… in The Cloud). The building industry can reduce cost and increase control if the builders can put all their interests onto one network—instead of the dozen or so “silos” of control they had under an analogue regime. If they can create an IP backbone, and all aspects of the building can be monitored via one smart interface, a cockpit control that brings together all relevant information so you can better see and understand inter-relationships—then the building industry can move from “intelligent buildings” to smart buildings. The great news for our industry: we will no longer be “luxuries” in the building industry. We are getting promoted to must-have status and will get our own place at the table. A place created by the fact IP is the great unifier and we are IP-ready, wifi and mobile devices are now part of our daily function, as well as the oncoming innovation from Internet-of-Things, Big Data and The Cloud. The building industry now realizes the building isn’t a smart building until it recognises what the people who inhabit the building want to do while in that structure (and what tools and conditions might help them live, work or perform better). This is not just about Smart Buildings: it’s about Smarter AV. Visit www.smartbuildingconference.com to see the full programme and how to register.

WOMEN OF INFOCOMM

WOMEN OF INFOCOMM NETWORK COMES TO ISE After several years of offering programmes aimed at professional women in the AV industry, InfoComm International has started a new council – Women of InfoComm Network (WIN) and it’s hosting a member event at ISE 2015

T

he goal of the group is to provide a global community of women and men committed to supporting and empowering the women working in the industry. All women and men whom are current members of InfoComm are welcome to become members of this council. The group will include all job functions, companies, industries and vertical markets. The first chair of the group will be Erin Bolton, Vice President of Digital Solutions, MarketStar.

Women of InfoComm Network will provide a community for connections, resources, education, recognising excellence, promoting leadership and identifying opportunities for the advancement of female executives in the audiovisual industry through InfoComm. The group will also raise awareness of gender diversity by promoting the achievements and excellence of women in technology professions. There will be quarterly conference calls and a LinkedIn Group.

the council will be soliciting participants for their feedback on what types of programs or activities they would like to see from InfoComm before heading to the show floor. The event costs €40 and registration is available on www.iseurope.org. Other 2015 activities being held by the Women of InfoComm Network include a meet-up at InfoComm Connections San Jose, California, a breakfast at InfoComm 2015, luncheons at Tecnomultimedia Brazil, Tecnomultimedia Mexico, InfoComm India and Tecnomultimedia Colombia, and a reception at Integrate, in Melbourne, Australia. InfoComm hopes that both women and men will participate in the Council, as it is important for industry leaders from both genders to promote gender diversity, equality and mentorship.

According to Betsy Jaffe, Vice President of Communications, InfoComm International, “In the male dominated technology/AV industry, raising the visibility of women and awareness of gender diversity is absolutely critical. Less than 10 percent of attendees at the InfoComm show in the US and the ISE show are women,” she says. “Women look to InfoComm to provide a global community of women and men passionate about supporting and empowering women in the technology sector, and this council gives them a home in the Association.” 14 | RISE 2015

The group hopes to have 250 members by the end of 2015 and will be hosting a number of member events around the world. At ISE 2015, Women of InfoComm Network will host a breakfast on the morning of Wednesday, 11 February, from 8 – 9:30 in the First Floor restaurant. The event will be led by Sarah Joyce, Vice President, EMEA, Electrosonic, a member of the InfoComm Board of Directors. She will be joined by a panel of other female industry leaders to discuss the issues facing women in technology fields. In the last final part of the programme

CONVERGENCE

COME TOGETHER… Distinctions between broadcast, consumer and AV markets are becoming blurred – converging on similar technologies to address similar preoccupations such as 4K, IP, and multi-screen. As Ian McMurray finds out

T

he convergence that’s becoming apparent in the AV industry is being brought about by the ubiquity of networking - and overarching everything are the three ‘big ideas’ of the current decade, all of which are enabled by the network: the Cloud, the Internet of Things and Big Data. Those big ideas are no less applicable to the AV industry. Connecting anything and everything “With the continued momentum behind the Internet of Things, it is arguably the hottest technology topic right now,” claims Paul Williams, VP of Security and Communications Products at Control4. “Allowing us to connect nearly everything and anything to the Internet, embedded technologies and connectivity has opened a door to Big Data, giving us insight into things like efficiency and activity levels.” “It’s all about connectivity and integration – so, in building and home automation, technologies like wi-fi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth LE, NFC and so on will be key. Although these wireless communications standards are all different, each has particular strengths that play into the growth of the Internet of Things.” Robin van Meeuwen, President and CEO of Crestron International, places the same emphasis on connectivity. “BACnet/IP communication delivers significant benefit as it enables local devices to connect to a BMS and run independently, as well as communicate on the same platform, and in the process create a truly smart building,” he says. “Beyond that, visitors will be on the lookout for automation systems that are easily configurable and require no programming.” 4K: is this the year? If connectivity, integration and convergence are among the hot topics at ISE, another will be whether 2015 turns out to be the year 4K resolution takes off? “How quickly 4K/UHD can become as much of a standard as HD is today – that’s the question,” says Thorsten Prsybyl, Product Line Manager for Public Displays at NEC Display Solutions Europe.

“The switch to UHD is already taking place. Think CAD / CAM, simulation, control rooms, medical and so on - don’t just think retail signage.” “The connectivity that allows the infrastructure to support 4K is one of the key topics people are talking about,” he continues. “While DisplayPort 1.2 already fully supports 4K/UHD, the update of the HDMI standard to 2.0 will be an important development. The new HDBaseT 2.0 standard will be relevant for users having to cover longer distances between source and screen or projector.” Michael Khain, Co-Founder and Vice President of Engineering and Product Development at Atlona, is bullish. “ISE 2015 attendees should be prepared to see everything 4K, starting from displays, to projectors, to distribution systems and finishing up with video walls,” he says. “Beyond that, customers expect products specified today to provide future-proof capability for their system designs. For example, products with 4K upscaling and downscaling technology are critical.” Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign, believes 4K as being a topic of great interest for those in the digital signage industry. “4K will continue to be a focus area for many visitors,” he says. “Visitors will want to see evidence of the complete 4K ecosystem becoming mainstream reality in commercial AV applications.” And, he believes, those visitors are now much more educated. “They will appreciate the distinction between ‘true 4K’ and ‘near 4K’ implementations. Viewed side by side, the difference will be readily apparent. This year I think folks will be moving from the “cool technology” stage to “how do I deploy this technology” stage at ISE for 4K.” Projectors fighting back Many visitors to ISE will be focusing on how the projector world is standing up to what can look like erosion of its market by increasingly large screens that are growing in quality and falling in price. “Projectors have been at the forefront of delivering 4K resolution and continue to enable a more engaging, more immersive experience

»The Cloud The attraction of Cloud computing is simple: it provides resources – whether processing or storage – on an ‘as needed’ basis, increasing flexibility and reducing cost. At the other end of the scale, consumers are, increasingly looking to the Cloud for storage, as well as for software - such as Microsoft’s Office 365 - they would have previously purchased outright.

28 | RISE 2015

than is possible any other way,” says Damien Weissenburger, Head of Presentation and Communications at Sony Professional, Solutions Europe.

Data, data everywhere

Weissenburger notes, “The new illumination technology can display pin-sharp 4K images,” he continues, “and is already addressing concerns about durability and RoI.” He is also confident that projectors will remain highly relevant in the AV market as the focus on integration through networking intensifies. “Delivering an end-to-end AV infrastructure, from professional displays to video conferencing, all of which work in the context of the meeting room or the classroom, will be key,” he believes.

“Alternative light source technology will impact the market the most in the near future, in our opinion,” confirms Fredrik Sjostedt, VP of Corporate Marketing at Barco. He also notes the growing impact of Big Data on the industry. “A versatile content management platform that processes and manages the vast quantity of available data through interactive channels, from any source to any device anywhere - be it fixed or mobile - will be key. An increasing complexity of available data leads to an increased demand for flexible visualisation and collaboration tools.”

A particularly notable development in the projection world in recent times has been the advent of the short throw and ultra-short throw projector – such as Epson’s EB-1410Wi - which, coupled with interactive white boards, have made a significant inroad into the education market. The company’s Leonie Toal, however, makes a case for projection well beyond education – in videoconferencing, for example. “Projection technology has been developed to share a single PC screen with network-connected projectors where annotations from any one of these projectors can be displayed on the remaining three,” she points out. “Mobile devices are also central to this, with applications like the Epson iProjection App enabling wireless projection from both iOS and Android mobile devices, while also acting as projector control and supporting Cloud storage devices such as Dropbox.”

The transition to new illumination paradigms is also noticeable in the world of videowalls.

A convergence trend that is becoming inescapable in the AV world is how professionals are both accommodating and leveraging consumer devices. BYOD has, in many instances, morphed into CYOD, admittedly, as IT departments attempt to wrest back control, but portable screens, whoever owns them, are now front and centre. “I think we will see an increase in smart phone management being used for the control of AV systems,” says Mike Cuckow, Sales Director, EMEA Asia Pacific at Cabletime. “The consumerisation of IT trend has brought confidence to the end user simply through familiarity with devices. They can easily, efficiently and affordably provide access to AV content in addition to the configuration and management of systems.”

Video: any time, any place Paul Reeves, Regional Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa at VBrick, warms to the theme. “ISE visitors will be looking for ways to handle the massive influx of video throughout their organisations,” he believes, “a trend fuelled by the adoption of video-capable smartphones and tablets, and advances in mobile broadband and streaming technologies. Video is now a mainstream content type in business and one that requires unique and specialised management and distribution.” “Large organisations are increasingly seeking enterprise video platforms that can help them manage a wide array of issues,” he continues, “from creating video content through capturing video from existing unified communications systems to creating TV-quality live executive webcasts.” Integrating consumer devices and leveraging the Cloud are also convergence themes in the unified communications/videoconferencing business. Andreas Wienold, VP International at Lifesize identifies three key themes for ISE 2015. The first two are the consumerisation of technology and the need to communicate with an increasingly dispersed workforce. “The third,” says Wienold, “will be the prevalence of the Cloud which is driving a profound shift in how people and businesses think and operate. Infrastructure as a service offering, such as Amazon Web Services and the IBM Cloud, have finally grown to support the bandwidth and stability people expect. Functionality that used to be driven by expensive, in-house hardware and servers now exists in the Cloud. This will result in a new wave of Cloud-based offerings in the enterprise.” Wienold’s vision is shared by Marc Cremer, COO of Revolabs. “As Cloud-based video conferencing solutions become more and more prevalent with the rise of remote work forces. I expect “bridging” technology to be a focus,” he says. “This technology enables disparate service offerings from various vendors to interoperate thus enabling users to collaborate more effectively. In the end, this system agnostic approach to enabling video conferencing will help to facilitate broader deployments.” UC/VC: ‘fundamental’ changes Anders Løkke of Pexip also sees profound developments taking place in videoconferencing. “Dramatic changes are happening in the UC&C industry,” he believes. “A move away from traditional video and collaboration solutions

marks a strong shift towards software-based infrastructure and services,” he says.

»The Internet of Things

He continues, “IT-centric software-based approaches will continue to gain momentum through 2015 in UC&C. It can be argued that ITcentric approaches, fuelled chiefly by the advent of Microsoft’s Lync collaboration platform, will play a major part of the industry over the coming year. The most important issue is clear — how to integrate Lync with traditional videoconferencing and collaboration solutions.”

The history of the Internet has been about interaction between people. That interaction, extensive as it is, promises to be dwarfed by interaction between ‘things’ – the Internet of Things. Five years ago, the number of interconnected ‘things’ was 900 million. By 2020, according to some analysts, that number will be 26 billion.

In the audio world, there’s that same sense of convergence – once again, around the network. “The discussion at ISE will be about IP, IP - and IP,” laughs Ervin Grinberg, Director of Marketing at Audinate, and the originators of the Dante media networking technology. “Layer 3 IP networks are the present and future.” And, yes, the audio world is seeing demand for it to leverage Big Data. “IT/AV managers are expecting to see more troubleshooting tools giving them insight into network status and health, latency monitoring, network clock accuracy and other management information tools,” adds Grinberg. Audio is also, in its way, embracing the Internet of Things. “We’ve been working on solutions that allow you to virtually connect everything onto the Ethernet IP network,” says Grinberg, “USB microphones, headphones, speakers and FireWire I/O devices will be all be networkable.” There’s little doubt that technologies like Dante and the AVB standard are important – but for Graeme Harrison, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Biamp Systems, there are more significant things to talk about. Harrison clearly sees the direction in which the audio market is moving. “Increasingly, it’s about the interconnectivity of audio equipment to adjacent ecosystems,” he says. No industry or market exists in isolation over the long term. Look, for example, at how consumer electronics have become an integral part of automobile design or at how tightly integrated the printing industry now is with the computing industry. ‘Convergence’ is an unstoppable force – and the extent to which it’s no less irresistible in the AV industry will be a key theme for ISE 2015.

»Big Data An outflow of the Internet of Things is Big Data. With millions – billions – of sensorequipped devices connected with each other, the availability of data has exploded and will continue to do so. Captured and analysed appropriately, that data has the potential to deliver valuable information. In the AV world, as networking becomes more pervasive and products more missioncritical, the onus is on the industry to use that information to predict and eliminate failure, and to optimise performance.

CEDIA CASE STUDY

RESIDENTIAL INSTALLATIONS THRILL AT CEDIA AWARDS 2014 Two spectacular home installations achieve high praise at the CEDIA Awards 2014. RISE finds out more…

BEACHFRONT RESIDENCE WITH INTELLIGENT HOME AUTOMATION

C

ypriot installer, Lifestyle Technologies, has been highly commended in the Best Integrated Home £100,000 - £250,000 category at the CEDIA Awards 2014 for a state-of-the-art, luxury home on the coast of Cyprus.

Lifestyle Technologies was briefed to design and install an integrated control system in a magnificent property in the southern coastal city of Limassol. There were four elements to the project: extensive entertainment facilities, environmental control incorporating energy saving features, security system with remote monitoring and a secure wireless network infrastructure. The client‘s overriding request was for complete and easy control, with access from any location. To achieve the client‘s dream of a luxurious, hi-tech lifestyle, the installer specified a full Crestron home automation system. Crestron enables complete integration of all the required systems including lighting, shutters, AV, security, HVAC and irrigation. For lighting and climate control, 30 | RISE 2015

Crestron‘s seamless system integration means rooms look their best, while maximising the comfort and enjoyment of the occupants. The electric windows are programmed to work in conjunction with the roller blinds.

Similarly, the house boasts a range of video sources, including two HD satellite receivers and a networked LG Blu-ray 3D media player, distributed through the house in high definition using a 16 zone Crestron DigitalMedia system.

The client can access preprogrammed light levels and scenes, or create their own 'atmosphere' according to their mood or chosen activity. The swimming pool has been turned into a night-time feature of the garden with the addition of colour changing light effects. As an energy saving feature, Crestron Green Light occupancy sensors automatically adjust the lighting according to room usage.

The residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to viewing options with four media rooms, living room, playroom, basement 'cigar' room and master bedroom. Each features a 60“ or 55“ LED display, and delivers crystal clear surround sound through stylish Cabbase Eole speakers matched with Marantz AV receivers. On the veranda, a 42“ TV sits on a Unitech motorized lift, for convenient and discreet storage. The Jacuzzi room and the en suite to the master bedroom also have Agath mirror TVs embedded into the walls.

The Mitsubishi VRF air conditioning is integrated with the home automation system, using a CoolMaster control adapter, along with the hot water pumps and heating. As a result, the house now benefits from an intelligent HVAC system. Using smart temperature control, and monitoring of the heating and air conditioning, throughout the residence, energy consumption is kept to a minimum. A Crestron Sonnex digital audio distribution system fills 24 predefined interior and exterior zones with music, played through elegant and discreet Elan in-ceiling speakers and Bose weatherproof speakers. To accommodate individual tastes, seven iPod docks with six CD/MP3 changers have been installed locally and an AirPlay enabled Wi-Fi router, along with a CD/MP3 changer and FM Tuners, have been fitted centrally. The occupants have the option of listening to a specific source or for multiple zones to be linked together.

All the house services, integrated by Crestron, can be operated through a single device, a handheld remote, touch panel or Smart device. Across the residence, the installer has fixed a range of wireless remotes and 4“, 7“ and 10“ wall-mounted touch screens, iPad Minis with tabletop docks and an iRoom in-wall dock for an iPad Air, all situated for easy access. Lifestyle Technologies‘ successful project brings together the diverse technology in this home and makes it easily accessible through a userfriendly interface. www.lifestyle-technologies.com

TRIPLE RECOGNITION FOR ANDREW LUCAS

T

he creative remodelling of a stunning, luxury one-bedroom apartment has been honoured in three categories in the CEDIA Awards 2014. Integration firm Andrew Lucas London won the Best Lighting Scheme over £25,000 and Best Innovative Solution categories and was highly commended in Best Integrated Home over £250,000. The complex and challenging brief demanded a control system, integrating all house sub-systems including audio, visual, lighting, window treatment, alarm and HVAC. It also specified a multi-room audio and video distribution system, and IT network with robust Wi-Fi. One of the main architectural features of the apartment is an eightmetre tall library wall. The client wanted Andrew Lucas to incorporate a high-end AV system into the unit which complemented its aesthetics and grandeur. In its CEDIA Award winning Best Innovative Solution, Andrew Lucas created a modular system whereby each speaker enclosure is positioned within its own cubby hole lined with noise damping material. Each enclosure is attached to the one below via threaded rods, and specially manufactured nuts, and, ultimately, bolted to a base secured to the concrete floor. Specially sourced rubber washers ensure the enclosures remain sealed for acoustic purposes. Custom-made grilles fit snugly into the joinery to conceal the speakers. A Sony Ultra High Definition 84” TV is flush-mounted into the towering wall. The speakers, designed by the

installer‘s in-house acoustician, consist of eight subwoofers, four mid-range speakers and two tweeters. They are powered by a Denon DN- 500AV and three Crown power amplifiers to ensure excellent headroom without distortion. A highend Blu-ray player has also been customised and recessed into the joinery, so that the only trace of it is a thin slot for inserting discs. Lighting was another area of particular innovation. The client desired a sophisticated and 'intelligent' lighting system which would highlight the key architectural features, create different atmospheres and scenes, be easily adjustable according to activity and yet offer incredible ease of use. He also wanted the facility to integrate with several other home elements, including 50 motorised shades, AV and the alarm system. Due to the complex nature of the lighting system, Andrew Lucas selected Lutron HomeWorks QS as the lighting control system. Lutroncompatible TruFig faceplates were employed throughout to make the keypads flush with the whitewashed walls for a clean, elegant finish. Despite having just one bedroom, the apartment makes use of no less than 82 lighting circuits as well as 136 DMX channels. To meet the requirement for a clean minimalist finish, the lighting enclosures are discreetly recessed behind mirrors and doors. Two designer 'jewel boxes' form a focal point of the property. Each features RGB panels, allowing them to assume an almost limitless range of colours from soft pastel lighting to vibrant colour washes or even vibrant

disco colours, so transforming the room at the touch of a button. The grandeur of the library wall is highlighted by the incorporation of pin spotlights within the cubby holes, replicating twinkling stars and beautifully illuminating the artwork positioned within. A plinth containing LED strips, forward of the shelves, causes the whole wall to to glow softly. The Barrisol ceiling, with its sharp illuminated edges, is accentuated by LED feature lighting, which can either flood the area with light or gently illuminate like starlight. The result perfectly matches the client‘s concept for the structure of sails on a ship. An added 'wow' factor comes from custom designed buttons on the Lutron keypads. 'Away' dims the lights sequentially and slowly guides the occupant to the front door, while 'Home' actions the reverse sequence. Similarly, 'Goodnight' gradually turns the lights off and powers down any AV elements that are switched on. Furthermore, a movie button causes the lights to dim slowly to a comfortable film viewing level whilst powering up the 84” TV and local Blu-ray player. The client is delighted with the outcome of the demanding project with the lighting system, in particular, significantly enhancing the aesthetics, ambience and appeal of the property. www.andrew-lucas.com

INFOCOMM CASE STUDY

THE NEW LOOK QEII CENTRE InfoComm member, The Queen Elizabeth II Centre, implemented an extensive refurbishment programme in 2014 to give the popular central London venue a true ‘wow factor’

T

he Queen Elizabeth II Centre is the largest dedicated events venue in Central London hosting over 400 national and international clients per year. In 2014 it experienced a £12 million refurbishment providing aesthetic and visual improvements to enhance the customer journey. Connectivity at its core The key change is in 'connectivity‘. In literal terms the remodelled foyer has been transformed and a feature staircase aids the transition from this space to the newly refurbished Pickwick Suite, alongside the principal auditorium - the Churchill. This is completed by state-of-the art digital registration signage; a 9 screen, feature videowall; and a Media Suite, complete with high definition videoconferencing (Radvision) plus upgraded free wifi in the new Sanctuary executive lounge and cafe.

The registration area includes 26 high definition NEC screens for the customers‘ own registration content or ‘text only’ in the house style. This is drawn from a field in the database as part of the Centre‘s Event Diary system (2560 x 1080 pixels). These screens support static and moving graphics and are flown via standard Unicol brackets, adjustable sideways to ensure they can be positioned over the appropriate desk. The videowall (3840 x 2160 pixels) is available for advertising opportunities and the majority of clients purchase a 30 second 'slot' within a playlist, thus generating additional revenue for the centre. Both systems use the ONELAN digital signage software. All operational staff have undergone training and can enter content into a playlist. There are various RSS feeds incorporated into the main playlist and sound 'bars' either side provide background audio as required. A powered wireless speaker (Sennheiser LSP500) supplies background music and microphone links via touchscreen controls.

Future proof AV/IT Using Hewlett Packard (HP) Communications, the QEII Centre has also recently upgraded its fibre backbone. Its incoming 1Gbps bandwidth is serviced by Meru wireless access points (450mbps capability) and the newly refurbished areas have boosted their coverage. The Centre has also added and replaced floor boxes, which now include hardwired LAN connections. These are all part of a IRF virtual switch (Intelligent Resilient Framework), which configures 7 floors above ground (28 rooms) and 3 floors below. A new Power Over Ethernet Avaya telephone system saves money by delivering power to where it is needed over one network infrastructure and also enables users to access telephone features from their PCs. The IPTV system runs across the client network and will be backed up using point-to-point fibre, installed by Feltech Electronics. The venue’s principal activity using this system is for sound and vision relay from plenary sessions to multiple breakout and/or exhibition and refreshment areas. QEII clients have found this especially useful when conferences have become overbooked and greater capacity has been required. This technology has also proven useful for servicing annual general

34 | RISE 2015

meetings when it has been impossible to gauge final attendance numbers in advance. Refurbishment is ongoing although the main structural changes occurred within 6 weeks during August 2014. Alongside the architectural changes the centre is undergoing a re-branding programme, firmly consolidating the QEII Centre‘s position as a foremost event venue partner. Promoting industry quality The Centre has been an InfoComm member since 2006 and several of its staff are CTS qualified, thus demonstrating its commitment to the audiovisual industry and the continual professional development. The Queen Elizabeth II Centre would highly recommend InfoComm membership to other centres, not only for the educational element but also because InfoComm exhibitions, including Integrated Systems Europe, are a valuable and informative experience that ensure its members are always at the cutting edge of technological developments. www.qeiicentre.london www.infocomm.org

DIGITAL SIGNAGE

SIGNS O’ THE TIMES For anyone interested in the latest developments in digital signage, there’s only one place to be in February, as Ian McMurray discovers

I

SE 2015 sees 338 exhibitors with a digital signage offering to demonstrate to, and discuss with, visitors. This is evidence of both the size and growth in the digital signage market, and of ISE being the key place and forum to discover the latest developments. Centred on Hall 8 but scattered throughout the RAI, exhibitor efforts are, as always, complemented and supported by a broad range of educational opportunities, particularly the ISE Commercial Theatre in Hall 8. Capable, exciting, maturing, growing “Digital signage is continuing its rising growth trajectory,” believes Jennifer Davis, VP of Marketing at Planar Systems. “Driven by the desire to attract more people into public spaces, to engage them while they are there and to connect to consumers through mobile, social and physical interactions, the adoption will continue.” Daniel Parisien, BroadSign‘s Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, echoes her sentiment. “Digital signage is more capable and exciting than ever,” he says, “due to a maturing ecosystem that consists of automated audience measurement, smart content and mobile.”

ISE has historically been the ‘must go’ show for integrators looking for new business opportunities – and Serge Konter, Marketing Manager at SpinetiX, believes they’ll find them at ISE 2015. “We see a big market demand for professional yet simple digital signage products and solutions,” he notes. “Dealers and integrators without special technical or content creation skills would like to propose digital signage products to end customers – and they need to be able to quickly adopt the solution and create the content themselves. A lot of those small opportunities are available out there.”

Wider perspectives Digital signage has historically been largely associated with retail – if only because that’s where it’s become most visible. ISE 2015 also, however, provides the opportunity to look at the wider perspective of the market – applications such as wayfinding, corporate communications, healthcare, leisure and entertainment and education.

ISE also provides visitors with the opportunity to take on board fresh ideas – to think differently. Epson’s Leonie Toal, for example, makes a compelling case for projection in the digital signage world.

Those markets are opening up, believes Parisien. “Many of the earlier barriers to entry to digital signage have been brought down, opening it up to the mass market,” he claims. “Take the falling cost of media players. While heavy-duty media players are still needed in many cases, networks that can use a ‘good enough’ player to power more basic needs with the same efficiency are benefiting from significant cost savings.”

“There are no bezels to contend with,” she points out, “and it’s very easy to create very large, high quality, bright and colourful images that can be projected directly onto any white surface. It’s even possible to project onto curved or uneven walls where display units just aren’t feasible.”

Phil Gaut, Director of Display, Samsung UK and Ireland, has a specific example. “There is a big opportunity within smaller, independent retail outlets looking to replace current TV-based solutions with single, un-networked units,” he believes. “Many visitors will still be using second generation products

▶▶▶ RISE 2015 | 35

and will be looking to refresh or replace products. This presents a number of opportunities.” It is also the case in retail and DooH that the advertising agency business,(after a protracted period of resistance followed by suspicion) is starting to embrace digital signage as an effective, cost-competitive medium. Those already in the industry will likely take the opportunity presented by ISE 2015 to determine whether they should be preparing for 4K. Certainly, the screens and players are out there, and the infrastructure is falling into place – but just because it can be done doesn’t mean, necessarily, that it should be done. Here, the industry is in some disagreement.

2015: 4K will be stronger Davis is positive. “Today’s 4K adoption is being driven by high demand, as well as an ongoing trend of displays growing in size,” she says. “The ability to use 4K is certainly at hand. 2014 has been a strong year, but it will pale in comparison to the adoption in 2015 as the world and the workflows at agencies, brands and advertising companies get comfortable with the format.” Neither Parisien nor Konter are quite so sure. “4K is certainly striking to look at and is a compelling investment for spaces like highend retail stores,” says Parisien. “Right now, however, the files are very big; bandwidth and storage are the current blockers. The H.265 36 | RISE 2015

codec will be a help – but that raises another issue in terms of the horsepower needed to encode/ decode.”

That question has given rise to numerous innovations. QR codes have become a staple, as have NFC and Bluetooth to facilitate interaction with mobile devices. That’s been taken a stage further, with the integration of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Touch screens that invite interaction are now commonplace. “Engagement technologies can revolutionise the shopping experience,” says Gaut, “Technology such as beacon technology and wearable devices can change the retail experience for customers.”

“We don’t see a big demand for 4K,” adds Konter. “Of course, it’s nice for demonstrations - but then you need to change the way you create content, change the network, change the screens and cables… And if you see a digital signage screen from far away, resolution isn’t really an issue.” “4K is the big thing in the market at the moment,” notes Gaut, “but its uptake will be hindered by the lack of content creation. 2015 will see this change with more content created and therefore more investment in products.” “The adoption of 4K is hindered by perceptions around content availability,” contends Davis. ”People talk about the lack of content in broadcast or movie distribution and forget that most digital signage is run off PCs - or signage players - and many of them have been 4K capable for some time.” Getting engaged Whether 4K will be the de facto resolution in digital signage by the end of 2015 is uncertain? What’s important to remember, though, is that discussion about 4K is part of a broader discussion that has always existed in the digital signage community: what does it take to engage consumers?

Proximity sensing has been joined by a relatively recent development with digital signage systems that ‘recognise’ who is viewing the screen – by age and/or gender – and adapt the messaging accordingly. Signage triggered by external events – such as the installation in London, which reacted to British Airways flights overhead – also has the power to engage. For sure, ISE 2015 will be the place to discover ‘the next big thing’ in engagement technology. The key, as Konter points out, will be the ease with which those technologies can be implemented. For any company in – or thinking of getting into – the digital signage market, ISE 2015 promises to be the place where new markets, new technologies and new ideas can be found in almost every hall.

RESIDENTIAL TECHNOLOGY

HOME SWE From ever more sophisticated LED lighting control to the advent of Ultra HD, the David Davies looks at some of the residential trends set to illuminate ISE 2015

S

even or eight years ago it seemed as if it might not be too long before the vision of comprehensive home automation crossed over from the realm of luxury residences into the mass market. In reality, it didn’t quite pan out like that, and the truly allencompassing projects remain the reserve of the wealthy. But that does not mean that many of the constituent elements aren’t beginning to trickle down the value chain. The introduction and subsequent ubiquity of tablets has brought some degree of automation that extends beyond, for example, basic heating control within reach of most homeowners. And as Jonathan Murray, Business Development Manager at Edinburghbased integrator HTI remarks, tablets are also contributing to the emerging notion of a networked home for all. “What we might call the networked home is already here in some basic ways,” he says. “The likes of wireless routers, handheld tablets, Netflix and so on all contribute to create a networked home. Over time we are going to see a lot of devices take their part in the ‘internet of things’, and with companies not traditionally in this space – for example Apple and their Homekit, and Google with Nest – moving into the market, this is destined to increase.” Indeed, as indicated during several sessions at ISE’s Smart Building Conference in London in early October, the possible impact of global giants like Google and Amazon on more traditional residential technology providers is one of the

hot button topics for the industry at present. But if the outlook is uncertain, what of the trends that do seem more certain to shape the residential sector over the next 12 months? Control and command As energy-efficiency continues to drive LED adoption, it’s been no surprise to find the market awash with increasingly sophisticated LED dimming control solutions. But the fact is that LED technology can often bring challenges for installers with regard to maintaining control compatibility and dimming consistency. Several manufacturers demonstrated their efforts in this area at ISE 2014 – including Lutron with its seamless LED dimming control solution featuring the EcoSystem 5-Series LED driver – and one can reasonably expect more developments in this area at the 2015 event. Making even more flexible use of home automation technology is also manifesting itself in more powerful control capabilities across multiple devices. Another long-term ISE exhibitor, Control4, is among the many companies to be innovating in this area, with its Control4 Operating System designed to allow streamlined consistency across all touchpoints, including touchscreens, smartphones and tablets. Now, with the latest OS 2.6 software release, Control4 delivers greater functionality in the way that homeowners, for example, listen to music and control their pool and spa. Sales of dedicated control devices has certainly impacted upon a

The introduction and subsequent ub some degree of automation that ext heating control within reach of mo traditional core area of home automation technology production. But while manufacturers continue to offer bespoke controllers with exceptional levels of functionality, most have also embraced the world of app-based control from (thirdparty) tablets. Indeed, 2014 has been particularly rich in developments in this area and one should expect strong representation at ISE 2015. To pick one example, Crestron’s new Pyng solution has inarguably been one of the highest-profile residential technology launches of the year. Built ‘from the app up’, according to Crestron, the Pyng app allows technology integrators to create lifestyle scenes for each room, schedule events and more from an iPad – the result being that whole

EET HOME parameters of modern home technology are continually being redrawn. and previews some key CEDIA training sessions

Whatever happens, residential technology manufacturers won’t be found wanting for sets or switchers. New 4K-ready solutions were abundant at ISE 2014 – AMX Enova DGX Digital Media Switchers ready to support 4K and UHD content, to name an example – and plenty more of these at ISE 2015 seems like a very safe bet. CEDIA sessions As ever, many of these pressing themes will be reflected in the CEDIA education programme, which continues to be a stalwart of the ISE schedule. In 2015, the agenda will include a grand total of 24 workshops, featuring four one-day training courses and 20 90-minute sessions. iquity of tablets has brought ends beyond, for example, basic st homeowners. house automation can be ready in a matter of minutes without the need to open a laptop. The shift from SD to HD TV prompted a massive cycle of set renewal by homeowners that had obvious and substantial benefits for manufacturers. Subsequent to that, the promise of a further sizeable payday heralded by the prospect of 3D TV failed to come to pass. Now we are faced with the spectre of Ultra HD/4K, and although the jury is very much out with regard to the expected pace or spread of adoption, there is a general consensus that 4K will ultimately have a far greater impact than 3D on residential TV consumption.

There is only space here for a few highlights, but the following look to be must-attends for residential installers seeking to maintain their cutting edge credentials. On Monday 9 February, Presto AV’s Geoff Meads will tackle the challenges of wireless networking with a one-day course devised to suit anyone who needs to understand the design and implementation of wireless networks. On the following day, Tuesday 10 February, CEDIA US’ David Pedigo will present a farreaching session that will highlight a wide variety of future technologies and perceptions that will affect the residential integration sector in the coming years. Underlining the already-discussed rise of 4K, Hamish Neale from Leaf UK & Europe will present an ‘All You Need to Know’ guide to Ultra

HD/4K on 10 February, touching on the differences between 4K and HD technology as compared to its 1080P predecessors, and what it takes to successfully distribute such signals. And circling back around to the opening theme of this article – lighting control – Guy Singleton from Imagine This will present a comprehensive introduction to the basics of lighting control in a session entitled ‘Let There Be Light’, again taking place on 10 February. In addition to delivering an extensive education programme CEDIA will also be emphasising the importance of effective wiring in delivering many of the aforementioned technologies. Notes CEDIA education director Simon Buddle: “We are continuing to encourage all stakeholders within the industry to download and use CEDIA’s Recommended Wiring Guidelines as the go-to Best Practice document for any and all smart technology requirements in the home.” The recessionary cycle of 2008-10 certainly affected the residential sector quite profoundly, prompting the postponement or cancellation of many high-profile construction programmes. But as 2014 draws to a close we can contemplate a market now operating at full strength once again, with multiple exciting new technologies set to ensure that demand remains healthy at all tiers of the market – from the highest of high-end luxury flats to retrofits and more budget-conscious entry-level projects.

Da-Lite’s 4k ready surfaces preserve resolution and colour fidelity Da-Lite’s chemical formula for the HD Progressive line of 4K ready projection surfaces is designed to perfectly reflect and preserve the image being projected. When you look closely at a projection screen surface, many surfaces look like varying grains of sandpaper and others have microscopic variations on the surface. This causes pixel loss and “noise” in the image because the surface isn’t able to perfectly reflect the projected image. As projection resolution advances, pixel preservation becomes much more important to preserve the clarity of an image. The chemistry behind Da-Lite HD Progressive surfaces is formulated to create a surface free of microscopic variances allowing the screen to essentially disappear. The result is brilliant light, vibrant color and the best surface for HD, 4K and Ultra HD projection. Stand 2-C42 RISE 2015 | 49

Parallax - a projection screen that looks like a television Flat panels have their place, but in a room greater than 15 feet deep, a larger display is needed. Parallax is a projection screen that mimics the look of a television when it is on and when it is off with two improvements – larger size availability and no glare. Parallax is the latest surface from Da-Lite, and it features an advanced optical lens system that rejects light, which means it maintains higher contrast and color saturation in brightly lit environments. The new surface technology is made up of multiple layers to achieve its light blocking properties and superior viewing angles. Special film layers block and absorb ambient light and improve contrast while a diffuser layer maximises viewing angles up to 85˚. A black layer helps with contrast and colour reproduction, and a protective low gloss top coating provides protection and reduces glare. Stand 2-C42 RISE 2015 | 53

CEDIA MEMBERSHIP Thinking of joining CEDIA? Current members explain the value of membership and what it means for them “I am a true believer in the value of being a CEDIA member, particularly in this region. Since we joined in 2006, we’ve been able to use the CEDIA logo on all communication, allowing us to build trust and project our professionalism to clients. We continually strive for excellence in our design and implementation, and these same professional commitments extend to everyone we supervise or employ.” Leon Beuyukian, Novus Automation, Dubai

Angus Gibson, Symm & Company Ltd, UK

“I joined CEDIA soon after it launched in the UK in 1996. The association has since matured and become a significant influence in the industry, providing guidance to architects, interior designers, developers and manufacturers who appreciate CEDIA’s professional approach and get comfort when working with CEDIA members. Being a member also brings a sense of belonging and pride to our employees. The CEDIA courses available each year allow staff the opportunity to develop their careers.”

“Being a CEDIA member signifies and legitimises our expertise and opens up opportunities to share and gain new technical knowledge with our peers through the CEDIA network. Our membership reassures our customers and allows us to assert our professionalism when we’re presented with a new project request. CEDIA membership is a symbol of top quality!”

“Before joining CEDIA, I was a little lost in the custom installation business and did not have faith that the industry would give me what I was looking for. I joined CEDIA and after attending a course in 2011 with Rich Green and finally realised that there were people doing business the way I wanted to do business, and he gave me guidance and ideas about how to move forward. Since then I’ve grown my company from two to ten employees, and adopted a stronger focus and vision for the future. The knowledge I’ve attained through the CEDIA network is priceless, and I totally believe in the CEDIA philosophy.”

Antonia Davin, MultiZone, France

Nick Caripis, BNC Technology, South Africa

“Pixel Projects continues to be a CEDIA member because it gives potential clients confidence in our ability to deliver consistent quality. Using the CEDIA mark of approval on our website and communications quickly highlights to clients that we are dedicated to providing a high standard of installation that meets current industry standards.” “I attended the CEDIA Expo 2014 in Denver where I was astonished at the number of professionals attending the event and the outstanding products on show. This prompted me to become a member which has given my company a boost through the various contacts I’ve made through CEDIA. Franzucon Ltd is now poised to conquer Nigeria, West Africa and even the world at large as a result of the networking, distributorship and partnership deals obtained at the CEDIA Expo 2014 alone. Kudos to CEDIA for their ability to identify, guide and associate with credible professionals.”

Tad Moy, Pixel Projects Ltd

Engr. Cyprian Ezeomedo, Franzucon Ltd, Nigeria

Stuart Burgess, Just Add Popcorn, UK

74 | RISE 2015

“We are now in our second year of membership and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. Membership means you gain access to some great training which can be sector-specific or business basics; the quality of the white papers and other information available are excellent; CEDIA representatives are always flexible and supportive; and there are many networking opportunities which mean you can step outside of the day-to-day tasks and consider your business from a strategic perspective.”
