September 2015

Dear GREEN people!

- A warm welcome back from your vacations!

I

hope that you have all enjoyed time off with your family and friends, whether it has been on the beach, in the mountain cabin, on your bike, “city¬hopping” or repairing your house. As some of you may have seen on our Facebook group, I was in France, where I had the opportunity to see the Tour de France. Also on Facebook were some pictures from Johannes and my trip to Russia in early July, where we joined Dmitry in visiting 5 existing and potential customers. I think there is work to do for Bactoforce there. So, expansion of our geographical footprint is on the agenda, but I also see that our organization is growing and changing in the existing areas. Some have left us over the summer, and new people are stepping into their positions. Welcome to you – I hope that you will find Bactoforce a good place to work. I am looking forward to meeting you. While adding new people to the team (and at the same time saying goodbye some of the “old”) means that we have to focus on training. In Silkeborg, we are in the process of developing more detailed work instructions, which will be tested and distributed soon. The aim is to have a tool, which can be used as a reference in the field, not just another handbook to be put on the bookshelf.

But even more important is the training and “calibration” that you can do when you are together with your colleagues on an inspection. Please be open to share your experience and ask questions! Finally, I would like to share a bit of sunshine. I have over the summer had conversations with people from large organization in the food sector. What I find is that Bactoforce is recognized as strong brand and a company with a unique competence and experience. This makes me very proud. And you should be too, because it is you and your work they are talking about! by Nils Jacob Haaning

Bactoforce organization - Whats new?

In Denmark

I have found during my time in

Bactoforce, that we are often successful in recruiting good people into our organization. But from time to time, it also happens that other companies notice the high quality in our team – and manage to convince some of our people to leave us. It is always a loss when it happens, but I am also proud that Bactoforce is a place from where people can rise up to other challenges in their careers.

Johnny has now unfortunately decided to follow the footsteps of Glenn and will join Ecolab as their District Manager, where he will lead a team of CIP specialists working in the food sector in Denmark. In the 18 months of working with us, Johnny did not only fill, but also expand the shoes. It is therefore with much regret but also a lot of good wishes for his future that we say “see you around”.

This has also been the case in Den- Bjarne Jensen mark over the summer, where we Bjarne has also chosen to leave Bactoforce. He joined the team have lost two and recruited one. about a year ago from a position in Arla Foods in southern DenJohnny Pilgaard mark. He quickly learned It is a bit less than two the job and was recyears since Glenn left ognized as a person Bactoforce, and we always in a good needed to find a person mood and thereto fill his shoes. Especially at the Christmas dinner last year, where he was the first to hit the dancefloor (not because he was drunk and fell!) But during the year with Bactoforce, his previous colleagues must have realized what a good guy they had lost, so they gave him an offer that he could not refuse. So he is now back to the same Arla foods dairy where he came from. Allan Lauritsen We are now looking to strengthen the team further in the coming months and have for the time being welcomed 29 year old Allan Lauritsen to our team. Allan is a trained dairyman since 2009 and we are looking forward to introduce him to the Bactoforce universe. by Nils Jacob Haaning

Two months ago we had to make

inspector Egbert redundant due to personal aspects. Unfortunately this was short after he had started to work for us. At September 1st our new inspector Ted de Lang, has started to replace Egbert. During one of

his first inspection he had the opportunity to assist at a large tank inspection with the spider. The inspection was supervised by Volker Behr and assisted by our free lancer Jan Hunneman. Ted very much appreciated the guidance support he got from Volker.

Ted is rope access level 1 certified and has experiences in our work obtained at his military service. I would like to thank Egbert for his contribution and like to welcome Ted into our team.

The Founding of Bactoforce - “the dairy industry has brought me far and wide”

By Eigil Appel Pedersen, - Founder and Chairman of Bactoforce

Little boy dreams

When I was a teenager I wanted

to become an accountant. I grew up in Roedekro, Denmark where I worked at the local dairy after school. In high school I talked to the dairy manager about my future plans to become an accountant. When his laughter subsided, he said, “Come to me in the office when you are done your work today”. Out in the dairy, I worked together with the experienced workers, most of whom were unskilled manual workers. Great was therefore my amazement, when I came into the boss’s office and saw shelves with lots of microbiology dairy books, organic chemistry,

mechanical engineering, economics, management, accounting and I also found out that there was a dairy school - fantastic . My boss back in the day, believed I had to much gumption to be an accountant, and asked me if I wouldn´t like to be an apprentice at the dairy instead. So that I did. The apprentice The apprenticeship began August 1, 1977 in the cheeses department in Roedekro Dairy. Afterwards I learned butter production, production of yellow cheese and machine management. With only three months left of internship time, our butter maker left his job and I was left with the responsibility of the whole butter production. That really put hair on my chest. International startup and problem solver After school in 1983 employed by Pasilac’s butter department. They sell butter equipment in Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand, so the job brought me far and wide. In my last job at Pasilac in

1985-86, I was involved in the start-up of the time the world’s largest cheese dairy, Corona dairy in California. After jobs at a few Danish cheese dairies the yearning for abroad became too big, and I was in 1987 employed by Recombined Dairy System in Aarhus, where I worked to develop the production of cheese by direct recombination. The system was primarily sold in the Middle East, as in the years took most of my life in sales and start-up of plants in this area. Bactoforce founded For family reasons, it was necessary for me to be more in Denmark. My years abroad had given me great experience in problem solving around the start of production. I got the idea to start Bactoforce. The market was ripe with the very large dairy plants that wished to minimize the financial risk of down-time and production errors of expensive brands. The dairies introduced all sorts of quality systems, and therefore received a visit from auditors requested documentation. Bacto-

Running GREEN men

- at the annual DHL Relay in Aarhus Memorial Park

August 2014 was the year a new tradition at

Bactoforce started. The tradition is to participate in the annual DHL Running event in Aarhus Memorial Park, which more than 45.000 participants from companies all over Denmark visited this year in a 3 day period.

This year’s Bactoforce runners were Nils Jacob, Johnny, Martin, Allan (New employee) and Lars. The goal of the event was a relay of 5x5 km,

through the beautiful surroundings in Aarhus. Even though Nils Jacob had problem fibre damage in his thigh, and some people were in better shapes than others were, we all made it to the finishing line. The evening ended with a beer, delicious lunchboxes and fireworks. What is the standard? S

ince 2013, I from Bactoforce A/S, have been advising Arla Foods on topics related to hygienic design of processing equipment. This has led to some interesting projects, latest in Russia, where Arla is setting up a line in cooperation with the Russian dairy Molvest. Supporting Arla Based on our knowledge and experience, we were asked last year to support an internal Arla project aiming to update existing and make new standards covering hygiene and machine quality. Arla has had a lot of different standards created over time, but they were never maintained and were missing clear reference to international standards (like ISO) or guide (like EHEDG, European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group). To top this off, some parts was more like a textbook, rather than giving a clear guidance to the reader. If the guide is being used for validating equipment, it must hold a clear goal, otherwise it will lose its strength.

So far, a guide covering Hygienic Design/Construction Specification and Welding Requirements has been released.: Futhermore, guides for Pasteurisers, Tanks, Pipes and fittings are in the pipeline – I hope to have them out by the end of this year. New welding standards By October 2015, there is coming a new standard ISO 9606-1 Qualification testing of welders – fusion welding – Part 1: Steel, which must be implemented in EU. To help our inspectors, when they do quality control on installation (endoscopy), you need to check the Welder’s qualification test certificate. I am working on a small guide, introducing the information to check. Hope to have it released by end October. The guide will be for both internal use, but can also be shared with our customers. Can we help each other? For the time being, the Arla guides/ standards cannot be handed out to customers. By we are working

on that, so that we can use it to help our other customers – and to use it as a tool to brand Bactoforce as the Food Safety Company. I will let you know, when I have something ready for you. In the meantime, you are welcome to get a copy of the standard for your own use, if you are interested in updating your own knowledge. I could also use your help: I am working on expanding my customer base for providing consultancy on hygienic design of processing equipment – from the purchasing stage to delivery of the equipment. With your access to customers all over Europe, I would welcome your input in case you meet customers, where you see a potential for this type of service.

All in all it was a very interesting week with much food for thought. I will say that it left us with the impression that there are opportunities, which we will try to catch. Since the trip, we have been following up on the contacts and in addition have been planning for more visits. It is our target that we over time will be able to build a good foundation on which we can set up local company. Step-by-step, as Johannes says.

From loss to leads - we won the competition

o

ur Client Döhler in Poland is an important apple juice concentrate producer and has for a long time been our good client with a reasonable turnover. Nearly 1 year ago, we lost this important client due to competition on the Polish market - the competition is not our feared competition for HE Inspection – but it is a local company doing reconditioning of PHE and in addition doing leakage test by pressure test - this method seems to be accepted by our client! Further we lost the business for TankSafe as well – here a Polish company using rope access offered their services and we lost the business, mainly because of the size of theses 14 big storage tanks for fresh apple juice with a diameter of about 8 - 10 m and a volume of about 1.000.000 kg -

actual we do not have a solution to climb into these big silotanks – but due to investment of our Dutch colleagues, we were able to offer Döhler tank inspections with rope access. So once again Bactoforce is now a competent and certified partner for tank inspection for hygiene inspection and surface inspection (crack test) to Döhler. Back to PastSafe - competing to Polish local companies we find it hard to compete on price - but we are very optimistic to win our client back - not on price, but due to Bactoforce competences with PastSafe Solution, including; - CIP Control by our new CIP Validation method - Leakage test including localisation of any cross contamination - CIP cleaning of the energy side (hot water, cold water and ice water) with our pump set to improve

F

or more than 18 months, Bactoforce Germany has been able to make experience with new CIP-Validation Method. This method is a sensitive method to find residues of organic (TOC) in the process line – in practise it distinguisched as an ideal method of vulnerability analysis of microbial risk.

There was only 1 setback – we lost our inspector Stephan Ziemer who was familiar with CIP Validation method so now Daniel Wojcicki has been trained and fullfills competence leak successfully – our goal is to train more inspectors so that we offer the new Bactoforce service method in an area cross boarders the next generation of TOC inspection unit with improvement.

Safety certification The Bactoforce GmbH is now in addition to the ISO 9001:2008 (management system) also officially certified SCC. This certification combined interests of (work) safety, health and environmental. The SCC certificate is - nationally as well as internationally - an indispensable condition to be taken into account in the selection of contractors. In addition, certified contractors benefit from legal certainty, optimized management processes and efficient workflows. This helps to reduce risks by business disruptions, environmental and property damage and downtime costs.

New concept

- for hygiene inspections on open surfaces

Dear colleagues - welcome back!

Hope you all have enjoyed your holidays and are ready for new challenges in Bactoforce! A summer passes quickly, especially here in the North, where the period we call “summer”, which usually extends from the last 2 weeks in June to the first 2 weeks in August. This year seems many of us that it has been special short since the good summer weather passed during our lunch break. Period in June, July and August is a relatively “quiet” period for Bac-

toforce Nordic. Customers takes holidays for their employees and there are substitutes in production making it difficult to carry out as many inspections could imagine. Through the Danish Embassy in Helsinki and Riga, we have initiated a project to expand and develop Bactoforce against the Baltic states and the Finnish market. It turns out that the embassy is a good “door-opener” for us and we have expectations of a development in 2016/2017. We have also been making two trips to India for inspections which was very successful. The same customer has

now requested us to make similar inspections in South Africa. Bactoforce Nordic has taken the initiative to develop a new concept for hygiene inspections on open surfaces. We are now in dialogue with the world’s largest producer of North Atlantic salmon, Marine Harvest, for doing some studies and tests of the concept. If this cooperation proves successful, it could be a good starting point for Bactoforce to expand its market from primarily liquid process to include production processes such as meat and fish.
