The European Coal and Steal Community can be seen as the foundationstone for the European Union, this is the reason why every year the Europe Day of the European Union takes place on May 9th. The Delegation of the European Union in Colombia is going to celebrate this day in Barranquilla this year and they will offer cultural and scientific events.

Within the frame of the European Day the Institute for European Studies of the Universidad del Norte organizes an experimental game, which will simulate a proper legislative process of the European Union. Students of the courses of study like International Relations, Political Sciences, Medicine and Law will act like delegates of parties of the European Parliament, member states as well as interest groups and discus about a new guideline for chocolate. The model will be opened on May 9th 2013 at 2pm in the room “Salón de Proyecciones” of the Universidad del Norte by the ambassador of the EU, Maria von Gool, the Consul of Germany in Cartagena, Frank Bolle as well as the vice-rector of the Universidad del Norte, PhD. Alberto Roa amongst others. The experimental game, which is financed by the German embassy in Bogota, is the first of its kind at the Colombian Caribbean Coast and shall make the complex decision-making processes within the EU, which is as well hard to understand more clear to the Colombian students. The DAAD in collaboration with the Colombian Ministry of Scientific Research, COLCIENCIAS, the DFG (German Community of Scientific Research) and the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation organizes a great seminar of scientific research in Bogota on May 10th from 1.30pm till 7.00pm. The German President Dr. h.c. Joachim Gauck will participate in this event as well. Within the frame of this seminar different possibilities of support for scientific research projects und stays in Germany will be demonstrated. The Dirección de Cooperación y Desarrollo Internacional and the Dirección de Investigación, Desarrollo e Investigación of the Universidad del Norte will broadcast this event live. Everyone who is interested is very welcomed to join. The broadcast will take place in the room “Aula Digital” (Blog G, 5th floor). Within the frame of the research stay of Kai Patricia Engelhardt, like restorer of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, at the Universidad del Norte, the workshop “Preservation of culture through preventive conservation”, which is co-organized by the Institute for European Studies, will take place from May 6th till May 19th. The aim of this workshop is to examine new forms of preservation and to test their applicability for museum at the Colombian Caribbean Coast. Cities in competition, the crisis of the Euro and the relations between the EU and Latin America are just a few examples of the topics which have been discussed during the Cátedra Europa. Experts from Europe and Latin America discussed about the future of the EU as well as sustainable and competitive urban development. Furthermore the Institute for European Studies presented together with the German School of Barranquilla, the German Embassy of Bogota and the Library Karl Parrish of the Universidad del Norte the exposition “Hallazgos arqueológicos en Alemania” during the Cátedra Europa. In Cooperation with the Oficina de Cooperacion Internacional and the Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken (Deutschland) the IEE offers an additional diploma in European Studies, the so called „Europaicum“. Within this year-long course the students spend one semester en Germany to reinforce their knowledge about Europe. Carlos J. Velásquez Muñoz (2013), La protección del medio ambiente urbano en la Unión Europea. Editorial Universidad del Norte, Barranquilla The book of Carlos Velásquez, which tackles environmental protection and sustainability, was recently published. The author is the principal of the Department of Jurisprudence and Political Science of the Universidad del Norte.
