Shangri Lao

Shangri Lao offers a luxury tent camp alongside Elephant Village to deliver an amazing experience. Located 12 km from Luang Prabang Town on the Khan River, Shangri Lao features themed tents based on French Dr Neis’ 1882-83 expedition in the area. You can stay in “Inspiration”, “Water Healing”, “Rejuvenation” and similarly named tents. “This is a work in progress,” explained owner Markus Peschke, who said the number of tents will reach seven in 2013. Handcrafted 19th century-style furniture dons each of the spacious bamboo-and-canvas tents with hardwood floors. An attached bathroom offers either an era tub or whirlpool. Guests can also choose to stay in the eight-room lodge.

The facilities add a modern touch. Suspension bridges weave through the property to the reception area serving Twinnings Tea and gourmet coffee, and on to an infinity pool and bar. For dining, the camp restaurant’s menu presents a la carte Lao and Western dishes. Add in elephant tours following Dr P. Neis exploits for the perfect stay.

The meeting room can accommodate up to 36 delegates, and offers a choice of set menus for coffee breaks and meals. But, LLP’s spacious 60-seat Balcony Bar & Restaurant headlines the show, starring Michelin star-rated Chef Pit Wanderscheid presenting “The Mekong Spirit” evolving menu, highlighting basic French cuisine using Luang Prabang products. The outlet, decked out in local wood furnishings and encircled by a wide terrace, offers free transport to and from town.

LLP. a Luxembourg initiative, presents a model for public-private sector partnerships that pays off as proven in Lanith’s “Passport to Success” skills training programme, which generates revenue to sustain the project.
