Inside Magazine - Issue 21

Page 1

goodbye Yes it does normally say welcome… but this is a goodbye from us as this is the final issue of Inside Magazine. It’s been a lot of fun producing the magazine over the last three and a half years. From the start we have remained a two person team, and running Inside Magazine has taken us on a brilliant and unexpected journey; the biggest and best outcome has been establishing our second publication, Inside Artists, a national magazine devoted to showcasing emerging artists to galleries and art lovers across the country. We’re so excited to see where Inside Artists will take us, and as such we have decided to focus completely on making it the best it can be. We want to thank everyone who has helped us in creating 21 issues of Inside Magazine; our mentor Lyndsay and everyone at The Prince’s Trust that helped us get started, our brilliant proof reader Daisy, Kate Tilston for many great articles and Ross Skilton who’s supported us from the start and written so many insightful articles for our health section. A big thanks to all the businesses we’ve worked with and a big thanks to YOU the reader for picking up our magazine. Also another BIG thanks to our pals hello DODO for designing the final ever issue cover, you can find out more about them in this issue! If you’re an art lover and want to support what we’re doing head to insideartists. co.uk, sign up to the mailing list or better yet order a copy in print. Laterz Kieran & Toby

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

September 27 | Marina Square, Brighton Marina

O

nce again Rockinghorse Children’s Charity has teamed up with Brighton Marina for the annual Dragon Boat Festival in Marina Square, to raise money for sick children in Sussex. The Dragon Boat Race will be making its roaring return to Brighton on Sunday 27th September. The Brighton-based charity is looking for up to 24 teams of 12-16 people (over 14’s only) to sign-up to the challenge and battle it out on the Marina waters to become the 2015 Dragon Boat champions. Registration is £100 per boat and competitors are being asked to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship per person. Last year saw the RNLI Brighton Lifeboat team crowned winners of the event which raised £25,000 for Rockinghorse. As the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton, the money raised is being used to provide counselling sessions throughout 2015 for parents who have children on the High Dependency Unit at the

Alex. Rockinghorse has been supporting children for nearly 50 years, and does not receive any government funding for their work, instead they rely on the generous support of individuals, community groups, companies and trusts; so fundraising events like the Dragon Boat Festival make a real difference to their work. A great day out for all the family, entry to the Dragon Boat Festival is free for spectators with all ages welcome. Races start from 10am and the event will host food and drink stalls with children’s activities and entertainment on offer throughout the day. For teams wanting to take part in the 2015 Dragon Boat Race, please contact Analiese at Rockinghorse on 01273 330044 or email analiese@rockinghorse. org.uk. To find out more, visit the events page on the charity’s website rockinghorse.org.uk/events

T

his September Preston Park is host to Together the People, a 5,000 capacity, non-camping music and arts festival founded by local music promotions company One Inch Badge.

The brand new festival will bring the likes of Super Furry Animals, The Levellers, Billy Bragg and Martha Reeves to the city alongside new and emerging talent for two days of eclectic music, food, film, and art. a go at something new with workshops taking place across the weekend, including tasters in spray painting, screen printing, pottery and circus skills amongst others. There will be plenty of other areas to explore and exciting experiences to be had at Together The People’s debut outing, with art installations and exhibitions curated by Studio 45 and Cassette Lord, a music pop-up shop hosted by Resident music, a programme of moving pictures from Duke of Yorks Picturehouse and everyone will enjoy the delicious variety of local independent food and drink on offer presented by Street Diner. This insightful story of family relationships is emotionally charged but brilliantly comic. GRAND CENTRAL Take a visit to Brighton’s Grand Central

F

ollowing an extensive refurbishment the Grand Central in Brighton re-opened its doors to the public in June, offering a welcome stop for those arriving into the city with its convenient location opposite Brighton central train station. The pub is operated by London brewers Fullers, and as such the bar is well stocked with their award-winning real cask ales, craft beers and Old and New World wines. From the iconic London Pride to smaller batch craft lagers, there’s a tipple for everyone to enjoy. As well as a vibrant, buzzing bar, the pub has prided itself on creating a brand new menu serving top quality delicious food, with dishes inspired by the best of British culinary traditions, using locally sourced produce. The kitchen is open for breakfast, with full English, American style and Continental options. Lunchtime is covered with a wide range of fresh sandwiches, while the dinner menu features a mix of traditional and contemporary favourites such as cod & chips, Spatchcock chicken and South Coast onglet, as well as vegetarian options. The Grand Central is also

one of the city’s prime locations for a traditional Sunday roast. Towards the back of the building, two sets of stairs reveal some of the pub’s best hidden secrets. The first lead to the Nightingale Room which is host to a gin bar and theatre, a venue in its own right with topcalibre plays, music and comedy events scheduled right through the year. The second steps will take you to the stunning sunsoaked roof garden which boasts ample seating – a true rarity in bustling Brighton and the perfect place to enjoy dinner or drinks in the open air this summer. Whether you’re catching a train, just arriving in town, looking for a bite to eat or just in need of refreshment, the Grand Central is definitely worth a visit. grandcentralbrighton.co.uk

Fairy Tale Fair © Jenny Rutterford Photography

H

ello DODO are the design duo injecting joy into people’s lives one smile at a time, with little reminders to relax and not take life too seriously. Husband and wife duo Jam and Ali Lewry-Beale are the dynamic pair behind the brand, creating bright and playful designs for the young and young-at-heart, which they hand screen print into slick artworks that add pops of playful happiness to any room. Together they plot their next artwork, bouncing ideas off each other to come up with the finished designs. Animals, bright colours and clever puns are always big influences for the couple, who’s ethos of ‘the sillier the better’ is clearly seen throughout their range. This year has seen some big changes for hello DODO; with Ali leaving her day job to focus entirely on the business and a big move from Brighton to Worthing. ‘In Brighton we were living and working in a tiny flat that could barely fit all our silkscreens in’, explains Ali. ‘Now we have a dedicated work room, so that’s been hugely positive’.

This increase to space and time has allowed hello DODO to take part in lots of exciting projects and exhibitions this year, with lots more planned for the upcoming months. In May their work was shown at the graphic arts festival Pick Me Up at Somerset House, as part of the Best Collective. ‘Exhibiting at Pick Me Up this year is our proudest achievement so far as it has always been our big dream! We were actually inspired by visiting Pick Me Up five years ago to teach ourselves to screen print and launch hello DODO, so it has a really special place in our hearts’. They have also been able to expand their range with brand new designs and products, such as their ‘Pigeon and Tonic’ screen print which has become an instant classic, and a range of colourful greeting cards for every occasion. Jacqui’s Story Concept Facelift™, Neck Rejuvenation, & Upper Eyelid Surgery

Aged 70 from West Sussex

My beautician recommended a couple of cosmetic surgeons to me and that’s how I came across Amir. I attended an open evening to find out more, and what encouraged me further was that I could have the procedures I was looking at under a local anaesthetic rather than needing a general. I came to the evening with my husband and we were both impressed with what Amir had to say, the photos he showed us, and most importantly the way he answered everyone’s questions with honesty and clarity. We didn’t feel it was just a slick presentation so I decided to go ahead with a face lift, neck lift, and an upper eye lift.

I was able to chat to the team and they chatted to me. I felt relaxed and in good hands. On the day of my procedure Amir took me through the pre-operative preparation carefully and unhurriedly. The operating theatre team were welcoming and friendly. The whole procedure took 3 hours, during which I was able to chat to the team and they chatted to me. I felt relaxed and in good hands. I had a check-up with Amir a week later, and I am thrilled with the outcome. I look younger but without the “Oh gosh, what have you had done?”. Amir continued to monitor me with checkups after surgery. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he’s said several times “If you are worried about anything just contact me any time, including weekends”, and he absolutely means it. He’s the only surgeon I have used who has that approach.

Here are some other procedures and treatments available!

Designosaur

D

esignosaur have been creating jewellery to adorn Brighton’s most fashionable since early 2012, and have since expanded to be sold both nationally and internationally. The brand has captured the world’s attention with their sleek designs, which are laser cut in acrylic and wood before being hand-assembled and transformed into wearable pieces of art in the form of necklaces, brooches and rings. The brand, formed of Karli Dendy and Jacques Keogh who met while studying Product Design at the University of Sussex, earned their namesake by starting out exclusively with dinosaur creations, and although the pre-historic still rank highly in their catalogue of designs they have since branched out to include a variety of capsule collections within their range, taking inspiration from pop culture, Jacque’s recent trip to Australia and Karli’s fascination with late 80s and 90s styles and colours. Being based in Brighton has connected designosaur to a network of like-minded designer makers, and aside from the beach and the sunshine it is the artistic spirit

of the city that has kept the pair here five years after graduating. ‘Living in Brighton has meant that we are surrounded by creatives’, says Karli, ‘We only need to step outside our front door to find inspiration’. So what’s next for designosaur? Aside from ‘world domination’ you can expect a new collection featuring bright primary colours, based on ideas of Bauhaus colour theory, some new collaborations with other designers and they’re also currently working on a film which takes a closer look at their roarsome designs. Recently they have also created some innovative laser cut homewares, including wall hangings and box lights. You can find designosaur jewellery in boutiques across the country, such as Porta in Brighton’s North Laines, or you can find the full range at: designosaurYEAH.co.uk

ANNA CATES

A

nna Cate’s work celebrates the beauty of wood. Each one of her striking pieces has been crafted with great attention to detail and given a flawless finish that begs to be touched. She works on both large and small scale and keeps exploring new ideas to develop as an artist. Lamps, bowls, chunky candle holders or tiny pairs of earrings, all are made to last and to be loved.

A Degree in 3-D Crafts from Brighton University gave Anna a fantastic kick-start to a professional career as a designer/maker and further strengthened her affinity with wood as a material.

Originally from Sweden, Anna has made Worthing her home. She thrives in the artistic community around the south coast where her work can be found at prestigious Craft Fairs and galleries as well as the Brighton and Worthing Art Trails. She has recently joined the Shoreham Art Gallery where you can find her latest work.

For Anna, wood has real weight and substance yet it can also be turned into something very delicate and refined. Each piece has its own unique characteristics and discovering and enhancing these hidden qualities gives her great pleasure, which shines out in her work.

Her turning skills are also sought after by several local furniture makers whom she regularly supplies with turned chair legs and various other turned objects.

HEALTH

South Downs Osteopathy

S

outh Downs Osteopathy is a caring, friendly osteopathic practice run by registered Osteopath, Ross Skilton, with clinics in Brighton & Hove, Henfield and Haywards Heath. Ross founded South Downs Osteopathy in 2011 following the completion of a 5-year Masters Degree in Osteopathy at the British School of Osteopathy, which saw him attend specialist clinics in sports injury, pregnancy care, paediatrics, elderly care and pain management in patients with HIV, in addition to working with the NHS in GP and hospital settings. How long have you lived and worked in the area? I was born and raised in Brighton and have lived in the area all my life, aside from a few years in Southampton (reading for a Bachelors' degree) and London (completing my Masters' degree in Osteopathy). After qualifying as an osteopath I decided to set up my own practice in my home town and the surrounding area. Aside from working locally in Brighton & Hove, I have a very busy clinic in Henfield. I have strong family roots there, so it was the obvious place for me to extend my practice. I also provide my services to a clinic in Haywards Heath, which is run by a long-term friend of mine. By working in a number of locations, I am able to offer my services to a wider and more varied section of the population. What first drew you to osteopathy? Actually, I originally wanted to be a doctor and had intended to move on to study a medical degree on completion of my first degree in Physiology with Pharmacology, but when the time came to it, life pulled me in another direction and I stumbled into a career in the pharmaceutical industry for several years (monitoring adverse reactions to medications) before rekindling my desire to work directly with people to help improve their health. I discovered osteopathy ten years ago at Glastonbury festival - a bad night's sleep in a leaky tent left me with excruciating back ache, so

I decided to visit an osteopath who was working there and I immediately experienced relief from the pain and a greater freedom of movement. I was so impressed that I was keen to learn more and soon decided that this hands-on, non-pharmaceutical form of healthcare was a far safer, more effective and more holistic way of managing a variety of musculoskeletal (i.e. related to the muscles, joints and bones) pain conditions. HEALTH problems, sciatica, hip and knee pain, foot and ankle problems, postural problems, pain related to arthritis, muscle spasms, sciatica, minor sports injuries and much more (for a full list, please visit my website). However, our philosophy is very different to that of pharmaceutical medicine, and because our approach is holistic (we consider your lifestyle, goals and general health of your whole body; not just the area in which you feel pain) we don't treat conditions - we treat PEOPLE who happen to have those conditions, which means that every course of treatment is tailored entirely to the individual person.

in movement in their musculoskeletal system, or anyone wanting to improve their posture or flexibility, should consider visiting an osteopath - they might be surprised at the difference it could make, even when other forms of treatment have not been effective! South Downs Osteopathy is open in Brighton and Hove Monday and Tuesday, 10am to 7pm, the Haywards Heath clinic is open Wednesday 1pm to 8pm and their Henfield clinic is open Thursday and Friday, 9am to 6pm.
