artist profiles

This issue for our ongoing Artist Profiles series we take a look at a selection of artists exhibiting at Brighton Art Fair this September. A whole host of artistic talent from across the country will be heading to the city for this year’s event including painters, sculptors, printmakers, textile artists and photographers, working with a varied range of subject and matter and mediums.

ARTS & CULTURE

JAY SEABROOK

P

rintmaker Jay Seabrook creates atmospheric artworks using a variety of methods and techniques including collagraphy, carborundum printing, silk screening and drypoint.

Depicting rolling green countryside, swirling cerulean seas and open blue, bird-filled skies, Seabrook has developed a technique which combines detailed watercolour sections within her collagraph prints. The process of creating these works can be labour intensive and unpredictable, however the beautifully unique and intricate outcome speaks for itself. The English landscape has been a constant source of inspiration for Seabrook; the rural countryside of Leicestershire and the view from her Rutland based studio window acting as muse for her artworks. Despite hailing from a landlocked county, regular trips to Norfolk and the South Coast have led to seascapes, waves, beach huts and seagulls featuring regularly in her works. This year will be Jay’s first time exhibiting at Brighton Art Fair. “I am really looking forward to visiting Brighton and taking part in what promises to be a spectacular event”. You will find her at stand 12 at Brighton Art Fair, or visit jayseabrook.co.uk

ARTS & CULTURE

‘Flights of Fancy’ by Karen Jones

U

" l am surrendering, submitting myself to the oppressive boundaries of creating hundreds and hundreds of leaves, feathers and petals"

sing fine line work, paper and wire in a restrained and delicate process, Karen Jones has created a series of pastoral artworks where trees, birds, flora, fauna and the very air in between seem in perfect harmony. These new artworks, which will be on display at the upcoming Brighton Art Fair in September, rely on an extremely limited colour palette, as line becomes colour to depict fragile natural worlds; a mix of Utopia and Old England, a place where nature seems untouched but for the hint of some divine landscape gardener. Similar to the mental steps made in painting an icon, Jones has found that the intense process of creating leaf

after leaf or feather after feather has taken on a religious element and the idea of ‘Creation’ is a powerful and personal motivation in these artworks. "When l make the decision to create a tree, a bird, a flower l am surrendering, submitting myself to the oppressive boundaries of creating hundreds and hundreds of leaves, feathers and petals – and that is the point. I could not allow anyone else to make the work for me because then the reason for the artworks existence would be gone”. You will find Karen Jones at Brighton Art Fair on stand 56 or visit her website: www.karenjonesillustrator.com

ARTS & CULTURE

RICHARD P. COOK

D

ividing his time between landscapes, interiors, still life and commissioned portraits, Richard P. Cook works in oils, watercolours and occasionally acrylics.

Having been elected to the Royal society of British Artists in 1976, Richard has since regularly exhibited in the RBA exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London. This September, as well as appearing at the Brighton Art Fair he will be exhibiting in the prestigious Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition. While landscape and coastal scenes are some of Richard’s great interests, particularly London views and ambient sun soaked vistas of Italy, France and Spain, he has produced a large catalogue of commissioned work. This has included a varied array of subjects including large family group portraits complete with their houses, horses, vintage yachts, client’s favourite views and dogs and cats. Richard welcomes further commissions, and a selection of his work is available to view on his website at richardpcook.co.uk, or you can visit him at Brighton Art Fair 26th – 28th September.

ARTS & CULTURE

DIANE ROGERS

B

righton based textile artist and designer Diane Rogers creates original one off pieces of contemporary silk textile art and acrylic paintings on canvas.

Inspired by nature and the natural environment alongside buildings, architecture and decay, the contrasts between organic and synthetic materials are a main theme throughout Diane’s work. “I enjoy the discord between the smooth lustrous qualities of silk as a medium and my subject matter” Rogers’ artworks are often created using a combination of techniques including hand painting or print on silk with embroidered and quilted details, giving a compelling, irresistible tactile quality to each piece. This layering of materials produces rich textures, patterns and colours, conveying a juxtaposing sense of both growth and decay. You will find Diane and her artworks this September at Brighton Art Fair, or visit www.dianerogers.co.uk

23

24

ARTS & CULTURE

Pippa Darbyshire

T

his September’s Brighton Art Fair will be painter Pippa Darbyshire’s first exhibition in the city in 10 years, having moved to France in 2001 to open an art gallery, Relais de la Baie, to great success.

With their pure and simple design, Pippa’s paintings depict varied but recurring subjects and motifs, but whether the sea or landscape, a brick wall or still life, her interest and preoccupation is the underlying geometry of a scene; from rhythms and patterns in the horizontal lines of sand and sea, to fences and telegraph poles and even the chimney pots of Brighton. “My work is figurative but I am constantly experimenting and playing with space, which is becoming flatter. I am becoming more interested in texture even though the paint surface is smooth. I often purposely leave obvious errors in my work and the remains of underlying drawings and calculations which give an ‘open’ and rather unfinished appearance.” You will find Pippa and her artworks this September at Brighton Art Fair, or visit pippadarbyshire.com

ARTS & CULTURE

TONY FELD

T

he artworks of Tony Feld often require the viewer to take a second closer look; his work glows with such a realistic quality it is easy to assume you are looking at a photographic print. In fact they are paintings on board and canvas, created in oil and acrylic. Although wildlife and birds in particular are the inspiration and subject of many of his artworks, Feld is keen to point out there are no concepts or hidden meanings behind his works; just pictures. It is this simplicity of subject perhaps, which allows Feld to create such crystal clear images. Feld will have a selection of work to view and purchase at the Brighton Art Fair, 26th – 28th September. tonyfeldpaintings.co.uk - Tel: 07964 194314

OUTSIDE IN

F

ounded in 2006, Outside In is a national project based at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester that provides a platform for those facing barriers to the art world due to mental health issues, disability, health or social circumstance. Outside In won the Charity Award in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category in 2013.

Stacey Fish is inspired by seeing things that she can draw and by looking at books. She tends to use bright colours and when she gets started, she works very quickly.

Additionally, ‘The Inner Self: Drawings from the Subconscious’; a London-based exhibition focusing on drawings and the subconscious, will be at CGP London in Southwark Park from 4 – 21 September. For more information on the upcoming exhibitions or the project itself, visit www.outsidein.org.uk. Anthony Stevens’ trademark stitch-work is inspired by Nicherin Buddhism and Punk Rock and is imbued with meaning; right from the fabric he chooses to the pattern he overlays it with.

Kate Bradbury intuitively creates ink drawings as well as sculptures – or dervishes – from salvaged litter. She is inspired by known and unknown artists, stage sets, archaeology, visions and music.

Jack Haslam’s work is about friendship, loyalty and control, with his love for animals a major influence in his life.

Linda Bell is keen to collaborate whilst creating work and enjoys exploring the relationship between herself, her work and the viewer or collaborator, sharing the playing experience.

David Bradley’s emotional portraits are a depiction of the varied feelings he has experienced, which help him to visualise certain periods of his life.

THE YEAR SO FAR

C

an you believe it, we’re over half way through the year - how did that happen? Does it feel like an age since you were recovering from Christmas? Can you remember the horrendous storms of January & February or is it all a bit of a blur? What about your New Year’s resolutions; did you make any? Did you set yourself goals for this year – can you remember what they are? It’s at this point in the year I often conduct a ‘goal review’ with my coaching clients. What did they start out the year looking to achieve and what have they achieved so far? Sometimes my clients surprise themselves with the amount they have actually achieved, others realise that other priorities have come up and life has taken an unexpected turn and of course there are those who just haven’t had the commitment to see their actions through. So, what have you achieved so far this year that was on your ‘to do’ list at the beginning of the year, and how do you feel about your achievements? If you feel that you are lagging behind or haven’t achieved as much as you would have wished, what are you going to do about it?

When my clients get stuck, we write down the goals/ resolutions they are still looking to achieve and then ask the following: 1. Are these goals still relevant? 2. If yes, are any of them a priority, do they have specific time scales attached to them? 3. What would achieving these goals mean to me? What difference would they make? We then create an action plan looking at how to timetable the actions into the last 5 months of the year. At this point the client commits to updating me on their progress each month so I can keep them on track. Is this something you could do with a friend so that you can monitor each other’s progress? Just imagine how it would feel to get to the end of the year and to have achieved those goals! Good luck and let me know if you need some help. Kate Tilston Life Coach - www.Katetilston.co.uk
